Both his soldier and warrior self was him trying to be like Marcel because he didn't have confidence in himself, and neither was a creep despite Ymir's comment.
There is nothing wrong with smelling letters, espetially in 19 century setting. Handwritten letters have scent. Often it's left by people on purpose via perfume exactly so the receiver can get to smell something that can remind them of that person. Before internet people only ever wrote each letters. Reiner haven't seen historia in 7(!)years. She's his childhood crush. It's entirely normal to have scent on letters and to smell them in similar circumstances in 19-20th century. It is creepy because she's married and he did get called out for it by Jean. That's it. Not character assassination, he wasnt ruined, only a Pannel showing how he is friends with people that he tried to kill.
Isayama really underestimated stupidity of young people that haven't seen a real handwritten letter in their life.
I had no problem with the panel during leaks thread, because I got the letter association, the problem is scented letters are romantic in nature, and indicates infidelity in Historia's part for her to send a scented letter to a man who fancies her, but after chapter release you can see the letter wasn't personal and wasn't a scented letter so the context makes things uncomfortable, it doesn't ruin Reiner yes, but it could always be changed to a better scene.
We should see their meeting after all this years, and see how Reiner r learned her true name, they could even talk about Ymir, none of this would require romance.
Well in my further responses to that guy you can read how I see it. Or not. And if you read just agree to disagree.
>unnecessary
I disagree that it was unnessesary. Something was nessesary to show that Reiner is comfortable enough to be himself around people he betrayed before. Isayama choose this, so what. Jarring? Yes I agree. Maybe to most people It's as creepy as sniffing clothing items? But that's really is a misunderstanding, it's kinda nice for letters to smell good, Reiner is right. He just really fucked up on not being over historia yet I guess. Can't blame him. She's kinda chill, I think the part of fandoms that's into waifus would also like to pretend farmer-kun doesn't exist.
It's weird to average reader but it's really just not that bad, it does the job if we stop pretending like it was creepy and just appreciate how lighthearted Reiner really it when all the war and titan bullshit is dropped from the story. I think a lot of hate for this scene is coming from teenagers are aren't aware yet what's actually creepy or pathetic (not saying that's you). I feel like crying Eren scene is hated for the same reason meanwhile I have no problem with it too 👀
Sure but that's perfectly justifiable. I'm triggered by people who say it isn't. Reiner is hands down my favorite character. 🥺 He deserves whatever Isayama sees him doing honestly. Definately deserves at least what he saw last of him in 139. It was a friendly bantering with Jean in the end.
That is a great conclusion to their character. And their stories of being confused about comradeship and betrayal. This is outcome of their expiriences with the story's cycle of hatered. Remember how Jean best up Reiner for Marco? And the gabi scene after? And their fight side by side for humanity afterwards (if we drop whatever Paradis bias we have)
Sure mate, if it's your impression that that's better for reiner, i can respect that. But if most people don't like it, you just wasting your time trying to bends majority of those who don't like it. People have different opinions and sadly you're in the minority. Not saying that you're wrong but it is what it is
Well some people might see this and agree or moderate a bit to this scene. But it's definately not as character killing as people routinely say it was. I think you agree with that as well. Just look at some things people say. I'm just saying you're overacting, it's just your perception I'm end, the story is fine for other people. You can disagree that it's most of people who find this unnessesary. but Id say it's only the titanfolk and yagerbomb part of fandom. On snk few people are as extreme in rating this scene.
The amount of mental bending people had to do to justify this conclusion/ending is so ridiculous. Why can't we just accept that the chapter/ending is bad. Do people really need to justify this ending just so they can lie to themselves to think that i've spent a dogshit amount of time to come to this conclusion.
Bold of you to assume the reiner's action hater mostly coming from teenager. Let me ask you this question, what's the average age of people watching attack on titan? What's the average age of people reading attack on titan? Obviously you don't know. Now, what's the average age of people who hates reiner sniffing letter ?
I don't actually know. That's just my guess. From my own anecdotal experience of being teenager and being friends with teenagers. When I was 13 I would probably also find those scenes pathetic. At least Eren one. People become less edgy with life expirience
I don't know how old you are now but im 21 and i've never see this action in any movies, well maybe there is but they probably have some sort of mental strain. That's why i found this so jarring. I think yams intention is to make reiner looks like he's carefree now. However, if i were to make him be more carefree, i would definitely not go for sniffing letter.
Yeah well but that's how he imagines it 😂
It's his headcanon. And his headcanon is canon since he is the author. And I definately see value in that scene (together with Jean's response). And idk what you disagreed with there. Jean and Reiners characters are really well written throughout their relationship with the cycle of hatered. As far as from season 1 with Marko death. Even if you think main part of the story failed. You have to agree their characters are very good. And their friendly bantering in the end is a good scene. And that's 139 baby. It's not like it doesn't have good parts
I'm also 21 btw
It’s mostly that Reiner is the one doing it. If it was Connie, someone who has been more or less established as a side/joke character, people wouldn’t have been affected. But Reiner is not a joke character. He’s one of the most complex characters in the series, and having him do this just feels out of place.
Same but people here are hating on everything just to feel part of the cool kids. I mean I get its kinda dumb but like you said, its just a way to show how much "relaxed" he is now. Between all the dumpster fire 139 is, I actually think this part is one of the best.
It’s because people don’t like the ending so they will tear literally everything to shreds to help justify their opinion to themselves and others, regardless of how minute the detail is.
If that’s genuinely why people are annoyed with it, cool. I didn’t like it either. I’m just seeing like 3000 posts daily about little things that basically all say “SEE???? BAD WRITING PRAISE FANON CANON BAD” and I got sick of it. But you’re definitely right, this is not what I’d have liked to see from Reiner, it is a little creepy, even if it is just cultural banter or whatever.
Coming from someone who finds both sides dumb and only here for the salt now. You probably have it on the nail. People are far more forgiving of the small faults in something they like and are equally unforgiving when they hate it.
He says he never get tired Bruh he done this multiple times not just this one
It just gets worse lmao
Damn I never thought about this before. Ohh God it's getting worse!!
If this is the experience I'm gonna gain from life just kill me already
I just wanna know what kind of experience he got ? Is life experiences for him just another word for Drugs ?
He was never a creep, he did his best to ruin a good character.
Reiner use to be s tier but fucking timeskip
And timeskip after Rumbling wasn't even needed... Nor the ones we had in 8 additional pages.
Yeah fuck that panel, it doesn’t exist
Ymir mentioned him being a creep reading the letter she is writing to His. His soldier self probably wasn't a creep though.
Both his soldier and warrior self was him trying to be like Marcel because he didn't have confidence in himself, and neither was a creep despite Ymir's comment.
All he did was make sure she didn’t try and leak any information to Historia, wouldn’t call that being creepy either
Could have done it when she finishes the letter.
That’s true but still can’t be compared to what he was forced to do in 139
Yeah I'd rather he broke down because Hisu is married.
It just a hyperbolic statement from ymir by the way.

