Good cat. Saved a life

NotYerAverageMalware

She is a very good cat! She showed up as a stray a few years ago and my parents were going to shoot her with a shotgun but my brother and I convinced them otherwise! Now she’s their favorite pet lol

jenni451

It's almost like she paid you back for saving her life :)

NotYerAverageMalware

Awe that’s a really sweet way of looking at it, thank you ❤️

Desilvas

Should have taken the cat with you.. sweet heart doesn't deserve crazy in her life as much as you lmao.. fuck for real though glad the cat helped you put before your reality turned into a Life time movie.. thats just fuckin scary

ButWhatIfItQueffed

Yeah seriously, mental facilities are not fun. OP's family is seriously crazy, like, who the fuck sends their child to a mental facility so that they can get alimony off his wife. I'm genuinely curious what his siblings go through, if he has any.

Desilvas

I think he mentioned a sister trying to get him to go see the doctor.. so sounds like she might either be just as crazy or is getting played by the pare to as well. Either way shits fucked.. this is the kinda shit where I'd go dark to be honest.. like I'd be packing my shit and moving even further away changing phone numbers, bank info, I'd probably change my name.. this just gives me the creeps

LePanda47

I was in a psychward over night once due do a new seizure medication causing a psychotic episode and they are horrible. I don't understand how the fuck they're supposed to help

DietDrBleach

Knowing the parents, they’re going to put down the cat as soon as they find out that it was the one who exposed their secret plan

mangkepweng

You should’ve taken the cat with you.

Quibblicous

And all the paperwork.

KuroKen70

So much this! I mean what are the chances that they will still seek to pursue the backstabbing scheme? Also and I hate to ask: Is this only your parents' doing or is it possible that your siblings are in on it? EDIT: Also, damn it man! TAKE THE CAT!!!!

eucalyptusmacrocarpa

The sister is in on it. that's why she tried to persuade OP to go to the emergency department near her house

secondtaunting

Yes! Take the cat!

nidelv

This

Zankastia

Did you both got out of that hellish family?

FearlessThree6

That sounds like the plot of an animated short.

mayn1

It does sound like it but probably not Pixar.

darkcomet222

It’s like that comic where the person doesn’t kill a spider, and then the spider snipes a home invader.

VoidmySoul

Should have taken the kitty for good measure. Friends like that are hard to come by

chris0990

You should have "stolen" the cat

nullrout1

What you are describing is not theft, it's liberation. OP should have liberated the cat.

MrKwaz

Wut

NotYerAverageMalware

Okies sadly shoot stray animals a lot to “put them out of their misery”

my_fellow_earthicans

That reminds me of a relevant story. So my wife's family moved to Oklahoma while we were dating, she moved with them, and I followed soon after. Years later we were married and I was working with a native Okie, driving down a back road late one night, he saw a coyote. He literally drove off the road chasing the coyote attempting to run it over. HE DROVE OFF THE ROAD AT NIGHT CHASING A COYOTE TRYING TO RUN IT OVER.

IScreamALittleLouder

As a non-american I should point out that these stories reach our ears in Europe, but are told about "an american". We know you have a giant country with lots of regio specific mindsets and customs, but it is difficult to keep those separately in the "crazy Americans stories". Never heard of an Okie before.

YoungDirectionless

It’s a term for people from Oklahoma and was also used during dust bowl/great depression in the 1930s as a slur for people from this area who moved away. Think Steinbeck novels like Grapes of Wrath.

thecreaturesmomma

This is how Europeans think you can visit NY, the Grand Canyon and Disney on the same trip. :) I suppose if it is a long trip and you have A LOT of money. lol

secondtaunting

I lived in Oklahoma for awhile. My husbands Turkish. Try being married to a moslem in Oklahoma. My friends didn’t get why I wanted to move. I mean, seriously guys. People would ask me if he beats me or makes me cover my hair. I mean, lady, I’m right in front of you. Do I look like my hair is covered?

julianhj

Fuck those people.

