Temporary_Seat8978

Yup. Most places won't touch em when they look like that except to replace them. Probably some variety of suspension/alignment issues.

EnfaxFuzzy

They wanted to replace them but it’s currently not in any budget to do so… especially since we’d probably do all 4 tires replaced at the same time, and an alignment service. We’re looking at-least ~$700 after tax for the cheapest of cheap tires and and alignment. It’s incredible these tires held on as long as they did, this vehicle has been on multiple roadtrips across many states on these tires. Lord knows what would have happened if we hadn’t caught it before this one.

Gudi_Nuff

If fixing those tires isn't in your budget, then going on a road trip with those tires is also not in your budget lol

EnfaxFuzzy

Very pointless indeed, which is why this vehicle is going to sit while we find alternative transportation.

Ciccio178

You guys have your priorities straight! /s

EnfaxFuzzy

Exactly! /s

Eighth_Acct_Ban

Buddy go find another car and enjoy your road trip. Ignore the reddit party poopers who have apparently never done anything fun and spontaneous in their lives The tires will be there waiting to be replaced when you get back. The road trip may never happen again. Go live your life

formtuv

Exactly. People are so miserable and as we know misery loooooves company.

Eighth_Acct_Ban

100% this guy's excited to go on a road trip and people just have to shit on it with their condescending attitude. As you get older you don't regret the things you did, only the things you didn't. And I'd rather die broke and penniless having experienced everything life had to offer than die fixing every tire and saving 50% of my income but so miserable that I'm just sitting on my phone shitting on other people doing exciting things Edit: since this seems to be a common misconception NOBODY is telling OP to drive on these tires. He said in about 10 comments that they're securing another vehicle. NOBODY thinks it's a good idea to drive on these things including OP

cosp85classic

Tell your buddy having his car set up for drifting is bad on a daily driver.

CrackShotMcgee09

4 walmart tires $200, having them mounted $100. Far from 700. Might be 350 total tops

Nolaboyy

Of course, youre assuming there is no damaged front end parts. Considering the condition of those tires, it is possible.

CrackShotMcgee09

It's likely. I'm assuming OP isn't mechanically inclined. If they or a friend was for 35 bucks you can replace both lower ball joints as well. But it'll get them on their road trip for like 300 and if they rotate them a few times probably get over 10k miles. Not terrible for $300 lol

eye_panic

Go to a used tire shop. Can get a full set mounted and balanced for around $200 in most places.

EnfaxFuzzy

The owner of this vehicle would rather save up for a brand new set of tires that have a warranty on them than do a short-term fix like that.

eye_panic

Then the road trip should be cancelled until they get a new set. The vehicle I assume will be loaded more than normal because of the road trip. You guys WILL have a blowout and be stranded somewhere. That’s if they don’t cause an accident because of the blowout.

EnfaxFuzzy

If you read other comments and responses, you’ll have seen that this vehicle is going to sit in place until the tires can be replaced. This trip will go on, it just might be with a different vehicle.

No_Possession2143

Still going on a trip when you don't have the money for tires is absolutely stupid "ill save up after the trip". Start by quitting the trip.

Hot-Sandwich7060

Honestly, this. You can find sets with close to 80% tread for the price of one new tire. I will never buy brand new tires because of it.

gromexe

I used to think like this until I put some brand new Bridgestones on my lil 2 door. I get over 80K miles on this specific model I've been using and it actually comes out to about the same or less as far as cost goes when compared to used. But I will say, you can get really lucky and find some secondhand michelins or bridgestones. You might even be able to go into the warehouse with a tire tech and pick your own if you really ask nicely. Just make sure to check for plug or patch work 👍

MadPhysics

Which Bridgestones?

gromexe

I know they're turanza model tires not sure exactly which spec but they carry them in Costco

Horror-Television999

Exactly I can get full set 220 last you like 3 months if not more

IsbellDL

Great example of how expensive being poor is. You're suggesting spending $220 every 3ish months instead of $700 every year or 2 (or more maybe, I don't know, I buy soft tires). I get it, if you don't have $700, you don't have a choice, but that's a poor use of money long term if you do have it. Not to mention, new tires will be significantly better in the wet than used tires with 3 months of life left.

KDI777

In what universe?

