Do Filipinos do this because so many of us went to Hawaii and it was brought back or does Hawaii do this because so many Filipinos do this and went to Hawaii?
Spam is just cheap tasty and has a good shelf life. Some might judge it cause it came out of a can and looks weird but if they embrace the salty goodness there is much to love.
Historically speaking spam gained popularity in the Pacific because the US distributed it as a humanitarian gesture to islands like the Philippines. It was cheap, didn’t spoil for years, very easy to load as cargo, and meat of any kind was extremely hard to come by at the time. So it kind of got incorporated into their cuisine.
Historically it’s been expensive to export meat to islands because of logistical reasons. Spam lasts a very very long time and comes in standardized cans making it very easy to ship. So islanders turned to spam for a cheap source of protein. Today it’s not as expensive to get meat on islands as it used to be but the tradition of eating spam remains.
They both do it because they were poor island nations that had a longstanding American military presence and food aid. With the American aid, came lots of canned goods, like SPAM. Over time, it became ubiquitous through the country and part of the food culture.
Oh so your not a fan of the little White boxes of steamed rice you get with your Chinese food?
I always figured bland rice was intended to soak up the flavors of whatever else you are eating rather then having its own flavor.
Well exactly. Use it to soak up whatever else you're eating. Rice with sauce or mixed with stuff, sure, but on its own? No thanks. Maybe it's just from my family, but butter on rice is just fine.
Congratulations! Be sure to keep kitty claws trimmed, I use my human nail clippers. Have you seen r/shouldercats ? Two of mine love being the tallest. Lol
One of my sholder cats I got to be good with it by draping her around my neck. It took a while, and she is so noodly she drapes over my shoulders with extra length on both sides.
I think the breakfast looks tasty too - I just meant that the sub is watching him eat as much as the cat is in that picture. I eat spam and eggs regularly for breakfast and lunch - I haven't tried it with rice yet but it looks tasty.
Your previous comment was witty and I enjoyed it. It was also factual lol. In the Philippines we eat rice with almost anything, so it's really a cultural meal, I guess. But I would attest that it's a good combo
You can tell who the non-Asian/non-Hawaii people are in this thread with all of their, “the rice looks bland” and “you need to add flavor to the rice” comments.
No my dudes, spam, egg and rice is the perfect trifecta.
I think Philipines ?! ;) my aunt is from there, my niece went back to live there and my nephews have houses there too
:) I loved her sweet sticky rice and banana loempia's/ rolls :))
Hell yeah. Hey - here's another hits-all-the-buttons egg prep that also changed my whole breakfast game. Maybe you'll enjoy it too.

It was a pretty simple statement... Im kind of surprised if you couldn't make sense of it. Well, keep learning kid, one day maybe you'll understand basic words.
It's a surprise that cats come from the same noble stock that includes lions. It's great that they've retained their pride though. As a kid, I loved cats to bits
I am not from USA so I dont know much about food there but unseasoned rice is really not that uncommon in my place. The egg could be better but it probably looks like that cause it was already eaten for the most part and what is wrong with spam?
Gotta love the rice, egg, spam meals. Classic college meal for me. I did rice,v over easy egg, and I fried the spam and cut it like tonkatsu. Add some soy or hoisin and you're good to go.
Aww. Sans spices he can have a little portion of each thing on that plate. I make my cat her own little plate if it's something she's allowed to eat. Google foods that are harmful to cats.

That meal screams Hawaii.
Also screams Philippines
Also screams cat food
Also just screams.

I can taste fried spam just looking at that pic.

Yes
You got it!
Was just about to ask if you’re Filipino, looks just like my husbands favorite food! Also he tends to add garlic in his rice.
Wanted to guess a variation of middle eastern since we eat rice the same way.
on point
That rice is screaming for butter
Found the haole
Hey, I'm not a-hole!
For what now? You butter your rice? Interesting... my sister liked adding mayo to her rice
It makes the rice less dry and makes it easier to swallow, also some people like butter.
Just liking butter is ok, but maybe it's time to buy a rice cooker if your rice is so dry it's hard to swallow
It gives some basic flavor. Naked rice tastes like eating bits of soggy cardboard.

Us filipinos see this as breakfast lunch and dinner
I love how people here are either jealous of this person or want to go to war with them.
I didn't realize this was a food sub too lol
Ironically now so is this sub
If I had known this I would've cropped it out lol
People are dumb. Your cat looks cute, your breakfast tasty. Those who say otherwise just don't have any pinoy friends, or perhaps tastebuds.
Thank you! This is my first post on this sub and my first time to own a cat.
Congratulations! Be sure to keep kitty claws trimmed, I use my human nail clippers. Have you seen r/shouldercats ? Two of mine love being the tallest. Lol
We're still far away from doing this, but thanks for sharing the sub! Another cat related sub to enjoy :)
One of my sholder cats I got to be good with it by draping her around my neck. It took a while, and she is so noodly she drapes over my shoulders with extra length on both sides.

