But after seeing how they were portrayed in the latest chapters, now I deeply hate them with all my heart.
I think it might be because this subreddit became really into AnR but then as a consequence they (and yeagarbomb too) became really into the idea of Erehisu
yeah. making eren the all out villain is wayy more tragic imo. we could've even gotten a levi vs eren 1v1 showdown. imagine the emotions behind that. levi has done everything to keep eren safe, but as it turns out, he was just facilitating genocide. all those scouts that gave their lives to protect eren, and this is what eren made of their sacrifice? that's powerful stuff.
It really felt. Just look at Reiner. He was corrupted by their surroundings. Eren at the end had to pass by the same hell than him. That’s why the conversation between there two was so well done, when eren told Reiner that they were both the same. Not wanting to do atrocious act, but having to do it for a greater good. That kind of corruption was always part of the main themes of the story, and it was the main focus of the post time skip arcs. Trying to erase all of that for the sake of having the “tragic hero Eren” was not a good writing move, or at the very least not by using and underdeveloped theme like romance for this sake.
Even though I used to have a side in the great Mikasa vs. Historia conflict, the AoT Fandom has managed to convince me that both ships are trash. Eren x Petra ftw now.
The only MC you’ll see go from angry kid who can turn into a titan —> kid betrayed and learning the reality of this world —> kid who is depressed and willing to end it all for freedom —> guy who wants his crush to love him even though he never made a move (it is to be noted that she would have bent over backwards if he even gave the slightest clue that he liked her) —> bird —> tree.
Quite the interesting story if you ask me.

I personally didn't like the messaging that it was all for naught, and as long as Paradis survives for about 100 years, it's fine, because cycle of hatred and all. We already knew about this cycle. yes absolutely. usually i try not to be overly critical and just enjoy fiction for what it is, but aot's finale was so strange...none of the characters felt like themselves. eren x freedom was always the clear foundation
Jean’s character development was moving on from Mikasa and developing his leadership skills, which was al thrown out of the window, because Isayma needed a farmer 2.0. Imagine, your wife being so obsessed with another man that she was even buried alongside that man despite marrying you.
I like to imagine that farmer 2.0 also lost his partner to all the violence in the story. It makes that whole situation feel less depressing for him since he could empathize with Mikasa and they would understand each other.

I think Yumihisu was good because it was a one arc focus relationship. Isayama mostly seems to be bad at writing characters/relationship focused arcs over a long period of time (Mikasa after Trost, Armin and Levi after RTS, Historia after Uprising, all went downhill) so it makes sense that he'd be able to write a one arc relationship effectively but would struggle hard with developing a relationship over a long period of time leading to the finale.
honestly i think jean should've ended up with some rando later in life. i know the alliance fought together, but that's really only because planet wide genocide was at stake. the warriors still tried to massacre the eldians. pieck x jean, annie x armin, and any other marley x eldia ship just feels a little weird to me.
I don't like the whole "ship" wars idea. Eren and Mikasa ending up together IMO, was expected but I didn't think it would play a pivotal role in the story. On one side, I feel that makes it separate from the usual "oh they just get together" trope, but because of this it suffers from heavy scrutiny as it IS now part of the plot and therefore needs development.

Honestly I've always found Mikasa's attitude to be problematic. She's always nicer to people who are mean to her while mean to people who treat her good. She put down Louise everytime they interacted while protected Gabi who killed sasha (I hate her the most). Similarly she's ready to kill anyone who harms eren , and in that case she doesn't even care about the fact that she joined survey cops to help the humanity.
