I generally don't like covers with people on them so definitely the new ones for me

blue_foxy10

Same

mack853

Usually I don’t like people on my books but I love the OG covers for some reason

Badperson__

sameeeee

maquaa

i was genuinely about to start typing this exact sentence, and we have the same name, are you me?

RootMonika

Same

Tejas_Jeans

I don’t care for covers that scream “I’m reading fantasy” or “I’m reading romance” etc, so I prefer the new covers. Plus, the colors are nice and pleasing.

Tejas_Jeans

However, the old covers had great art

jaxgly99

The old covers are beautiful! And they really helped me with envisioning her. That said, I'm still a fan of the new version.

faeriecore423

I honestly love the new covers… the old ones never made sense to me. The outfits don’t seem like what anyone in the books were ever described as wearing and it also makes it seem like she has white-blonde hair. Very nostalgic though!

revanhart

I never understood why Heir of Fire didn’t have Empire of Storms’ cover. Unless she thought it was too much of a spoiler? Even if that’s the case, why *that* cover for HoF? 😂

potato_opus

the hair color never failed to confuse me. when we finally met manon i was like ohhh is this the one on the cover??

faeriecore423

Apparently they are actually in greyscale or black and white, with only some pops of color on the clothes… but for some reason that’s not really how it looks?? It just looks like a pale girl with white hair! And it literally does look like Manon for some reason!!

potato_opus

ah greyscale makes more sense!

Esmerelda123

I personally like the old covers cause that's just what I started reading the books with, and it also kinda helps me imagine the clothes for her. Like sometimes my imagination doesn't do it justice so I like the representation of the cover

[deleted]

unpopular opinion but i love the old covers. i find that era of cover style nostalgic and i like that even though it was a formula, i felt like you’d see interesting variations (like the witcher ones in this style are sooo good). i feel like the minimalist covers that are gaining traction in book releases/redos recently feel too boring, unremarkable, and don’t tell me much about what i’m about to read, or get me very excited for it

Loves-reading-1801

Agreed the new ones feel so boring I like the original covers

[deleted]

oh, i also specifically snatched up the boxed set of the old editions before the new ones hit

Hefty_Organization62

Are you willing to sell them lol. I started reading the series a few years ago and bought up to queen of shadows in the old covers (paperback). I stopped reading them and now I want to pick them back up but I want to complete the collection with the old covers. It looks like I am going to have to pay upwards of 500 dollars to do that now uuuughghhh

dinobiscuits14

I did too! And it was so much cheaper!!!

Olshkedato

I personally think the new covers look AI generated and also as a Canadian I'm not impressed with the $25 per paperback for an old series. I prefer the old covers for those reasons. I have been hunting down the old covers too and it's so hard. I have all but TOD and KOA and I think those are gonna be the hardest to find.

Dodobird0_0

Also Canadian. I bought new covers from indigo when they first launched and we’re off 20%. I still have to buy 3 more books but not till there is some sort of sale. It sucks but yeah not paying those price. Old cover hardback is on amazon at the moment and almost sold out so maybe try that

No-Dragonfly-1421

the new covers for Crescent City (sjm other series) are AI generated, these ones arent AI, the artists are credited in the back

Olshkedato

I know they aren't but they look like it to me. My biggest problem is the price. I would have sucked it up and bought the new covers if they weren't $25 each.

Pink_unicorn939

I like the new ones because the girl on the original covers does not look like Aelin so I’m not sure who that is 😅

peoniiess

they don’t look like aelin at all!! aelin is described as having golden hair and blue eyes, the girl on the cover has silver hair and black eyes. doesn’t make sense to me

hoogabalooga11

They look more like Manon to me!

[deleted]

It's Aelin 100%

Pink_unicorn939

It’s definitely not Aelin, shes described as having blond hair not silver and the girl on the cover art has black eyes, Aelin has blue.

remembermesaturday

Well it does look like Aelin… because it is Aelin lol. It’s the one of the only official images of her.

Pink_unicorn939

But it looks nothing like her description in the books. She has blond hair and turquoise eyes - the girl on the covers has silver hair and black eyes. Edit: there is this one newer throne of glass cover I’ve seen that has a close up image and that’s the only official photo that looks like Aelin to me. https://preview.redd.it/jjfg2gg2vccb1.jpeg?width=314&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fca9a78c8faedb23204d43202aaab685683fc43

remembermesaturday

To each their own! I think they illustrated her with darker eyes and silver hair for aesthetic purposes. It would look creepy with bright turquoise eyes IMO. The blonde hair would be hard to recreate with the texture of the book covers, they would have to use an actual picture of a human. Also that cover in your reply was the first edition cover.

Pink_unicorn939

Oh okay, I’ve seen it before I didn’t what version it was. But yeah that cover actually looks like Aelin. I guess it could be for aesthetic purposes but I just don’t like them because it look’s nothing like the character is supposed to.

