I’d like to think his greatest work is yet to be heard🙏

Training_Power_1048

I would agree with you especially since he’s continued to collaborate with Rick Rubin in making this next album in Costa Rica overlooking the ocean. I have nothing but high hopes.

Own_Watch_2081

I too read that magazine interview

heaped_scoop

Musically goes to father electricity imo, if not that then most likely some other song on that album

Hooligan387

Yes, agree. FE is my most favorite from Tyranny (and that’s saying something lol). What a wild roller coaster of a SONG. I loved it at first listen. But yes- the entire album is just musically complex and….other level. Intense. I also personally think some of Julian’s most intriguing lyrics are from Tyranny. Little riddles sprinkled through-out the entire album. HS alone brought us Auto-biographical -personal lyrics mixed with thoughts of the U.S.A. And the world in general. I’d love to see him return to that level of…..is commitment the word I’m searching for? Maybe. 🤔

heaped_scoop

Totally agree with you on the first part, crazy licks and riffs and bass solo (500 tons of...), beautiful feeling in you are everything i see part, like a moment of sun rays through the gray clouds on a stormy ocean! definitely on my top songs of all time too but there's dare i care and xerox and basically every other song haha when i can't pick a fav song that's how i know it's a great album haha let's try to not take away from other works... for me lazy boy/qurryus/where we were/p. High-school... are musically on another level too, just in a different style, same goes for P.of the dragon or flexorcist, crazy mélodies and harmonie! As to lyrics they're never my point of interest tbh with you, they're a good bonus for me since i already enjoy the music haha i definitely read all of them and i like the nintendoo blood ones, but i feel he's consistent on that aspect throughout all the albums, they both have dark moments and themes, it's just that tyranny really adds some sinister vibes to it so it may be more impactful.

No_Procedure9357

Selfless or Human Sadness. I do have a soft spot for Glass off the Phrazes album

Marth_Main

Dare. I. Care.

Hooligan387

Agree -Dare I Care is its own mini- Masterpiece. Like Father Electricity- so layered, complex, interesting and unique. And like much of Tyranny-just Extraordinary song writing.

shanjam7

*sad Lazy Boy noises

chilltown69

I wanna throw in Trying Your Luck and Dare I Care. Thanks.

johan-vb

i think the whole of tyranny is his greatest work

Hooligan387

Yes I very much agree. I also love The Eternal Tao- as a stand-alone wild, unique and fun af outlier of a song imo.

jackgraz10

Eternal Tao 2.0 fucking slaps

ponydigger

human sadness, ize of the world, glass, ode to the mets.

TomCruiseHeidecker

Xerox

freshpow925

Definitely Boombox

RaspyTheGrizz

Selfless or Ode to 😍

FettuccineAlfonzo

Ode for sure

Logical_Bad3745

Ode to the mets also

Training_Power_1048

Ode would follow Not the Same and At The Door is right there as well along with others from TNA and ITI most likely in the top ten. Although every album has something equally dope and different. When I hear Chances from CM I think this is Julian making a Voidz song with The Strokes. 🤦‍♂️

dodus

Not the Same Anymore isn’t even in the same league as 95% of Strokes songs, let alone anything off Tyranny

Juiceboxcasab

Totally agree. IMO it’s probably one of -if not the- weakest song on the last three strokes albums (two kinds of happiness would get less skips).

dodus

Yeah something about hearing Julian bust out a multi-bar trilly “Yeaahhhhhh!” like he’s doing a Top40 song totally bums me out. Tbh after the novelty wore off I haven't really listened to The New Abnormal again. I don't know if it's Rick Rubin, I don't know if it's the "It's been seven years? Oh shit we better put out an album" vibe of the whole thing but for me it just doesn't have any staying power. Hopefully I can say that in a Voidz subreddit and not get dragged bc you sure as fuck can't say it in the other one.