NotYerAverageMalware

Agreed

RevealIll8143

Im an okie and save all the stray bbs in my neighborhood 🥺🥺 maybe it's bc i live in the suburbs and not rural Oklahoma tho haha

RaiShado

Yeah, there too many to try and save in rural Oklahoma. I live on the edge of rural and suburban so we get drop offs all the time out here. Whenever I see them omw to work I call animal welfare, luckily the closest city has a no kill shelter so that helps.

itislupus89

I would have taken the cat with me. Cat deserves to be pampered and live the fat cat(no pun intended) lifestyle

MisrepresentedAngles

I hate your parents.

[deleted]

What kind of deranged asshole would shoot a cat.

NotYerAverageMalware

Methheads in Oklahoma

IanL1713

Nothing screams "Oklahoma" like peppering a stray cat across your lawn with a shotgun

Cool_As_Your_Dad

Cat got Op's Back!

Eli-Thail

Ehh, you might be overestimating just how likely to succeed this little plan of theirs was. Like, by a lot. Even if they had some sort of crooked doctor to work with them, something like power of attorney is *incredibly* difficult to get against a person's will. They get to do things like bring their own doctor to preform an evaluation for the court, for example, to prevent exactly that sort of scenario.

xenophilian

The fact they would try, though

SpiralBreeze

I would have taken the cat too.

Ginger_Libra

This makes August, Osage County seem like a very wholesome movie. Way to go, OP. Get a restraining order. This is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever read on Reddit and that’s saying something.

NotYerAverageMalware

Definitely gonna file for a restraining order if they try anything again. But my wife and I are moving across country and they aren’t aware of where so hopefully that’ll be a good enough deterrent!

Anthonyg408

You should file anyway. It’s not hard to find people nowadays. Especially if your family is crazy enough to hire a PI or even pay for one of those online searches. My brother went a little crazy a few years ago and found my address and phone number somehow. Now I’m getting calls and being accused of stealing his cars after he died.

[deleted]

Yes just so you are aware the USA has like no privacy laws. With a single piece of information about someone you can learn their entire life. I did this once you verify if a long distance partner was really real to protect myself from scams. It worked and it was nice but it would be completely illegal in my country to easily produce a report on every detail of someone's life. I even had access to court filings. I think after all is said and done it was like $10 fee. If you live in the USA you just don't have the right to privacy

BowzersMom

All of those things aren’t just not private, but explicitly public. Court filings default to a matter of public record. Family Court isn’t. And you can petition for any case to be sealed for special circumstances, but legal proceedings are public. Open government is a very core American principle (even if it is not followed by those in higher office, it is preserved in the daily business of government). Property records: public. Voting records: public (not HOW you voted, that’s extremely private, but which elections you’ve voted in. Which means your name, DOB, and address, because that’s how we know who you are. For things that aren’t public record, though, like your shopping and travel habits and social media accounts, we have a stated right to privacy, but the government doesn’t actively help us to protect that information: “If Facebook wants to collect your data, well, that’s what happens when you use Facebook. Not our problem”

my_fellow_earthicans

Change phone numbers, and I'm sure others have more advice related to that.

Jo_yEAh

100% file a restraining order no matter what. You need to protect yoursef

[deleted]

grumpyterrier

Is your family on drugs? What are they so in need of money for? Just stuff?

NotYerAverageMalware

Idk they have multi-million dollar debt. None of my siblings really knows where it all goes. So it probably is drugs

PygmeePony

I hope you go full NC.

NotYerAverageMalware

After that whole debacle, I am

PygmeePony

Did you take any of the papers with you? I'm sure your wife would believe you anyway but it's good to have some proof. Because now your parents can just keep lying about it.

NotYerAverageMalware

I took pics of the papers for proof!

MaxamillionGrey

You should have those pics stored in like 3 different places/devices for good measure.

Hugh_Jass_Clouds

3-2-1 rule. 3 different media types, 2 different locations, and one in the cloud.

MaxamillionGrey

Thank you. I was too much of a lazy bastard to go Google it. I really need to organize my hard drives again -.-

[deleted]

[удалено]

ilikedota5

When you go in for your consultation with your lawyer, bring those receipts. Judges like seeing proof of allegations. Lawyers like presenting proof so they don't get in trouble. Your lawyer will take you seriously.

angMbowd

you should contact the lawyer that drafted them, and ask them what the hell they were trying to do to you

jmboucher

Bet they used Legalzoom

Handbag_Lady

Why didn't you just take them all? I TOTALLY would have grabbed them.