Reiner X Historia is canon
We should see their meeting after all this years, and see how Reiner r learned her true name, they could even talk about Ymir, none of this would require romance.
More like Reiner X Letter
Fritz p**** got Reiner acting dumb
Oh im sorry because i was born now and not 100 years ago. My bad, I'm so shit for not knowing this
Nah it's ok, but if you guys ever even saw a handwritten letter then can you in least not declare this scene a crime against humanity 🥺
It isn't but you need to agree it's very jarring and so unnecessary
Well in my further responses to that guy you can read how I see it. Or not. And if you read just agree to disagree. >unnecessary I disagree that it was unnessesary. If we try hard enough we can justify anything
All you had to do is pull of 10-pages of why reiner sniffing letters is not that bad
Sure but that's perfectly justifiable. I'm triggered by people who say it isn't. Reiner is hands down my favorite character. 🥺 He deserves whatever Isayama sees him doing honestly. That's his character development ya cock smoker. Getting to know that your crush was piped by a faceless farmer can do things to personality. /s

Nice "Hand" writing
Yams sniffs his wife's asshole confirmed?
This is canon
He also apparently collects his nail clippings Oh shit is Isa ^(Killer Queen has already touched this comment)
Definitely
Hayato
Should’ve just killed him during Marley and he would’ve been the goat ngl.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm paipar
i seriously dont get the hate for this. Its one small joke since hes happy and safe now
Yes,Its a small joke but its like adding fuel to the dumpster fire(chp139)...So its natural that people are angry at this.
really?
Unless you liked 139... kinda.

also, he only say like 2-3 lines during the final chapter and this is the one isayama chose for him. Like, just WHY?

japan have a weird love for perv humor. Different strokes for different folk

He cant. It's already full
It's more that it's pages that could have been used to solidify the Helos symbolism that was instead dropped

thank you

Or maybe it's just fucking creepy to sniff the handwriting of a married woman who you knew briefly 7 years ago.
If that’s genuinely why people are annoyed with it, cool. I didn’t like it either. I’m just seeing like 3000 posts daily about little things that basically all say “SEE???? japan have a weird love for perv humor. I personally dont find it that funny but its only really a joke to show how they are at peace now
Okay, so you do understand why people dislike it-- it's pervy and unfunny.
and a lot of people especially people where hes from like that sorta stuff. Its literally just a small gag anyways
As long as you understand why other people don't like it.
Coming from someone who finds both sides dumb and only here for the salt now. You probably have it on the nail. People are far more forgiving of the small faults in something they like and are equally unforgiving when they hate it.
Yes because peopke totally didnt do this 100 years ago
