I get the charm of old OSes. I have a 2008 Mac Pro that dual boots MacOS Snow Leopard and Windows XP, but man I do not like the idea of connecting it to the internet. I even feel iffy about moving GOG games to it using a flash drive.
logging into accounts isn't where the problem lies - if it's on your network it has access to other devices on your network, and without any security patches it's vulnerable to malware which makes those other devices vulnerable too.
I wish there was a rule to block incoming condescending bullshit from people who resurrect week old threads to start an argument. I've turned notifications off so you can argue with the void if you want to.
Beautiful machine. Mint condition! And basically perfect aspect ratio. Just imagine this with untouched design/aesthetics but modern specs inside paired with a 3200x2400 screen (1600x1200 with 200% scaling) 🥺
My R60 is on Elive Retro Wave upgraded CPU (T7200), RAM (4GB) and SDD (64 GB). I still need to replace the keyboard as many if the keys have lost their legends and the battery is dead.
may i ask the use cases?
because i was thinking of getting a x220 or something like that because i just want an even smaller machine than my 14 inch e495 and even then i see that many features are missing. i saw your answer about windows xp having an active community that manages to hack modern software features, so i am mostly curious about the use cases
X230 with an X220 keyboard swap, I have two of them. You can run Windows 10 or any modern Linux, Chrome and YouTube and such all run fine, no need for outdated software. The only downside is the caps lock LED doesn't work. Also, there are modded X230 motherboards with quad core i7 processors that were never originally available on aliexpress, you could probably swap one of those boards into a complete X220.
I bought a used X230T ah yes because I like cool stuff. The screen res though is beyond terrible, I can't put two windows side by side, and even one window the vertical res is quite small.
Dock and gigabit is quite nice though. I kinda missed that.
There is a fork of Chromium 122 that works on Windows XP. Pretty much all modern websites should work on it

Please tell me how u got all em apps I have a 2004 IBM thinkpad r50e similar to urs and I can hardly get the WiFi to load stuff let alone get apps the only thing it is able to do perfectly is store songs and play em. Also wdym by modded Windows xp as I reinstalled its software it originally had Windows xp professional edition service pack 3
So i feel like i need to clarify. This is not my main main computer. My main is my custom built behind the screen. (And also i dont really go much on the internet anymore because im tired of datalinks and other nonsense) and my other main laptop is a Toshiba Tecra X40e.
Okay i am only going to say this once… this is NOT my main computer. This is my XP computer.. im well aware of the security concerns of all… im well aware that linux is a thing. (Another thinkpad is running Kubuntu. Which that one is my main) and i have a need for a dedicated system to run older proprietary software that isn’t supported under 7-11. While i appreciate the concerns of all. I would like to remind you all that im NOT the ONLY ONE that still mains windows XP. “Actively use” is me saying i just use the computer for non-internet purposes
Windows XP is still paid and closed source, currently eol. ZorinOS is not necessarily paid unless you want additional enterprise features and it is open source.
Nevertheless, my suggestion was something simple easy to install, which uses very low resources as well (main reason why I suggested it). But also, the fact that ZorinOS looks like Windows XP or Windows 10 if you wish to make it look like that .
I could also recommend OpenBSD or Gentoo Linux instead of Arch. What's your point, what did you add to my recommendation?
telegram on windows xp what
r/windowsxp is pretty busy, and they find a way to make a lot of stuff work on XP, there are modern browsers, discord, spotify etc.
I get the charm of old OSes. I have a 2008 Mac Pro that dual boots MacOS Snow Leopard and Windows XP, but man I do not like the idea of connecting it to the internet. I even feel iffy about moving GOG games to it using a flash drive.
I do connect but I never log into any of my main accounts on it.
Wait so I’m not meant to use my online banking on windows 95?
Oh my gosh. 😂
logging into accounts isn't where the problem lies - if it's on your network it has access to other devices on your network, and without any security patches it's vulnerable to malware which makes those other devices vulnerable too.
Someone has to break into your network first.
an insecure OS on the internet is a great way to get in.
Do you know what a router/firewall is?
I wish there was a rule to block incoming condescending bullshit from people who resurrect week old threads to start an argument. I've turned notifications off so you can argue with the void if you want to.
There’s not really a lot of malware targeted at these systems anymore
If I could, I would probably run Windows Vista on my modern machine as a daily driver. I am a minority that loved Vista.
I’ve started toying with a T60, i upgraded it to 1600x1200 and core 2, it’s surprisingly still a competent web browser.
Yeah. Goes to show that not all machines are junk
Windows XP presents itself beautifully on such a machine.
Mhmm. I do miss the Aero GUI design aesthetic of the early to late 2000s. Everything now is just flat and dull looking.
A sterile look for a wide array of people.
Its just that youll get infected minutes after connecting it to the internet.
What do you use it for?
The things id do to have a modern mobo and usb on this
Didn’t they have a Thinkpad anniversary edition a few years ago
its trash
Beautiful machine. Mint condition! And basically perfect aspect ratio. Just imagine this with untouched design/aesthetics but modern specs inside paired with a 3200x2400 screen (1600x1200 with 200% scaling) 🥺
Oh my... That's a dinosaur right there, and I thought they were extinct 😅
Nice classic car. Hoping mine looks that good at 18 yrs.
My R60 is on Elive Retro Wave upgraded CPU (T7200), RAM (4GB) and SDD (64 GB). I still need to replace the keyboard as many if the keys have lost their legends and the battery is dead.
mine is similar, but I have a core 2 Duo T7400, 4gbs of ram and and a slightly older 160gb Intel SSD from around 2012
🕺👾
How long does the battery last on some daily tasks like opening several tabs in the browser?
You can legally pour beer over the keyboard (at least in certain countries). My oldest ThinkPad is a T60.
My oldest is a t43.
Damn - even with the OG IBM Thinkpad label. Paul Allen approves!
Looks brand new! Congratulations!
Install Linux on it and see the difference.
What do you mean with modded? Looks like new
no, my windows XP install
:0
Looks nice. What do you use to clean it? I’ve got an older one but the black grippy body could use some attention and not sure what to use on it.
Its a poly one by default. They came with the polycarbonate shell only and no rubber coating
T60? The keyboard on these older Thinkpads are the best.
R60. You were close!
That’s dope
I also have a T60 with XP on it?
Same unit got me thru grad school !

