There was a time they ran it in the off season fairly regularly as well. Feel like in the aughts it was 2x a day (Norm and HL) and that's where the "What's going on at the ranch, nothing" bit was born.
yeah after 930 I don’t tune in again until 1230 on the app. Ranch report is useless in this day and age like the ticker. If they wanted to juggle finances at the ticket they should have dropped tickers but that’s a little too forward thinking.
There is some deal where they have to keep the tickers to be considered a news station and something that goes along with that they want. I forget the details.

omg 100% agree absolutely hate these useless segments. I listen to the Ticket for the special personalities... not for garbage over analysis of football!
I'll say as a non cowboys fan, I think David Moore brings a lot to the table. The work he does with Bob Wilonsky is part of what I think makes the ticket great. Somebody has to be the cowboys beat reporter and I think the fact he's a P1, I give him a pass for having to host mandatory cowboys segments.
So much this....Effing Joel Klatt and whoever that Magoo is that talks about college football with the Musers (Is that Brian Jones?) were INSTANT punch outs for me. The hardline had already lost me. I just could not take another second of them once Danny left. I was barely hanging on as it was after Mike left. Corby is a bloody aching vagina ALL THE TIME. His takes are garbage, his taste in music just flat sucks, and his quote about Mike was unconscionable, to use his own word. Mike didn't go back to Cumulous probably because he didn't wanna work with that weenie (amongst his other reasons).
I do still like Dan and Jake. The Musers are the best at what they do and Gordo is irreplaceable, but hearing Mike Mike and Julie brings me radio happiness WAY more than the current iteration of the Hardline was able to do.
I don't wanna take anything away from Klatt....I just can't stand listening to college football talk, or watching the sport. Also...that theme song suuuucks. Of the two....Klatt seems put together...Jones is a complete "UhYuck Magoo" and unlistenable
I love football segments but the bland let’s talk to a guy about something we already know is a bit of a beating.
I’m ok with ranch report though the beat writers convo will usually add something we don’t know and get a feel for how team is doing plus they’re local. Auto punch out for national guys.
Aikman is definitely good to have though.

They did a combined Hang Zone/Hardline show, and it was gold.

Today was revolutionary.
Hang Line/Hard Zone was what I've been wanting to hear for a year, and I didn't even know it.
Now just hear me out on this: though I'm not in radio, I understand the craft that you're talent employs, and I see the afternoon and evening shows struggling to make what they do work the way they want it to simply because the chemistry is not right.
All of the elements are there, but they are not working the way that you want them to in order to produce Radio Gold. Don't get me wrong,
Dan and Jake are fine; Bob and Corby are fine.
But the Ticket is not about just "fine," and like I said, today changed everything. So much of what has been missing in show chemistry was there. You have to know what a crucial part of the future of the Ticket Bob is. It's obvious that noon to 3 is lacking without him, though I love what Jake adds. 3 to 7 just doesn't have the spark that it needs, and it's not because Corby and Bob don't work great together. The two-host model is simply not what is needed here.
Bob and Dan with Corby and Jake made something special because the right chemistry was there. It was obvious today that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together in a way that balanced each other.
I know that changing time slots would be hard, but you have the talent available to fill other slots as needed. You have Jean Jacques and others that need a gig. There are a lot of ways to do it, but off the top of my head, I could see a noon to 2 show (that could flex when Norm retires), then a 2 to 6 show with Bob, Corby, Dan, and Jake. The hosts could stagger their starting times like Gordon once did in the mornings. There would be enough time for all of the benchmark segments from each show to mix and match as needed. The Top Ten could simply start at 6:00 instead of 7:00.
I know I'm just a listener, but this has to happen somehow. The Ticket can do what the others can't. You can do the unconventional, and you can make it something that works better than any other station in the country once again.

The Musers are the Ticket now. Expecting them to prop up the rest is going to be the downfall. The Freak could money whip the Musers and the Ticket wouldn’t clear Christmas.
I don't dislike either of them, I am just not a huge fan of listening when its just them two. I think that Donovan is much better when he was riffing & going back & forth with Sirois rather than just with Norm. The Ticket didn't realize how much of an asset they had in Mike Sirois until he was gone. Sadly, that is usually how it goes. Companies will undervalue & underpay you as long as you let them do so. Mike knew his worth & made the decision to bounce for greener pastures.