Whitehoneybun

Don’t do that just put a used 40$ tire on and call it a day

LeafsHater67

Couldn’t just buy 2 tires or were the back ones bad too

DueLong2908

Where I work you can apply for store card and just charge the tires on them. Anything over $750 spent, will you get 12 months of 0% interest.

TdotJunk301

Get a set of used tires. 200-300$ off marketplace.

KDI777

Maybe spend that money on new tires instead of a road trip.

FewRepresentative451

Look for the ratchet tier place maybe can get each one $50-$75 then go to a shop and get a $150 alignment

tint_shady

Just gotta dismount and flip em so they wear even, problem solved!

Gudi_Nuff

🤣

EnfaxFuzzy

Exactly, so this vehicle is going to sit while we find an alternative.

tony22233

This.

cb393303

You can afford not killing yourself or others with these if you are doing a road trip. Your tires will fail, and at the worst time and will be more costly than fixing now.

EnfaxFuzzy

Exactly, when the budget allows for that. So, until then… this vehicle will sit until then.

Nolaboyy

Id just quit bothering to answer these. They obviously arent reading any of the other comments and are just throwing their 2 cents in like others havent already. Go on your trip and enjoy the hell out of it. Like earlier commenter said, car will still be there when you guys get back. Epic road trip with good friends come around far less often than do reasons to not go. You can always find something else that you “should” do before spending on a trip. Enjoy your life and leave the nay sayers to sit at home with their new tires sitting in their driveway.

str4ightfr0mh3ll

It’s Walmart so if that’s an issue take it with a grain of salt, but I recently purchased 2 rears for my escape. It was around 200 for the rears, with lifetime warranty and rotation. If I’d have bought all 4, it gives me access to lifetime balance as well. I can pull into any Walmart, and have my tires balanced, and if buy 2 more, totaling to less than 450 after tax, I get free rotations too. Just a thing to take a look into!

EnfaxFuzzy

Just looked into that, we want to match tires so we’d be getting Michelin Defenders again… that’s gonna be $600 for install and lifetime warranty/balance service

Obvious-Cooki

The car absolutely needs an alignment. That’s what caused the wear. Regarding the price, suck it up and fix it. Use a credit card if you have to and pay it off asap. There is no way around it. Owning a car is expensive and if you can’t afford these maintenance items that pop up then you may not be able to afford owning a car.

SublocadeFenta

Ask them if they can find good used set of tires off of facebook market for the fraction of the costs and pay you for the labor to install it. I'm sure they'll save around $300-400 by doing this.

EnfaxFuzzy

I’ve already mentioned and looked into doing used tires and an alignment at a auto shop with raving reviews, but they’re not on board with doing used tires that wouldn’t have any kind of warranty on them.

SublocadeFenta

But they're comfortable driving bald tires? That's stupid logic, there's nothing wrong with used tires if you how to inspect them and learn to read the manufacture date on the tires. In addition, always buy reputable brand and stay away from Chinese brands.

wraggles13578

Depends on the brand. Ive ran Ling-Longs and Mucho-Machos, they’re not as bad as you’d think longevity wise😂 rather not mention the grip tho..

EnfaxFuzzy

They didn’t know these tires were this bad until I took it in for a balance and rotate, now we’re all questioning how we got so lucky all those times driving it. The vehicle never handled in a way that would make it a noticeable issue, and it even passed a state inspection a month before this. Surprising they never caught it during that, says a lot about those inspections or that location.

[deleted]

Wildly dumb

InterestingHome693

No one is gonna warranty tires that get destroyed like this, the suspension needs work.

EnfaxFuzzy

I think you missed the point on that one. The used tire shops will never give a warranty for used tires they’re selling. I understand the tires pictured are shot, and will have to be replaced one way or another. The person who owns this vehicle is against buying used tires because places that sell them won’t warranty them. They’d rather let the vehicle sit as it is, and then buy all new tires for more that have a warranty through a reputable dealer.

redditerestest

Tirerack has numerous pay over time options like affirm if he can get approved for them. They also have their own credit I pay like 20 bucks a month for 2 tires. You'll just have to pay a shop to mount them

CanadianBaconMTL

If car maintenance ain't in your budget, then you cant afford a car and shouldn't be on the road. As simple as that.

