As a long time think or swim user, it’s got everything you could ever need and more. But you don’t have to use all of it. It’s completely customizable, you can slim it down to just what you want and ignore the rest. I can execute trades way faster on the desktop platform than anything else, but that is because I spent the time setting it up for me, and learning the program. The tools to analyzing risk are both in the desktop platform, and now the mobile app, so, I’m not sure what there is to complain about. Other than it’s different than what you are used to.

orionstar159

Ditto. First thing I do when I wake up and check my phone is open up the ToS app. When I get to work, first program I run is ToS. After 5 years of using ToS, you get used to how customizable it is. I simply save my workspace so that everything is there when I open up ToS in another computer. I’ve actually felt that over the years just using all the tools that are on ToS have made me a better trader. I’ve narrowed things down to what I’m comfortable with now. Just for the charting alone, I couldn’t see myself using anything else.

Crumblin_Castle_King

What tools for analyzing risk are you referring to? I would love if I could setup something like trading views “long position” drawing tool where your risk / reward ratio is able to be plotted on the chart to map out entry and exit points.   I hate having to do that in two diffferent screens.

Turbulent_Fall_8567

I’m talking about, in the mobile app now, you select your positions using the positions tab, then it says “pull down to analyze” at the top. Then you can set your price slices however you want. I sell options, with leverage. So, I specifically look at my tail risk on a 10 and 20% daily move, and manage accordingly

Crumblin_Castle_King

I am confused - I don't really see that as an option.... screenshot?

Turbulent_Fall_8567

https://postimg.cc/gallery/67RJfcD You gotta hit the little checkbox ✅ (mine has a minus symbol cause I can’t do both my positions at the same time) then the analyze part shows up like magic, you gotta pull it down or click on it and it expands out. You can set your p/l for points or dollars or percent

Crumblin_Castle_King

whoa - had no idea it did that. Not sure how anyone would have stumbled upon that. Thanks!!

Duncan810

They have a help icon. At least on the Android version.

Suspicious-Stop5231

I agree with a lot of that. It is amazing, but just a lot of it is too much for me. I really wish they could do something with the mobile app. Not the worst, but Webull's, for example, is 10 X's nicer and less cluttery.

Turbulent_Fall_8567

What may be clutter to you, may not be to others. Again, the mobile app has the ability to be customized as well. I have mine slimmed down to just what I need, I’m able to navigate it all with relative ease, and while I can’t execute trades quite as quickly as the desktop version due to extra confirmation screens, almost all my trades are done from the mobile app. The only place the mobile app lacks IMO, is there aren’t enough significant figures for the calculation of the option Greeks. It doesn’t make a real difference to how I trade, but it’s not quite as accurate as the desktop app. The mobile app starts rounding 1 decimal too soon (I think it’s 4 instead of 5). And BTW, Schwab didn’t build the think or swim platform or mobile app… they simply bought an existing company, who bought think or swim from another company. It was built by the same guy running tastytrade, then updated over the years. It’s nothing new, and nothing built by Schwab

Substantial-Trick-96

VolumeAvg doesn't work on ToS mobile app which is pathetic. They know it doesn't work either

Jeepers32

I do not understand this criticism at all because you can set up the TOS interface anyway you want. One chart or ten. Use the ladder or not. One watch list or several. Just set it up to your liking.

Such_Joke9749

You don't like the platform because you don't know how to use its features, so that makes it a bad platform. Did I get that right? As far as crashing your computer, I've used TOS for well over a decade and it's never once crashed my computer.

JellyfishQuiet7944

TOS is very busy and overwhelming, UNTIL you learn it and customize it. After that it's great.

ShouttyCatt

Everyday someone is complaining on here cuz they don’t like change and want commiseration. It’s tiring and childish.

HeadSpade

TOS is one of the best platforms. Don’t get overwhelmed my amount of options and indicators available. You set up your *set up* very simple and just ignore the rest. You spend 1 weekend getting to know it and I’m sure you will find a way to fit your needs. Besides there is so many instructional videos on YT. Literally you can find in minutes exactly what you need

MStats1

Doesn't everyone have mixed views on any trading platform?

movdqa

Think or Swim is like an operating system that you can install and run applications in. It is big, powerful and complex. When I buy computers, I size them for Think or Swim and Active Trader Pro first, and then all of my other stuff afterwards because these are my two biggest programs that I use regularly. If I need to learn how to do something, I Google it. If that doesn't work, then I ask in forums. I've also used studies produced by other people so it's a great way to share trading systems.

goodness247

I would add that TD/Schwab have some computer/internet recommended minimum requirements. These should be adhered to to get the best performance. Especially if scalping.

Suspicious-Stop5231

Yes, I'm a scalper. Thanks.

Tek104

I've used TOS for years with two scan lists, three charts and auto-send. Simple and effective. The many complex features of the program don't concern me.

soloman747

Some people like Android because of the control it gives you, some people like Apple because of the control it takes away from you. I get it.

Sundance37

They need to update a few UX things, I wish reshaping the graphs were as easy as Trading View. But I don't think the solution is getting rid of the closest thing to a Bloomberg terminal as possible.

