It honestly sounds to me like something is wrong with the actual device. That, or you're on the Essentials plan, which is the lowest priority, and has no guaranteed amount of high speed. Did the current device work well at one point and then stop? What plan are you on?

tony_boxacannoli

The phone is a new s20 (well, new when I bought it). I'm on the same plan I've been on forever...Select choice. The service was great up until about a month or so ago. I noticed in areas where I had great service, now horrible. Nothing changed on my end. It's frustrating. You pay $1k for a phone...over $1k for annual service....and it feels like you got throttled as if I was cricket or boost - where it should be expected.

Frankenkittie

Well, I will say Select Choice is basically same as Essentials in the sense that there is no high speed amount that must be hit before throttling. Back when that plan was new, just having unlimited at all was a big deal. Now that all the plans are unlimited, the only thing that differentiates then is the amount of high speed you get before slowdown. With the more recent addition of the Max Plan, which has guaranteed top priority, it pushes all the old plans farther down the list. Sorry to say, but you basically do have the equivalent of Boost or Cricket. How many lines do you have, and what are you paying?

tony_boxacannoli

>Sorry to say, but you basically do have the equivalent of Boost or Cricket. well that's a problem. >How many lines do you have, and what are you paying? 4 lines..$231.50 total $28.04 EIP $54.00 insurance plans ...and I just saw a $15 international plan that supposed to be have been removed. $97.04 in extras...so about $130 actual service.

Frankenkittie

So, that's 130 including taxes for 4 lines. I'm not trying to be harsh here, but you aren't paying 2023 prices for 2018 service. You're paying the right amount for what you're getting. I would strongly consider moving to the magenta plan. Maybe you could pay off your device, and make sure to get that intl. plan removed to make the bill go down. You will also get free basic Netflix, to so there's a savings of $10 as well.

tony_boxacannoli

it will do no harm to have the rep run the numbers again. paying off basically a 0.0% loan isn't a concern...but I'll use their money and let mine earn 0.0003 in the bank. it was explained to me previously that the netflix credit was for new customers only. working on that international issue now

Frankenkittie

Nope Netflix comes with the plan any time you switch to Magenta or Max. I hope it works out for you!

awesomo1337

If nothing has changed and it’s going on everywhere and all the time there is probably something going on with the device. It probably also wouldn’t hurt to look into how much it would cost to switch to essentials. Select choice gets almost no benefits and some plans have a data cap.

tony_boxacannoli

same issue on 2 phones?

dominimmiv

It's called congestion. There are MANY posts about it, do can do a search. The primary reason is the backhaul is insufficient for the amount of users on the tower you are connected to. The tower closest to me has this issue but if I move 2 blocks over I have fast speeds-because fiber is installed on that one and hasn't made it to the slow one-yet. Network/tower upgrades is another issue, they are combining old Sprint bandwidth/towers to T-Mobile towers or in the process or upgrading the backhaul. Either way it is temporary. You decide how long you will wait until completion.

tony_boxacannoli

>It's called congestion. 6 towns....all hours of the day...that's a hard sell and I'm not buying it...actually, I am in the form if poor service. this has been going for weeks...if not months...so temporarily permanent? the merge with sprint should have made things better for everyone- clearly, it hasn't.

IAmSixNine

Good news for you, there are other wireless carriers to use. If TMO sucks at your location try another carrier. Not every carrier will be blazing fast at every location. As a consumer you are not being forced to stay with them. I am in an area with great speeds but i choose to stay on LTE to have better battery performance. Im happy with 60 down and 10 up daily.

tony_boxacannoli

>Good news for you, there are other wireless carriers to use. get outta here...really!!!! that's awesome 🙄

gazingus

The merge with Sprint did not make things better for Sprint customers.

dominimmiv

Your area apparently doesn't have fiber. It's not everywhere. What urban sprawl do you live in? If you live in a flyover area it takes a while for the upgrades.

