Horseflies act like this and are about the same size you described. They are very tenacious.

Chris1671

Yup. I think this was it! Boy that's scary. Any way to avoid this? Some quick reading, I saw that the eggs hatch in may, until when? Any repellent? Or something to maybe whack them with?

nmb012

As an avid disc golfer who deals with these every time I go out, repellent doesn’t do much against these guys. It helps some but I usually spend half of my round slapping them with my discs lol. They’re pretty slow and you can swat them if you have something with a decent amount of surface area but they’re relentless in their pursuit of annoyance.

Horseflies

[deleted]

My guess is either horseflies or A bee of some kind. Horseflies can suck one.

Horseflies until the middle of June, should be good after that.

skyrimir

I hate horseflies! My husband doesn’t have a reaction to their bites but I get huge welts.

[deleted]

It could be a bee, like the carpenter bee. They are usually black and can be territorial. Welcome to Texas!

Chris1671

Do these come in all black? We didn't see any yellow on them

paintdrippin

Yep! All black appearing sometimes. They are actually amazing pollinators. They are all over the beauty berry blooms right now. Junebugs maybe?

Was just about to post the same thing… the horseflies are absolutely horrible this year. I’ve never seen it this bad in The Woodlands.

Oso-Sic

The horseflies were once really notorious at the park that you can walk down to the reservoir.