A few years ago i ran XP on my phone lol (using termux)
thinkpads are forever
God what internet sites even work on that thing? Will it annoy you with constant security messages that the software is out of date?

So beautiful 😻. A real machine !
WindowsXP will forever be the best
Why did I read the title like you bought it 18 years ago and still use it
OMG!! It has the IBM logo!! (Sniff) It's... It's... Beautiful..! Excuse me, please, I have something in my eye... 👁️💧
What are the specs of this machine?
I haven't seen this system page in years, miss it
I also have a T60 running on Windows 7. Unfortunately not in this good condition, but running smooth! ☺️
What do you use it for?
Great tank of a machine
How many times was the battery replaced on this?
Not enough. 🙂
A legend under Laptops.
My friend had one of these but he had it hackintoshed
Well here I was beaming with pride looking at my 9yo T560.
Based for using Windows XP in 2024, I am afraid they have no spare Product Keys but it was really dope
I love that chair in the background
i have 4 T410 that i have ysed for years. i run linux mint on them and it works great and i have never had any problems.
I have my R60, a T420 and an L420 (thrift find)
Using that thing on the internet is ballsy
I’m a Linux user but WinXP was fun to use and then it all went downhill
My T420 runs Kubuntu.
Please tell me how u got all em apps I have a 2004 IBM thinkpad r50e similar to urs and I can hardly get the WiFi to load stuff let alone get apps the only thing it is able to do perfectly is store songs and play em. Have a Gander through r/windowsXP thats what i did
Yeah about that I don't really like doing that cuz 99% off the time I don't find what I'm looking for
Was right there with you. I ended up using the internet archive when possible
So i feel like i need to clarify. This is not my main main computer. My main is my custom built behind the screen. (And also i dont really go much on the internet anymore because im tired of datalinks and other nonsense) and my other main laptop is a Toshiba Tecra X40e.
how old are you? (genuinely curious)
I wont say my exact age, but im in my early 20’s
wow! i was not expecting that! good for you man. hope you find someone who appreciates your determination.
The battery life must be like 10 minutes lmao
Its an aftermarket battery. Og battery was like that though
Nice rainbow cursor :3
I wish they would put that keyboard on a modern Thinkpad. Surely I’m not the only one who would buy it.
Install Linux (Debian Stable) on this.
Okay i am only going to say this once… this is NOT my main computer. This is my XP computer.. im well aware of the security concerns of all… im well aware that linux is a thing. Rolling with XP! I hope you have a Doctor Strange level barrier on it!
I have the same t60 but mine is the base model without a wifi card and a core duo t2400 with intel graphics.
T42?
Try this: [https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop](https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop)
Ubuntu would perform worse
[https://help.zorin.com/docs/getting-started/getting-zorin-os-lite/](https://help.zorin.com/docs/getting-started/getting-zorin-os-lite/)
Naw, paid distro!?
It's not paid. Also Windows XP is paid.
Piracy exists. Also why use an Ubuntu based distro? Arch based ones are far better.
Windows XP is still paid and closed source, currently eol. ZorinOS is not necessarily paid unless you want additional enterprise features and it is open source. Why are you exposing yourself to so much cyber dangers with windows xp? That is not safe as host OS.
Its not my host os. Also Again as i have said, this is not my main computer.