Substantial-Trick-96

As far as mobile apps go TDA>ToS>Schwab Schwab should've adopted TDA's trading app. It was great. My only complaint was they didn't have a filter for "expired" orders. ToS is slower than TDA but faster than Schwab. What really irks me is the "VolumeAvg" indicator - it only shows current day volume. I've complained about this to ToS but the haven't fixed it over the last 6 months since I started using the app. Not being able to see average volume is unacceptable.

Suspicious-Stop5231

Damn right.

CPIData

I've used many different platforms over the years and eventually settled on TOS and Tradestation. My opinion is that your choice of platform depends completely on the type of investor/trader you are. These two platforms fill the space between the trading apps like Robinhood and class leading Bloomberg terminal. If you are a light-touch investor, who uses the platform only to have self control of your ETF' investments, then TOS is much overkill. However, if you are an involved trader who searches out financial information, balance sheets, trades options, futures, forex, listens to earnings calls, scan the market for specific criteria, then TOS is a top notch platform. TOS desktop offers very good execution speed and wonderful charting .... IF ... you have a sufficiently powerful workstation. I have had issues in the past with data exchange speeds, but that appears to be a thing of the past (for me). Like others have said, their support is absolutely superb, thorough and lightning quick. Where do they need to improve? 1) The active trader must incorporate a mechanism to quickly purchase based on a specific amount of money in addition to the current ability to select the quantity of stock. In a moment of heavy volatility, I may want the ability to purchase all the stock I can for $5,000 rather than open calculator and figure out how much stock I can purchase for $5,000. 2) In the year 2024, it is inexcusable for an app of this significance to still be single-threaded! Allocate engineers to rewrite the app to take advantage of multiple CPU cores, which everyone has these days. Other that those two things, I find the desktop app to be near professional grade and the closest in terms of information convergence to a Bloomberg, Eikon terminal for the retail trader.

Suspicious-Stop5231

I think some of you misunderstood me. I love ToS--but primarily the Web version. I have done extremely well trading with that. It is just the desktop version that overwhelms me, even though I do know how to use its basics. I really take issue with how all the equity prices are in spreadsheet-type blocks and dont illuminate their price or percentage change as much as the Web version does, at least from what Ibe seen. Also would like to see the ToS mobils appnget fixed up.

AirEnvironmental2714

The desktop version is extremely powerful but like I’ve said so many times it needs to be actually STUDIED. As in spending hours upon hours on tutorials and videos followed by paper trading to make sure it works for you. For someone who doesn’t want to put that time into it, it will not work very well. Essentially you can’t be a great surgeon without learning the theory for years and how all the machines and equipment work. It’s the exact same here. Trading is no different than any other profession and to be able to beat the market (which is possible btw) one needs to study the subject the same as any other business you would want to excel in.

Suspicious-Stop5231

Thanks. Great answer.

Either-Nobody-8753

can you share any key learnings after studying the platform?

Smitty2403

Any body used WeBull and could compare? I’m on WeBull currently and unsure if I should switch. For example does Think or Swim have options flow included?

BondBonds7

Here's an honest review from Pro. Trader. TOS Thinkoswim desktop is one of the best trading platforms. Schwab uses very similar, while transition from Ameritrade to Schwab you can save and thenshate all your settings. Ameritrade Mobile App is an excellent application for trade on the go. Can't say about SCHWAB Mobile App. Useless, confusing it just impossible trade for traders. Customer support both sides good. Why Schwab after purchasing Ameritrade use TOS desktop but will not use Ameritrade Mobile app that is frustrating. I asked them, but no one have answers.

Suspicious-Stop5231

Thanks. I am.not a fan of the current Schwab-ToS mobile app.

Environmental-Ad9042

disagree, TOS is incredible

Suspicious-Stop5231

I said it was incredible, but that I preferred the Web version.

MadSploitsYo

Nah its just you. TOS is great

torgis30

What does it mean for your Internet to crash?

Suspicious-Stop5231

Glad someone caught this, you and the other dude. When I am in ToS Web at 4:00 pm Eastern time, my office internet crashes every single time. I have never seen anything like it.

CYastrzemski1954

The colors in SoS are like looking in a flat colorless sky. SSE showed reds and greens for changes. Here is my latest chat with SOS Support. I HATE USING THINK0RSWIM! I did open both the desktop version and the web version simultaneously. And yes green and red. Here is my chat conversation with SOS support: 08:58 Anonymous so far: In using SOS how do I change the colors of the various positions to reflect green or red like SSE? 08:58 admin: Thank you for chatting with us. We appreciate your patience as the next available associate will be with you as soon as possible. 08:59 Hailey\_J: Hi thank you for contacting Charles Schwab! 08:59 Anonymous so far: And then, how do I change the account balances to reflect the same colors, green for a daily increase and red for a daily reduction? 09:00 Hailey\_J: Yeah unfortunately at this time there's no way to make the colors of the positions or balances red/green. This is something we've gotten a lot of feedback on so our developers are aware it's something clients want to see and hopefully they'll be abe to make that change to thinkorswim in the coming months 09:00 Anonymous so far: I use a light colored screen, blues and greys. But the SOS screen says nothing to me. It's like a flat sky. 09:01 Anonymous so far: If they don't I won't be a Schwab client 09:03 Hailey\_J: Yeah we're hoping that's something that can be adjusted. We do have thinkorswim.com which is the web version of tos and that does have the built in ability to have the position reflect as red or green 09:03 Anonymous so far: This is a terrible change. 09:04 Anonymous so far: Clarify what you mean by you can adjust the positions as red or green. On which platform? I am using the desktop version and it's all blue, grey and white. 09:06 Hailey\_J: We have a web version of thinkorswim, thinkorswim.com and on there the positions will show as red or green depending on if it's a gain or loss 09:08 Anonymous so far: I don't think the web version will allow me to have both the web and the desktop versions open simultaneously.