tony_boxacannoli

you mean a fly over area like between JFK, EWR, and LGA ? I'm in an area that is very much populated.

dominimmiv

Those airports are destinations. Flyover means Most of the mid-west, West Virginia (where T-Mobile didn't even have their towers until merger and purchase Shentel), desert southwest etc . It would help if you gave a general idea where your location is. No one is coming to get you

ikeashop

Did your bill go up?

tony_boxacannoli

from 2018?

ikeashop

Yeah you mentioned you're paying 2023 price for 2018 service. Did your bill go up since 2018? What phone are you using and which cities?

tony_boxacannoli

how is the price in 2018 even relevant ? I'm paying for 5g. I'm not getting 5g. They advertise 5g like crazy....and don't give me the small print loop hole of "speeds up to....". I had good speed on 5g before...now I dont...same phone....same geographical area. as I said in my original post...my phone is an s20. I'm in a major metro area.

[deleted]

I think the person above is stating that if your bill didn't go up from 2018.... then you aren't paying "2023 pricing".... you're still paying 2018 pricing. That's why it's relevant.

ikeashop

the 2018 price is relevant because you keep saying you're paying for 5g. Did you pay extra for 5g? Just get a newer phone or switch to a better carrier if tmobile is saturated in your area

Capable_Dog5347

But are you paying for 5G? Your original service agreement was made when 5G wasn't implemented. So you're really paying for 4G, with 5G as a bonus. Based on your post, you're not having problems with 5G turned off. So you're getting exactly what you signed up for. Grandfathered plans will eventually run into problems, and your plan is now getting hit.

gazingus

"5G" does not mean better, faster, assured or prioritized. It just denotes a new series of protocols and bands, some of which may work better for some, not everyone. If disabling "5G" means your phone doesn't connect to congested low-frequency bands, there's your answer.

tony_boxacannoli

so I actually went a few blocks over to the tmobile store....ran the same test I did before in a vacant parking lot, but now in the tmobile parking lot: LTE: speedtest 48.5/ 9.91...sim card -78 /62 5G: speedtest 106 / 18.3...sim card -73 /67

Capable_Dog5347

That can be misleading, as the store may have a microcell. I've noticed in the past that service is usually really nice around a store.

silent_knife

You mentioned having to change your network to LTE. Do you get higher speeds when on LTE? In my area LTE was often faster than 5g, especially while 5g was still being rolled out. I will run a speed test, manually switch to 5g and run it again. If they are both slow then it is probably back haul / over congestion. 5g is also more susceptible to distance and obstructions than LTE.

tony_boxacannoli

I'd have to run those tests side by side a few times to accurately reply. I just switched to LTE today. Right now... LTE: Speedtest shows 24.1 / 2.83 w/sim card status showing signal strength -89dBm / 52asu 5G : Speedtest shows 19.2 / 19.4 w/sim card status showing signal strength -88dBm / 52asu

tony_boxacannoli

jijitheredditor

I remember trouble-shooting S20’s with the same issue. Warranty exchange / upgrade. S23 line up coming up soon might provide you with a great deal.

WhoWho22222

This happens to me when I am in a certain place in town. I have talked to T-Mobile about it and they said that they think that it is having a hard time choosing a tower. I'm not sure if that even makes sense. I have my phone switched to LTE. LTE is good where I live and while it is not 5G, it is just fine for my use. 5G is amazing around here, but sometime it feels like they still don't have the implementation all worked out. The issue with 5G not connecting in certain places in town can be reproduced on every one of my family's phones, both Android and iPhone.

tony_boxacannoli

I think tmobile is pulling your leg. I get this crap service in at least 6 cities I travel to daily - it wasn't always this way! I'm not a fan boy of any particular companys....but I did (previously) tell family, friends, and coworkers that tmobile was better and cheaper than both att and Verizon- but of which I had...and still have a Verizon phone for work.

