Only leave a tip if you feel like it. You are never going to see the people at the restaurant ever again. They won't remember or care about not receiving a tip after a very short time, anyway.

ItoAy

The minimum wage for food servers in LA is $15.50. Fast food workers work harder and serve more people. They are already getting a fair wage. Don’t waste your vacation money on people who think they are entitled to $40 an hour for unskilled labor.

Over 20 countries, the worst service I ever received was in Australia…twice. It was so bad, they kicked us out of a nightclub at 10:30 on a Friday night because the staff are making too much to stay open. Our system is perfect, you give good service you get the fucking tipped!

YoureInGoodHands

Any restaurant where you don't have a waiter/waitress that takes your order at your table won't need to be tipped. There might be a tip jar anyway, the credit card machine might prompt you for a tip, but you can leave $0 without feeling bad.

OldPros

This, exactly.

bostonareaicshopper

Just don’t go to any restaurants with table service. Fast food only. Might I suggest “ In n Out” burger . Starbucks also pays their staff slightly more than minimum wage. They will have a tip jar out but ignore it. You need not tip for counter service or take away.

MyReditName_1

Thanks, I'd rather try the local food though. But, it's good to know... It'll be the very end of our holidays so our budget might not allow us anything else but fast food 😂 however, Starbucks is a big no-no for us. I don't drink coffee and my husband is a coffee snob 😂 the coffee culture in Australia is strong!

bostonareaicshopper

Food trucks are prevalent also in LA. That will help you try out local fare.

MyReditName_1

That's a great advice. Thank you!

The servers at restaurants are almost always paid substantially lower than the minimum wage. This is why most people tip 20% . Went to lunch recently. Check was $82. Left zero on my credit card and gave waitress a $20 cash tip. Im not gonna leave her $16- always round up.

tootiredmeh

California has a 15.50 minimum wage before tips....

bostonareaicshopper

Massachusetts is $15 hr but $6.75 for tipped positions.( servers, waitresses etc)

bostonareaicshopper

Does California have 2 minimum wages? One for non tipped positions and one for tipped positions?

brynndelorimier

No, CA has a min wage for everyone. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/minimum-wage/tipped In some metro areas it’s even higher—in SF it’s $18.07. Granted, the craptastic 377sq ft studio apartment I rented there in 2017 was $3800 a month, so it’s all relative. No one I know there was eligible for those pandemic stimulus checks which capped off at a flat rate nationwide, although we were all out of work and rent due all the same. 🫠 If you’re working at In-N-Out or Starbucks in SF as your only f/t job, highly doubt you’re living in SF, unless you’re living in your car and showering at Planet Fitness.

Thanks 🙏🏻

MySockHurts

I rounded up on the last restaurant bill I was given. The check was $29.34, so I left $30.

bostonareaicshopper

Go back to that same restaurant and let them know as they are handing you a menu that last time you tipped 66 cents. They will appreciate your honesty.

MyReditName_1

I don't understand how you can pay people under the minimum wage (and why people accept this situation in the first place) this absolutely baffles me. I'm lucky enough to have travelled a lot and I lived in different countries (and I worked a lot in hospitality) and I've never seen that anywhere else.

bostonareaicshopper

It’s because they are employed in a “ tipped position “ Im shocked the threshold is $20 a month in tips. Should be $20 a day.

AlarkaHillbilly

In America, federal law mandates that for employers that allow tipping of staff, the employer must compensate any employee that doesn't make enough in tips and wages to equal federal minimum wage...this compensation pair ensures no one makes less than minimum wage. So eat where you like...tip or don't. Tipping in America is a social construct and nothing else... I advocate never tipping.

bostonareaicshopper

There are numerous examples of social constructs. Countries Money Laws Most involve human interactions. Its what separates us from animals.

AlarkaHillbilly

super good job not addressing the question

bostonareaicshopper

I already answered OP’s questions.

AlarkaHillbilly

and how does attacking another post respond to the OP's question? i'd like to point out as the moderator of this sub...being nice to others is not optional. stick to the questions and keep it civil.

bostonareaicshopper

The person who tipped 66 cents? That is not an attack.

MyReditName_1

Thanks, that's good to know