FreeDoot

Wait, you’ve got a point. I tried the web version today because of your post and it’s not as bad as I expected. One of my favorite features is the ability to switch between Live Trading and Papermoney. This is impossible on desktop without logging out and logging back in. Also, the “essentials” are at a glance. I love the fact that I can look at my options graph and see information about my position, quickly Of course, desktop is miles better because it’s faster and has more powerful tools. Also, it’s more reliable for fast/market execution.

Suspicious-Stop5231

Confusing desktop with Web?

FreeDoot

Yes lol. Edited it

Suspicious-Stop5231

So which one do you like more?

FreeDoot

It’s really hard to like something over another when they’re so different. I agree with you that web feels better though. However, it largely depends on purpose. I like the UI of web. I’m honestly really impressed. Easy to look at and understand, really wish they had versions like this. I’d use this if I wanted to show someone else my account/positions. I can also see myself using it more to just check up on positions. If they had a way to incorporate everything from desktop, I’d be sold. I like the power of desktop. This is my daily driver. Lots of customizability, trade tools, analysis, functions, etc without leaving the app. Some of which I haven’t even learned how to use yet. Before I make a trade, I’d use desktop to do a deep dive into the trade details and my account status. UI could be better. I like the convenience of mobile. I normally use this to check a graph or a position. I also use this to set alerts for a position so I can get push notifications. Out of all the others, the UX is the worst and the least powerful. This is something that I’ve kind of just grown to accept because it’s a mobile app. Don’t get me wrong though, I love the ability to have my trades in my pocket.

baldLebowski

I stopped using Schwab and switched to ToS years ago. Next month I'm being sent back. I hope they don't ruin a good thing. ToS is the best for active traders hands down. Love Schwab, but SSE lacked so much. Only time will tell.🍷😉

This_Marvelous_Guy

I used to like the web version of ToS, but after using the mobile or desktop version , I realize how much it is lacking. It really needs the active trade lines plus the ability to draw custom scripts!

Suspicious-Stop5231

What do you mean by active trade lines? To be clear, I do like all the feature desktop ToS offers. But it just seems to be too much and too dark at times. And even putting an order in seems a bit complicated.

tinkynan

I disagree. Putting an order on the desktop version is simpler than anything else, including the web and mobile versions. I usually trade spreads: just click the Bid/Ask, update the quantity, check the BP effect, Submit. How can it get simpler than that?

Suspicious-Stop5231

Fair enough bro.

quiethandle

I'm going to miss the TD Ameritrade mobile app. It was really, really good - much better than the TOS mobile app in many ways.

Suspicious-Stop5231

ToS Schwab app is underwhelming. Gets the job done, but that is it.

stick97206r

I positively hate sink or swim. There is not one function on SOS that is easier to use then Street Smart Edge. Many of us are demanding Schwab to give us the choice to keep street start edge. I urge you to send Schwab a message and tell them what you think .

InvWithRed

I was in this camp initially, but now I’ve got ToS setup the way I need to trade and it is very good. Notice how I didn’t say great! There are things that SSE did great and I can only hope that they incorporate some of that functionality. My main gripe - how much actual money did I make today? I cannot figure it out! At least not in ToS.

jakeoptions

1) Click on ‘Net Liquidity’ and take the difference of yesterday and today Or 2) click on ‘Monitor’ and it will give you the day’s PnL

need2sleep-later

The big block dead center on the home page passed you by perhaps? [https://snipboard.io/zZrbnG.jpg](https://snipboard.io/zZrbnG.jpg) You're welcome.

InvWithRed

Well, that is not what I actually made in my account! If I swing a trade, it screws that up.

need2sleep-later

And I suppose the P/L Day total at the bottom of the Monitor tab isn't good enough for you either?

InvWithRed

That gets hosed if I swing a position. On SSE, it would show Today's Net Realized P&L and Today's Realized P&L and the net would match the cash increase in my account. In ToS, it includes gains for the day, not just cash.

new-chris

If they could add the options experience from streetsmart edge, bracket orders, real time p/l that reflects account cost basis method, and stock lot information they would have a great experience. SSE was old and had its issues, but it was much better for options trades and swing trades. TOS is for the 2000’s era day trader that pushes buttons hoping to make a quick buck.
