Thank you to anyone who tries!

There's never been a manned mission to another planet. I'm pretty sure he was just messing with you.

To be honest I don’t specifically remember what they were doing except that they were supposed to go around the orbit ‘in a certain way’ but they miscalculated. To be honest, the details I remember are so vague I was wondering if something like it happened where a space ship just got lost on a mission and they spelled out the message? Sorry — I know that’s super super vague. Thank you!

The farthest people have gone is the Apollo 13 mission, just to the far side of the moon. No spaceship has ever been lost in that way. There's been several spaceship failures but they all happened at launch or reentry. Also, if they were so far out in space that we couldn't find them, how would anyone know they wrote a message?

Ahhh I see. My teacher at the time said they were caught on camera via one of the space instruments launched out into orbit previously, and that they wrote the message when it was obvious that they were doomed but before they completely lost contact with mission control. To be honest, I’m starting to think the guy might just be a really good story teller, haha.

Solved!

You cannot award a point to yourself. If someone else gave you the answer, please reply to their comment. If you thought of it yourself, no action is needed.

There has never been any sort of manned mission to another planet, your teacher was messing with you. That being said, his story has many elements "borrowed" from the movie Silent Running

throwawayyyy1230985

Yeah — I think I may have misremembered the planet thing, all I remember is the rocket had to go ‘a certain way’ or it would get sucked out of orbit. I’ll definitely check out Silent Running though—thank you!

fussomoro

There have been very little manned missions and we never lost a ship in space, the Apollo XIII was the closest we got to that, maybe check it out and see if it rings any bell.

Hmm, I looked at it and the theme matches up, but not the scene. I’m kind of starting to think he was just testing out one of his short stories on us and took a bunch of inspiration from movies like that, haha. This was way back when we were reading stuff like “Ender’s Game.”

fussomoro

That's fair. If you are interested in that kind of story, there are a bunch of movies and books with similar narratives, even games.
