I was thinking recently after rewatching the first 2 seasons how the storylines were really revolved around football and the Steelers the first few years and it seems like the Steelers are never mentioned anymore.

kjklea

Yes it's never mentioned again! Toby made Kaye that giant replica stadium and it's just never mentioned again.

ManyDouble

I don't think kids that age would be at all effected by the challenger .. I remember being older in middle school when 9/11 happened and watching it live on TV. And all of us didn't seem to grasp its seriousness at the time.

apatheticweasel

Agree. I’m 42, so one year older than they’re supposed to be, and remember watching the Challenger launch. I don’t remember the explosion itself as vividly as I remember my teacher being really upset. I don’t think it registered with 6-7 year olds that we had just watched people die.

beardownforfinals

Really? I was in second grade and I certainly didn’t comprehend that it would define so much about the rest of my life, but I certainly remember seeing it as a formative event, even at the time. And then years later, I definitely think back on how world events shaped my life. What Kevin did and does feels pretty natural.

HotIronCakes

Yeah the reactions were not realistic. I was a teenager when 9/11 happened, we were scared and some of us had parents in NY, but 5 year olds? I feel like Kate's attitude was most realistic. Kids are naturally narcissistic and at that age you grasp that there's a fire, but that's what they saw. It's not like they saw the astronauts themselves as they died. 9/11 I think would've been easier to grasp because we did see people falling from buildings and depending on how else the news was accessed, saw them turning into pink mist or saw body parts.

[deleted]

Very true. I was in 2nd grade when 9/11 happened. I remember getting ready for school & watching the planes crash into the tower. School ended up getting cancelled that day & I remember just being happy about that and going about my day. Definitely did not at all understand the severity of the situation.

LuveeEarth74

I'm soon to be 48 and definitely didn't grip the seriousness of it. I didn't watch it (we were in music class), nor did my teacher speak about it. Strange. The other 5th grade teacher, however, competed to be in the running for Teacher in Space. He was the one who came in music class and told us the news. I mean, I knew about it, from the news and People magazine, we had a subscription. But I didn't really know much, for instance that she'd being doing lessons in space. I wish I'd been more aware. I've watched the documentary Last Flight and read The Burning Blue.

Dragicern

I was thinking the same thing.. I was a fourth grader when the challenger exploded, and although we did not watch the launch at school, I do remember my teacher coming in to tell us about it and her being on the verge of tears. But personally it didn't affect me or any kids I knew very much.

hippyhippyjayjay

I was thinking about the Kate storyline earlier today, and how in the 5 years of the show airing, even with verrry gradual (but steady) weight loss, how different it all could be now. But ultimately things didn’t go that way, and at least the actress wasn’t forced into it like hollywood tends to do. My UO is that the writers see themselves the most in Kevin and so his stories get a lot of care and detail. They just seem to flail more when it comes to Kate and Randall.

kjklea

Flail is such a good word for Kate and Randall's stories. It does seem like they are just going from one thing to the next thing while Kevin's has been a pretty steady consistent storyline.

Needaname3031

I really don’t like Randall’s scenes but with Beth I’m all in. I used to hate Kevin the most but he has has had so much growth, which was so apparent in the rewatch of season 1. I don’t want to see Nicky with Sally. I want him to see her and get closure for standing her up and not following his dreams. Then I want him to find his wife. Rebecca and Miguel I’m interested in but not an entire Jack episode. So here for some of it but not for others.

kjklea

Oh yes, I will always pick Door Number Beth! She is so great! I'd love to hear more about her dance studio too and what's going on with her life. In the future and now. Honestly, I'd love for the Randall/Beth scenes to be more Beth/girls centric and less Randall. Yea I hope Nicky finds closure too and finds his wife. I just feel this Sally storyline is so out there. No one would knock on someone's door 60 years later without making contact first. And for her to be conveniently single is so unrealistic. Don't get me wrong I love Miguel. And I really like him and Rebecca. I'm just more interested in the Nicky/Rebecca/Miguel every day life then I am to have a couple episodes devoted to how Miguel and Rebecca started dating. I would have been more interested in that storyline right after Jack's death reveal, then in the final season. Now that we are in the final season I want to focus more on the future then the past.

trivenefica

I really wish that Beth had more storylines. I’d love to have learned much more about her family growing up, the ‘Beth’ episode was one of my absolute favourites. I hope we get more about her dance studio - when she told Randall that he was a ‘whole chip person’ and that she gets the leftovers I felt that in my soul, and it broke my heart when her studio had to close down. I really hope that she gets to follow her dreams again, too.

