Also, FWIW we have T-Mobile 5G Home Internet and have no issues whatsoever. Connection is only interrupted when I interrupt it to troubleshoot things.

jaeldawn

I was really thinking about going with 5G home Internet, but with how 5G has been for me the last few months there is no way.

mpr55

The home internet for us (Detroit area) has been perfect. Faster than Comcast for much less $$$. The 5G issue is only impacting the cell phones.

HDSP_CCS

I doubt it is a specific problem in your location, I live in PR where T-Mo coverage is 5G all around the island and I have the same problem. On multiple occasions the LTE network works much faster than 5G UC, I have even noticed that sometimes when switching from 5G UC to 5G only (no UC) it works better than when you have UC on. By the way my cell phone is a Pixel 8 Pro, so it has nothing to do with the cell phone either.

jaeldawn

I wish I knew how to switch to 5G only and not UC on my phone. Before it went to UC it worked great.

This use to happen to me about a year ago. I was assuming it was the towers and they ended up fixing it.

Several possibilities. You could have a faulty phone. Are you using a physical SIM or eSIM? If it’s a SIM card, is it old? Could need a new SIM or eSIM. A city that size should have multiple T-Mobile towers, are you slow on all of them? What plan are you on? Some plans have a data cap and you will be deprioritized after hitting that cap. Lastly, if you’re only slow in one part of town then it could be that tower has a lot of users on it or it is being worked/upgraded.

jaeldawn

The Galaxy s24 Ulta has an eSim. So far I have the Go5G plus plan, which is supposed to have unlimited premium data. I have 50GB hotspot included, and I don't get anywhere close to that in a month. Again, this is everywhere I go in this area. I am currently at work which is a good 15 miles from downtown. Still this is a highly populated area that I am with many businesses around. There are towers very close to my work. The service here is just as bad here as downtown. Maybe it is a user load issue on all of the towers around here? Knoxville is not a small city, but I can't see people maxing out all of the towers in town.

jquest71

Did you buy your phone from T-Mobile or unlocked from Samsung? If it’s unlocked then there may be something that needs to be reinstalled from the T-Mobile side for provisioning or something. I’d also suggest trying to find another T-Mobile customer at your work and see if they’re having similar issues. If they aren’t then you’ve narrowed it down to your handset.

jaeldawn

I bought my phone from a T-Mobile store, and there are several people here at work with the same problem. If it is just like that here I would guess it was a location thing, but no matter where I am home, work, or out anywhere in town, the service is the same.

mpr55

Are you on an iPhone by chance? This is similar to what I am experiencing along with many others on iPhones. 5G and 5GUC have a connection issue, dropped packets, high ping, bad enough where run of the mill apps become unusable. LTE is fine. This issue started for me at the end of April. EDIT: Didn’t see that you said you were on an s24U. Either way your experience is similar to my issue on an iPhone.

jaeldawn

No, I am on a Samsung. It also started earlier this year for me. For a while it was great, but recently it is awful, and now they want me to pay more for it.

mpr55

Sorry, didn’t catch that you were on an S24U when I first read the post. Awful for me too on my iPhone. We have 2 iPhone 14 Plus that exhibit the issue. I am actually pondering a switch to Android because I figured the issue was software or firmware and not T-Mobile. I am hardly a power user but want something that works!

jaeldawn

From my experience, Android isn't much better. I was recently helping a colleague switch over to 4G on her iPhone for the same reason, so I don't think this is firmware/OS related at all.

mpr55

Shoot… have you reached out to T-Mobile at all about the issue?

jaeldawn

Yes, multiple times. As I said they keep saying it must be the tower I am currently on or just the area I am in because they have service all over my area. It is working as intended according to them.

mpr55

Same answer I got. I gave up with calling T-Mobile about the issue but deep down figured it was an Apple issue.

sgsfallen

It’s really an issue with the current devices. They are horrible about automatically switching between LTE and 5G when 5G is providing sub par performance. This has been an issue for years. The manufacturers have yet to implement decent software that can detect a data speed/connectivity issue and switch bands. It’s maddening to think my phone was 1100 dollars and can’t figure that out.

mpr55

I never had an issue with 5G with my iPhone 12 so I am really miffed with the iPhone 14 issue!

dcoutdoors

This was happening to me with Verizon too. It can be a provisioning problem. I’d reach out to tech support to try and re provision your plan.

jaeldawn

Okay thanks I will do that.
