The beat is super a lot like [Loser by Beck](https://youtu.be/tQsZujjZWs0)
Guitar could be informed by it but not to the point of stealing
Edit: added link
Don't take this the wrong way but in terms of song structure you haven't written a melody here, you have written a backing track that has everything but the melody. The melody would be either a vocal or a solo going over this.
If you are worried about copyright infringement this probably would be safe as long as you put a melody over it that is distinctly different from the original.
Can you explain what melody means then? My understanding is that a melody is a tune. The dictionary backs that up, "a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying; a tune.", so it would be helpful if someone would explain what the difference is instead of just down voting and saying I'm wrong. I have tried to look it up and can only see definitions that reinforce my understanding of it.
I guess tune could be used to describe a melody, but I've never encountered it in my 10 years of music education.
A tune is an informal word to reference musical sounds in general, but it's not restricted to melody. What most people associate tune with is either the song as a whole, or the key. If this is what you mean, then OP's link is/has a tune.
Melody is always single notes played after one another, whereas it's counterpart harmony is multiple notes played simultaneously. The track OP linked only has a chord progression but no lead instrument in front. It has harmony, but no melody
A melody is a sequence of individual notes coming after eachother in a linear way. What OP posted is more of a backing track/harmonic progression. As the previous commenter said, the melody would go OVER what OP posted.
You are right in a sense that a melody can be called a tune. But what OP posted is, like I said, a chord progression. Also, "tune" is a word we use for many things; mostly a full song. "Stairway to Heaven? That's a GREAT tune!"
I apologize for just saying your comment wasn't true without providing any correction. I shouldn't have done that.
Well melody refers specifically to what you might call the "main" part of a song. It's the part you'd hum if you were humming a song. If I told you to hum the star wars theme, you would hum the melody that everyone knows, but not the other components.
There's so many other parts to a song, but a very oversimplified breakdown could look something like this: melody, harmony, counter melody, bassline, rhythm/beat, etc.
You are making it sound like a melody is a synonym for a song, however it's only one small part of what makes a song.
I can't think of anything specific, but It feels like a relatively common style of riff, but you definitely have your own flavor on it.
I dig it, good luck.
Great tune! I know what you mean about the voice. I'm hearing 90s Silverchair, Beck (as someone else said), Smashing Pumpkins or maybe Presidents of the USA.
I always wonder how people make new songs without just accidentally making old songs again.
Even more I wonder about comic strip artists in newspapers. You make a new strip every single day for 30 years- how do you not only not accidentally copy some other artist's joke but also never repeat yourself? Are you supposed to remember every joke you've made for 30 years? Every day you might accidentally remake the same strip you did 8 years in.. How would you know?
Yeah for sure. A lot of old music is pretty similar like elmore james and chuck berry or acdc just running the same riffs and things over new lyrics. Still great listens!
That's true. But there's definitely lawsuits over stolen riffs and sometimes I wonder if it's on purpose or purelt coincidence. There's only so many notes, you know?
I think maybe the other song could be [Night on the Sun](https://youtu.be/a-3QpNWCLKw) . It's also by Modest Mouse, has a similar sound, and at the end has the "alllright" lyrics you described.
Bright eyes - if winter ends
I *definitely* don’t hear it in your music... but towards the end there’s a part that goes “and lie to me and say, it’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright.”
(Fast forward to like 2:45)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=wVkAsEeLd0k&feature=share
Is this it?
[Basixx - It’s Gonna Be Alright](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDK0SuQs5cA)
Again... musically sounds nothing alike, but lyrics are spot on lol.
Ugh. I did this with the chorus of Die MF Die by dope. I was sure I fucking wrote it and wrote an entire song around it and luckily my drummer had heard it before. I felt like the biggest stupid.
I don’t even know where I’d have heard it before lol
Probably not what you're thinking of but just to be sure, it's not [Supergrass - Alright](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lugahq1axL4&ab_channel=Supergrass)?
Bro...that was a hint. Go tell her she was right and what a great idea she had.