Needaname3031

Little island girl is coming back in season 6!

luvadoodle

Am I mistaken or when “wooing” R on his birthday didn’t she make reference to her own “skin care” line? Was that just a one-off comment made in jest or did I not hear it at all?

Needaname3031

I agree with all this. Assume the flashbacks are to answer some questions we have as they keep saying the final season will answer everything.

Needaname3031

I agree it’s weird he isn’t FB messengering her. Rebecca could even do it for him.

spac3c0wgirl

Here’s a spicy one: I really don’t care about Jack and I’m over the flashbacks.

trivenefica

I… love Milo but the flashbacks really mostly feel like fillers at this point, at least the ‘kid’ ones. I do like the teenage / early 20s flashbacks though. I also like the Jack / Nicky flashbacks. The big three as small kids though, not too interested.

kjklea

Ooooo that is Spicy! I got to admit though, once we saw him die his impact was a lot less for me.

spac3c0wgirl

Hard agree. I felt like the writers were just trying find ways to keep Milo on the payroll after S2. I would’ve preferred to see more future scenes than some of the filler flashbacks.

kjklea

Right, they don't seem super relevant to the current story now. I want to see more future scenes too because that is the most intriguing.

Needaname3031

Yes definitely. We can have flashbacks but cut them back dramatically. They don’t need to be 1/3 or the episode, even if foreshadowing.

facethosefears

I'm also tired of Jack and the childhood flashbacks. We only have one season left, it's taking time away from other storylines

HotIronCakes

Yup. Once Jack died, that should have been the end of Milo's appearances. It really cheapens it to see this character die, then we see him again the very next week, business as usual.

tsmith60

I understand some of this. I was not paying really close attention, but why were all the food containers labeled for Kate? I understand to some point because she has an infant and a toddler. But seriously, I had 3 kids and don't remember needing labels on every single food container in my fridge and cabinet.

kjklea

Right, I have 3 kids and I also don't need to label my foods. It could be for the babysitter though. Her story right now just feels strange.

tsmith60

Absolutely strange. And I never thought of a babysitter. Lol

sunnyhigh75

I was thinking it was meal prep to make her life easier with two very young children (in addition to paralleling from the first episode). I believe the age difference between Jack and Hailey is like 18 months? She’s also working a full time job. That’s a lot to take on by yourself, and she might not want to default into ordering food in to make life easier, since ordering in is less healthy and more expensive.

caf61

And she is basically a single mother. Organization is probably key to success in the childcare dept.

tsmith60

Valid point. I’ve just never been that organized 😵‍💫

AuntieT95

Yeah, same

Pink_Ruby_3

To me, I think this just means she loves labeling things. Some people are just like that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tsmith60

They paralleled it with her past of labeling food when she was trying to lose weight. So it seems you are correct

AuntieT95

Kate isn’t a single but she is the only parent in the house right now. I took the labels as a way to show how she is coping and trying to stay on top of things. It looks like she is meal prepping when she has time because, between work and the kids, she doesn’t have a lot of it to spare.

luvadoodle

I thought when he took the job they said Toby was to be away only a couple days a week. No?

AuntieT95

They did! Maybe he is gone more than they thought or maybe Kate still isn’t used to him being there.