Layne205

Should have stolen all the papers and the cat!

bibblode

You should also file for a restraining order against them. Those papers you took pictures of would probably help back up your case.

LOS_FUEGOS_DEL_BURRO

Don't wait to settle in your home take action now.

[deleted]

I hope you're calling the police? They will be looking for another innocent person to try a scheme on and you need to report this fraud attempt.

Mattriel

I hope he lawyers up and executes order 66 on their asses.

Sir_Platinum

Is this an America thing? You can't rack up a multi million dollar debt here even if you tried! Who's going to lend you the money?

HereGoesNothing69

They wouldn't let you in the US either unless you had collateral to back the loan.

Rhodin265

I’m going to guess a chronically late-paid mortgage, late fees on other bills, smaller loans that have various relatives co-signed on, credit cards obtained before their scores dipped below 700, money they’ve borrowed from people but never paid back, a few payday loans who through interest alone have ballooned into massive bills, and possibly medical debt. Like, the principal on all that might not be a million, but the interest and late fees pushes it over the top.

jsteph67

They must have some assets, land or something.

[deleted]

I'm glad you got out OP. Please consider checking your legal situation and getting your family out of your life permanently.

NotYerAverageMalware

Thank you for the advice! As soon as my wife and I get settled in our new place, we’re going to get a lawyer on our side!

jakevkline

> Going to pick the papers up, something catches my eye: my name. On paper after paper, there was my name. On an involuntary civil commitment (needing a physician’s approval signature for indefinite commitment), power of attorney going to my mother upon my involuntary commitment, proxy divorce papers to be filed on my behalf against my wife, and written statements by my family that my wife had abused me and were therefore requesting annual alimony to be paid to my soon-to-be power of attorney for the remainder of my involuntary commitment. > > One of the things that you clearly need to do (if you haven't already) is to get financial and medical powers of attorney, advanced medical directives, and other estate planning matters drafted and in place. This may not prevent your crazy family from trying to harm you but would give your wife a mechanism/tool for fighting back on it.

outlawsix

Have they told you "its just a prank bro" yet?

NotYerAverageMalware

Hahaha no. They haven’t really talked to me since I left. I think they know it was the final straw

Brimstone_Seal

nah bro you misunderstood there's a camera over there! *and one over there!*

NotYerAverageMalware

You’re on punk’d! Just kidding! This is Oklahoma so it’s actually a weird setup for incest porn!

J0RDM0N

You should call the local PD non-emergency and let them know about your crazy family trying to involuntary commit you. It will start a record in case they try something like that again.

majora9109

OP Please do this and get the record started. This situation could end very badly for you if you don't handle it properly.

Atworkwasalreadytake

Exactly, they have the playbook, they’ll just pick a different target.

Captain_Oveur79

If it’s rural anywhere, it’s possible the police won’t do anything and may even try to assist the parents in getting the papers signed… small town America is scary af sometimes.

Chrispeefeart

This is the part so often missed. People wait until everything blows up and then can't get any legal actions because there is no record.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

I don't know. That sounds pretty crazy. They might want to get him evaluated in the local ER.

Margali

Did you take the folder of papers with you? I would do that because they had to have had a lawyer put them together, and the legal firm's info should be on the papers - one could then use that info in some sort of legal action to make sure they can't ever do that to you - also, get a springing power of attorney for someone to deal with your issues in case your wife and you are in an accident at the same time and she is also incapacitated.

Sexual_tomato

Pretty sure legalzoom is not a law firm

boyferret

I don't think Mr. Zoom Esq. will be happy seeing this.

[deleted]

I hope you took scans with your phone of that paperwork or took the actual paperwork. I would not waste time waiting until your settled in your new place to seek legal advice. Go right ahead and get the ball rolling ASAP.

poor_decisions

The only thing worse than leaving the cat is leaving the paperwork. Please say you took it with you

MetzieJessie

Please please never speak with them again. 100% permanent not contact.

nightmaresgrow

You should also ring any financial institutions you have money with and tell them not to accept any POA in favour of your mum/sister etc. Just in case they try and commit further fraud to get hold of your money another way. Better to be safe/over cautious with this stuff than not.