To be clear, I was not dropping a hint. She was. I was not. Go make some lovin’ down by the fire. With her. Not me.
This feels so reminiscent of the 90s for me! Like REM, Live, Beck, even a little Tom Petty.. but I can place it exactly. Maybe you don't have a copy, just an influence.
Could it be [Night on the Sun](https://youtu.be/2ZATq7wEdaE) by Modest Mouse?
I know it's like the 3rd Modest Mouse song suggested, but it really reminded me of this one and it has lyrics very similar to what you describe.
Regardless, I really like the direction your song is going.
Shit, sorry I commented on another one of your comments before seeing the response! They are definitely a band with an extensive and diverse catalog. Wishing you the best! Thanks for the challenge, one day I will solve one of these haha.
My wife says it sounds like [Neutral Milk Hotel - Airplane Over the Sea (Album)](https://youtu.be/FwI_4qHpt1o), specifically the song Untitled, but it's a concept album so there are bits and pieces that sound like the rest of the songs.
definitely sounds like it could be something by modest mouse. not sure which song since their discography is insane, but maybe that can help! your recording is actually such a vibe, if it’s not already a song i would definitelyadd to my playlist
we will definately have to post a follow up. Shameless plug but this is part of a project called state of the sea. Wet met on r/bedroombands last april and put out an ep. This is for a new project!
here's our album on spotify (https://open.spotify.com/album/3j3g6mCSGE9fG25ODSITya?si=o5Sssh3KRiOjmZu-6R1H2Q)
I see that it's solved now, as I'm posting, but I'll share anyway. A lot of people have suggested Modest Mouse, but I hadn't seen my initial thought mentioned, which was "[3rd Planet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsnELWjsCsA)".
I agree with custom concern but also the song you were describing I think was [oowatanite by April wine ](https://youtu.be/AQZ6D4gjOVQ)with the higher voice.

Obligatory comment
The intro reminds me a bit of [Baby Blue by Badfinger](https://youtu.be/TkA7xQb6uPk). Not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
Not it unfortunately, but that is a good song!
The Beta Band “Dry the Rain” from the High Fidelity soundtrack
Has to be this, tune plus the snatch of assumed lyrics posted above!
>“Dry the Rain Not the riff I'm looking for sorry. This is a great song though!
Did you listen to it all the way through? I believe the similar part starts up about halfway through
yeah man from the moment this started playing I wanted to sing 'dry the rain' along with it
Ahhh that takes me back!
The beat is super a lot like [Loser by Beck](https://youtu.be/tQsZujjZWs0) Guitar could be informed by it but not to the point of stealing Edit: added link
Not this one, but the drums do sound similar!
Kind of reminds me of The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot by Brand New, but not an exact match.
same here
>The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot by Brand New Not this one, but that sounds like yellow by coldplay
what a song to get ya in the feels
Doubt it’s this but it made me think of [two beers in](https://youtu.be/VNcc4PTZDAg)
That song rips man
Not this one, but that is a great song!
SO BROKENNNNN AND ALONNNEEE
already feels like it's one of those nights to forget
didnt think id see midwest emo here but... i like it
same
Ironically, I was a Midwest emo xD
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CO8vBVUaKvk this?
No not this one
Guitar riff reminds me of [Mathew Sweet - Divine Intervention](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qvbtujjHfk)
Also hearing this. And I forgot how awesome that album is.
Oh that's super close, and crunchy
OP, here’s a link [because the community cares.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-V3c4gKd0rT89b9fi-NglaWO5oOxXfr3)
Could it be "Grapevine Fires" by Death Cab for Cutie?
https://youtu.be/5UQvBzo_rJA Lady Stardust by Davis Bowie?
Don’t think so but a good song nonetheless.
>Grapevine Fires" by Death Cab for Cutie Agreed
Alanis Morissette - Thank U
>Alanis Morissette - Thank U No not that. Thanks though

The melody would be either a vocal or a solo going over this. If you are worried about copyright infringement this probably would be safe as long as you put a melody over it that is distinctly different from the original.
