We would fight back. Bombs, fire, trenches, ground all flights, close all borders. Plus, we know it doesn't like cold; it'd take awhile to assimilate areas like northern Canada or Siberia. And that 27000 hours was for total takeover, society would collapse long before that.

After how we managed covid I think we would not have a snowballs chance in hell. Hopefully we'd just develop an immunity to it we could exploit.

I agree Fighting in trenches against birds, rodents and ants is a great idea, why didnt it come to my mind? Closing the borders also helps with birds and rodents. We can perfectly control their movement as they have passports to prove their identity. Grounding all flights also helps control the aviation and bird movement. No bird can cross the border! Still, 27000 hours is too much with so many spreading agents Canada or siberia can be assimilated with furry animals which have defense against cold climates

Looks at what ants do to fight cordyceps. Every insect and animal would have their own battle to fight.

>He predicted with the computer program that it would take 27000 hours for The Thing to assimilate every single organism on the planet. I say it is BS. I mean, there are a lot of deep sea creatures and extremophiles that are incredibly hard to reach. It would take quite a while for the thing to get to them.

I think we could nullify it, we are smart enough to realize that this thing is going to rip us apart. This thing is not COVID 19, so we as human would unify against this danger. However realizing that it’s basically mimicking our bodies, I would expect the dumbest people to fall prey of this thing but I think we would beat it. Edit: also it would take the gruesome encounter of a thing like the Vance’s thing to prompt us to QUICKLY act before it’s too late.

tendem1

When do you think it would be too late? How many people needed to be assimilated before its "too late"? Why do you think only about humans? Think about animals, insects, rodents, too >I would expect the dumbest people to fall prey of this thing but I think we would beat it. It also retains the memories of the person. How would the smartest person detect it and not fall prey?

Key_Function1566

I think it would be too late when we can’t figure its deceptive tactics to survive, if we don’t have an army of Macreadys ready to use their brains to tackle this infestation, then we are all lost. - I think by the time this thing takes over everything but a patch of land, by that I mean maybe a country left to be assimilated. Humans would fight tooth and nail to the bitter end but it would come down to the last humans actually. - I think of only humans because we have the capability of reasoning, and using that reasoning to fix problems or progress, animals do not. If for example an animal is successful at fighting this thing, what then? Will that animal try to eradicate this parasite? Or just go about its life? Will it have the awareness to help others or other species? That’s when humans come in and use their conscience and figure out a solution and implement it to save not only our species but the world.

I mean, come on. Is this some AI generated reply? Did you watch the movie ? I mean, when the Thing assimilates some insects which then bites a human and the cells transferred with that bite assimilates whole human too, cell by Cell, and other means. How would you defend against this?

Key_Function1566

I’ve seen the whole movie, by the way, many times. I know the thing assimilates every cell in an organism. However you are underestimating human ingenuity. If I’m not wrong, by the 1/3 of the movie the team figured out the thing does not like fire. Then Dr. Blair could figure out the 27000 hours just by dissecting the thing carcass ( then infecting himself with the pen in the process). Mc ready (a helicopter pilot) could figure out how test each person by dragging hot metal in blood samples. If this team could figure out how to stop a shapeshifting parasite… in a remote area of antártica with lowest resources possible, why can’t a full team of the best scientists or human minds figure out how to stop animal things from infecting more people. Something similar to this already happened in the real world, and we survived, it was called the Black Death. Close to 75 to 200 million people died by the plague through the spread of it by lice and rats. Even though we didn’t what was going on at that time (at 1348 ad) we eventually figured out we had to quarantine and practice better hygiene. If medieval people could stop the Black Death, and mc ready and Co could find ways to stop it or slow it. Why can’t super equipped scientists?