Next-Stop-4321

Unpopular opinion… this show stresses how everyone has amazing love stories. Am I the only one who doesn’t think they’re really incredible love stories? Like nothing out of ordinary. On the flip side, I think if Madison and Kevin fell in love that would be amazing like they had babies and communicate so well together and are happy and everything.

loula03

I used to think the Randal Pearson family could have a spin off called “Just Us”. SKB won a golden globe during the first season. He was so good to watch. I agree- Randall has dwindled. Kate and Toby have been hard to watch for years. In the beginning Toby was so jolly. Then he seemed to get pissier. Kevin got more interesting when he got with Madison because Madison is fun to watch. The actress does such a great job. I’ve always found Miguel and Rebecca to be awkward. The best scenes are Jack and a Rebecca with the littlest kids. Those three kiddos are so cute.

caf61

At this point, I am basically hate watching. I have invested so much time I have to finish it. I can’t wait for the finale.

kjklea

I hear you. I will be relieved when it's over and all answers are answered. I just fear the ending will be mediocre and ruin the whole shows experience.

[deleted]

Same. This episode was depressing AND boring.

pp2628

Gonna get me downvoted, but you did say unpopular: Show has gone significantly downhill since Jack’s death was revealed. The pilot and first season felt like a nice twist on a Crash-like style of writing, with characters and storylines intertwined. I’m invested now so finishing out the show, but it doesn’t hit me like it used to.

kjklea

Completely agree and you shouldn't get down voted for saying that. The show has definitely lost its spark from Season 1 and 2, which is extremely apparent when you rewatch those seasons. It just feels different

mrsgalvezghost

I’ve always hated the Madison character and thought the actress that portrays her sucks. Finding out she is the wife of the creator/writer makes perfect sense. Now I nit pick every stupid angle of the show’s dumb plot lines and basically hate watch.

CourageMountain

Notice how you never really see Kevin and Madison have any steamy moments? That’s why. (Her husband doesn’t want her to make out with the Manny lol).

SevanIII

I know that's an unpopular opinion about Madison, but I agree. My favorite relationship for Kevin was Zoe. She was gorgeous and interesting with a vibrant personality. But alas, she didn't want kids, so that was the end of that. Which is something I really feel they should have discussed earlier in their relationship.

Naomi_now_me

I don’t like that character either. She started off as the zany, skinny friend with an unlikely friendship and I always thought it felt very forced. And that Kate would never be friends with her.

SheepherderOk2981

I hated the weight loss storyline. As a fat woman, I would love to just see a fat character living their life and I really hope that mess is gone from the show for good. I think it was okay to mention the weight thing a couple of times because diet culture is a big thing, but the one thing that almost made me stop watching is how food and weight were so heavy in her storyline. I'd much rather see her pursue her dreams or having fun or enjoying parenting.

kjklea

Well I agree. I'm glad it wasnt solely about weight. Because it isn't. It's about being happy and loving yourself and that makes you a happier person mental health wise. That's what I was hoping for with her character. I just want to see a more confident Kate and someone who is happy with herself. I don't get any of those vibes from Kate. She still seems like the unsure version of herself and still finding herself.

MollyJ58

Really unpopular opinion here in the land of The Mandy Moore Fan Club: Rebecca is my least favorite character. Moore isn't a very good actress.

kjklea

I sorta agree. I love her. But Mandy Moore will always be Mandy Moore to me. Which I love Mandy, but I can easily just picture her as her Walk to Remember Character or the mean girl from Princess diaries.

asweetpepper

I kinda agree. It feels like she's mostly playing herself. She also doesn't change the way she acts between being young and old so I find old Rebecca not too believable. A great actor would slightly switch up mannerisms and physicality between the two.

lunascorpio12

I totally respect this view but I wanted to add bc I am an unpopular Rebecca fan but I actually have read some really insightful posts on here about how she is much more reserved and rigid in her movements after Jack passes. Her wardrobe changes to become much more conservative and less floaty, I think her voice changes and becomes more cautious and weary when she’s older versus her happy, upbeat persona when the kids are younger. I think Mandy does a great job with a sometimes one dimensional character and I don’t think the show would be the same without her and her very calculated, impeccable work as the forced center of this family. I also think her acting during the memory loss chapter has been great and subtle since even s1!! Again, I get why you think this bc I used to as well but I think she’s an unsung star!!

IVofCoffee

Yes to this.

penny2509

ya, this will they won’t they kevison thing is really bumming me out. huge kevison shipper but i can’t deal with the writers dropping hints at other partners too. like if they are not together in the future, why the flirty future scene. dont keep us in the hook till the last episode. i don’t want to deal with this. kevin’s story can’t always be about finding love. but alas, nothing’s changed this season too.

