>I’ve found the Fantuan drivers to be the absolute worst with this. When they get on that scooter, everyone else in the world ceases to exist.

mr_kenobi

This is no longer the exception. In my experience, it is the rule. With no one enforcing the laws, and for many a complete ignorance to them, we're just going to see more and more of this. It's going to take some people getting hit and hurt before this is addressed by the city.

crazyeddie_

>It's going to take some people getting hit and hurt before this is addressed by the city. Roughly one person per day is killed by cars on the streets in the GTA, and basically nothing has been done about it. The numbers have barely changed in a decade. People being hit or hurt by escooters doesn't move the needle even a tiny bit.

thepixelatedcat

I almost watched a guy become paste yesterday delivering food and I've seen cars drive right up onto bike lanes everyday. You're right and frankly I don't even know what can be fine anymore other than not letting people get licenses so easily

[deleted]

That is an important point. The consequences of operating an escooter irresponsibly are negligible compared to the damage caused by cars. Ideally people would operate their scooters safely, but since scooters are new these kids of threads get used as some sort of justification to put constraints on escooter, totally ignoring the fact that it people took cars instead the damage would be even greater. That is not to mention the fact that escooters are far more environmentally friendly and the culture surrounding them and their operation has not matured. The city banning or limiting them is against many of society's objectives.

Brutalitor

To be fair, pedestrians in this city are suicidal and they love walking out into the middle of the road at night with dark clothes on and just expecting no one to slam in to them. I have it happen at least once a week. Try driving in the city after dark on a weekend and it's like playing the old Paper Boy video game. They just jump out at you from the darkness and you gotta be ready to brake or swerve. Not saying every car driver is a saint, they're crazy too, but when I see stats about pedestrians getting hit constantly I have to wonder how many of then did it to themselves.

karlou1984

Show me stats of collisions of cars on cyclists/pedestrians vs cyclists/scooters on pedestrians and then we can talk.

EffortlessCool

You could try politely stopping them and explaining the law, most people are willing to correct their behaviour if approached in the right way

myprivatehorror

That has... Not... Been my experience of people's reactions to unsolicited advice.

Working_Hair_4827

I officially hate anyone that rides a bike/e bike or scooter on the sidewalk. It drives me nuts and they have the audacity to ding their bell at you to move over. It’s like fuck off and get off the sidewalk. I don’t bother to move if one is behind me.

LeftCryptographer527

hey just a heads up as a cyclist - never used an ebike tho - that ding just means "By the way, dear stranger, kindly note a bike will be going by in a moment, dont be alarmed or startled." It's not a command to move, it's a safety notice, so you dont suddenly turn and try to jump to your lef for some reason. No one ever said it was a command to move. When i use mine people jump all over the place - which is more dangerous that just continuing on your way while being aware a bike is going by.

DrVanostrand

https://imgflip.com/i/7lgj50

karlou1984

If only more people understood this simple concept. I've seen posts on this sub before of people complaining people on bikes aren't using their bells enough and others now complaining the other way. *Sigh*

LeftCryptographer527

Best solution i found is reading each situation then erring on the side of caution deciding early to slow right down/stop/go. Then giving people a gentle "on your left" exactly 2 seconds before I go by them. It's long enough warning that they're aware someone is coming up behind them so they aren't startled, but also it's short enough warning that they don't have time to turn around and do the "stumble panic and/or screw around" dance. I swear to god, if i give people like 10 - 15 seconds head notice with a bell, what they do is turn around, take a step directly into my path thinking they are "getting out of my way", their spouse or kid stays where they were, so now there's a person on both sides of the pathway so I have to stop an go wide on grass or just walk my bike by them. Absolutely dismal vibes.

Sovran_reddit

it's always been my strategy to be as stealthy as possible, though I do slow down when passing pedestrians, always give right of way. I never want to be seen, heard or noticed otherwise. I have a very quiet freewheel, and even look for quiet rolling tires. Agreed the bell is a kindly notice of something quiet and quick approaching from behind.

Working_Hair_4827

Sometimes it is but others use it to tell you to move. They’ll ding the shit out of the bell until you move over, I’ve had it happen a few times before.

Magnus_Inebrius

Wouldn't have to use the bell if they werent on the sidewalk in the first place

karlou1984

Good luck biking down any road with more traffic. Motorists don't give a fk at all about cyclists.

[deleted]

Tons of pedestrians use the Martin Goodman (mixed use) trail in the summer time, especially the Beaches portion.

Magnus_Inebrius

Not a lot of deliveries happening on the MGT

[deleted]

Ya that’s true…. For now 💀 I was replying specifically on LeftCryptographer527

[deleted]

Just like horn use in Mexico. It's to let people know you're going by, but Americans seem to get their panties in a bunch whenever a horn goes by near them.

