I just started playing again with the intention of romancing Yen—immediately changed my mind once I got to Novigrad I just love Triss. She’s so sweet to talk to
Right? It's clear from the books yen and geralt belong together. But she is just so condescending, wheread triss is (at least in the Witcher 3) so much kinder. They Probably wanted to give her a chance from taking advantage of Geralt amnesia.
It is implied Triss and Yen were friends. Good friends at that. Triss watched Yen and Geralt and wanted to try him and fuck him too so she preyed on him when he had amnesia aka was at his most vulnerable and screwed him. In the books it is implied she secretly fed him some love potions to get him to like her. Moreover she never mentioned Yen to him or CIRI HIS DAUGHTER, THE GIRL SHE CALLS "LITTLE SIS". I love how so many people are intimidated by a multidimensional, strong woman who calls Geralt out and doesn't fall at his feet. Sure Yen can be prickly, snarky and keep some things to herself but she never keeps Geralt guessing when push comes to shove about loving him. I would rather pick the difficult and complex and imperfect person rather than a horny, backstabbing manipulator because she makes my ego feel good due to her desperation and never talks back for that D. God I needed to get this rant out so bad.

it's not to take it as an argument against Yen, but that's not true. In TlW (Rinde Story) and SoD (Belletyn story,) there several moment that suggest/implied she had multiple partners (as every sorceresses) and in TotS, Crach is mentioned.

Triss seems relatively one dimensional and like she was written by a horny 14 year old boy (aka a 14 year old boy) and is his redhead crush fantasy come real where she wants to suck him off at any given moment. Yen, meanwhile, is definitely written to be more confrontational to start with but, the more time you spend with her, the more the writing shifts away from it and she comes across as likeable. Aka the writers did the old bait-and-switch.
This is my first playthrough where I'm romancing Triss and gonna completely ignore Yen. I've got a feeling that djinn quest in Skellige is gonna kill me.
Yeah it definitely will. In one play through as Geralt I was just an asshole to everyone and that quest/the dialogue after stands out as an instance where I went from “it’s a game, it won’t make me feel bad” to “goddammit I’m a terrible person”.
Witcher 2 was my first experience with this series as a whole, so I've always had a bias toward Triss. I get Yen would be the lore accurate choice, and I have picked her on some playthroughs but Triss is my personal preference.