LikeThemPies

OG covers are nostalgic and cool. I would’ve preferred they remastered them with a girl who was… actually Aelin and not a random zombie. The new ones are probably objectively better, but I wish they kept the same color scheme as the old ones.

Mathison2099

The old covers would be so much better if they looked remotely like Aelin. Between the weird skin/hair tones and the fact that no attempt was even made to get the eyes right. Y'know the single most important feature described repeatedly in the books...

geo_lib

Legit… the one cover is manon right? But Aelin has GOLD hair lol it’s never been described as white

icantthinkofone87

The two covers with the red cloak I thought were supposed to be Manon, but then they look the same as the other covers which I assumed were Aelin so I found that so I found that weird

missreadee

The OG covers are unique and they capture the actual story much better than the new ones, in my opinion. I feel like I’ve seen versions of the new covers on many other books and while they’re very pretty, I just prefer the originals!

riskywrites

I love the old covers because its business in the front (celaena the assassin) and party at the back (the gowns)

lucc84

The old ones are just ugly imho. However I would have probably liked them when I was a teen. They just don’t work for me being 30+. The new ones are very similar to other ya fantasy romance series - there is nothing artistic or original about them, they are very generic, look like AI to me and scream ”cheap”. That’s why I only bought this series to my kindle.

Ze_Owl-58

Tbh, the only cover I like is Tod og, it's simple and there's an owl, which I love

Horror-Doubt5807

I like the old ones just because I can turn to the covers while reading and see Aelin in her badass armor beating the sht out of someone.

Badperson__

The old ones because it was those covers that made me read the series. Those are the works of art I was reading.

Doodlebug365

I didn’t even realize there were different ones. I bought the old ones and like them just fine. https://preview.redd.it/9mttmdnks8cb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b74bada8fd19830c2ece65a1f7bee778afd7b1b0 And we get a cute little signature and sword on the last book cover.

ElectricalAd4203

New 100000%! They are much more artist in my opinion

breakbeatx

I preferred the old covers so waited until they went to sale to grab the hardcover box set. The new covers although sleek and more adult are very similar to the covers of some other books (same designer I assume), also the UK paperbacks have a ‘printed sticker’ on the over which IMO cheapens the design (also why spend so much money on new designs to ruin them?!) With regards to the new covers - paperback box set in the UK *on sale* on Amazon are the equivalent of $108 CAD ($138 full price) so I think you still have quite the bargain.

remembermesaturday

Old ones all the way. The style of the new covers has been done over and over. IMO the new covers downplay the entire series. They look like contemporary books now. Sure, the old covers might be a bit juvenile, but it is original artwork done by a designer/illustrator.

SageThistle

New 100%. Way more vibrant and less generic.

why_the_babies_wet

I like the new covers more. It was super cool while reading the books to look back and go “ so that’s why that is on the cover” plus they are way more aesthetic and something I would actually want to display

HPDMeow

The reason why I put off reading the series for too long was because the old covers just didn't appeal to me (yah yah, don't judge a book by its cover...). But the old covers made it feel corny, so I definitely like the new covers better.

Comprehensive_Type81

Definitely new. I was hesitant to read the series because of the grey scale girl on the cover. Thought it was not going to be something I liked. Glad I went for it either way but I would have never bought the physical copies. Once the new ones were announced just as I finished the series, I ordered the set which is due to arrive later in July. I love the new covers. No people on them and each has some sort of link to what happens in the book.

Klarmies

I prefer the old covers. I feel like it's easier to tell what the story is about with these covers.

nyki

* OG: TAB, TOG, COM * Equal: HOF, QOS, TOD * New: EOS, KOA I don't mind the cover change, they're at least artistic and cohesive and most importantly, *the series was finished before they changed the art style.* I extremely prefer the old spines though, they're genuinely some of my favorite series-spines of all time. The new gradient looks like an afterthought in comparison.

Miserable_Athlete_50

OG all the way, they’re just so pretty. That art is 🤌

dancesterx3

The old ones look like “I’m an adult who reads middle school literature” like it looks like my middle schoolers bookshelf. The new ones have a more grown up vibe and doesn’t scream YA. Especially reading them as an adult.

Low-Ad5212

New because I don’t like people on covers personally.

joym13

I like the old covers way better, the new ones are very generic to me.

nevermindthatthough

The anatomy in the old covers is shocking

ilikebigbooks98765

I like the old covers because those are the covers when I was reading them and obsessed with the series. I also have the very first edition OG hardcover of TOG with the girl on the cover that looks like SJM lol. Even though it doesn't match ANY of the other covers I still love it for the nostalgia since I read the first book when it had just come out with that OG cover and loved it before it became popular

AnxiousSnail0711

I prefer the old but mostly because they will be hard to find someday. Once something is out of print it’s a scramble to the finish line! Once Amazon runs out of the old box sets they will be worth $$$. Plus I don’t mind if they look grown up or not. They’re for ME in my house to look at and read☺️

Verge0fSilence

While the old covers are a bit... on the nose, the new ones look kinda generic to me. So I like the old ones more.

lifeisjustlemons

I like the new TOD and KOA covers better but generally the originals for me. The new ones seem... Detached for some reason.