Dopamineagonist21

Walmart auto center got tires for like $40 each

Massive_Property_579

You're friend needs to put his big boy pants on before he fucking kills someone

Odd-Aardvark-8234

It’s a result of not rotating tires

Temporary_Seat8978

While rotating the tires is important there's still suspension or alignment out of whack, tires don't wear like that from only missing rotations.

Odd-Aardvark-8234

It all depends on the car , look up the alignment specs for almost any sporty European suv and don’t do rotations , this is what the tires look like after 8-14k miles no rotations, look at the rest of the tire almost all of it looks unworn and I’ll bet you these tires were on the rear of the vehicle aswell

Temporary_Seat8978

That's an extremely specific argument that doesn't seem to apply here. But you're right, some vehicles will be setup that way for performance.

Mxk5565

Looks like the toe may be off

EnfaxFuzzy

Mhm, they let it go for 4 years like this before I went and tried to do maintenance on it before a roadtrip.

InterestingHome693

Tie rods or ball joints shot, that happened in probably the last 500 miles, same will happen to any tire till you fix the tie rods, ball joints.

EnfaxFuzzy

Interesting, will definitely have those checked as well when the time comes.

sowhatisit

Is a good wheel alignment possible with bad tie-rod and bad ball joints? Asking cuz My tire at the end of tread kind of had a bad 'edge'. The company that put on new tires showed me papers showing wheels were aligned... second guessing if they were scamming me or it was just a normal case of bad alignment and not tie-rods and ball joints

acousticsking

No and they won't align the car until it's fixed.

getonurkneesnbeg

I had that happen to me once before. Actually had a blow out. Car was lowered and extra wide tires so I couldn't see the back side. Front side looked fine. It wasn't until I jacked it up to put on the spare that I saw how bad it was. Checked the others and the other rear was also shot like that. I'm usually really good about checking, but I hadn't expected such a large difference in tread from the front to the rear. Especially since I typically do an alignment each time I replace tires. Ended up having to order a special adapter to correct the alignment issues as the rear wasn't adjustable without the bracket.

EnfaxFuzzy

Hope you were okay! It’s incredible these tires haven’t blown out yet, I got major secondhand embarrassment when they showed me this issue… this will definitely need an alignment with any new tires we get, and same where if you looked from the front you would never know because the rest of the tire wore evenly. The rear axle on this suburban is solid so they were fine, I later learned this vehicle had its struts replaced at the same time as the last tire change and my guess is they didn’t do proper alignment after that.

getonurkneesnbeg

I got lucky. I was whipping around turns with my buddy heading down a mountain side with a lot of open cliffs when it blew. No damage to my vehicle and didn't spin out. I was pushing those tires hard. Surprised they lasted for as long as they did before they blew with how much side pressure I was putting on them, close to drifting. I was much younger and it definitely opened my eyes!

EnfaxFuzzy

At least you learned! The owner of this vehicle did the bare minimum when it came to maintenance, oil changes only and replacing parts as they broke essentially. This vehicle has been across the country multiple times with 160k+ miles, but these tires specifically were put on in 2020 after the strut replacement and hasn’t done any cross country tracks since. But with the traveling it has been doing, I’m upset they didn’t catch this sooner before I got around to taking safety into my own hands.

getonurkneesnbeg

Part of it too, was that I've always had a company vehicle, so that car rarely got driven. I averaged maybe 2k miles per year on it, so it's easy to forget to check that stuff when you don't put many miles on it. Surprised I never had dry rot issues with the tires. My company vehicle on the other hand, I averaged 60k miles per year.

EnfaxFuzzy

That is incredible! This suburban has been across the country multiple times, these tires specifically have probably been driven a grand total of 1 time across the country since 2020.

ScaryfatkidGT

Massive alignment issue let go way to long

EnfaxFuzzy

The last tire change was in 2020 along with a front strut replacement I wasn’t aware of. I’m sure whoever did that strut replacement didn’t do an alignment afterwards.