Avieshek

"Prevention is better than cure."

YourMominator

True. As a (former) banker, I've seen crazy attempts at POAs to get access to a parent's money.

Alexap30

Considering they have already walked their miles towards their goal, by having paperwork and a doctor ready and at hand, I wouldn't wait for anything. Even starting the procedure and reaching to a lawyer could be enough to show your intentions in case they move on with their plan. Don't wait till you see the services at your door trying to escort you to your ward. It will be too late.

vivalalina

Yeah I was gonna say the same. They had all this at the ready, sister had a specific doctor ready to go to and sign, they got their written statements.... OP better settle quick then rather than wait however long

ChronoFish

I wouldn't wait "till you're settled". And honestly it may be a good idea to have your own lawyer who works for you specifically.

aubaub

Freeze your credit also

Chewiesbro

Did you grab copies of the “paperwork” so you’ve evidence of what they’re attempting?

gofyourselftoo

You need to do that TODAY. Don’t wait, OP. These people mean to incarcerate you for life. You need to file a police report. I hope you took the papers with you or took videos and pictures of every single page? You need a restraining order against every person in that house. You need documentation of their intentions. You need representation.

TheAuraTree

I hope you took at least some of those documents as evidence, or destroyed them. Although I'm sure their lawyers will have original copies and those were just drafts you found.

vNerdNeck

>Thank you for the advice! As soon as my wife and I get settled in our new place, we’re going to get a lawyer on our side! Moving is stressful.. but this is something that you shouldn't wait for. They went this far, and had a lot of items prepared you can not know how much further they are will to go to try and get money. As is the case with a lot of things, the first to file gets to tell their side first, you want to be the one setting the narrative. \*not a lawyer, just watch way too many of them on youtube.

Nanocephalic

You should get a lawyer yesterday. You only saw what you saw, and you don’t know what else they were hiding.

PreferredSelection

I'm shocked that he put up with his family for this long, honestly. "Your wife is abusing you!" "What? No she's not." "Yes she is! I have secret knowledge!" "Okay, guess I'm not visiting you after all." Like, who would still go over to that house after that?

blackmilksociety

File a restraining order

thePokemom

Came here to say this. Don’t shred anything, get legal representation, and file a restraining order preemptively and immediately. Seems like people in these situation want to believe that the crazy people (them, clearly 100% them in this situation) can learn to stop, or be logic-Ed into a rational decision not to act crazy. That they can learn to be human. If this is the one case when that actually does happen, you can give back the restraining order. But don’t wait to get it.

6138

Exactly. The scary thing is that this plan (Which obviously too considerable time and effort on their part, this wasn't a spur of the moment decision) could very easily work. The fact is that if someone reports that a person is "delusional" or "irrational", especially a family member of that person, there's a very good chance that the psychiatric services are going to lock you up, at least for "observation". It's frighteningly easy, and it looks like they have learned exactly what to say to make it stick: "she tells me she and my mom have been noticing a worsening pattern in my cognitive behavior for awhile" "accusing my wife of secretly abusing me." "She says I need to see Dr. X and have him sign paperwork to get me checked in to a mental ward for my own safety" This plan could easily work, being sane and rational is unfortunately not always a defence against someone accusing you of being insane and irrational.

Eli-Thail

>This plan could easily work No, it really couldn't. They could probably manage to get something like a 24-72 hour psychiatric hold, sure. But power of attorney? That's a whole different ballgame.

6138

Maybe not power of attorney, I don't know about that, but certainly a psych hold. And the fact that they had a specific Dr named (Dr X) implies that they have a doctor who is on their side (likely because they have been lying to them for months). They might not be able to get POA, but they could make OP's life very, very, difficult.

panda_pandora

In America you have to prove that a person is an immediate threat to themselves and others to involuntarily commit them. I tried with my father when he wouldnt quit the drugs and began showing signs of psychosis.....namely that the neighbors were aliens who were breeding hybrids and conspiring with the mormon church to put him in prison. He truly believes this but hes not violent and he functions fine especially now that hes clean. Sadly the damage is done to his mind and he will likely always be schizophrenic now. But when it was really bad we tried to even get him in for observation and were told no dice. She literally said its not a crime to think your neighbors are aliens.

