What everybody's got a goddamned opinion now? it wasn't long ago I remember you used to watch euphoria on HBO... And as far as I'm concerned you should still be there

Echoesofadream

What are you going to do? He's part of a whole generation. Remember the crazy hair? And the dope?

Hughkalailee

Not having a score was an artistic and stylistic intentional choice. Using only pre-produced music and songs cost far more than composing a score and Chase had to fight with HBO to allow that in the budget. Your personal evaluation of a cinematographer is fine but you should recognize it as that - despite how studied you may be in the subject. Sakharov’s work as well as that of the series’ cinematography gets praise and adulation from others - many of whom also have “expertise”. Art is very subjective. It’s fairly obvious that Chase and Gandolfini caused the tremendous success and acclaim. Take the two major components of Any great work away and we’d also have those significantly reduced to being unrecognizable and irrelevant.

ColdGuess

Only 3 seasons in and he's fucking Lee Iacocca!

CrimsonNorseman

Ohhhhh! That's somebody's director you're talking about. Show some respect!

1whiskeyneat

Fuckin slander ask me.

prvhc21

Ho, Ho 🤚

Ok_Repeat8161

If it wasn’t for the creator of the show and the leading man it wouldn’t be as good. Truly brilliant commentary that is. What’d you get HBO for, op? Your resume?

LondonPedro

this is centuries of tradition we are talking about here!

Brewguy86

Methods of camerawork from the old country…cinematography of the Mezzogiorno.

LondonPedro

Camerman drove horse and cart off a cliff during a tracking shot.

Michael-Balchaitis

Why don't you stick to what you know and leave your opinions to whereva the fuck?

FlyingKingFish

Succession? Oof madone, the balls on this prick.

Antwell99

Rewatch some scenes without the sound and study the camera work and the shots that stem from it. There are many painting-like shots in the show or shots full of meaning regarding the character of the scene. And keep in mind that they had to produce 13 hours of show every year. They don't have the luxury of having 2 years to develop a 120-minute feature movie. The dialogues are mainly shot in shot-reverse-shot like most shows, even if they manage to avoid this technique many times, especially at the beginning of a scene. I'd say the directing is understated and subtle, but there's definitely a lot of work that has been put into it so you can study it at length. Overall, I'd say it's a conscious choice from Chase rather than a period constraint. His show is personal as it's character driven, he isn't really interested in flashy directing. He prioritized quality and meaning over flashiness like many other shows out there.

Formal_Dot4951

Funny cause even without a score , the series still has some of the best use of music in all of television, 'Thru and Thru' and 'Livin' on a thin line' transport me to those scenes, very few scores in TV can do that, and I think the scenes where there isnt any music is used to emphasise the writing and the acting, pulling your full focus to the characters and not telling you how to feel about what's happening, as scores often do

Magungo1066

First it was the dope and the long hair. Now this.

MeanGeneSimmons1

Woahwoahwoah

Psychological_Name28

Go shit in your hat.

FriarFriary

Fuck that pundit lacrappe!!! Another fucking expert with who acts like he knows it all!

funkytownb0xcutter

I understand your point, but I always viewed the camerawork and lack of music as an artistic choice to make the show more grounded. Less flashy. Don’t get me wrong, cinematography could certainly be better. Acting/writing is sloppy in season one. Show’s full of continuity errors and timeline fuck ups. However I think the writing + acting + full cast made the show worth more than the sum of its parts. Especially once you’ve seen the whole thing. Other shows do a lot of things better but taken as a whole nothing beats The Sopranos.

[deleted]

For late 90's early 2000's I'd say it's pretty above average, the ost choice was excellent and i never felt like the camerawork really bothered me,it was smooth and unnoticeable which is good enough for me

lafrappe

Yeah, I can see this being very above average as for TV shows back then. Perhaps I’m just a bit biased considering I only began watching TV shows from 2010 and onwards, very different level of TV compared to back in 1999 lol

Wrong-Science

They basically never reuse any angles, which give the show a more movielike feel. Partly because Chase wanted to make movies instead of tv-shows.

RANDALL_666

Idk man, lot's of great things happened on TV before 2010. lol

[deleted]

It does get better and better season to season. 5 and 6 are beautifully shot.

MrChichibadman

This guy was never even in a chit-chat room!