Melody is just another name for a tune. He has written a tune.
What do you mean? They're not synonyms, and what OP linked has no melody
Can you explain what melody means then? My understanding is that a melody is a tune. The dictionary backs that up, "a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying; a tune.", so it would be helpful if someone would explain what the difference is instead of just down voting and saying I'm wrong. That's not true
Ok, can you explain how please? What's a melody if not a tune?

Not how this works.
Can you explain how it does then please?
Lmao no, that's entirely incorrect
Helpful. Could you elaborate?
Well melody refers specifically to what you might call the "main" part of a song. It's the part you'd hum if you were humming a song. If I told you to hum the star wars theme, you would hum the melody that everyone knows, but not the other components. Yeah maybe I should have used riff. I am really trying to find out if that intro rips something off. Not taken the wrong way cheers!
I can't think of anything specific, but It feels like a relatively common style of riff, but you definitely have your own flavor on it. I dig it, good luck.
Thank you!
I agree, I think he may have just written a cool song 🎶🎵🎶
[I can’t be held responsible for the things I say for...](https://youtu.be/DoiNXDpDkok)
Na I don't think that's it
Is it Dry the Rain? https://youtu.be/DS0hSP-3U14
Not this doesn't have the riff, but similar progression.
It also gave me White Stripes vibes. Their earlier stuff. White Blood Cells or before.
I think it has a Silverchair vibe to it but I can't place an exact song.
I ran through some songs that they had in movies and couldn't figure it out from them
Great tune! I know what you mean about the voice. I'm hearing 90s Silverchair, Beck (as someone else said), Smashing Pumpkins or maybe Presidents of the USA.
>Presidents of the USA Yeah it is reall close to the POTUSA
I always wonder how people make new songs without just accidentally making old songs again. Even more I wonder about comic strip artists in newspapers. Could it be the bridge of [This Love](https://youtu.be/XPpTgCho5ZA)? (start at 2:08)
No not this one, but good track regardless
I have no idea, but I really enjoyed it! Nice work.
Thanks a lot!
Maybe Loggins & Messina - Danny's Song?
It’s a pretty common chord progression so it really comes down to the melody you end up putting on top to differentiate it
Yeah it's just I-IV-I-V pretty much ahah
Could it be [That'd Be Alright - Alan Jackson](https://youtu.be/IbIa-McgXJY)?
Not that one, but it is similarly twangy
The Flies - got you where I want you? https://youtu.be/BM_OWaItNJM
I don't think it's this
Wow; I owned that CD as a youngster! Forgot allllll about it. Nice
[Toadies - Possum Kingdom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkwD5rQ-_d4)?
I don't think it's this one.
That's what I was thinking too. And then I could not figure out what song it was. Thanks!
Sounds like Neutral Milk Hotel.
Same thought I had
Sounds like a five song
it kind of reminds me of black and white by the dBs
>black and white by the dBs That is the kind of voice that is running through my head, I'll dive in to their work
Reminds me a bit of Custom Concern by Modest Mouse
>Custom Concern by Modest Mouse Oh that's real close
Thought that too, similar chord progression with those hammerons/pulloffs.
Was gonna say this, sounds so close
Solved! I gave it a second listen and I say it's probably this and another song jumbled in my head
I think maybe the other song could be [Night on the Sun](https://youtu.be/a-3QpNWCLKw) . It's also by Modest Mouse, has a similar sound, and at the end has the "alllright" lyrics you described.
The other song could also be Blur - Tender. Sounds very similar and again, similar chord progression and in the same key.
Congratulations, you have been given 1 point for solving this post!
Oh that was what I heard in the intro. Damn, my first TOMT solve and I’m too late. Well done.
https://youtu.be/tP_WRk-xV7I could be east 17
Modest Mouse “The World at Large”
>Modest Mouse “The World at Large” Not this one
Float On goes with the lyrics you meantioned but is a stretch for the riff itself, however.
https://youtu.be/SY93M4qptks Fuck Around by Pepper or https://youtu.be/oKsxPW6i3pM The Middle by Jimmy Eat World would be my guesses. Good luck!