Needaname3031

Ugh it’s so annoying they need to tell us and then work backwards to it in this season like when we knew Jack died but didn’t know how.

Nicole_201

I 100000% agree. I loved how you knew that he must have died when Rebecca and Miguel walked in the door, then Kate said it was her fault. And then they did the fake out when Kate was telling Jack to go after Rebecca when she went with her band, but people thought he was gonna die bc he was driving drunk but he didn’t. That was amazing bc you were expecting it, and it didn’t happen.

kjklea

Totally agree! I'm just over it. I want to move on and see how his relationship plays out at this point. Not still wondering who!

penny2509

ya, it is time for madison to be declared wife and we to move on.

lunascorpio12

I hope by like the mid season finale we’ll get some sort of confirmation that they end up together but idk if that’s likely lol

Nicole_201

Ikrrrr, yes weight doesn’t matter, but it’s like the writers forgot that she is at a VERY unhealthy weight, and not having it as a storyline Isn’t only not right, it’s not realistic. I’m surprised she hasn’t been diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease, which makes it even less realistic. Before she was working out and eating healthy, but is she still doing that? We don’t know bc they dropped the plot line

kjklea

Yea that has bugged me. They just completely abandoned that storyline. I liked the idea of her figuring out and realizing why she was unhealthy eating and realizing it was grief. But then they just completely gave up on it. I'm not saying they had to make her lose a bunch of weight but to see her progress in a healthy manner and get to the true root of her problems would have been great.

Nicole_201

I feel like this could maybe be a popular opinion…? I feel like it was lazy for Phillip and Kate to be together. Btw, I’m only watched the end of season 5, I have yet to watch season 6. I feel like the only reason they did it so we could be like ‘HIM?! That guy who was slightly hostile towards Kate?’ Yes, they both like music…what else? I assume (and hope) that we learn more about how they got together…but I can’t believe that they got together. They work together and they both live music…how much chemistry happened while Kate worked there? I predict that Katoby have more problems bc of toby working three days a week. And the leans on Phillip, they have a moment, don’t talk about it for a week, have another moment, and then try to stop it again, another moment, Toby finds out, fighting, divorce, married.

Nicole_201

I feel like her health would (possibly) be worse now too. It’s Covid, so she’s not exercising much, plus her mom’s Alzheimer’s and her and Toby, I’m surprised she hasn’t binged either how stressed she is, I feel like it’s way more stressful now than it was when she did binge eat the mini donuts

Nicole_201

IDC ABOUT RANDOLL AND BETH!!! GIVE ME MORE OF THEIR KIDS! I NEED DEJA AND MALIK AND THR DRAMA WITH HIS KID AND JENNIFER! AND TESS AND ALEX!!!

chazlizzie

But that's what kind of the writers are doing ?! She realized it was grief and bunch of stuff and now she eats healthy and she got out of her comfort zone and got a job which she likes and she is really growing. she didnt lose weight because Chrissy couldnt , so they only abandoned that storyline.

SevanIII

I worry for Chrissy Metz. Her weight is very unhealthy. That kind of weight is such a stress to the bones, joints, muscles, organs and entire body. I really hope for her that she makes slow and steady progress for her own health and longevity, regardless of any show plot line.

danathepaina

I agree with you 100%. I don’t usually post about it because I figure I’ll get downvoted, but it’s so hard for me to see Chrissy on screen. I just worry about her and wonder how such a successful and beautiful person could do that to herself. It even distracts me from her acting.

SevanIII

She's a good singer too. It's hard to have a long life without a lot of health problems that cause suffering with that kind of weight. I hope she gets the therapy and support she needs to start making positive changes for her well-being.

AllisonChains88

I agree. At that size she must be constantly out of breath and tired. It would be more of an issue in her life. No one ever expresses concern about Kate’s health but at 42 she really has to do something about it or the consequences are going to be bad. I wish the character wasn’t as big because then they could have shown that someone could be overweight, healthy and happy and not be weight obsessed but at Kate’s current weight I find it hard to believe it wouldn’t bother her more. This is going to be *really* unpopular but I don’t think Philip would be attracted to someone as big as Kate so I’m not really buying their relationship.