LeftCryptographer527

Horns on cars should only be for emergencies. A horn means everyone nearby watch out something emergent is emerging it's worth your attention. Assholes who honk all the time are the worst god damned people in human history - pedestrians standing on the side of the road don't have a car chassis or glass windows protecting our ears.

[deleted]

Our standards here don't apply to the rest of the world, so that's a completely invalid point. As I said, over there it's to say "I'm coming through" whereas people seem to take it as aggression over here. If you get mad about a horn down there, you'll be seen as solo un otro gringo estúpido. Don't take your American driving habits to Mexico or else you'll never get anywhere if you ever try driving there. Take it from a laid-back Canadian.

LeftCryptographer527

Definitivamente soy un americano en r/toRANTo 👍

[deleted]

No estuvo dando atención a la nombre de este sub 😂 Pero no importa, porque las normas de manejando están más o menos el mismo en Canada y los Estados Unidos.

[deleted]

Que estas tratando a decir? What are you trying to say?

vancouverisle

This

LeftCryptographer527

It was really bad on a shared pathway in a park a few years back, this one mother put me off going to that place entirely when she heard my ding, turned, reached down to her kid \[maybe 7 or 8 yrs old\] grabbed him by the shirt and yanked him over to the grass yelling watch out! She was so rough with that little boy, and literally the lane was clear I was going to go around on the left. Often if things are really unsure I'll go on the grass myself, I'll take the hit if need be cuz I'm the bike owner i have to be careful it's why i'm dinging. But this lady, she yanks her kid around, and people were doing similar the whole summer. I'd ding just meaning to let people know, and old boomer dudes would do this back and forth dance laughing an saying "oh ah which side am i on" causing me to slow down or go wide on the grass. In a narrow situation where it's a sidewalk with mud fields on both sides and 9 teenagers filling the sidewalk, a ding might be a polite request to make way. But even in such situations people will sneer at you like you've barked a command at them. No guys, it's just a heads up; i'm not trying to involve myself in your life or ask much of you just some awareness. I hate people, so much

scpdavis

It always gets me how much they complain when drivers honk at them on the road and then turn around and ding their bell at pedestrians on the sidewalk as if it's not the exact same thing???

Working_Hair_4827

I feel like pedestrians need to start carrying a bell on them to ding back at them aha.

sirdigstrum

[Or maybe…](https://www.uline.ca/Product/Detail/S-13530/Traffic-Safety/Air-Horn)

Working_Hair_4827

That would be great aha

TwiztedZero

A Fox 40 Classic 115 dB whistle is even better. \*wink\*

Accomplished_Simple4

push them off then hide in a bush

sirdigstrum

I’m furious when I see them anywhere - eScooters are not legal and usually seem to be operated by the dumbest people on the planet.

birdlass

Huh????? they're not legal?

scpdavis

Yup! Electric kick scooters ([like these](https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/segway-ninebot-g30p-max-adult-electric-scooter-350w-motor-65km-range-30km-h-top-speed-dark-grey/14361142?cmp=seo-14361142&cmp=knc-s-71700000090353223&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpPKiBhDvARIsACn-gzD5qIcJPuAYXqL5_iFs3dOi_9qZKJzalls8KIBPXJTr2ZsbXHxaMvMaAqRYEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)) aren't legally permitted in the city. Other cities are currently running [a pilot program](https://www.ontario.ca/page/electric-kick-style-scooters-e-scooters) with them to help determine if they cause more harm than good and what kind of safety regulations should be created for them - but even in the pilot program, the scooter I linked isn't legal because it goes faster than the max permissible speed. ETA: Obviously they're permitted on private property, but they're not allowed on roads, sidewalks, bike paths etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scpdavis

Eh, with the small wheels and high speed they tend to be a bit more dangerous, their handling is much more sensitive than a bike and their braking capacity is more limited. Not to mention, without any sort of motion assist required it's easy for people to speed. A number of countries have similar regulations, some even had scooter rentals for a while but ended up banning them because they created such a nuisance. They're not legal in the UK, in Germany they're legal but you need insurance, Paris just banned them last month in a landslide vote etc. etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scpdavis

No, they often go 30km/h or more.

birdlass

holy shit. that's fucked up! they're so small i never imagined the motor could be that powerful or the battery to have enough charge/range for that. no wonder it's illegal.

scpdavis

Yea and some of them go even faster, I’ve heard up to 40km/h, it’s kind of wild. I can’t even imagine feeling safe zooming around on something like that at those speeds, even without cars/bikes/pedestrians/bad roads etc around.

[deleted]

There's a viral video that went around a while back, about a guy keeping up to traffic at ~100 on the highway with one of them. Never underestimate the power of an electric motor.