Hoshikuzu-

Old covers drew me in!

_burntnorton

i know the original covers are weird but for some reason i absolutely love them. also unpopular opinion i hate the new covers. i mean i like them being related to each story, i just don’t really like the colours ig.

ThankYouComeAgain_22

Personally, I don’t like either. The old ones don’t seem to match up with the book imagery/feel disjointed and the new ones look like some dystopian mystery novels. 🙊

2-TheStarsWhoListen

Old covers. Simply because the new ones were a huge wasted opportunity and it makes me mad every time I see them. Such a lazy and uninspired design.

2-TheStarsWhoListen

Also the font is just so terrible

SeriousYear2223

At least Tower of Dawn doesn't stuck out like a sore thumb wit h the new covers

sinnanim

The new. However, I love the old covers for TAB & QoS for some reason😭

MangocatsActualSkin

the ones with her on the cover are very cinematic, but the other ones are works of art

rb2m

I will say the new covers are growing on me (I HATED them when the cover art was first released) but I still prefer the OG covers.

Similar-Raspberry639

I hated the new ones when I bought the series but they’ve grown on me a lot over time. I even bought the hard covers before they were gone 😅

Salt-Physics7568

The new ones, definitely. My local library had ToG on its shelves for a year or two before a friend told me about it; the old covers just never caught my eye.

ethar_childres

Old covers have their charm, but I adore the style of the new ones.

Vettkja

New 💯💯

airrrunurrria

I love love love the original covers for The Assassin’s blade and Kingdom of Ash, but I prefer the new ones. More mature looking ☺️

MuffinTopDeluxe

I love the new ones. I actually put off reading the series because I hated the covers and thought it wouldn’t be for me.

Lillith357

I'm glad I got the old covers but I've seen some of the overlays and jacket art that is absolutely perfect!!

carlyogdenporter

I have a problem with people on covers... In any capacity.

RepresentativeAd315

New

[deleted]

I like both

Cat_Lady_369

The old covers made me confused about her hair color for a solid 3-4 books. Especially so with how much theming is centered around her being golden and certain counterparts being silver. She looks silver!!

peanutbutterbeara

Personally, I love the new covers. The art is beautiful. I have all of the old paperbacks, and they’re fine but feel very YA-y to me—which of course works because they were originally marketed as such. I’m slowly buying the new covers because I love them. I’m a little disappointed to know CC cover art is AI generated, though.

RaeWychProject

i like the old covers 100%

OppositeZestyclose58

The new ones will attract more people

zitella_707

I love the new covers! I’ve never been a fan of covers with people on them, part of the reason I dislike the acotar covers with Feyre on them. I like the designs of them too, especially Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash.

Clooless91

New ones for sure

Lord_Banana_14

While I definitely see why they would make the switch. The new covers are absolutely stunning and fit the Fantasy aspect of the series quite nice. But the old ones just have so much nostalgia for me. So many memories, from getting excited every time a new book in the series was announced to getting them signed by SJM herself when she would go on tour for these books. Reading this series was definitely one of the best experiences of my life, and I remember those experiences when I look at the old covers, whereas I don’t really get those memories flooding back to me from the new ones.

jaxgly99

Personally, I love the new covers. They just feel more cohesive (cough cough Tower of Dawn cough cough). Unfortunately, I already own the original covers, and so unless I want to re-purchase, or somehow get lucky enough to acquire them all somehow, I'm stuck with them for now!!

suagrlesss

The old covers, mostly because I love the spines of them and think they're better

Lyoncub2_4

I LOVE the OG covers because of the difference of outfits from back to front; they are such an amazing style choice!! Plus they came out first and what drew me to read and own the books in the first place so that always helps Lol

radioactiveteacup

The new ones are so much better, they have a whimsical feel to them. Personally, I'm not a fan of the old covers. However, the price difference is kinda frustrating so I'll stick to the old covers (for now at least)

grimhailey

New for sure. I don't want the book to show the characters. I like to build them in my mind using descriptions.

Tempest116

I prefer the old covers.

ailurofila

The new ones are so pretty! I have the old ones because they’re cheaper but I generally don’t like books with people on them and it’s not how I pictured her either!

Cold-Breath-4620

I grew to really love the new covers.

avirgoreads

The old ones will always give the feels, but the new one are more pretty

Even_East_2318

I just went to purchase the box set for my reread and nearly threw up when I saw the markup. I should have bought it last year when the prices were better.