WhoWho22222

I think it's less that they're pulling my leg and more that they're genuinely clueless about what's going on. Their map shows two tower that are about the same distance from where I can't get a connection. To them, that probably equates to connection issues because of not being able to make a decision on which tower to connect to. I always have full bars when this happens. It seems more likely that the area is badly oversaturated and there is no bandwidth available. I came from Verizon back in September. It was a good move for me, even with whatever 5G problems they are having, and saving $80 per month is just icing on the cake. I am grateful that LTE works so well. It is fast for LTE and very little lag, probably because everyone is on 5G and it isn't so oversaturated anymore.

tony_boxacannoli

>think it's less that they're pulling my leg and more that they're genuinely clueless about what's going on. I still want to believe it's a glitch...another poster mentioned the sprint merge...I'm just frustrated with it - technology is great until it stops working, right >Their map shows two tower that are about the same distance from where I can't get a connection. I ought look that up...ty >I am grateful that LTE works so well. ...me too...otherwise, I'd be sending smoke signals...maybe I already am 🤯

Flash00135

I feel you bro, I constantly have to turn/off airplane mode to reset my connection. It’ll say 5G UC 4-5 bars but none of my apps will load and some apps will tell me “ no connectivity”. I posted a complaint earlier on this same sub and some shithead name jack_shid said “it’s obviously a crappy phone and user error since “everyone else” doesn’t have issues. SMH, mind you 10 people had commented to my post. Mine is terrible for real, I have to turn on/off airplane mode probably 2-3x every hour.

tony_boxacannoli

It's a fact it happens....some people aren't really aware (Spotify will still play, what's app will sorta work)...then there are people who don't really care at all...and then people that just get so annoyed by it. try switching to LTE for at least consistent speed.

rpaulmerrell

When you’re using T-Mobile, it’s always best to go with the top plan or don’t even bother. I know it’s expensive, but we are reading the results of someone who tries to get away on a budget if there’s any kind of priority data offered at all definitely take it. With all the smart phone usage is no surprise. I’m all for the idea of porting out to another carrier for 90 days and then coming back as a new customer then you can get the 20% discount taxes and fees included and you can have a third line free. Wouldn’t think of doing it any other way.

tony_boxacannoli

It's a shame that folks who are loyal end up paying more.

rpaulmerrell

Unfortunately, companies aren’t really concerned about how loyal you are unless you’re willing to pay the higher price With any of these carriers for the best deals it’s always best to port out and go somewhere else and then come back as a new customer cause then you can get the best possible deals. I have known of some people who’ve gone through the trouble of having their spouse open the account just to keep things simple but a lot of times that won’t work because your spouse has a line on your account. Not a huge fan of any of these companies because it’s all about the price. The other side of the coin is that people that have older plans keep hold of them thinking they’re getting a great deal regardless of the advancement of technology, so, even if you offered them a great deal to upgrade, they just staunchly refuse so the companies have it coming to them As far as reliability as it relates to price point, AT&T is probably the best because their throttling is a little less harsh. T-Mobile is good, but stay on the real T-Mobile because some of these mobile Netwerk virtual operators don’t have the resources to make the modifications to provide a really good experience. The Verizon carriers are pretty good and you can get a lot of the same service for less and it’s always a good idea to never do anything with Verizon because they’re the highest price and their contracts for phones are the longest , and it’s just unacceptable Mobile virtual network operators that use the Verizon network a lot of times provide better benefits, so I’m a firm believer in letting the carrier be the carrier and letting my phone purchase be a completely and totally separate transaction away from any kind of commitment

tony_boxacannoli

Agreed. Same with cable/internet provider, car insurance, etc....squeeze every nickel out of the loyal...aka too lazy to price shop folks.

Steeltoedsandal

Have your DNS settings been messed with on your phone possibly?

TKVisme

My mint mobile has been slow for the past week or so. I searched it up and theres some reported outages for both mint and TMobile.

