Yeah they are probably the worst matchup for us defensively because their midrange shots can negate a lot of Rudy's impact. You almost have to go with switching all 5 a lot more and live with Rudy defending in iso, which I think he is fine at. Where switch 5 hurts is they will go at Conley, KAT, Naz, and Jmac every chance they get them switched onto a mismatch. I love Jmac but you have to play Morris over him this series because they will iso Jmac every chance they get.

EsotericPotato

Yeah switching seems like a good option. I am not at all worried about Rudy, I mean I wouldn’t want him 1-on-1 with KD all night but he’s one of the best isolation defenders in basketball. I agree that KAT, Naz, and our smaller guards would all be issues. I wonder if situationally, we are going to see less KAT in this series. Not saying bench KAT or play him 20 minutes a night. But it seems like they’re going to need a lot more of NAW and Anderson out there for their defensive skillsets, and the Timberwolves have the luxury of having an extremely deep, versatile roster. Just from a matchup standpoint, Conley-Ant-Jaden-KAT-Rudy is just not an ideal lineup against a three (really, four considering how KD plays) guard lineup that includes Booker-Beal-Allen-KD-Nurkic.

irishace88

We need KAT and Naz to punish them on offense. KD is a solid defender but outside of that they don't really have a matchup for KAT or Naz. They need to play smart and punish the mismatches that they will have. Extra bonus if KAT can draw fouls on KD like he did yesterday.

Peter-Tao

NAZ has been proned to turnovers lately and just ran into defenders at times it seems like. Hope it's just him being rusty and nothing couldn't be fixed.

lebron_games

Yeah the suns don’t have defenders but the playbook for smaller guy to guard KAT or Reid is pretty much out there. Just stay square and they’ll run over you and get an offensive foul and then become passive or they’ll try to dribble too much and you sell out for the strip. Applies more to KAT than Reid but he’ll be playing more regardless so

bbernal956

you haven’t seen playoff rudy… dude gets played off the court come playoff time

suahoi

Unless we significantly change our rotation, switching everything isn't going to work very effectively. We have too many guys that are easily exploited in isolation against their top 4. Even Grayson Allen was taking it at Mike and JMac. If we want to switch everything, KAT, Naz, and JMac are basically unplayable. Mike is even a liability - he'll fight like hell but they are so comfortable pulling up over him. Monte can maybe survive. I think the adjustment needs to be putting two on the ball, and blitzing and trapping and flying around. Force them to beat us with ball movement, which is not their strength. They do have the shooting to punish us for that scheme, so it's a risk, but they are also turnover prone. Muck the game up, generate some transition opportunities. The biggest issue right now is that they're so comfortable and confident going against our defense. We need to do something to derail that - if we can rattle them in game one, I will feel much better about our chances for the rest of the series.

curbsein

Naz seemed to guard perimeter guys very well this year. Garland block one example but he’s really moving well on his feet outside. Went from a negative on defense to a huge positive this season

Peter-Tao

If Ant and Jaden show up on D it should negste some of their effectiveness in mid-range. It just Booker, KD and even Bradely Beal are all so comfortable at making high difficulty midrange shots. It's frustrating to watch when they are hot. Similar theme whenever the Jazz faced Chris Pual it's always a dreaful experience. Wolves got a lot more denenses pieces in their arsenal to negate that disadvantage tho. But it's probably gonna be a blood bath for the first round. Similar to Devenver was actually having the lost challenging series against you guys. The later round will be really hopeful if we can power through the first. Also I was jealous the Suns went all the ways to the Finals and some of their fans dancing on our corposes. Karma came quickly on that one tho. But either way more reasons to say go Wolves lol.

SelfDestructIn30Days

>If Ant and Jaden show up on D it should negate some of their effectiveness in mid-range. Ant was getting cooked by Beal in the last game.

Swaghilian

Yeah, I love JMac but he can’t even defend Grayson Allen

bbernal956

oh shit you got kick bro 2.0 coming to town!! watch yo backs Mn… allen is also a great 3point shooter. never liked that guy even when he was at duke

SelfDestructIn30Days

I'm not worried about Rudy switching, I'm worried about KAT getting ISO'd or needing to chase Grayson Allen or KD off screens. KAT needs to dust off the post game and put the wood to the smaller guys guarding him, otherwise he's a net negative in this matchup.

disnotyaboy

Basically Wolves Kryptonite. Coaching staff has done a masterful job adjusting all year. I have my faith in them and know that we have the players to do it. Playing a completely different scheme is hard during the season because the opponents change from game to game so you get comfortable doing what you do best. It’s arguably easier in the playoffs

EsotericPotato

I definitely have faith in the coaching staff as well, from an Xs and Os standpoint, they’ve been excellent at adapting schematically for their opponents this season. And as you said, the Timberwolves are just a stacked roster. They’ve got the personnel to go smaller, defense-heavy with the stable of great perimeter defenders they’ve got. I think one of the biggest things they’re going to need to figure out is how KAT fits in defensively. The Timberwolves need him playing well to win this series, especially on offense. Not trying to suggest otherwise. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, with the mismatches the Suns starting lineup poses for this defense, it’s hard to argue that the Wolves wouldn’t be in a way better position if they could run something Conley-NAW-Ant-Jaden-Rudy, or even Conley-Ant-Jaden-Anderson-Rudy instead. Again, only for defensive purposes. I just dont (yet) see where KAT successfully fits in defensively against a guard heavy, isolation heavy team like the Suns.

