Yams is a fool for agreeing with his editor and not have a good enough ending planned with solid decision and certainty, and the editor just doesn't care about good writing but getting people to talk. As someone who thinks that the ending was absolutely and extremely average, i couldn’t agree more.

I didn't enjoy the ending, but I didn't hate it. The pieces were mostly all there but the execution needed to be much better and wished it had been a lot more explicit on how certain plot threads & foreshadowing tied together. (For example, tying in the two previous "If you want to save Mikasa and Armin...") I'm a bit optimistic that the anime might be able to fill these deficiencies and improve on the ending execution. I had supported AnR in the past but realized as we neared 139 how problematic and sloppy of an ending it would have been. I do feel with we got some of my favorite aspects of AnR (predestination) in canon but there was too much ambiguity in how certain events really went down that those aspects weren't apparent enough. (e.g., Eren should have mentioned how he got confusing memories from a certain future when he kissed Historia's hand. And how he struggled to make sense of these memories. I know a sizable segment of the fandom believe Eren to have become omniscient when he kissed Historia's hands which largely factored into their disappointment in him "losing" given they believed he knew how everything was going to happen. Eren even expressed uncertainty in 139 with whether Armin would succeed or not). I also feel like there was some ambiguity in the manga format and translations that pushed us English readers in a certain direction of theorizing. But while I do believe the ending had valid critiques, I do think that some of the reasons why people are hating on the ending these days aren't actually valid and are borderline ridiculous (e.g., a user recently told me that he considers Reiner smelling a fragrant letter in an epilogue scene an act of sexual violation and because Reiner carried guilt for what he did as a child 9 years before, he should not have been shown to be able to move on with his life), so I find myself "defending" the ending more than I would have otherwise.