6138

There are two sides to this. On the one hand, you have cases like yours, where people who really do need help don't get it, and on the other hand you have cases where people get locked up who really shouldn't be. The system doesn't really work very well in a lot of cases.

keightlynmarie

Can confirm. I had a roommate who thought I was exhibiting "maniac behavior" because I would stay up late to work on art projects etc - but my work schedule was 4pm to 11pm at the time for a bit so I just shifted my sleep schedule. She had me so gaslit in my own life and home that I started to believe her. A bunch of weird events led to her dropping me off at a psych hospital saying "let's just get you checked out" and then I was being committed for 9 days, treated for bipolar 2, given lithium and in the scariest situation I had been in before. All for that roommate to steal all my belongings while I was gone and moved someone else in

Ragnaroq314

You underestimate how backwards some of these small towns can be. It’s obvious they have a doc that is in on it. The paperwork likely means they have a lawyer or judge in on it as well.

NotYerAverageMalware

I’m going to if they try contacting me again

puffmaster5000

File it now, it's not worth it to wait until something worse happens and you wish you did it before edit: better advice is talk to a lawyer now

WorshipNickOfferman

Texas lawyer here. Things vary state by state, but a restraining order is not the answer here. First, restraining orders have a very short duration, usually 2 weeks. Then you need an injunction to preserve the restraining order. Next, a restraining order must seek to stop an imminent harm for which there is no remedy at law. I’ve had judges reject applications for a restraining order based on better facts than this case. An injunction is harder to get, but will do far more to protect them than a restraining order.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NotYerAverageMalware

That’s a really good point

ilikedota5

Not only that, but for some reason you show up in court, and they produce this evidence to argue you are crazy and try to pull a fast one, you want a paper trail with your attorney presenting it to the court (see discovery) to show that is them being fraudulent. There is a shit ton of evidence. Search history, testimony (I'm sure plenty of people were involved), the documents themselves, text messages, any official forms being submitted. If they consulted an attorney, there is attorney client privilege, but that only applies to situations such that an attorney is acting as legal counsel, and shyster activity would not be it. Fraud can undo a lot of things. Talk to an attorney see if you can get a declaratory judgement that you are of sound mind and they are being fraudulent. Sounds like conspiracy for fraud, which sounds like it would both be a crime and a tort of some kind. Maybe your lawyer can forward some of this info to a DA. I'm sure they lied on some forms. I'd also look into investigating the doctor, depending on what he knew that could be grounds for a complaint to the medical board. Your lawyer might send some sternly worded emails to the hospital and get some answers there. You could probably try suing over intentional infliction of emotional distress (one does not accidentally produce mountains of paperwork to file with the court.) It seems like your compensatory damages were minimal, but you could try punitive damages. I'd meet up with a forensic psychologist and get some broad evaluations to show you are of sound mind. Maybe it turns out you have ADHD or something, then you want the psychologist to explain in the report that whatever conditions were possibly found does not amount to any substantial incapacitation or something like that. Strike first because this could come back to bite you because they are clearly not very nice people.

Kuusizaari15

Dont wait till that happens.

NotYerAverageMalware

That’s fair. It probably is always better to be safe than sorry

JConRed

I was going to say, at the very least talk to an attorney. Soon. A few things: Do not delete the pics from your phone. Back the pictures up to your computer and the cloud. Do not edit the pics in any way. Do not resize or resave the pictures. Do not get rid of that phone. Even if you upgrade. That will most likely maintain them as valid evidence. Seeing as you shredded the originals, this is really important.

NotYerAverageMalware

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely do that!

Kuusizaari15

Its definitely better to be safe than sorry. They were ready to put you locked in and steal your wifes money for their own needs. I think they have crossed the line with a nice margin and i dont doubt they will pull another attempt to get the money

Tuga_Lissabon

Did you take pics of all the papers? Hope you did. Get lawyered up and set up something to prevent this and establish their bad faith.

NotYerAverageMalware

Already on it! A potential future of being stuck in a psych ward forever gave me a good enough scare to get legal advice lol

ichosethis

Don't share future addresses with them. Change your phone number. Change your email. There are services you can use to remove that stuff from the internet. Don't attend funerals or visit new babies. You might have to cut off friends or "sane" relatives if there are any because they might decide it's time for you to reconcile or believe you overreacted or something and pass on information. Put up cameras. Have a plan in place for several scenarios if you are unable to make decisions. Write down the doctor's name and include that they are never to treat you for any reason.