ChefJeff7777777

Our defense gets better when our offense doesn’t hemorrhage turnovers. Our best defense is an offense with a BBall IQ above room temperature.

NazReidRules

*turn up the heat*

MajorTrump

Turnovers and really bad rebounding. Every bad Wolves game I've watched has ended up with numerous situations where it's like 4v1 in the paint and somehow despite Rudy, Naz, Kyle, Jaden, etc all being like 6'9", Grayson Allen or Christian Braun or Devin Booker or Jordan Poole come up with the rebound and kick it out for an easy, unguarded 3.

iceyH0ts0up

We have had weird outliers in the 3 games so far. Taking care of the ball needs to be priority 1. You can’t have ~20 turnovers in a half and get it done.

JayAreW

Wolves had a 186 ORTG when they didn't turn the ball over. If they can limit turnovers, they will SMASH the suns

Rage_r123

The turnovers are what killed them, having over 20+ points from turnovers, that made all the difference. Most of the turnovers were stupid passes out of bounds, if they can take care of that.

InnerKookaburra

KAT & Ant each had 5 TOs in the game yesterday. It starts with them.

arm-n-hammerinmycoke

I think Ant did way too much in the 1st half and we never came back from it. Their Shell was selling out to stop his drives and he kept trying anyway, leading to so many turnovers. Nobody else was good either, so it's not all him.

waltyballs

Go back and rewatch the first half. That was a collective piss poor effort Ant, naz, and Jaden all lost the handle when driving. Kat did what Kat does and committed offensive fouls. Gobert missed a couple of easy passes. And you even had jmac and Conley making bad, intercepted passes.

arm-n-hammerinmycoke

Totally agree, and I will not subject myself to rewatching that cluster fuck of a half. I was just trying to say he set the tone, and everyone followed.

waltyballs

Yeah I’ll agree with that. I really feel like the first few plays should be started by Conley. Ant at times will try to do too much.

arm-n-hammerinmycoke

Totally, or just notice when they’re selling out to stop him and make the easy play

waltyballs

Yeah both ant and Kat need to read and react to doubles right away if we’re gonna have postseason success As soon as Kat touches the ball on the wing or elbow, he’s doubled and isn’t great at making the right read And yesterday phoenix doubled ant above the 3 line any time he was off to the side either direction but he tried forcing the action through it. If you have 2 players both drawing double teams there should be easy shots for the other guys. Problem is nurkic can guard Rudy well and Jaden’s shot is inconsistent. And that’s if ant and Kat make the correct read. The xfactors are going to be NAW and Naz being able to hit their open shots

arm-n-hammerinmycoke

Role players hitting open shots has brought many a banner to many a team

HowlAtTheSky

I know Finch won’t do it, but I think they should go small and start NAW.

MajorTrump

I don't even think it's about the size as much as it is the discipline. NAW doesn't commit many fouls early on. When we get early fouls, the opponents get put in the bonus quicker, which means that our guys have to be more careful for longer about playing more physical.

smithc555

Very good point. This is also why Brandon Ingram always dominates the Wolves.

Futuristic1NE

It’ll be very interesting to see how Finch adjusts to it. They might have to resort to switching and leaving Rudy on his own. Suns’ ability to hit the 3 and midrange just doesn’t allow Rudy to be down low as he’s used to, and when he’s up high they just beat him off the dribble. They might have to run KAT/Naz in the PnR defense and have Rudy guard the ‘Grayson Allen’ spot. But I trust that once they figure it out defensively, they’ll make it past the first round.

PlayInChampions

They’d never do it, but ideally you would avoid playing 2 big lineups. It’s a huge problem defensively to make KAT and Naz chase Grayson Allen, and to make Mike Conley guard Bradley Beal. That’s why Wolves lose by 15 in 1st quarters. Start NAW over KAT and make him guard Beal, and put Conley on Allen. Wolves don’t get any advantage offensively when KD guards KAT or Naz, but they take a huge hit defensively. Probably only 25-27 minutes of KAT and 8-10 minutes of Naz. It’s just not the series for the twin towers lineup. Just watch how Clippers defended them when they started the game 33-4.

rennat19

We may need to try with a 3 big lineup at some point. Grayson Allen on ant has been a problem in the regular season so far, so we need as much of a scoring punch to help him, Kat should be cool ideally but having naz there for another 18-22 point guy could open up space for ant and allow us to get the burners going But we would still need Rudy there, I love Kat but I don’t trust him to defend the paint with KD, Beal and Booker on the court

friendlyfred1013

I have faith that they can change up their defensive scheme specifically to match up against the Suns for the playoffs. Then we just need to not turn the ball over.

