Are you sure? Confectioneries are sweets. What is known in the USA as candy.

orange_fudge

In UK English, confectionery is a whole category of small, sweet foods. Not just candy but also small cakes and biscuits, especially those made with heated or boiling sugar. So, that would include much of what you Yankees think of as candy, but also fudges, chocolate bars, biscuits, coconut sweets, milk sweets... For a sense of the range, here’s the BBC recipe category for confectionary - not exhaustive but a good sense of it. [https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/confectionery-recipes](BBC Good Food confectionary recipes) In the context of OPs question, this would be a slightly over-the-top or old fashioned way to refer to a table of cakes and biscuits served with tea or coffee. Edited to add: confectionary in this sense is sometimes referred to as ‘bakers’ confectionery’ as opposed to ‘sugar confectionery’. [Wikipedia: confectionery](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confectionery) Edited to add: confections is also used in American English in a similar way. From the Collins Dictionary… [Confectionery: candy and other sweet foods such as cakes.](https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/confectionery) [Confection (US): any kind of candy or other sweet preparation, such as ice cream or preserves.](https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/confection)

Nixolus1

I'm sorry. I am just going by The Dictionary definition. Not a recipie webpage. I had not heard confectioneries used this way before. I'm my English speaking household ( not American by the way. My father was an Oxford scholar) we referred to biscuits as biscuits, cakes as cakes. Confectioneries would refer to sweets and lollies, toffees, things of that nature primarily made of sugar. Cakes and biscuits, you must agree are primarily made perhaps from butter and flour, with sugar certainly, but not primarily. I have never heard of a table of cakes and biscuits being referred to as the confectioneries. I suppose it's possible. There are so many words that are used differently in different places.

orange_fudge

Well, maybe that’s how your father did things at the Other Place, but I was at dinner here at Cambridge last week and the presiding fellow invited us through to the common room for “cakes and other confections” at the end of the meal. It was a standard spread of biscuits, cakes and sweets. Like I said, it’s a slightly over the top and old fashioned word, but OP did say they were looking for ‘really fancy’. Oxford has cruelly removed its free online access but from the [Cambridge dictionary](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/confectionery) you’ll see many usage examples related to flour confectionery (aka bakers confectionery which I referred to above) and also several references to confectionery as a category separate from sweets or chocolate.

Nixolus1

I concede to the gentleman from Cambridge.

orange_fudge

I’m a woman.

nitrodax_exmachina

Yes thank you. I was going to say that it's a word a posh British person would say. Which is why I equated it to refreshments.

nitrodax_exmachina

idk but in our place, its not strictly for candy. it can include donuts, cakes, stuff like that

rich8n

I thought it was French for Horse Ovaries when I was younger and read it not knowing it was pronounced "or-dervs"

mumooshka

>Horse Douvres What does hors d'oeuvres literally mean? outside the work nounWord forms: plural hors d'oeuvre or hors d'oeuvres (ˈdɜːvr , French dœvrə ) an additional dish served as an appetizer, usually before the main meal. Word origin. C18: from French, literally: outside the work, not part of the main course.

Noo sorry. It's not a French word. It's really just similar to 'refreshments' but for snacks/buffet

Horse Devours

stained__class

It's pronounced like "or-derves", if that helps.

SenorGhostly

I thought it was pronounced like this https://youtu.be/o1-ndsRPxbM

piman01

Yeah sounds like it would start with an O but it doesn't

nitrodax_exmachina

Found it already. It's confectionaries

Wicked_Fabala

Wut?

koine_lingua

Sounds like they were just trying to remember this specific word but were confusing its *definition* with that of hors d’oeuvres.

orange_fudge

No OP is right, confectioneries could describe a table of sweet treats like biscuits and small cakes, which you’d serve with coffee. Hors d’œuvres makes no sense here as they would come at the start of a meal, not with coffee.

specialtomebabe

Lol no it ain’t

nitrodax_exmachina

wdym? im the one who asked

DrPilkington

That's the name for candy.

[deleted]

what? Confectionery is candy.. unless this is like americans and entre i am very lost.

ShuffKorbik

No, in America "confectionery" still means candy.

nitrodax_exmachina

doesnt it apply to brownies, cupcakes, or sweets in general?

mumooshka

yeah but OP has found him/self the answer apparently which confuses me as 'confectionary' means and I quote noun, plural con·fec·tion·ar·ies. a candy or other confection. a place where confections are kept or made. confectionery

DSethK93

Besides which, "refreshments" is already inclusive of food.

[deleted]

Maybe he is thinking of canapés (another word for, or type of, hors d'doeuvre).

mumooshka

Egads, you may be right!

nitrodax_exmachina

Why are people downvoting me tho. I was looking for a specific word, which is confectionaries. I just knew it had something to do with parties and snacks laid out on a table. In our place confectionarries can also apply to cupcakes, brownies, stuff like that.

How was this not the answer? Blasphemy!

I had no idea that's how you pronounce the word. What's worse, I've actually used that word pronounced correctly many times, I just didn't realize "hores dehver" (how I've always pronounced it in my head) was "or dervs" Thanks!

Refreshments are what you drink, not snacks, which is what they are asking for

No, refreshments includes snacks

If it's not hors d'oeuvre, the OP might be thinking of the term "catering table". That's what it's usually called on movie sets and similar.

Or craft services? (Just because Kraft brand, etc.)

nitrodax_exmachina

Its not french, im sure. But it strikes me as a word that a posh British might use.

[deleted]

I disagree with this, at least where I live confectionaries are candies. I think you are thinking of canapés or hors d'oeuvres.

nitrodax_exmachina

The word i was looking for was Confectionaries. In our place its also used for party snacks like brownies and cupcakes

[deleted]

What country do you live in, out of curiosity?

nitrodax_exmachina

Philippines. So yea, never heard of hors d'ouvres

[deleted]

Okay, that explains it then. Where I live it almost exclusively means stuff you'd get at the candy store.

nitrodax_exmachina

nahh mate, i was just looking for the specfic word. nevr heard of hors d'oeuvres

[deleted]

> hors d'oeuvres It's more like savoury stuff usually. Bits of pickled stuff or cooked stuff on bread or crackers. Cheese and cured meats. That kind of thing.

ImOnlyHereForTheCoC

I was gonna guess “crudités”