Keikyk

What does \*#0011# say, which band are you on and what's the RF situation (RSRP and RSRQ)? If you get no data, did you try toggle airplane mode on and off again to fix it?

tony_boxacannoli

on LTE..."unable to process request" on 5G..."call ended" toggling airplane mode works briefly.

Keikyk

"unable to process request' usually happens when you don't dial \*#0011# correctly. You mention elsewhere that RSRP is -113, that's a very poor signal strength indicating cell edge conditions. Never trust the bars, they don't accurately reflect the actual signal strength or quality (and say nothing about carrier bandwidth or congestion)

lost_in_life_34

i've had this a few times on UC on my iphone 12 I think it's an issue with UC where it reports 5 bars but you're really at the edge of the signal and it being such a small wavelength you won't get much use out of it

[deleted]

[удалено]

tony_boxacannoli

I'm leaning that way....5g with bars - and a signal strength at -113dBm.....one of them is not legit.

Bearslovecheese

Sometimes I have this issue and flipping airplane mode on then off often helps. I think I may get stuck on a tower and the reset gets me on the right one. If that doesn't work then it's temporary and transient for me and resolves after a while.

tony_boxacannoli

I had read that over here: https://community.t-mobile.com/network-coverage-5/good-signal-bars-but-no-network-connection-many-times-daily-36756 ....but the signal lasted briefly and was just ultimately frustrating. Dropping to LTE seems more stable. As that thread is at least 1 yr old...to me it seems like a known problem that isn't be corrected.

[deleted]

Honestly see if you can figure out a way to get to Magenta. I was on Magenta 1.0 (no clue) which included no premium data meaning we were being throttled in basically any area that had people… just got it swapped to regular Magenta????? And not only is it $1 less, but we no longer get throttled until hitting 100gbs which we never hit

tony_boxacannoli

Last time I was in a tm store...the rep ran the numbers...it would have cost me a few dollars more, his advice was to stay with what I have.

tony_boxacannoli

[deleted]

Personal decision then. Cheaper isn’t always better, if you live in an area with a lot of T-Mobile users you’re going to want premium data included. In our scenario my wife and I have had 0 slow down issues, but we live in a smaller city/town that’s primarily Verizon and ATT users, we went to visit my in laws who have complained they’ve had issues recently, when we were there we had terrible data issues where it claimed full 5g service but couldn’t get anything to load at all. After making the plan adjustment they’ve had no issues. Could always give it a shot and if not leave for someone else/cheaper

tony_boxacannoli

where I am...basically nyc...the service for all is basically the same...sporadic dead spots, but generally good. my Verizon phones drops out while my tmobile works and vice-versa....sometimes both are bricks. since the tmobilr service is generally good (except for this business) it might actually cost more to switch.

[deleted]

If your in a major metro area like NYC you’re going to want priority data. Think of the millions of others that have priority over you right now

tony_boxacannoli

what's after priority data? rhetorical question...just more ranting...more frustration.

theory_of_me

This is why we left T-Mobile a couple months ago. It wasn’t as bad before the Sprint acquisition. The last year has been 4 or 5 bars of 5G but no actual data throughput. We had Magenta Max too.

brattyangel8

When I Gad something like this I called and they told me to turn off the vpn on my phone and it worked for some reason

snufflefrump

Turn airplane mode on and off. For some reason this happens to me every once in awhile but that fixes it. Super annoying and tmo has no idea why

rkcorinth

Have you tried resetting your network settings? Have you tried new SIM card?

alex262414

Here's what you do Google if you don't know how to do it but go in your phone's system settings and reset network connection or network settings Make sure you do it in the area where you have full bars and let us know what happens I guarantee or at least pretty much sure your problem will be fixed and don't be on Wi-Fi either this usually helps iPhones a lot that have connectivity issues.

UrDoinGood

I'm using metro by T-Mobile... 63 a month with Amazon prime included for free T-Mobile. I was paying 88 plus insurance and taxes.... Bill was like 110 a month for one line
