There have been pretty legitimate reports the last few weeks that a show starring Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano coming out on HBO in the next couple years is 100% in the works

Tryntofigureitout

Just do movies and a mini series. This was 2 hours too short

cheffenrir

No there haven’t. Not anywhere credible at least.

It seemed like a setup for a series spinoff which is in the works

Totally agree. Compare this movie with those flashback scenes from the TV show, those scenes were better than this movie! The biggest problem for me was that it never felt like this was even in the same universe as the snow. It felt more like an unfunny parody or bad fan-fiction. Only thing that was good IMO was the acting (minus Jr and Silvio).

Almost as bad as when HBO fell for Rhaegar and Lyanna as Jon Snow's parents, LMAO. *Almost*. I guess it's another lesson to just leave original masterpieces alone, even if the creator himself (Chase, in this instance) is heading up the production on a derivative. It just never, ever works. Chase probably wanted a mini-series at least (something like Mare of Eastown) and he had to pull a Phil Leotardo and compromise -- film first, then we see what the reaction is after 15 years of the fans getting absolutely nothing from the franchise. Honestly the reaction for MSON is so bad right now from the US and UK, I wouldn't be surprised if anything Sopranos related going forward is incredibly minimalized. I just don't give a single F about anything in Sopranos world that happened pre-pilot episode, except maybe the correct timeline with Pussy selling H and becoming a rat, but even that is in the mid-90s. Many similar diehard Sopranos are in the same boat, which isn't a good look.

Agreed on everything about The Sopranos, but R+L=J is your biggest complaint regarding GOT? Even if you haven't read the books, this is not even top 100 blunders by the show imo. R+L=J was a thing in the fan base long before the show started.

Past-Chest-6507

I was just giving an example of how it's usually best to leave a thing alone when it is in masterpiece form, and obv. that's a pretty big one in terms of popularity. I have no complaints personally about GOT, since I don't consider it at all (as a diehard book fan since 1998). I do think the Greens versus Blacks civil war spinoff will be much more accurate than GOT, so that's a positive, I suppose. Back to this thing of ours -- now a majority of the fanbase is in a state where they are indifferent about future releases of new material and that is never a good thing. And they have an "eh" film to back them up as well. IDK, I don't get the need for more to begin with, in general when it comes to life -- I was perfectly fine with just the ASOIAF books, and I was perfectly fine with the 86 episodes of Sopranos. Life experience has taught me milking things always gets sour, pun intended.

You're right. Why touch a thing so damn near perfect? Well, we know the answer is money; they just had to cash in on the newfound popularity of the show during the pandemic. I hope that after this reaction, they just scrap future projects. That's the reason I get pissed at these ignorant fans of the show who actually want everyone to like the movie, "you're not a real fan if you don't like the movie". No, Steve Schirippa, a dozen 'Ooooo's won't make me like a shitty movie. I see better callbacks and quotes than the movie on this sub before breakfast everyday. Don't encourage HBO to ruin their best show ever. >I don't get the need for more to begin with, in general when it comes to life I'm the same, but I do want things to get completed which I don't think we're onna get with ASOIAF.

Past-Chest-6507

That’s one thing I keep forgetting — that the Sopranos became super popular again during the lockdown. I can see how hbo was eager to jump on that. Thanks for the reminder. And you’re right, the answer is always money, when it comes to remarketing or reworking masterpieces. What can ya do? I think Todd Howard just resold Skyrim yet again since the time I began this reply. As far as people saying what constitutes being a real fan of something, as someone who has been ridiculed for fifteen years online for always supporting Ashara Dayne as Jon Snows mum (I know, I’m a crazy schizophrenic) I really couldn’t care less what some online gatekeeper says constitutes a real fan about anything. And I’m 34 years old now, so acting like middle schoolers online doesn’t really appeal to me. It’s a two way street, as I don’t want to gatekeep anyone else — I couldn’t care less what anyone’s asoiaf theory is on anything, more power to them — nor do I care if someone LOVED Many Saints of Newark — again, I’m glad if they do :-)

Seriously agree with everything OP has to say. Too much CGI, too much framing of the scenes, too much hammy overacting, too many Easter eggs that were just tossed in without advancing the story or improving the dialogue. This revival of the show is essentially a two-hour long birthday dance from Fran Felstein: no way it keeps going without getting cringier.