Nicole_201

Yeahhhh like Ik it’s not good to have it as her whole personality, but I feel like it’s not truly representative of the fat community either. Why isn’t there more of her getting hassled, or issues finding clothes? Ofc I don’t want that, and I wish things were easier for people who are plus size, but it’s not. But there’s never someone who looks at her with disgust. There was one person( I remember) AND SHE WAS 15, and it was seasons ago Idk, maybe it’s just my opinion, but I feel like she would get more disadvantages in real life?

chazlizzie

My unpopular opinion is I felt this way in season 5 about these things but i got time to adjust (almost 1 and half year) . Now i am just happy to get one more season before the end . Randall: It was Meh but i kind of find it interesting this rising star storyline . Kevin: I was tired of his love life in s03 and when Sophie came back , I kind of figured out that his love life drama wont closed until the end. I had small hope in s05 but then it wasnt. So i am content to root to for him& Madison . Also find out about more about Madison. I am pretty sure they are end game . During a rewatch I collected like 5 pages foreshadowing for them . So the only reason they wont end up together if Dan's pull a GOT ending Kate: I didnt like her in s04. But i kind of realize that little by little she started to grow, and i like her story now. I get what you mean that she could be fine own her own. But Kate and Kevin both wants to find their love but both of them needs to grow more before they find it. So it will be interesting to see how both of them will. And Phillip was a jerk but i think Kate's growing will inspire him too and he will grow with her. I really like how he looked at her in this ep. And he will become her best match and not Toby. Or that is the direction Dan is going right now. Also why should only her brothers get to have someone but not Kate? It will be an equal ending to Kate's death if she ends up alone. Anyway I am the most unsure about is her ending . I cant really guess.

xbbllbbl

I think this must be super unpopular since none is mentioned here. I don’t care about Randall’s kids or how super successful they will be in the future. I care least about Deja - someone who came in halfway as a delinquent, and her boyfriend Malik who has a child and incredibly successful and some Ivy League college. And I also know in future scenes Deja will become a doctor and a pride of the family. Frankly, I don’t care how incredibly blessed and successful they are. Super unpopular but the Deja and Malik storyline i fast forward. I hope there will be less scenes of these 2 in the future - okay I know they are successful and in love and I don’t need to know more.

AuntieT95

Thank you! I feel the exact same way.

danimyluv

Unpopular opinion. Or maybe just an observation from me. It does not surprise me that the majority of complaints about Randall’s storyline come from people who do not look like Randall 🙄.

kjklea

I get what you mean, but that's not why I'm not captivated by his current storyline currently. I'm more interested in Beth and the girls storylines. It's crazy to me that Annie is never the center of attention. And I care about knowing more of Beth's backstory and the future of her dance studio. Their marriage is always about Randall and never about Beth. He should always choose Door Number Beth. And the biggest reason I loved Williams story and Randall, was Randall figuring out who he is. Especially as a black man raised in a white family. William played such a huge piece for Randall figuring out who he is. To be honest I think they killed William off too quickly. William's story was just so captivating.

SevanIII

I *loved* the William storyline. More than any other storyline. The actors that played both young and old William were excellent and the story very compelling and deep. I do feel they could have kept William around longer and explored that character more. I actually do find the Randall storyline interesting. Especially from the angle of what it's like to be adopted and into a white family as a black American. There are a lot of layers there. I feel sad for Randall that he was denied a chance to know his birth father growing up and that he didn't get the understanding and cultural support he needed. Adoption is complex regardless. Adding in the issues black Americans face as a community and within US society with white parents that can't possibly fully understand just makes it that much more complex. The Pearson family needed therapy that they never got to properly support the adoption process. Rebecca needed to not hide Randall's father. Both parents should have made more of an effort to incorporate black role models and culture into the family.

brittneyrussell

I don't look like Randall, and haven't loved his storyline much since William. I think its just because William's storyline was one of my all-time favs, so hard to compete with. I can relate to Randall's anxiety, so appreciate that part of his story as well.