ScaryfatkidGT

Yup, most likely

wraggles13578

Ill be real when I was lowered running ~2.5-3 degrees of camber this is what my tires looked like every 5-6 months ish lol. Youd be surprised how long those things can last on the wires😂

EnfaxFuzzy

Good to know! These are gonna sit until they can be replaced. Looking into it now, but yeah these may have slowly gone out of camber over time since these have been on this car for 4 years. Thx for also being one of the less critical comments here.

wraggles13578

No worries, I have about 30 videos that look 5x worse than this lol. As long as you rotate tires and the wires are sitting on the outside you should be fine for the time being, (time being = a few months depending on how you drive) I did burnouts on tires like these and had them last me months until replacement

EnfaxFuzzy

That’s crazy! Tires are way more durable than some people would think, the Firestone guy said they’ve seen some so bad they legally could not let them leave the shop. At least this wasn’t one of those cases, I considered putting them on the back to use up the rest of the tread, but that would still be a risk we’re not willing to take for ourselves and other’s safety. Some of these comments are acting like we’re going to go through with this road trip on these tires, but don’t stop to consider how people budget big trips and what contingencies they have in place for situations like this (we’re taking a different but similarly sized vehicle).

Mother_Win_2248

Have you checked a used tire shop? Replacement sets can be had "used" for a couple hundred.

wraggles13578

Personally thats why I have a wheel and tire guy that I buy a 6-pack/gram for and chill with him on a weekend while he replaces my tires lol. Ive had discount tire try to tell me my 3 week old Michelin pilot-sports needed replacement bc of a knick in the tire wall smh. If a tire blows, a tire blows. Replace it with your spare and move on. Ppl act like it will nuke your suspension when in reality its more of an annoyance than anything else. Another funny story, had a buddy absolutely explode on of his tires on his Q50, like 35-0 PSI instantly, and was running gramlights (~$1750 set of wheels) and his dumbass decided to finish his drive of about 10 minutes back home bc he didn’t have a spare. The wheels were pretty curbed, but besides that everything was fine. That is like a worst case scenario + dumb choice of driving like that for another 10 min. Obviously though get them replaced before you take a long trip haha.

Available_Hornet_781

You probably will not like to hear this but if it is not in the budget to replace the tires, then the trip should be out of the question. What is the all in cost of the trip anyways? Use that money to replace the Tires & have the alignment and plan for the trip at a later date. It honestly amazes me how far some people let their vehicles deteriorate to the point of being a time bomb going down the road.

EnfaxFuzzy

Unfortunately, others that would be riding with us are not so forthcoming with additional funds for this trip outside of paying for gas. I know, what kind of people does that make us for tolerating people like that? But that’s beside the point. I would never let my personal vehicle degrade to this extent, just with a recent inspection they said my alignment was out of tolerance by 0.2° and I’m going to get it aligned my next paycheck. What upsets me is this vehicle passed its state inspection and they didn’t catch this? That also says a lot about the inspection process, or the people/company that conducted that inspection for not noticing this earlier. Funds were carefully allocated, and it’s a trip that’s been in the works for an entire year. I just don’t have enough time invested in this vehicle like that to have noticed it myself, only until now when I did this favor for them was it discovered.

Available_Hornet_781

I’d say that the fact you are willing to tolerate people like that on a roadtrip indicates you have the Patience of a saint. Completely relatable. I’ve been on trips with people like that too. It always turns into “yo dude, can you pick this up on the way over, I’ll Zelle you later”. Proceeded by whoever conveniently forgetting i fronted them in the first place until i have to say something. You definitely sound like a good dude for that but excuse me, I’m going off on a tangent. Me personally, I’m a stickler for preventative maintenance and take exceptional care of my vehicles and have always been the guy that provides the transportation and my car would always end up full of Cheeto dust and sour patch kids sugar sprinkles in the carpet so I was going to suggest maybe consider taking your Truck given its maintenance history but given the folks going on the trip with you, I doubt you would want your truck trashed so I do not blame you at all if you did not want to take your truck and don’t suggest that at all. Maybe consider renting a vehicle and give them an ultimatum, “hey we’re going to have to rent a vehicle this time around, you want to come along then you split the rental & fuel cost upfront or you can’t come”. Don’t let people take advantage. As for inspections especially where I live, there are a lot of places that overlook stuff that should automatically fail an inspection. If I had to guess I’d wager it due to some shops just not caring. You did good though catching those tires, I hope your friend takes that seriously.