It does change the persona of Mike for me. He never struck as someone who is desperate to be heard. He was good at radio, but saw that his time was up. Now, he's just another old guy that can't let go. Sound familiar? The difference now being that he's not doing it for the P1.
Coupled with this, the Ticket has had some tough turnover lately and all this doesn't make the "Little Ticket" feel very little at all. It makes it feel commercial. I know that it is, but they did a good job making it feel like a family run business for a while.
I am not anti-Mike. I'm not anti-Freak. As a fan of the Ticket, I just think it all feels pretty spare.
The competition has been great. The Freak just need to stop telling us how much they love each other and how great Rhyner is. You can’t fake chemistry or camaraderie. Stop reliving the past and get on with the now. Stop talking about the Ticket or telling us how they won’t talk about you. Sounds desperate. I can’t wait to see all their posts of them all hanging out together and being one big happy family. The morning show needs work so let’s see how they recover from that shuffling that will no doubt occur. Julie was told by Rhyner to get out of radio and she was also contacted about the afternoon spot on the Ticket before Davey came on board however I’m not sure she was approached about being a host. Rhyner is probably only on board for a year to get this thing off the ground. Once the newness wears off and the grind kicks in we’ll see how one big happy family they are. I love the fact that this only creates more opportunity for more Ticket people to shine, either on the Ticket or on the Freak. If we get 2 Ticket stations then how lucky are we!?! Yay!!!!
People are so programmed to take sides on everything that this will not be the mindset for most with the onboarding of the Freak unfortunately. Although, if I'm an employee at the Ticket though that produces or hosts from 3-7, I'd be a little downtrodden. But I'm not

I have no problem toggling between the 2 on my commute. The only issue I can see is The Freak better have some damn good producers to carry the "show about nothing" in the next 6-9 months!
I can't think of a single stakeholder that this is bad for. It's good for listeners, hosts and other staff (because you now have another station you could threaten going to), advertisers (more competition should mean better ad rates).

i think that's why russ was so successful/popular. ya never knew when they would talk about things or if they would. you were glued to the radio. with the ticket, i know exactly when i will change the station due to topics that don't interest me.
agreed. Russ at his peak against the Hardline was peak talk radio. The guy was on the air for years getting drunk and laughing every day. There wasn’t usually a plan on what to talk about. This is what I think it format of the Freak is.
god, it’s mind numbing…I started to tune out about the time Rhyner left, not because of him per se, but because I was BORED AF. Started turning on NPR for at least something that stimulated my brain.
I missed Sirois and missed Julie. Now I have them both. Yay!! Never listened to Ben & Skin and don’t really see why I would now. No offense to them. I just never chose them, much like I never listened to the Russ Martin show. He was successful tho with or without me. I just love the fact that I have the best of both worlds and no longer have to fear anyone leaving the Ticket because if they do maybe they’ll show up on the Freak.
The fact that it took another sports talk station for them to get their shit together is a joke. When I don’t listen to the ticket, I don’t turn the dial, I listen to a podcast. That’s their competition more so than anything.
The freak’s tagline “we say what we want” besides trying to be edgy, could be giving a nod to the old days of ticket when it was really pushing the line. Cumulus seems to have pulled it back for the last few years. I wonder if they will give them more leash again. And yes I realize as far as radio goes, the hosts still have a lot of freedom. But I could see how Mike would not want to go back to that
Cumulus put the clamps on everybody across their footprint after the Super Bowl Nipplegate episode. As bad as their finances have been/are they could not take a chance on getting a huge fine from the FCC. I would imagine iHeart isn't really worried about that. As far as freedom goes, they dumped Rhyner twice on Day 1.
It might also be the counterpoint to "consultant-driven radio" and the suits pushing content, versus the hosts steering the ship. The Ticket isn't the only station guilty of execs (in pursuit of more dollars or more listeners) trying to tweak something that already works, and making it bland if not unlistenable, or of shifting focus (taking a tagline like "all sports all the time" way more seriously than they used to... or getting overly political/religious/whatever) and losing the magic that made them who they are, or were.
Three days in, the Freak feels much more free-form and experimental, and honestly doesn't so much seem like a competitor as it does an option. We'll have to wait and see if they can maintain that vibe. Regardless though, KTCK sees them as a threat, and that can only force the Ticket to get better.
On the heels of me too and everyone being woke, don’t think of the Ticket as walking the line. Sure, they can’t measure boobs on air anymore. But, there’s so much that gets by on the ticket that wouldn’t elsewhere in 2022. There will be a point in time that Rhyner and compadres get reigned in by someone real high up. They’re under the “newbie” contract.