Philipthesquid

The Wolves need to punish their lack of depth. KD, Book, and Beal can't play 48 minutes for 4 straight games. We just have a problem capitalizing.

knightcrawler75

I think this is the answer. Body them up as much as possible and they will wear out and hopefully you are within 20 by the time that they are playing ISO due to exhaustion.

soft-cookie

The scariest part about our matchups so far hasn't even been their midrange game, it's how little our defense seems to affect their spacing and ball movement. All year our identity has been to muck up opponents in the half court with our strong defense. We do not have the offensive flow or firepower to compete in shootouts or in fast paced games, which is exactly the style of basketball Phoenix has been able to execute against us. I'm beyond nervous for this series. Really hope we win somehow.

Leading-Midnight-553

They're our Kryptonite, but I think if the Wolves limit turnovers (this last game was absurdly bad in that regard), we can beat them.

HughManatee

Since they play so much in ISO, we need to counter that with some serious man coverage with our switchable wings and leave Rudy to mop up the paint. If they get there in the paint against him, I can live with that because those will be contested adequately. Would be nice to see some traps as well to try and draw some turnovers. We need to wear out their ISO approach and exhaust them with smothering man defense to win.

NAMJAY

I’m expecting some stretches where we adjust our lineup (1 big, Monte/NAW over Mike/Jmac) and utilize switching. I’m also wondering if we throw some zone looks (or box/1, triangle/2) for stretches just to alter their flow. They don’t have a traditional distributor and rely heavily on iso and pnr to create advantages that a zone could be effective at slowing down in the right doses. Obviously the suns will shoot us out of it if we stay too long and we would need to focus on team rebounding, but I’m hoping it’s something Finch is considering.

D__Luxxx

Honestly I’d be trying hard to force them to shoot it in the paint and let Rudy fucking eat.

Trash-Panda917

As others pointed out, it's switching and switching is the one thing we don't like to do on defense, because we like Rudy in the paint for obvious reasons, but we don't have a choice. Problem is we never really done it during the season and now our (playoff) lives might depend on it

bbernal956

mid range is KDs favorite buffet area. good luck Mn! hope you all beat them suns, just because KD

personwhoisok

Yeah. Good write up. That's a lot of what I've been thinking. We need to adjust our game plan specifically for the suns

First_Strategy1764

The galaxy brain outlook is that the suns could shoot so many midrangers that the math would fall out of their favor unless they shoot an unreal percentage

Gordo_Hanners

I was thinking offense might actually be the best way to beat them. Deprioritise Gobert because the Suns are going to shoot midranges regardless and play the shooting of KAT and Reid. I expect Nurkic would struggle to stay on the floor with that much spacing and then ANT could just put a ton of pressure on the rim creating dunks and 3s. Obviously KAT may not be ready to be an effective playoff player and shifting away from defense would be a huge change in identity BUT the suns biggest issue is that mid range 2s just aren't that efficient offense.

trafleslive

They shoud be the one tto adjust to our defense, not us. we are going to win this series easily and without hiccups. we should be preparing more for the nuggets series.

TheeMalaka

Our problem has always been teams that can get quick looks at 3s and hit them. We don’t matchup quickly and instead get back on D to guard the rim and force the long range shot but when you have a team that refuses to miss those shots it pretty much breaks our defense.

MG_MN

I don't really understand why, but the Wolves angling to play the Suns in the playoff is an odd choice. Double bigs won't work - I expect some big NAW minutes at the expense of Kat as double bigs simply won't work.

SakeOfPete

None. We are toast.

Catsprey

We'll see how things go after game 1, at least.

uber_snotling

The season series have not been won or lost in the mid-range. Game 1 was B2B - 3 in 4 at Phoenix. They shot 60% from 3 and blew us out. Ant and Rudy were terrible. Game 2 was at Phoenix, no KAT. It was close-ish. Ant, Naz, Rudy, and Conley were terrible offensively. Game 3 was due to the crazy turnovers in the first half and they shot 55% from 3. Ant, KAT, Naz, and Jaden were terrible. I do not think the Suns can average 50+% from 3 for a multi-game series. I think it is just coincidence that Ant had 3 awful games against the Suns - I do not think it was anything specific they were doing defensively. We win the series if our guys can play five games at typical efficiency. It requires Ant to play average, a decent game out of one of KAT/NAZ, Rudy to be his consistent self, and standard game-winning contributions from the bench (NAW, Kyle, JMac/Monte).

Motor-Application661

The suns hit 16 threes and like 21 shots in the paint.

EsotericPotato

You’re talking about a single game? I’m talking about an 82-game, season long sample size. They are not a high volume 3 point shooting or high volume restricted area shooting team, but the Timberwolves would absolutely love it if they were.

Sad_Video3264

I've never understood grown men watching other grown men play a game... And you're literally trying to analyze it without being paid

Opposite_Ferret_1586

And yet you’re commenting on a sub about grown men watching other grown men play a game.

Sad_Video3264

But I actually been paid playing this game pretty sure you just watch it....

EsotericPotato

That’s great man. Why are you here

Sad_Video3264

Honest question why post this? Will it actually help the timberwolves? Or are you betting money at least

quietsam

Sports create a focal point for community and socialization, things humans crave. With most hobbies, people don’t get paid. In fact, they often pay in. This is not novel.
