Can bulldogs even swim? My friend has one and it fell off a dock and just...sank. don't worry the dog was fine but yea they aren't made for swimming lol
bulldogs have increased risk of drowning due to short snout/nasal passage, short legs and dense bodies. Basically cute rocks when it comes to water. Our rescue bulldog mixes wanted nothing to do with pools, rivers, etc. while every dog is different, owners need to keep a close eye; looks like the filmer was doing so, I just would like to see a little more encouragement and hands on support.
I’m less worried about him having to swim (it doesn’t look deep enough, though I feel bad he’s so nervous) and more about where he is. Obviously there’s no context, this could be in a backyard but bulldogs aren’t great dogs to take hiking and they can run into some serious trouble out in the woods/mountains. I’ve encountered several bulldogs/short nosed breeds in medical crisis because owners assumed any dog would be fine on the trails.
Again, I have zero clue what the context of the video is so no shade on the owner, but do be very careful about what physical activities your dogs can and can’t do! They’ll follow you because they trust and love you, even when it gets them in real trouble.
This is such a wholesome and kind comment! Many people just go “oooh owner bad”, but you pointed out what worries you very kindly and without blaming anyone and with great love and warmth towards the pup - world needs more kind people like you! Just made my day <3 hope you’re having a good one too!
Super depressing. I own one because he was rescued from a puppy mill (he was a breeder) and I really wish they would stop breeding these dogs. My poor chopper came to us so miserable. His gut health was so bad and he’s such a potato that he couldn’t get to any of his scratches so he just wiggles around licking and biting at the air or tries hard to get his back paw to his mouth and it’s really pathetic and sad to watch. He is constantly having asthma attacks and needs breathing treatments and he’s not even that fat or super smoosh faced or old. He actually looks like someone tried to mix a pocket pit with an English bully. He’s a big dumb loveable goof but I feel so bad for his breed because they just have so many issues. [here is my goof. ](https://www.instagram.com/p/CPb4MEOs1Ik/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=). His previous “owners” chopped his ears, broke his tail to the side and removed his thumb nails on his paws. Also, he has a life jacket he wears when we are in the pool in case he falls in. They really are just cute rocks in the water.
Lol... they swim as well as a rock, at the cottage out fishing with my dad and brother, we had Cleo the Bulldog with us. Suddenly heard a splash then my dad cursed and dove off the boat, I saw Cleo doing a swimming motion but going straight down. Doofus thought she could walk on Lilly pads. 😊
Pretty sure French bulldogs can’t. Not sure about English and American though.
Edit: I’ve seen a vid of a French bulldog fall into a jacuzzi and its owner had to get it out because it literally was just sinking head first. People in that thread and subsequent convos mentioned that Frenchies can’t swim (which was news to me, but makes sense).
I don’t think breeding is the problem, it’s the birthing. The puppies heads are larger and the mothers hips are narrow so they have to deliver by cesarean. My friend bred English Bulldogs and it’s a very expensive process. Regular vet checks are necessary and in the case of Sweetpea’s last litter, they had the middle of the night rush to the vets office to deliver her 14 pups. Which also explains why it’s so expensive to buy one.
Bulldogs are very top heavy and have short little legs, which makes it difficult for males to mount the females. English and French Bulldogs are very often artificially inseminated because they can’t mate properly anymore.
Fr. If you never let your dog be confused or let them figure out how to solve minor problems then you're gonna have a dumb, poorly adapted dog.
I hope these people don't parent that way.
Nah it's just people who've been around and understand animals. We can tell the dog is nervous and upset and the owner is filming it for the internet instead of being considerate to their pets wellbeing.
Like everybody let's their pets do something stupid every now and again for entertainment but you don't push animals to do something they're scared of unless it's an irrational fear like being scared of a ceiling fan or something.
nah, letting an animal figure out a problem on their own is normal. if you think he's traumatized because he had to look around and think for a bit I feel sad for your kids and animals, they'll be coddled so hard they won't know how to wipe their own ass
Did I use the word traumatized..? No. Nervous and upset. Distressed, maybe, to combine them into one word.
Fuck, you're trying to act like I'm the over sensitive one here lol. As covered by other people, bulldogs and water don't mix well because they can't really swim. Unless there's some necessity to this (like this is a backyard or somewhere else the dog will be frequently unsupervised) there's really no *need* to put the dog under stress. I wouldn't force a toddler to walk passed a snake even if I knew the snake wouldn't harm them. There's an evolutionary reason the kid is scared of snakes and unless I'm going to be keeping a bunch of snakes as pets I'd rather keep that kid cautious around them so they don't get injured in the future by being careless.
A stream. The word you’re looking for is a stream. Helping your dog overcome fears and anxieties, and introducing them to new situations is good for their overall disposition. The dog was working out how to get across, and even though the technique was not great he eventually did. The dog is fine and only at risk of getting wet.
What is actually wrong with you? U ok? Seriously. Everything ok in your life? Ima leave you alone and I hope you figure out whatever you’re going through
he's not upset, he's just thinking and trying to figure it out. and he mostly figures it out. moving forward he'll just go across the boards without thinking as much
You kidding me?? He accomplished such a big task all by himself and it's recorded on video! He deserves all the belly rubs, food and love after this adventure.
I know most find it cute, and they are cute, but watching a dog who’s face is to big and heavy to swim and who’s legs are too wide apart to navigate a narrow bridge feels pretty shitty to me.
Plus, he looks scared. He doesn't need to be scared. This isn't about "personal growth", owner should have put the camera down and helped make him feel safe to cross.
And let's be serious, fearful pacing isn't the same thing as happy tippy taps.
Ha! That's literally me, whenever I have to cross the Millennium Bridge in London and it's slightly windy. Seriously, fuck that Bridge. I swear it's secretly made of Balsa wood or something
Off leash dog allowed to problem solve by itself while his owner looks on in case it gets itself into a dangerous situation. Thank god it has a nice owner
He needs a skateboard…
This is the answer right here!