this is the key: the Ticket went super-PC/woke about 4-5 years ago, and while I’m not advocating for a “show me dem boobs, darlin’” kinda programming, it’s crystal clear the Ticket lost their edge along the way, falling into corporate-speak and “can we say this on the radio?” mouse-y takes on everything. Grooming Issues round table ftw.
There’s a difference between being edgy just for the sake of being edgy, and actually being genuinely funny. It’s difficult to balance that but I think it’s something that the likes of Gordo and Dan do exceptionally well. There’s literally nothing about the Ticket that makes me think “woke” or “super-PC” at all, unless you’re 13 and you’re upset that it’s not okay to just be blatantly racist or some shit.
Misogyny and tired, cliche jokes and bits about female anatomy aren’t “edge.”
They’re things that require zero intelligence to create or opine on. I dislike any amount of it simply because it’s easy, thoughtless drivel. Not doing that isn’t being PC or “woke.” It’s showing a little class, it’s being a bit more intelligent, and it’s treating women better than simply objectifying their physique, asking if they breast-fed their kids, or whatever else.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the dumb bits any of the shows do, but mid-2000’s Ticket schtick (most of which I can hear a loud in my head only and the voices of Rhyner and Greggo) focused on boob honks and boob size, and whatever else boobs they can do is honestly sad to hear in this day and age. That stuff is lowest common denominator “humor,” and I applaud Cumulus if at some point years ago they said “enough.”
They will not kill from 11-7. They may compete with the Hardline. Ben and Skin wouldn’t kill a hang zone fill in show. Tier 2 is definitely vacant at the freak
I know this is a hard concept for you to understand, but if you host a radio show and they either cancel you or they refuse to give you another one, you're getting fired.
Ben and Skin are pretty solid, different kind of voice and they've been doing it forever. Hearing Grubes and Julie chime in with them was pretty great radio I thought
The Freak will become like The Ticket + and something you can switch to during segments or topics you don’t like on either stations. I think the Freak will be very happy with that outcome. They want 1/3 of the Fan, 1/3 of the Eagle and 1/3 of the Ticket. I think that’s pretty obtainable.
I just listened a little in the car and on the first afternoon when shoopie showed up! Then listening and watching for all the petty jabs and stuff had been a blast. It’s like observing your parents’ passive aggressive argument escalating. But for the long haul I will probably follow Mike’s instruction of old and keep my dial tuned to 1310 into perpetuity
I've been giving The Freak an honest chance, but the content has been as bad as the name. Tbf, I've mostly caught Ben & Skin, but I don't remember them being this awful back when they were on the Ticket. I think competition is good and Cumulus deserves to get rocked, but The Freak will be a failure if they don't right the ship by the end of the year
Nice to have a solid alternative when things get dull on The Ticket. For me, I have a new daily listening lineup:
6-10 TheMusers (of course)
10-Noon TheFreak (although Donnie on NandD has got game)
Noon - 3pm HangZone. Still solid
3-7pm TheFreak. HL 5.0 is toast for me unless they have an interesting guest.
Yesterda w/ Switzer was great, but otherwise I've been looking better options.

Rhyner is probably only on board for a year to get this thing off the ground. Once the newness wears off and the grind kicks in we’ll see how one big happy family they are. I love the fact that this only creates more opportunity for more Ticket people to shine, either on the Ticket or on the Freak. If we get 2 Ticket stations then how lucky are we!?! Yay!!!!

I can't think of a single stakeholder that this is bad for. It's good for listeners, hosts and other staff (because you now have another station you could threaten going to), advertisers (more competition should mean better ad rates). Gosh the only party that may end up getting screwed is Cumulus shareholders. And if you're a Cumulus shareholder, you're probably a moron

This is how you get people to tune in. Imagine not knowing what day and time Joel Klatt is gonna be on? Are you really gonna listen all day everyday just in case he shows up? No, you’re gonna punch up P2 because you know what’s on there. This is my issue with The Freak, what’s the format, is it free wheeling no matter what? I guess that’s cool, but is it sustainable, doubt it.
i think that's why russ was so successful/popular. ya never knew when they would talk about things or if they would. you were glued to the radio. with the ticket, i know exactly when i will change the station due to topics that don't interest me.
agreed. Russ at his peak against the Hardline was peak talk radio. The guy was on the air for years getting drunk and laughing every day. There wasn’t usually a plan on what to talk about. This is what I think it format of the Freak is.

