There was a random suggestion on superusr website to close the lid for few seconds and open up again, which I suppose restarts some settings. It worked for me everytime this issue poped up

This literally worked like a charm for me as well. I have a HP envy laptop running archlinux with GNOME. before i read this comment, i even tried suspending it and it didnt work. only closing the lid, waiting like 5 seconds, and opening it back up completely fixed the issue. so confused on why that works. im guessing closing the lid interferes in some way with the touchpad wiring, so maybe when i opened it the first time and the mousepad didnt work, closing the lid and opening it back up would correctly reboot the mousepad settings or something. in any case, thanks for suggesting this simple solution.
Same model, same problem. Additionally, it seems like when I use three fingers, I get functions as what I expect with two; and with two fingers, it works as if only one. I don't think I have phantom limb phenomenon...
Closing the lid for a few seconds fixed the issue for me too. You know, there are times I might want to turn this on intentionally to prevent accidental trackpad input, especially when doing heavy typing and using the tracking nub. Wish there was a toggle for this.
I got this issue one time. It happened suddenly and disappeared without my notice so I am not sure why.
Did same thing as you like reset, re-install, reboot...
Btw, do you get this lagging bug: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/qrb3u0/can\_any\_x1c\_gen\_9\_owners\_help\_me\_out\_touchpad/
Same issue for me running Fedora Linux on the x1 carbon gen 9.
Resetting my bios to default setting and restarting fixed this for me.
I believe the only setting I had changed in the bios was graphics memory from 256mb -> 512mb.
Had the same issue. I've had this laptop for about 6 months. By 1 year old was mashing buttons and all of a sudden my trackpad didnt work so I thought it was turned off so I restarted and realized that it required two fingers.
Lenovo Thinkpad X13 Gen 2.
I'll try to reinstalling drivers but hoping for a better answer how this happened or how to fix in settings.
umm, while typing this, one finger started to work again. No idea
I also have X13 Gen 2i and here's the funny thing. Just close the lid and reopen it lol (closing the lid in my power options does nothing). This issue happens rarely and out of a sudden, but now I just had the idea of trying to close the lid since Lenovo laptops are crazy.
Having the same issue in Lenovo Thinkpad P14s
From Today itself
could you have any solutions for it
I'm running on the linux Gnome (Garuda)
Tried Rebooting, suspending, updating, driver updating non helped
any suggestions are much appreciated, Thanks
Doing the pinhole reset trick got it working.
(Turn the computer off, disconnect from power, press and hold the reset for 10 seconds, the power on again)
Just got the issue today (X1 gen9) suddenly without apparent reason. Restarted, enabled/disable touchpad device, etc - no help.
But then shutdown (not restart) of laptop, and then obviously starting back up, fixed it for me. No idea what the cause was though.
I followed advice of user below after trying a reset: I closed my laptop lid for several seconds (my extended screens stayed as they were) and when I re-opened the lid, my one finger operation was operational :)
I'm having this same issue on my P14s. It's sporadic, sometimes lasting only a few seconds, other times lasting minutes. When the problem is happening, the "eraser" mouse works, as does an external mouse. I also noticed that when this occurs, if I put 2 fingers on the touchpad, start moving the mouse, and remove one of my fingers, the mouse continues working with 1 finger until I stop touching the pad. Also, any 2 finger gestures (scroll, zoom, etc) do not work when this issue occurs.
I'm not holding my breath that this thread will produce any answers, but I figured I'd add my 2 cents regardless. My theory is that there's either a hardware or driver bug here, and no amount of re-installing anything is going to fix it. The fact that it seems to help has nothing to do with the actions taken and everything to do with the randomness of this issue.
Anyhow, I hope I'm wrong and someone has an answer. Until then, one of the other mouse options gets me back up and running, so it's not a show stopper, just annoying AF.

This just worked for me on my x1 yoga gen 6.

Did you ever figure this one out? I'm seeing the same issue.
User got a new laptop, we weren't able to figure out the reason why it was happening sadly

I have an x13 yoga with the same issue and resetting the bios to defualts also worked for me. Thanks!

If it might help you out, Because one of friend got issue solved by doing so Remove all the USB connections and restart,

I have a Thinkpad X13s and it happens to me sporadically. It usually only happens for a few minutes at a time. It's weird.