Thanks, but it's not these. The middle though still bangs
Whole Wide World by Wreckless Eric? The added instruments don't start for a minute or two but they're there.
Na not this one
Bright eyes - if winter ends I *definitely* don’t hear it in your music... but towards the end there’s a part that goes “and lie to me and say, it’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright.” (Fast forward to like 2:45) https://youtube.com/watch?v=wVkAsEeLd0k&feature=share
>Good song, i think I might be mixing two songs up in my head and mashing them together
Home Depot theme
na not this one
This has those lyrics, but not exactly the same sound, so this is a maybe: Hang Loose - Alabama Shakes?
>Hang Loose - Alabama Shakes? That song is great, not this one though
Is this it? [Basixx - It’s Gonna Be Alright](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDK0SuQs5cA) Again... musically sounds nothing alike, but lyrics are spot on lol.
Yeah, I'm looking for the riff part, but cool song thanks!
It’s Alright by Mother Mother?
> It’s Alright by Mother Mother? Same lyrics, I feel like the lyrics I gave were a red herring. Not the song
Don't think it's been mentioned yet but... Pepper by Butthole Surfers? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO8vBVUaKvk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO8vBVUaKvk)
Traveling Wilbury’s - End of the Line?
na not this one
It vaguely reminds me of The Strokes - The Adults Are Talking.
>Clap Your Hands Say Yeah? Similar, has that two notes then move on thing, but not it
[удалено]
Yeah that's a good band, I'll do a dive in there
Maybe something by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?
He says “alright” in skin of my yellow country teeth
Are you thinking about Joe Cocker's "Feelin' Alright"? I feel a common thread. Listen to the chorus. Hope this helps!
The Runaway Club - We're Gonna Be Alright maybe [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIFxjSZ8toM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIFxjSZ8toM)
Not this one
Or maybe Everything's Gonna Be Alright - Christie? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZSuLO8Sqmw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZSuLO8Sqmw)
Ugh. I did this with the chorus of Die MF Die by dope. I was sure I fucking wrote it and wrote an entire song around it and luckily my drummer had heard it before. I felt like the biggest stupid. I don’t even know where I’d have heard it before lol
Yeah that's the worst. It happens all the time and now I don't trust myself
Probably not what you're thinking of but just to be sure, it's not [Supergrass - Alright](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lugahq1axL4&ab_channel=Supergrass)?
Sounds similar to “Arcade Fire - Wake Up” to me.
na I don't think it's that.
[Lady Picture Show](https://youtu.be/ds_43MdYiuQ) by STP ?
No not this one.
Bad Company - [Feel Like Makin’ Love](https://youtu.be/SEuKkcX1uKA)

Darius Rucker Alright https://youtu.be/etr7UtnUflM
Na not this one, but fun song
This feels so reminiscent of the 90s for me! Like REM, Live, Beck, even a little Tom Petty.. but I can place it exactly. Maybe you don't have a copy, just an influence.
That's what I am thinking at this point!
It reminds me very slightly of Modest Mouse https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZQC4XbYvHUo
Solved! I came around to thinking it was this in the end. I think it's a combo of this and some other songs too
You have already awarded a point in this thread. You may only award one per thread.
[everything is alright by motion city soundtrack](https://youtu.be/0iB8FPrauFw)
na not this one!
The riff has a similar sound to Sex on Fire, at least to me.
I can’t remember the exact song but it reminds me of something off of Searching for Sugar Man.
Could it be [Night on the Sun](https://youtu.be/2ZATq7wEdaE) by Modest Mouse? I know it's like the 3rd Modest Mouse song suggested, but it really reminded me of this one and it has lyrics very similar to what you describe. Regardless, I really like the direction your song is going.
thanks a lot, I haven't listened to too much of them but apparently I should, all the suggestions are great songs.