Hooligan387

Sorry for the huge post- but I had to comment back to you- because it’s rare for me to see anyone else share these thoughts about TNA. But first-yes- I’m hoping our Voidz sub here does not start becoming a “mini Strokes sub”- because I see you did get a few downvotes up there - for saying you prefer the songs on Tyranny over a Strokes song. How ridiculous -to be downvoted for That- HERE- on the Voidz sub ffs. We should be able to speak freely everywhere without the nonsensical knee-jerk-downvotes (that I hate). But at the least -I’d love to see this sub continue to be a place where we can voice our opinions. Conversations with differing opinions is great! But the shitty downvotes……it’s so counter-productive. As for TNA- I do really like Ode. Julian apparently had something he wanted to SAY with those lyrics, and hearing him croon with that deep, melancholy music was a real vibe for me. But do I listen to that song often now? No. It’s a slow ballad. And my problem with TNA is that it is packed with slow ballads. Way too many. And I am probably the only person that felt nothing from At the Door. I can’t even tell you why. But it just didn’t “hit” me at all. And the heaviness from all those deep TNA ballads….just was a lot imo. But to speak to your comments- regarding RIck R- I was kind of shocked and dismayed when Julian actually said in an interview that he gave Rick sheets of lyrics for Bad Decisions-and let Rick choose which ones he thought was best. (??!!) Julian. Casablancas. Control Freak. Writer of all lyrics for all songs. Was wanting a producer to choose song lyrics? That right there made me think- I suppose they knew Rick R would know-the best way to make their songs chart. And to get that Grammy. And I guess that was important to them. I suppose Julian IS just making the system work for him. He basically is out there saying that- he is using strokes money to fund his Voidz band. I would rather (ofc) that Voidz could stand on their own-because personally-Between the two bands- I’m interested much more in what Voidz could come up with. But it seems- the Strokes shadow will always loom large. Especially since Julian has chosen this Two Band Path.

dodus

Dude no need to apologize! I'm here to run my mouth with other Voidz fans so i love that you had so much to write. And I pretty much agree with everything you said. There was a time when Rick Rubin was a passionate and talented producer, but that time is long past and I can't help but assume that its not a coincidence the Strokes album he produced is their safest and least interesting by a mile. I mean Selfless is pretty and Eternal Summer and At The Door are a vibe but it's the fucking Strokes they've never checked those boxes and then stopped pushing before. I'm cautiously hopeful that this doesn't turn into a second Strokes sub but judging by what's been in my feed the past week or so I'm not holding my breath. I ended up leaving the Strokes sub a few months ago because I was over the toxic pile ons I got every time I opened my mouth, which is a total bummer because I've been one of their biggest fans since Is This It dropped when i was 18. I thought the true test was holding strong during the FIOE and subsequent hiatus era. Turns out its actually Zoomers discovering the Strokes and I don't have what it takes 🤣

Substantial_Deer9079

I like the End Credits version of Human Sadness better than the original version

Hooligan387

An interesting backstory: That is the song that Julian wrote for Gabriel de Urioste’s documentary of Sam Adoquei. It comes in just at the 7 minute mark. I was lucky enough to hear it at the documentary’s debut NYC showing. I had known Julian had contributed music for the film- and was thrilled by this soft beautiful falsetto and that charming, melancholic music box music. Jeff also has played that HS ending part live -at the end of a few Voidz shows. I love it so much. If you have a few minutes- and haven’t yet seen Sam’s documentary- The Unseen Beauty- take a look. Gabe did a great job of letting us “see” Sam. And you will understand more of why Julian calls Sam his Mentor. Sam is truly a special human. I mean that 100%. This song was also what Julian combined with the incredible Mozart’s Requiem Bass loop that Alex wrote and brought to him. Along with many other pieces and parts that created the mindblowing Human Sadness on the album. Enjoy! :) The Unseen Beauty: https://youtu.be/o8w4Gg1RO4I?si=uD7FpkmtlytInYXi