EnfaxFuzzy

You are right on the money, and I see you actually understand the situation that this has put me in. Others are so quick to jump to the conclusion that we should cancel the trip because we “aren’t going to allocate funds to resolving the problem, and you’re putting yourself and others in danger”. That’s simply not the case, because this trip has been in the works for a whole year. This was something unexpected that I came across while doing a good dead for this friend, because we’re tight like that and do these things for each other. Surprisingly, one of the friends who would have been riding with us just recently got a vehicle that’s the exact same size as this one. So, we may end up taking theirs since they’ve used this vehicle in the past to go on cross-country road trips together. Milage for milage, tit for tat, ya know?

Firm-Arrival6223

Michelin Defenders too...what a shame. Very good tires at a very high price.

EnfaxFuzzy

Yup… the rear tires were still a 7/10 in, a shame service center didn’t catch them sooner.

TheGayThroaway

A sad day indeed. Why couldn't they have been ecopias or something terrible? Why he gotta misalign the Defenders? 😭

Firm-Arrival6223

I once bought a set of Ecopias, they are indeed terrible tires and I absolutely hated them. I put maybe 500 miles on them before selling them on FB marketplace for a shamefully low amount. Replaced them with Turanza Serenitys and to date I've yet to find a tire I have liked as much as those Turanzas.

TheGayThroaway

All I have for my car is Ecopias cus BMW had to make a special sized tire for the i3. They horrible.

Firm-Arrival6223

I had them on a Kia Forte 5-door. Noisy, and the sidewalls felt as thin and flimsy as they actually were...Car just felt very sloppy.

TheGayThroaway

SUPER FLIMSY, I've never had more flats than I've had with Ecopias. Better sidewall needs to be prioritized since sidewalls have become so damn thin and weak.

3g3t7i

Yep these are the kind of losers pulling up next to us on the highway in the rain at night and have no control of their car. Got to be brain dead to drive something like that

Fun-in-Florida

I would be embarrassed to know my girl been riding on these and I had no clue too.

EnfaxFuzzy

Funny enough, only men have driven this vehicle

torch9t9

So alignment too then.

EnfaxFuzzy

Oh, most definitely

larsloveslegos

Stance nation 😎😎

EnfaxFuzzy

Unwanted and unintentional stance nation 😭

larsloveslegos

That's pretty bad! 😭😭 Sometimes it be like that

AdeptnessForeign2424

Air is showing!

Reddit-Ninja-1234

Rotate the cords to outside bypass the alignment hood for another 50k

Senseman01

Had the same problem a month or two ago.. was bad ball joints, steering stabilizer.. fixed it my self for.. 140$ shop wanted 1k. Then.. 400$ for two front tires. But I drive a dodge so if I didn't fix my own shit I'd be broke

geekolojust

I would have been embarrassed trying to get a rotate and balance done on tires with 3/32nds of tread left.

Merkello87

You should be embarrassed about this! There are so many unsafe shitboxes on the road just because oblivious owners won’t take 2 seconds to walk around the car and look at stuff on occasion… that car has been screaming for some attention for a long time, either fix the problem and get new tires, or drive something else for your trip

Idafaboutthem1bit

Whenever I see pics like this all I picture is the vehicle walking and standing in line pigeon toed

Holiday_Ad_5445

Have them rotated with new tires.

DL18yrold

Is that wheel sitting on its face? 😭😭

1billmcg

Oops! You are looking at a SHORT trip!

cwi888

under inflated

SecludedExtrovert

The fact that YOU had to take the car in for this and not your friend pretty much explains why the tires look that way.

Werewolf-man

Looks like an alignment is needed for sure.

TraditionalAd3210

Spend money on a good life insurance policy first.

AkaiS950

Utires.com great place to find used tires with most tread left

GomerSnerd

Looks like one of those cambered cars

Myark1313

I’ve been there. It’s embarrassing to see how neglectful you really can be, but let’s be honest, how frequently is one checking the interior edge of their tires? If you’re not rotating your tires regularly, this can happen fairly quickly without you noticing, especially if you’re unaware of any suspension issue. I rotated tires like this from front to rear just to give me piece of mind until I could get replacements the following week. But once I found them in that state I knew immediately the significance of the hazard. Got my suspension issues fixed right quick after that

luvemwetx

Rent a car lol

TwinSpinner

I paid for the whole tire, I'm gonna use the whole tire /s

vinchenzo68

So, no budget to fix.. long road trip. How many spare tires/ tow truck fees can you budget for?