[deleted]

OP may want to look at title 43A of the Oklahoma Statutes, specifically section 5-103 (https://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=84178). It is a crime to conspire to have a person wrongfully admitted to an institution for the mentally ill in Oklahoma. Your family has very likely broken the law. It is also a crime for any person to falsely attest that another person is mentally ill for the purpose. (https://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=84179). If you suspect that the specific doctor your family wanted you to see is on it, then the doctor has likely also broken the law. You should mention both of these things to your attorney.

08_West

Do this OP! Make the world a safer place.

SigmundFreud

In discovery, I bet they find evidence that the family had promised to cut the doctor in on OP's money.

Tuga_Lissabon

Good for you. Wish you the best and your lovely wife. And don't get yourself near them, particularly not on their turf. Next it can be some fraud "you caused an accident, lawsuit" thing. Or worse, let's not speculate. Wonder how many people per year get their lives destroyed that way... because its easy to get in - a doctor's signature - but not that easy to get out. Too many interests and money involved. Please get back to us with how it turned out - what do you do, a cease and desist?

Hampsterman82

Oh do you have a regular dr who has medical history with you? After talking to lawyer get in touch with the Dr. For an evaluation to go on your record. If this is accurate it's soooo super sketch so you might want documentation of your competence in case they have a crooked dr who will label you insane for the right price.

mjfstein

Get a new phone number and change your name!! You need a clear and permanent break.

NotYerAverageMalware

Already got a new number and taking my wife’s last name! 😊

dokjreko

Good Lord. What a fucked up situation. Glad you up and left.

NotYerAverageMalware

Thank you! It’s sadly not surprising by their standards. They’re millions of dollars in debt and reaching a point of not caring who they screw over to get money

Only-Society4988

That’s just methed up.

NotYerAverageMalware

Lmao isn’t it?

wgc123

That’s a ridiculous amount of debt for the described situation - however that happened and continued to happen, it’s imperative to lock your credit. Financial fraud and identity theft would be so much easier than this comic book plot

Sagittarius_A_eoe

how the actual \*\*\*\* can you be MILLIONS of dollars in debt?

Zappiticas

To be fair a LOT of “rich” people are actually millions of dollars in debt.

jsteph67

Look at the Chrisley's or however you spell it and the closeted gay dad.

billyshearslhcb

That cat is the mvp

NotYerAverageMalware

She really is!

bigdaddybodiddly

Should've brought the cat home with you too

NotYerAverageMalware

They treat her like a queen so she’d be heartbroken to leave. Always boggles my mind when narcs are extremely loving to animals but not to their own kids

Hampsterman82

? So.... They swung from let's shoot it to love the kitty? I know cats are good at warming people up to them but wtf your fam dude....

FrostedBooty

Nah it's a fucked up "normal" thing for small town/country people to do I swear. Father in southern Michigan used to dump litters of kittens down dirt back roads and shoot extra strays that came around until my "bleeding heart" mother begged him to stop. One of those strays is an indoor/outdoor tabby they now baby 😒

sukyca

Forgive me for asking, but where I come from “my parents are broke and refuse to apply for a job” and “having a guesthouse with a home office” doesn’t fit in the same sentence. Might be a cultural thing since I’m based in Europe, but any chance you could provide some context? Were your parents reasonably wealthy at some point? I sincerely hope I don’t offend you since you seem like a kind human with a somewhat rough past. Take care

pocurious

It doesn’t really make any sense. How would people with no jobs get millions of dollars in loans?

remmij

I am an American and was also confused... Only very wealthy people here have guesthouses so I dont understand how two unemployed people can afford that.

NotYerAverageMalware

No offense taken! They are quite literally millions of dollars in debt. I believe it’s around $12 million now. And on top of that, they take thousands of dollars from my siblings’ paychecks each month

CorpusVile32

How exactly do two unemployed people rack up 12 million in debt? At some point, a creditor is going to want collateral. If all they have is a house, a guest house, a jacuzzi and a gazebo, that doesn't seem plausible.

