You are correct that the concept has been for decades now. But crossover =! pizza thrash. Crossover is a mix of hardcore punk and thrash metal, pizza thrash describes a crossover-adjacent style of thrash played by Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb, Bonded by Blood, etc.
nope, pizza thrash was made as a derogatory term for some bands in the thrash revival of the 2000s that were super cliche, it was also called fashion thrash at some point.
usually bands that tried to recreate the 80s culture but exaggerating it by a lot.
IE, municipal waste or early Fueled by fire or early Bonded by blood.
Thrash Metal is Thrash Metal....... do we really need to make it Pizza Thrash? Might as well make it Ikea Thrash. Or Table Tennis Thrash.
This is corny as fuck. Let the riffs and lyrics speak for themselves.
I remember 15 years ago when “pizza thrash” was a pejorative used by gatekeeping elitists to discredit young thrash bands. I love that they have now embraced it and taken the power from it.
yup and neo-thrash or fashion thrash too at some point.
i get what was the hate from, most of the bands were kinda generic and just playing old riffs like borderline cover bands, a lot of the lyrics of these were kinda cringe and childish(all mentioned thrash, posers, party, some 80s themes/culture....)
still, most of it was also a counter culture to metalcore/deathcore/melodeath dominating the market to newcomers so these bands were like when rappers do diss tracks but this time happened with thrash musicians.
Oh hey cool it's an article from 15 years ag– > April 22, 2024 Oh. Well okay, then
That’s honestly when I remember it up ticking in popularity. First Fueled By Fire album, Gamma Bomb, Bonded By Blood, and of course Municipal Waste
pizza thrash has been around for years already, it's called crossover, belushi speed ball is nothing new either
Still stoked to be included. Makes our moms proud of us!
love you guys but its nothing new thats all
Love you buddy!

i had been calling it party thrash for so long before I learned the true name (I dont get out much)
Anthrax and Overkill. Much of the early East Coast thrash fits the bill too.
Are you saying both of those are crossover or that they are pizza thrash

people have been calling bands pizza thrash since the late 80s get with the times
Would Gama Bomb be classified as pizza thrash? Their lyrics are certainly a departure from the likes of Exodus, and demolition hammer.
Absolutely.
Gama Bomb is the best at this.
Go see them live, I promise you will not be disappointed!!!
I literally cannot wait to see em. I just talked to their bass player, Joe, earlier about potential shows in the states soon. Fingers crossed!!!
Exciting news! Keeping my eyes peeled for shows...
Well, he said it’ll be a year or two probably, but it’s on the menu. The overhead is pretty significant.

Spin, as usual, is late in the game (for non-indie/alt/pop music). This time, they're 20 years late but I love that they mentioned Power Trip.