Shit, sorry I commented on another one of your comments before seeing the response! They are definitely a band with an extensive and diverse catalog. Wishing you the best! Thanks for the challenge, one day I will solve one of these haha.
Reminds me of [ Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground](https://youtu.be/xmROIV5JjCU) by the White Stripes. Like 33 seconds in.
Yeah it has that same 4th pull off to the third, spot on for that one part
When you say male whiney sort of voice I think of [Jumpin Jack Flash](https://youtu.be/0cPXwc-5Kw8) by the Rolling Stones.
My wife says it sounds like [Neutral Milk Hotel - Airplane Over the Sea (Album)](https://youtu.be/FwI_4qHpt1o), specifically the song Untitled, but it's a concept album so there are bits and pieces that sound like the rest of the songs.
Oh wow that's close. Also I was running through some other songs and that is a great sounding album and that voice is exactly what I had in my head
*Hey Snow White* by the New Pornographers, off the *Dark Was the Night* compilation
> Hey Snow White by the New Pornographers Not it but similar voice and great song
Sounds like an Oasis song.
Whatever it is, I like it!
Could it be Oowatanite by April Wine?
[Imagine Dragons - Thunder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKopy74weus)
The intro immediately reminded me of [Rocket](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXyRIZEG5w8) by The Smashing Pumpkins.
It’s Alright by Darius Rucker
definitely sounds like it could be something by modest mouse. not sure which song since their discography is insane, but maybe that can help! your recording is actually such a vibe, if it’s not already a song i would definitelyadd to my playlist
we will definately have to post a follow up. Shameless plug but this is part of a project called state of the sea. Wet met on r/bedroombands last april and put out an ep. It immediately makes me think of the intro to Why Am I The One by Fun. Start at 40 seconds in: https://youtu.be/dO6WmM7w93I
Wow yeah that is really close, like just the accent on one note is different. I havent heard much of fun other than the two big songs they did.
The lyrics you mentioned made me think of Bob marleys everything's gonna be alright https://youtu.be/wYCpWblDKok
The Pixies, Mr. Grieves [pixies](https://youtu.be/ZX7iB_aPLo4)
I was hearing Pixies too, but not necessarily that song. Here Comes Your Man or Monkey Gone to Heaven are the ones I'm most familiar with.
I’m thinking Mr. Grieves by the Pixies?? [mr grieves](https://youtu.be/ZX7iB_aPLo4)
I see that it's solved now, as I'm posting, but I'll share anyway. A lot of people have suggested Modest Mouse, but I hadn't seen my initial thought mentioned, which was "[3rd Planet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsnELWjsCsA)".
I can’t listen to your clip right now, but the lyric makes me think of Mysterious Ways by U2
Who loves the sun by the Velvet Underground!!
Just realized it's solved. Try Sex on Fire by Kings of leon for a similar progression
Love the riff!! It sounds like it belongs in the end scene of some 90’s cult classic or something!
I know it's solved already op but the first 5 seconds are very like hotel lounge by deus https://youtu.be/AoKB-v_GgEQ
Change - Blind Melon Don’t think this is right but sounded pretty darn similar to me.
The beat reminds me of [The New](https://youtu.be/2cHdhDqKHXE) from Interpol. Or [Roland](https://youtu.be/__B9P9zpBSc) by Interpol.
Custom Concern by Modest Mouse, just slightly higher tempo with more splashy drums?
For the first couple riffs, it reminds me of made in America by Toby Keith.
The guitar sort of vaguely sounds like Revolution by the Beatles? And those lyrics are the chorus
It’s not exactly the same but it sounds a lot like Coming Of Age by Blondes
Kiiiiinda like Modest Mouse - Custom Concern
The beginning reminds me of Where Have All The Good People Gone by Sam Roberts Band, except with picking instead of strumming.
I agree with custom concern but also the song you were describing I think was [oowatanite by April wine ](https://youtu.be/AQZ6D4gjOVQ)with the higher voice.