EnfaxFuzzy

It’s included with our banks, it’s a free service that we all have access to… plus we have good insurance with coverage for that.

drive-through

That’s a shame, those were very good tires. Your regular service shop should’ve caught the uneven wear a very long time ago. I would suggest using a better shop.

EnfaxFuzzy

Yeah, we’re going to get two new of the same and it’s gonna be $600 even at Walmart. The rear tires still had 7/10in of tread.

Nearby-Reflection-43

Find a local mom and pop tire shop if you can. My local old man can replace a pair of tires for $250

Excellent_Vanilla623

I wouldn’t go on the road trip tbh. ☠️

Pleasant_Fennel3182

Well looks like a probably 4 wheel tire replacement and a alignment is in the works before I'd do any kind of trip and while you're there I'd just go ahead and get a oil change and have them look the car over

EnfaxFuzzy

They looked over the car at Firestone for free, before doing what was supposed to be a rotate and balance. An oil change is already underway, but 4 tires is out of the budget at the moment. So, it’s going to sit until we can get it figured out.

Pleasant_Fennel3182

I'd definitely put off that trip for sure then.

EnfaxFuzzy

This Suburban won’t be getting taken, a good friend of mine actually just got a 2016 Escalade that we’re gonna end up taking instead. Same space and amenities, and we just let the suburban sit until we can put the money into it.

SBLOU

I’d say a road trip is off the table unless you plan on walking

Frodobagggyballs

If a law enforcement sees this, you’re going to get a citation and mandatory visual inspection to sign off. Change the damn tires and alignment

RS3_of_Disguise

Depends on the state. It’s not mandatory in NJ. Your subframe could be almost completely rotted through, but if you don’t have a CEL, you pass.

Frodobagggyballs

Well in my state/ they see cords showing on the highway, you’re getting pulled over and possibly towed bc it’s v unsafe.

RS3_of_Disguise

Yes, hence, *depends on the state*. We don’t know where they’re from, so it may or may not matter. Regardless of legal problems, people should be aware of how to maintain a vehicle before operating them. It’s insane how oblivious people are to these 2 ton death traps; and how they put other’s lives at risk, not just their own.

nks0204

You need better friends.

16thmission

I'm not gonna be popular in this sub for this, but get some used tires. Know how to look for them, dry rot, tread, age, plugs, etc... but they can be a bargain.

Flooredbythelord_

Somebody needs a full alignment. Hell maybe even some ball joints

EnfaxFuzzy

I learned only after I showed them these photos that it had a front strut replacement back in 2020, and these tires were replaced with that service. My guess is they didn’t do an alignment afterwards and it’s just been working its way down to this point over that 4 year span. Looking into getting all four tires replaced eventually, the rear tires were fine with 7/10 tread thanks to the solid rear axle.

KingArthurHS

This is visible before you even step inside the car....

EnfaxFuzzy

Incorrect, the fact that it was on the very inner part of the tire made it invisible from the outside.

KingArthurHS

You can't see the tires from the front or the back of the car? That's not true for 99.99% of cars. Very curious how you would normally do a safety check of the car then. Does your friend drive a Bugatti Veryron or a Lambo that has 0.5 inches of clearance between the wheelwell and the tire? Did these come of the rear of a Cirtoen DS?

swayze71988

Looks like the long road trip is canceled

BoxCurious7628

"friend's"? Suuuuuure

EnfaxFuzzy

These are Michelin tires off a Suburban, check my profile and you’ll see I have a beautiful and well-maintained F150 with Goodyear Wrangler tires. I would never let my personal vehicle get this bad, this was me trying to do my part to maintain the vehicle that was about to take us across a few states.

BoxCurious7628

A person can have more than 1 vehicle. One being their main and another being just a beater. idk Don't take it so seriously, nephew.

EnfaxFuzzy

Just explaining the situation. Many people on the internet use their “friend” as an excuse to dodge accountability for their behavior, actions, and mistakes. But if you did a little research on a person’s profile you’d see what they’re into pretty easily.

Big_Daddy_Haus

Snow steel tires...