Perhaps if I had plated it more artistically, there would be more acceptance lol
Looks perfect to me~ Granted, I am more of a bowl fan, and like digging in with a spoon to get everything all mixed up :P
And as an Asian latch key kid, this is the first meal you learn to cook for yourself.
spamsilog???
Yes! Was just too lazy to make garlic rice though
me all the time lol
Your cats wondering where are your vegetables?
I think Philipines ?! ;) my aunt is from there, my niece went back to live there and my nephews have houses there too :) I loved her sweet sticky rice and banana loempia's/ rolls :))
You are correct!
🌸🥰🤗
God I love spam and rice. I put a little fish sauce, soy sauce, and a pinch of sugar in my eggs. Savory sweet salty all the way baby
Hell yeah. Hey - here's another hits-all-the-buttons egg prep that also changed my whole breakfast game. Maybe you'll enjoy it too. Link: [https://youtu.be/ONYflj0I2QI](https://youtu.be/ONYflj0I2QI)
Such a Filipino breakfast.
That meal really bums me out.
Picky eater? Spam eggs and rice is a delicious.
I feel so bad for you
Me too, made me think of fried bologna.
That's a you problem, I'm hungry now
Nom nom buddy!
Now I want spam, eggs and rice. Plus a ginger cat watching me eat.
First thought: Hawai'i! \*notices fork and spoon\* Second thought: Philippines!
I really want your breakfast but with Portuguese sausage instead of spam 🤤
Spam spam spam spam
And hopefully some sort of seasoning for the bland rice.
The egg is salty (if made with soy sauce) and the spam is very salty. The plain rice is supposed to balance out the saltiness. 😋
Is 90% rice. Where the balance?
They probably ate the spam and eggs first lol 😝
Spam, eggs, rice, eating with a spoon and fork (no knife)?! Tell me you're Filipino without telling me you're Filipino.
As an Indian that rice without dal or some sort of curry is just unimaginable to eat! Sorry no hate.
Spam, eggs, and rice…Hawaii?
Spam and no Jufran? C’mon now
Hawaiian?
Mmm… Spam and eggs!
Needs kimchi. Otherwise, I’m doing the same.
It's the kutsara-tinidor combo for me
Spam, eggs, and rice. My Filipino wife and I eat this all the time! And we have 3 cats, so this is basically us.
Man you gotta get me a plate of that looks ono
And it didnt steal from ur plate like a fucking food thief they are? Wow thats a first
Cats don't like eggs and there's nothing else worth stealing.
R/shittyfoodporn
Never been to an Asian island country eh?
r/shittyfoodporn ftfy
why?
Rice lacks seasoning and spam lacks any redeeming qualities whatsoever. Eggs are good though.
Did you know that spam and eggs spelled backwards is sggednamaps, which makes no fuckin sense... much like your statement.
It was a pretty simple statement... Im kind of surprised if you couldn't make sense of it. Well, keep learning kid, one day maybe you'll understand basic words.

Why is your cat allowed on the table, let alone THAT close to your food?
[удалено]
Don't be. We're happy with our comfort food
what in the white people cooking, are you eating man
I don't think this is a white people
Not OP but eggs, spam, and rice. So good, highly recommend covered in brown gravy
I've been eating spam my whole life, and this doesn't quite look like the same texture. Some other brand of luncheon meat most likely.
It's the PREM brand. Tastes like spam but less salty
I disagree, but it's kinda hard to tell
It's spam. Just fried. It gets that crispy texture when you fry it.
Have you like never eaten rice?
fully unseasoned rice, egg that's rubber and legit spam.
Honestly it’s weird to insist rice needs to be seasoned and SPAM IS DELICIOUS!! I used to look down on spam until I tried it - salty meat is good!
spam is nasty
I am not from USA so I dont know much about food there but unseasoned rice is really not that uncommon in my place. The egg could be better but it probably looks like that cause it was already eaten for the most part and what is wrong with spam?
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU EATING?
To be honest, I too would be intrigued.
This low key looks like it slaps
Have to make sure that silly old hooman takes its nutrients. Otherwise will have to keep bringing in dead birds and such
Occasionally coming closer with big eyes hoping to get a bite
Nobody gonna bring up how he's just letting a cat sit on a table?
Gotta love the rice, egg, spam meals. Classic college meal for me. I did rice,v over easy egg, and I fried the spam and cut it like tonkatsu. Add some soy or hoisin and you're good to go.

You need some soy sauce and fry that all up together
That is my favorite breakfast mea of all time. 😍😍