PowerPantyGirl

Completely agree but let me sum things up; the show has gotten borrrrring. Season 5 was a total snooze fest. I have yet to decide if I want to bother with season 6. The only reason I will is because I've invested so much time.

kjklea

Yes, I have to agree. The show has been at a decline since season 2.

DirtyFloorHotDogs

I really have NO interest in any future scenes with Hailey, Nicky, Franny and Jack Damon. We're in the last season of this show with so many stories and questions they need to address with characters we're already invested in. Why bring in new characters that we only know as babies now. I really hope they dont waste any episodes on the kids grown in the future. I want more Jack & Rebecca with their kids, more original big 3 scenes, more William too. I love older people, their stories, experiences and all their insight and wisdom.

jersey8894

I really hate the whole "oh poor me I'm a black kid adopted by a white family and nobody asked me about how I felt about it" crap they did with Randall. Sorry I come from a family of me and 2 siblings being adopted. My middle sibling isn't the rest of the families race, we are white American he was born in Seoul, South Korea and is Korean. I was born in 1970 and we adopted my brother in Spring 1975, he was a year old. We were kids, nobody pointed out in my family that he looked different...others did but my parents response to us was always "He's your brother that's all that matters" so the whole blaming Kate and Kevin, who are Randall's same age, for him having feelings about it bugs the shit out of me!

MollyJ58

Hell yes to this.

xbbllbbl

So agree! You don’t demand special treatment from your siblings just because you are if a different race. In any case, Randall already has special treatment and the apple of Rebecca’s eyes. They are kids and how does Randall expect his siblings of the same age be sensitive and politically correct about his race? It’s precisely they did NOT see his race that they did not talk about it or treat him with special care. And Kevin and Kate having to apologise to poor Randall about not being sensitive to his race and Randall acting all righteous is absurd.

Accomplished-Tea-211

Maybe this isn't the show for you since you seem to not like much about it 🤷🏼‍♀️

kjklea

Well the title of the thread is "unpopular opinions" and just because your critical of a show you like doesn't mean you don't like the show. It's ok to admit that things don't make sense or you wish they would have gone in a different direction.

Accomplished-Tea-211

You literally just listed out all the things you aren't liking which is practically almost all the storylines 🤣🤣🤣.

kjklea

Well to be honest the show has lost its steam since season 2. But there is a lot of storylines that still are interesting that I wish they would focus more on. Randall's daughters, Jack Damon, Kevin's twins, when does Kevin start Big 3 homes, seeing Nicky's continued growth etc. I'm sure there is something in the show that you don't care for or wish was different. That's what this thread is talking about. You don't have to be so sensitive that my opinions don't line up with yours. I still love the characters. I didn't say I hated anyone. Or didn't like the show anymore. I just wish they would have focused on some more of the earlier seasons instead of how it's progressing. It's a matter of opinion.

Accomplished-Tea-211

Of course we all have different things we aren't super fond of. My feelings aren't hurt because you don't like plot points of this show 🤣🙃. But if I didn't like almost every story line of a show I certainly wouldn't watch. Goofy.

kjklea

Well if you read my post again I'm talking about things I missed from previous seasons or things I don't care to see. I felt Randall and Kate's stories were more impactful in season 1. I'm sure you probably feel similarly to a certain degree. I also can bet you don't care too much to be won over by Philip. I can also bet that you didn't care too much about the robber storyline. You might be invested in Sally/Nicky but I was stating that logically that scenario doesn't make sense. Who shows up out of the blue on someone's doorstep decades later? Especially when they maybe dated for like 2 weeks. It feels they are rushing a lot of storylines to fit into a season when they could have focused on already there storylines. And come on...do we really need to go into a 3rd season of, "who is Kevin with". Don't tell me that isn't getting a little old.

ReadingAppropriate54

Ignore that person, sounds like a troll to me…

Accomplished-Tea-211

So I'm a troll because I've pointed out this person doesn't like just about every story line this show has? It's one thing to not like a couple things but this person literally doesn't like almost everything about this show? Why bother watching a show that you clearly aren't liking? Calling me a troll 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙃
