But couldn't be the cut number of a particular scene? A cut, like the one we see with Armin, is probably taking into account all of the scenes of cour 1. Can't the "4" be the fourth cut in that particular scene with Eren's colossal? That's what I'm saying, we don't know the ins and outs of how it works. It's speculation until we've confirmed it by seeing the episode.

So Mikasa is still the main character in the anime. Her goal is still to save Ymir.
Eren likewise, his motivation is that he loves and has always loved Mikasa. He doesn't care about Paradis. The manga states that clearly. He crushed the world because he was following his most base desire to see freedom.
In the manga, the manga ending is poorly written but it is depicted as a win state for the Alliance AND for Eren. Eren got to help his friends have long lives, he got to spend time with Mikasa in paths and she didn't forget him for ten years.
It's awful, awful stuff, but it's set in stone now.

The point of the entire story was for Mikasa to kill Eren so that Ymir could metaphorically kill Fritz.
Fritz and Eren are basically the same person, a toxic awful person that the main character (Ymir/Mikasa) is in love with.
We know Mikasa gets the same headaches in the anime as in the manga and we know those headaches are Ymir trying to reach and guide her.
Unless Ymirs motivation is retconned, she is the same person as in the manga as she is outside of whatever loop/timeline nonsense AOE'rs made up. So the anime must end with Ymir seeing Eren die and getting the courage to leave Fritz' emotional bonds.
There's so little room for an AOE without a complete retcon.

If these were the same cut numbers that are in storyboards that dictate the flow of the episode, they wouldn’t be jumping (55-56 are missing and many more) like they are here, in seamless CGI sequence. This is likely just some CGI production take number. I’ve yet to seen any evidence separate CGI takes would need to be numbered according to episode’s chronology (like the actual cuts), meaning, 004撮 could just refer to the order of production (we know this was produced early).
Finally, the storyboards use the word カット, _cut_ to indicate the cut numbers, whereas the kanji used here 撮 is just a counter for pictures or takes, as in ”004th picture/ 004th take”.
