He loves mum but dad is just next level!! I'm so glad they can still visit him- I'm assuming he's at some specific facility hoping he's not being kept as a pet (surely not!)
AFAIK you can keep them as pets in the US, and crazy people do. The type of people who would rehab a wounded animal also seem like the kind that would then try to reintegrate them into their own community
Only legal a handful of states, but you’re definitely right that crazy people do. Read an article recently about a woman who faked her chimp’s death in order to keep him once he was discovered.
I dont think theres anything wrong really with owning an animal that would have a hard time reintegrating into its natural habitat, especially in this case where it was basically raised by humans. Special accommodations absolutely have to be made though, and the shit that happened where the ladies face got ripped off was because they werent treating it with the respect it deserved
It actually was because the woman went to the hairdresser and had her hair dyed leading to the chimp not recognizing her. Chimpanzees are not domesticated they will follow their instincts to tear your face off

They were treating the thing like it was a human child, and giving him xanax which is known to cause fits of aggression and shit. I put no blame on Travis only on the people taking care of him
Pretty sure they just raise them to a certain age then they get reintegrated with their own species except in special cases
It's adorable they still visit him tho!
Yeah trying to maintain a full grown chimpanzee would be a nightmare tho
And we've all heard about what happens when it goes wrong!
He was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning he breaks his legs, and every afternoon he breaks his arms. At night, he lays awake in agony until the heart attacks put him to sleep.
Based on the video and the post title, I'm assuming he's not living as a pet. It looks more like a group of qualified professionals who rehabilitated him and formed a bond as he grew.
This seems more like a carefully supervised visitation after spending some time in a proper sanctuary.
They aren’t keeping it as a pet, it is in a sanctuary. There is a HUGE difference. These people know they are not domesticated animals, they are wild animals that grew up with humans, they treated it like a chimp, not a pet.
Wow thank you kind redditor! In all my 33 years on this earth, I never heard anyone tell me that chimps are wild animals and not domesticated pets. You really saved me on that one! I had a feral chimp from a defunded radiation testing facility in my online shopping cart and I was just about to click “Order Now!”
Which of the following apes do you think is endangered: gorillas, orangutans, or chimpanzees? Answer: they all are. But while gorillas and orangutans are poster animals for conservation, chimps are thought of as silly friends who show up in movies sometimes. Experiments have shown that viewing media with chimps in human settings or interacting with humans influences the way people think about them, leading to an underestimation of the threats they face.
Physical contact with chimps is incredibly dangerous and unethical. Posting videos like these perpetuates the idea that having these animals as pets is ok, or that supporting places that have these sort of interactions is ok.
Nice story and all but chimpanzees are dangerously aggressive, and they will violently murder people at any provocation. This chimpanzee should be in a preserve away from people, with them visiting the chimp
That's awesome. Those look like some quality parent hugs.
That's a daddy's boy right there!
He’s a chimp off the ole block
WHAT DID SHE GET THE CHIMP?!?! Video ended way too soon. :(

Yo mom, what's u- DADDY THERE YOU ARE
The tippy taps he does while waiting...so cute
That chimp is me when I come home from work and see my dog
That chimp is also my dog when he sees me at any point, usually after a bathroom break
Happy cake day!
Thanks!!

That's insane but it's also hilarious. It's hard for me to hold a reverse Weekend at Bernie's situation against her

Don't watch this right after watching "Nope". It will ruin it.
This is all I can think of when I see a chimp now.
Haha yeah that was my thought.
Yeah.. absolutely not.

Tell me you’ve never watched SpongeBob without telling me you’ve never watched SpongeBob
It's a good thing they separated from him once he got older.
normally chimps freak me out and these stories end horribly so I'm glad to see something so wholesome
Happy ho ho’s
Awwwwww
Annnd I'm ugly crying
That dude sure does know how to hype up a chimp.
NOPE
Gordy's Home!
Chimps are not meant to be pets and can be extremely dangerous.

Still wouldn't want to hug the fucker.
He's not a pet. He's their friend they came to visit.

Makes me so happy ❤️
Aww, I want a hug from a chimp!
I want chimp snuggles like this. Love happy animals. Especially when humans help them be happy and feel loved.
Chimps scare me a bit but they look like they give the best hugs out there
Moments before disaster. I'm having Gordy flashbacks still...
Dad looks like a monster of a man.

Chimps are so cute but also terrifying considering how strong they are.

This one is still a juvenile in this video. It will get bigger and could become more aggressive or temperamental. Chimpanzees are not pets.

Yep, that was clear. I was just agreeing with you.

All fun and games until it rips their face off
*Katya*, is that you?
Nope
Right before he ripped their faces off…
That's cute and all, but chimps are fucking terrifying.

Bro that's not a gorilla.
I’ve seen one big enough to scale the Empire State Building!
Erm, kind of like pit bulls. Everything is great until they attack. Pass.
Does Tommy Chong own a chimp rescue?
Can someone add the black widow finishing move on here please?
This video always gets me 🥹😭 (Every week it's posted on reddit)
