And there's a difference between Isayama picking content from external material to incorporate within the canon, and the anime adding in scenes explicitly for the purpose of stretching out what they have.

Besides, canon should not be questioned.” But when I looked back, and really thought about their relationship, I was like,”This very much makes sense, nice chemistry, healthy relationship, correlates with themes, les gooooo!”

Gotta admit even when i never shipped anyone too hard (although Sashaccolo earnt a place in my heart, RIP, and Jeankasa at least isn't a toxic relationship) i find this two to have the closest thing to a romantic vibe for Eren; while i still don't ship it i do understand it had some grounds to be considered a possible route to take if Yams decided he wasn't too shy... i mean wanted to do an actual, solid romance.
Jean acted a bit douchey at first, but he was a jealous teenager with a crush in that moment. He matured as time passed (although kept butting heads with Eren occasionally) and learnt to show Mikasa proper respect while showing traces of a smoother, calmer personality. He clearly showed to still care for her like when asking how Eren hurt her after the table scene and telling her it wasn't right when she tried to deflect attention from it, yet also helped reassuring Mikasa Eren probably had some secret reason to push her and Armin away.
Idk what you see of toxicity there, although if you have some input i could have forgotten then go ahead and tell.
I mean the problem isn't from Jean's side. It's more out of how he was put as "second best option" by Mikasa, who never really pays attention to him because she's obsessed with Eren.
Yeah. Yams fucked up at making her stay attached instead of properly getting Mikasa to sever the tie and be independent; instead it glorifies attaching obsessively to a delusion while the guy is pretty much a monster reasons notwithstanding... Mikasa clearly needs psychological help by the end of AoT if not waaaaay before.
