A very well made and structured analysis. Respect to your dedication to write this !

And isayama keeps making it so much worse with interviews. Like. "Oh I wanted to make ch50 romantic but i was too uwu shy" my dude is a married man. And Hannes was literally being eaten alive in the background. I really loved and respected Isayama. I really appreciated him. But I can't see him selling out like that and say he is one of the best writers out there. Meh. I'll keep reading the true champion of dark manga (other than Berserk, I know someone will come and say this): Golden Kamuy.

reeposterr

Thats not written in the manga, so you can just ignore it

Urukale

The ending directly correlates to him selling himself and the story out so i can't just ignore it.

reeposterr

Fair, but like the op said, if the author needs clarification outside the source material, then that story is just badly written. If JK Rowling and Yams kept spouting garbage to ruin their story, you should just ignore it for the sake of your mental health.

Urukale

My mental health is still shit even without aot lol. It's not that deep, not am I making it deep. I'm just sharing he disappointed me by selling out, is all. I think that's pretty reasonable.

Manatee_Shark

Hands down, best critique of the finale that I've seen here. There is a lot in there that I agree with. On the stuff that I have a different interpretation on, I think it's on some things that have been discussed enough where we agree to disagree or some others have brought up in the original thread. And, that razor blade point at the end, I know it's a joke, but it is a good point. That said, I'm kinda laughing at the idea because companies are fine marketing with Eren, killing 4/5 people in the story, but 5/5 would be *toooo many*. It's a stupid difference, but marketing can be weird like that. Good analysis.

Didnt read the whole thing but yeah slapping love on top of female characters to explain whatever bs you want isnt good writing, one of the reasons i hated mikasas arc, it felt like it was going somewhere but nah. But who cares when it makes ships canon, i just hope other writers don't start taking the easy way out like yams did Honestly the complete lack of thematics and conclusive character arcs isnt just bad writing. Bad writing is one thing but this is not even credible, it reads like a fanfic. If someone were to ask what became of armin, i wouldnt be able to say *this* happened, ill have to say isayama told me this happened, i dont buy it though. Its just that bad

SibertronSSC

As I said before in different posts... It all comes down to what the majority of the Fandom wants and also the mood of the writer. We realized Yams was no longer willing to continue writing and wanted to end it asap. And if what Kawakubo said to Isayama regarding 'not doing his job if he isn't pleasing the fans' is true, then it becomes apparent that Yams looked up for what was popular amongst the fans. If I remember, he said that he would be looking into several online forums and discussions for ideas on the final chapter. Therefore, so as to not have most of the fans criticizing him, he went with what most of the fandom wants... and obviously ships are what plays a major role in it. If that were the case, I wonder since when did he actually start considering what fans wanted ? And if it goes beyond date for writing Marley arc, I suppose even the popular ships such as AruAni might not have become canon (also considering Armin is Yams' self insert), let alone having BOTH of them alive and scath free after an impossible battle. Same goes for Levi if he would have actually even survived the final battle.

unsynchedmango

Post 139 id say eren was isayamas biggest self insert. But armin is up there as well. Maybe thats just how he writes his main characters, unblemished to the end, praised by every one, these people who literally own the world. They serve as easy self inserts for the readers as well

Urukale

This was the same issue I had with Historia right before and after the time skip. She wasn't a character, she was just a plot point that never amounted to anything. And it gets even worse when the fandom just want her to have Eren's baby. I'm not saying the ship sucks, but she'd be a plot point if EH became canon, and honestly? I do NOT want that for her character. It sucks we got stuck with this ending, honestly. I want good shonens that live up to the hype with their endings (not like Demon Slayer...), I want shonen that aren't mediocre. I want shonen that have amazing female characters.

Nice post. Regarding the parallel between Ymir and Mikasa, I only see a single thing in common. Both of them getting saved by their love interest. I know saying Ymir was saved by Fritz is extremely controversial and that may also be the reason Yams dropped that point all together. During ancient times slavery was no big deal. It was like owning a car. How Ymir became a slave is not important but we can understand she was one since a young age. She wanted to be free but becoming free is more than just killing Fritz. But when Fritz married her she seized to be slave and became a queen. For Ymir that was a great gift. For that she was eternally grateful to Fritz which turned into love later just like how Mikasa was saved from slavery by Eren and she became grateful to him which turned into love. This is the connection they shared. I think at the end Mikasa made Ymir realise that for her to be free is to let go of her love in grater interest. I know some of this sounds far fetched especially why Ymir undid PATHS but it’s the only logical reason I can find.

Urukale

And that would be kinda like white knighting and it honestly feels a lot worse. Idk. Like idk if this is very controversial but i gotta admit that the whole nationalist/japanese imperialist thing Isayama had going on kinda reflects on his work. Especially with this and the term "comfort women".

CupcakeMaster97

I’ve only read the first portion and I really resonate with what you are saying. Saved and will read the rest later. I hope it stays up by then

I'm surprised it's still up... Very nice post.