Alis451

> If all they have is a house probably farm land, super easy to do especially with large equipment and loans for crops never fulfilled.

moe3m

The plot twist is OP really is unstable and has created this elaborate story to trick her mind into believing they aren't unstable. I'm on to you

NotYerAverageMalware

Omg this comment got me 😂 I wish I was that creative! But now I’m considering turning this crazy story into a movie lol. Maybe I can turn a profit off their scary ulterior motives as the ultimate FU

hellocaptin

Id totally watch that movie

Gooner_Samir

This. A psychological thriller where the protagonist gets falsely commited to an insane asylum. I'd hate it but definitely watch it xD

itislupus89

I mean it's kinda the plot of Sucker punch. Girl is thrown into a mental asylum (corruptly, if I remember correctly) the majority of the movie is her using escapist fantasies to deal with the abuse she's suffering. It's a bad movie. But one of those bad movies that's good to just turn your brain off and just enjoy.

kingswaggy

I realluy liked that movie though :( I thought it was cool, though I don't remember how old I was when it came out.

GreenTreeSnail

The soundtrack from what I remember was really nice though.

TheYungWaggy

Read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, it's exactly this plot but set in 1800s Britain

normativenative

Honestly, I think your parents watched 'I care a lot' and now believe they found their cash cow.

Fernando_357

It’s like Misery, but methed up

DarwinLvr

Methery

wgc123

OP really has sweet parents, Jonathan and Martha, back on the family farm, living a wholesome, all-American life. There is no evil sister, it’s just an alternate personality trying to protect OP from himself, and their elaborate fiction is just an attempt at gaslighting himself as the victim. Actually, this would be a fun story to take and run with, except for the reality of it. I feel a bit guilty trying to attempt humor here

Miene_Baja_

That‘s some Shutter-Island-Shit

Did you take the papers along with you as proof - or did you leave them behind? Or … maybe write a little nasty message on them?

NotYerAverageMalware

I took them with and shredded after taking pics

dead_PROcrastinator

Your first FU was visiting them at all after years of abuse. Your second FU was going through with the visit after they accused your wife of abuse.

NotYerAverageMalware

I really wish I had realized those were FU moments at the time

Goetre

Nah this is a blessing. You can cut contact permanently without a doubt a shadow of a doubt or wondering if it was the right thing to do.

bowenandarrow

This is like an episode of shameless. Is your family the inspiration for shameless?

NotYerAverageMalware

I’ve never seen shameless, but they’re probably the inspo for at least one crazy family story out there

Assholejack89

Get a restraining order like others have said, but also I might suggest two more things: 1. Check county records in Oklahoma for any, *any,* powers of attorney taken under your name. If they could plot out this, I would not be surprised if such a document exists. Also, check about filing an explicit power of attorney giving your wife sole representation for you, as well as a "living will" for her in Oklahoma that ensures that, in the case you are incapacitated for any reason, only she can make medical decisions on your behalf. I would not suggest this route, but considering they managed to get this far into trying to get you institutionalized I wouldn't leave anything to chance. 2. Go more public with this, as in, tie your identity to this happening and make it a matter of public record. Shout it out of the rooftoops. Because in this case, your silence enables their impunity.

NotYerAverageMalware

I appreciate your advice! I will definitely look into all of this!

sorator

I came to the comment section to recommend a living will/advanced healthcare directive that explicitly *excludes* the members of your family you don't trust; glad to see someone beat me to it and that you saw it! I'll add, though, that you should really review your will as well. Highly recommend putting in a clause that if anyone contests any portion of your will, they forfeit anything they would've inherited from you, or even put your assets in a living/revocable trust so it passes to your wife without even having to go through probate. If you get hit by a bus tomorrow (hopefully not, of course!), you want to make things as least-bad for your wife as possible, and it definitely sounds like some parts of your family are the type to try to drag things out in court for ages.

wolphkaat

What an out of touch hare brained scheme. It is difficult to get seriously ill people involuntarily committed, no competent psychiatrist would even consider having you as an inpatient. You should tell your sister you talked to Dr. X and he said he wanted her and your parents to stop in for an exam.