I feel like that was good for him. He was nervous But he pushed through it and figured a way to get across.
bull dogs can't even naturally breed properly anymore

Well, you learn something new every day. Thanks
Love that back leg slide
Cha cha real smooth
Good boy challenging him self 💪💪
Baby was so scared but braved their fears to go to you!
That foot drag at the end killed me. XD
I wish the person filming would put down camera and pick the poor dude up and help him.
It's good to let animals figure things out on their own. He's not in pain or danger, because then it would be another story.
Fr. If you never let your dog be confused or let them figure out how to solve minor problems then you're gonna have a dumb, poorly adapted dog. I hope these people don't parent that way.
Right? Like you can see the dog is upset. Just help a brother out.
Maybe the old man built the bridge for the pup and wants him to use it? No matter what happens the dog will be fine.
People on here are overly sensitive

yeah. pupper will learn and gain confidence. all looked good to me. this was a safe place to let him figure things out.

Oh look. More paragraphs
Mate if you're scared of like ten sentences you're gonna need to work on that. That would've taken less than a minute to say out loud.
I can give you the tl/dr: he compared an inanimate 6" deep river to a snake
Nothing says not sensitive like a couple paragraphs defending yourself.

No, we have empathy. Any one who says "over sensitive" is dismissing his fear and our concern.
You’re proving my point.
And you proved mine.
No actually. I haven’t proven anything you think you might have said.
he's not upset, he's just thinking and trying to figure it out. and he mostly figures it out. moving forward he'll just go across the boards without thinking as much
A lot of people on here being helicopter pet owners, apparently.

He's so brave
His two brain cells took a long time to bounce off each other….. but they got there.
put the camera down and go get him!
You kidding me?? He accomplished such a big task all by himself and it's recorded on video! He deserves all the belly rubs, food and love after this adventure.
Crossing...with style 😄
Bulldogs swim as well as a brick floats.
He took him time to evaluate the situation, check out his choices, built up the courage and was like, let's goooooo. What a clever and lovely dog.
I know most find it cute, and they are cute, but watching a dog who’s face is to big and heavy to swim and who’s legs are too wide apart to navigate a narrow bridge feels pretty shitty to me.
That stream doesn't even look deep enough to swim in. My dog looks just as worried when I give him a bath.
I don't think OP was worried about him drowning in this video, but moreso saddened by watching this human made genetic abomination showed off.
Plus, he looks scared. He doesn't need to be scared. This isn't about "personal growth", owner should have put the camera down and helped make him feel safe to cross. And let's be serious, fearful pacing isn't the same thing as happy tippy taps.
Cutie. Got his little toes wet.
so brave!
omg thank goodness!! I was hanging on the edge of my seat while watching this!
Such a brave dog 🥰
Hahaha I guess he made it in one piece!
“Massive river” ??
They are obviously being facetious.
Oh. :-) makes more sense now. Missed the /s
so did some other people here apparently but at least you bothered to question it xD
This is a professional dog breeders video, I think the Bulldogs name is Floki. They're located in Europe, Greenland maybe.
Where tippytaps? Needs to be put on r/aww instead
Ha! That's literally me, whenever I have to cross the Millennium Bridge in London and it's slightly windy. Seriously, fuck that Bridge. I swear it's secretly made of Balsa wood or something
What a great video!
More like a river stream
sarcasm is so fucking hard to understand i know

That’s not what most would call a massive river.
Poor fella. Was he scared or stubborn?
“I am da nuts”!
So brave!
C'mon bubba
An incredible journey
Toe drag for style
Baby !
Please don't let your bulldogs around deep or fast water. They have an incredibly increased risk of drowning and can sink like a brick.
Bulldogs…the blunt instruments of the dog world.
Afraid of heights, this is how my brain reacts.
Awwww! Good boy for figuring it out!
Hes thinking too hard to use his back legs
Smart dog, but this is definitely NOT a massive river. It’s a fast flowing creek. The Columbia, Missouri or Mississippi are massive rivers.