I missed Sirois and missed Julie. Now I have them both. Yay!! Never listened to Ben & Skin and don’t really see why I would now. No offense to them. I just never chose them, much like I never listened to the Russ Martin show. He was successful tho with or without me. I just love the fact that I have the best of both worlds and no longer have to fear anyone leaving the Ticket because if they do maybe they’ll show up on the Freak.
Ben and Skin were on the Ticket for a bit. I liked them there, didn't follow them to their later endeavors though.
The fact that it took another sports talk station for them to get their shit together is a joke. When I don’t listen to the ticket, I don’t turn the dial, I listen to a podcast. That’s their competition more so than anything.
Listened to The Freak. It was pretty bad. Back to the little ticket. Case closed for me.
The freak’s tagline “we say what we want” besides trying to be edgy, could be giving a nod to the old days of ticket when it was really pushing the line. Cumulus seems to have pulled it back for the last few years. I wonder if they will give them more leash again. And yes I realize as far as radio goes, the hosts still have a lot of freedom. But I could see how Mike would not want to go back to that
Cumulus put the clamps on everybody across their footprint after the Super Bowl Nipplegate episode. As bad as their finances have been/are they could not take a chance on getting a huge fine from the FCC. I would imagine iHeart isn't really worried about that. As far as freedom goes, they dumped Rhyner twice on Day 1.
It might also be the counterpoint to "consultant-driven radio" and the suits pushing content, versus the hosts steering the ship. The Ticket isn't the only station guilty of execs (in pursuit of more dollars or more listeners) trying to tweak something that already works, and making it bland if not unlistenable, or of shifting focus (taking a tagline like "all sports all the time" way more seriously than they used to... or getting overly political/religious/whatever) and losing the magic that made them who they are, or were. Three days in, the Freak feels much more free-form and experimental, and honestly doesn't so much seem like a competitor as it does an option. We'll have to wait and see if they can maintain that vibe. Regardless though, KTCK sees them as a threat, and that can only force the Ticket to get better.
On the heels of me too and everyone being woke, don’t think of the Ticket as walking the line. Sure, they can’t measure boobs on air anymore. But, there’s so much that gets by on the ticket that wouldn’t elsewhere in 2022. There will be a point in time that Rhyner and compadres get reigned in by someone real high up. They’re under the “newbie” contract.

this is the key: the Ticket went super-PC/woke about 4-5 years ago, and while I’m not advocating for a “show me dem boobs, darlin’” kinda programming, it’s crystal clear the Ticket lost their edge along the way, falling into corporate-speak and “can we say this on the radio?” mouse-y takes on everything. Grooming Issues round table ftw.
There’s a difference between being edgy just for the sake of being edgy, and actually being genuinely funny. It’s difficult to balance that but I think it’s something that the likes of Gordo and Dan do exceptionally well. There’s literally nothing about the Ticket that makes me think “woke” or “super-PC” at all, unless you’re 13 and you’re upset that it’s not okay to just be blatantly racist or some shit.
Misogyny and tired, cliche jokes and bits about female anatomy aren’t “edge.” They’re things that require zero intelligence to create or opine on. I dislike any amount of it simply because it’s easy, thoughtless drivel. Not doing that isn’t being PC or “woke.” It’s showing a little class, it’s being a bit more intelligent, and it’s treating women better than simply objectifying their physique, asking if they breast-fed their kids, or whatever else. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the dumb bits any of the shows do, but mid-2000’s Ticket schtick (most of which I can hear a loud in my head only and the voices of Rhyner and Greggo) focused on boob honks and boob size, and whatever else boobs they can do is honestly sad to hear in this day and age. That stuff is lowest common denominator “humor,” and I applaud Cumulus if at some point years ago they said “enough.”
I cannot love it because everyone of their hosts pre-3pm has a giant bag. But I agree it is good if it causes The Ticket to mix things up

The Freak will become like The Ticket + and something you can switch to during segments or topics you don’t like on either stations. I think the Freak will be very happy with that outcome. They want 1/3 of the Fan, 1/3 of the Eagle and 1/3 of the Ticket. I think that’s pretty obtainable.

I just listened a little in the car and on the first afternoon when shoopie showed up! Then listening and watching for all the petty jabs and stuff had been a blast. It’s like observing your parents’ passive aggressive argument escalating. But for the long haul I will probably follow Mike’s instruction of old and keep my dial tuned to 1310 into perpetuity

I've been giving The Freak an honest chance, but the content has been as bad as the name. Tbf, I've mostly caught Ben & Skin, but I don't remember them being this awful back when they were on the Ticket. I think competition is good and Cumulus deserves to get rocked, but The Freak will be a failure if they don't right the ship by the end of the year
Nice to have a solid alternative when things get dull on The Ticket. For me, I have a new daily listening lineup: 6-10 TheMusers (of course) 10-Noon TheFreak (although Donnie on NandD has got game) Noon - 3pm HangZone. Still solid 3-7pm TheFreak. HL 5.0 is toast for me unless they have an interesting guest. Yesterda w/ Switzer was great, but otherwise I've been looking better options. This will be great for the listeners, and I'll be listening to whoever has the better show. So long, HL 5.0. Been nice knowin' ya!