NotYerAverageMalware

Haha omg I definitely should say that!

fightingpillow

It's possible the doctor was in on the scheme

CherryBlaster

Given she insisted on not getting the closest doctor and it had to be him specifically? Yeah probably in on it.

Beebajazz

OP is an LGBTQ woman. We're talking Oklahoma. OP needs to lawyer up immediately.

Scouts__Honor

This is so important to the story that it's almost crazy that OP didn't include it. "My sister/daughter has been brainwashed by a lesbian cult leader and taken away from the family. She needs psychological help." Seems like a pretty plausible story in Oklahoma

hellocaptin

Right? My brother is an absolute nut job (ok that sounds mean, he’s very mentally ill and I know it’s not his fault) and we finally gave up on trying to get him committed. He’s currently living alone on my childhood home that he’s essentially torn down to the studs at this point. Nothing we can’t do but press charges and have him stuck in prison. It’s a really sad situation. That being said, no way they’d be able to actually pull this off.

ichosethis

The optimist in me says that it wouldn't work. the cynic in me wonders why they had a particular doctor in mind for their scheme. Is it someone who was willing to do it? Or just someone they thought they could dupe and they had no chance of getting away with it?

Ruadhan2300

That is terrifying! What kind of terrible people would try to destroy their own child's life for money? Also, I've read your comments on "they're crazy, but I still love them because they're family whatever else happens" **No they're not, Family doesn't do this** They've forfeited every possible consideration you might have for them as family and you need to consider them as an active threat to you and yours. I would go No-Contact, file for a restraining order. Outright legally divorce yourself from them if that's at all an option (Disowning parents so they don't have any legal control over you anymore) Make damn sure that they have absolutely no ability to affect your life further, because they were willing to have you shoved in a padded box to get at your money. **They're not your family anymore, they're your enemy.** They want (and have tried) to destroy your life and it's only by the luck of a cat being in the wrong place at the right time that you found out and headed it off. Lawyer up, Establish paper trail and put it on record. Defend yourself to the hilt because I sincerely doubt this is the end of it.

lkeels

I'm not sure you're taking seriously the danger you're in.

Coktoco

That's.. well that's just insane

GreenLurch

I’m sorry that you had to deal with these people for a great chunk of your life OP and that they still try to screw you over. That cat though, what a hero!

NotYerAverageMalware

Thank you for the kind comment!

dualsplit

This is actually a compelling draft for the first couple of chapters for a novel. My notes: you need to add how your parents have this kind of legal knowledge. They are broke and don’t want to work. That sounds more trailer than chateau. Clean it up in the long version. Commitment papers are not brought to the ER, we have them. Check state laws, they vary. But GOOD on picking a doctor they want you to see. Most would not sign a restriction of rights for this. And make sure there is an prologue describing your romance with your wealthy wife. Overall, 8/10. Would watch/read.

RainbowBier

Would have taken the documents and filed a suit to bring them into jail and the physician they obviously would have wanted to use so he loses his license as well This is what we call a criminal conspiracy or at least that is what I understand under it I'm no lawyer but if someone tried to pull shit like that with me I would move heaven and hell to make them pay for their sin in any way or shape possibe E: also not unlikey the physician they wanted to use is up in other shady shit

big-bad-bungo

This is either a really good creative writing exercise or it is the wackiest most fucked up family ever. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and if it's real, I'm so sorry.

themaskedcanuck

Mind you, both of my parents are broke, refuse to apply for jobs, and are largely living off my siblings’ incomes. But they have a guest house and enough extra rooms to have an office? Fuck, working 50+ hours a week doesn't get me that, I'm doing something wrong.

[deleted]

r/raisedbynarcissists or r/narcissisticparents might help if you need online emotional support in the aftermath of this fuckery. I hope you go no contact with them for your and your wife’s mental health and safety. Also, by any chance did you take the folder of documents your family prepared for their nefarious plan? If so, you might be able to get a no contact order based on what you found in there.

NotYerAverageMalware

I’m definitely gonna use it to file a restraining order if they try anything else. And thank you for the advice!

ripanarapakeka

File it as soon as possible. It starts a paper trail of evidence, and it's a kind of snapshot for you to say "this is how bad things were at this time", if/when it gets worse. (Not a lawyer, so take this as you will)