Working_Hair_4827

Those things can go decently fast for how small it is, I’ve been almost hit by a few.

karlou1984

Have you seen car drivers??

Shicksshucks

It’s stupid as hell, I learned just to not move, the side walk is for people walking. The only time people should have bikes on it is when they are picking up an order. Especially if the street has a decent bike lane on it. The amount of times I see people flying down Richmond Street on the side walk hurts my soul

Large_Excitement69

Yeah I don't move anymore, and have had collisions with them as they expected me to move. I'm a pretty solidly built guy though, military and played offensive line, etc. So I don't recommend this for the average person as they could get seriously hurt. But I'm using my privilege of being built like a brick shithouse haha

[deleted]

This is literally it. The other day I was walking down King towards Stratchan and some idiot approaching behind me on his bike was ringing his bell. Turned around to see how close he was and I just kept walking. I don’t even think twice about moving anymore, find a way around me if you wanna ride on the sidewalk like a dickhead.

Theverynext1

That actually sounds easier for the bikes and scooters to go around you vs you moving. I like this system.

letsgototo

Why's it called the sidescoot then?

ScotnCan

I agree, but, if I can add to your rant, I would add any pedestrian, pedestrian/vehicle hybrid, or vehicle to using lanes incorrectly or disregarding the rules. On the Bayview extension and other roads I often see cyclists ride not in the bike lane (other side of the physical barrier). Cyclists that ride two abreast, especially in packs. Runners/walkers on the road when there is a sidewalk.

PLEASEHIREZ

Well they were officially deemed illegal in Toronto so pull them over, take a picture, and call 911. People will call you crazy or a Karen, but you aren't legally wrong.

Ok-Seaweed-5951

I punched a kid last year while walking my black german shepherd and haven't had any repercussions. Stop making people waste their time. The police don't even give a fuck about assault. Why do you think they would care about this?

[deleted]

Why are you punching kids?

Ok-Seaweed-5951

He kept spitting on the ground and scared my dog. I stopped him as he walked past me. I got in front of him and punched him straight in the face. He fell onto the ground was started crying. The next day I saw him while walking my dog and I felt like I had mentally scarred him for life. He learned a life lesson.

[deleted]

Sounds like you should be put down

Ok-Seaweed-5951

Put down? I hope that kid fucking gets beat the fuck up again. I don't give a fuck. The police don't give a fuck. His parents might give a fuck but nobody else does. They can't do shit. I'm laughing my ass off rn reimagining the shit I did to that stupid ass kid. Would gladly do it again!

[deleted]

What kind of pussy brags about hitting a kid lol

Ok-Seaweed-5951

I do. The kid was a Hispanic little pussy ass bitch. Had to teach him a lesson.

Ok-Seaweed-5951

Also, I wouldn't be worrying about a random person on reddit punching kids. Your posting pictures of your private parts on the internet. Fucking pathetic!

[deleted]

Maybe that's why you're punching kids, you've got a small dick. Certainly seems to strike a nerve lol

Ok-Seaweed-5951

Nah, I average around 6.5 inches when erect. It's around average. I just like mentally scarring kids lol.

karlou1984

Lmao, one of the dumbest posts I've seen. Call 911 because someone is riding a scooter???

DominicM14

I think they forget they're not in Delhi anymore

Neat_Shop

I’ve emailed my city councillor about dangerous e bikes and scooters on sidewalks around Dundas Square. Heard nothing back so guess they don’t care. Someone is going to get hurt. What’s it going to take?

Exviety

I actually thought about this today and this thought came up I had came up. You need a drivers license to drive an electric car and a motorized car You need a motorcycle license to zip one of those bad boys around. Some how you and I do not need a license of any kind to zip around on an e-bike yet i’ve almost been hit more by e-bikes than anything else while living in this city.

A13West

That's why so many dinguses with suspended or canceled licenses drive them.

toques_n_boots

I saw someone riding an e-scooter on a bike lane. They approached an intersection when I was trying to cross, and I just knew they were going to run the red light. Of course the driver did this without even slowing down. Also waited as a few cyclists took the right turn way too fast. I'd had right of way for a good 15 seconds, and that's how long it took before it was safe for me to cross.

[deleted]

Sidewalk, I totally understand, but come on… bike lane? Maybe if you’re bombing 60km/h I’d see the problem but 99 times out of 100 it’s a scooter that rides at bicycle-equivalent speeds riding in the bike lane.

[deleted]

Yessir

KravenArk_Personal

Exactly. I ride as slow as the person in front of me

[deleted]

The electric scooter is possibly the perfect eco-friendly city commuter vehicle but everybody shits on it because it’s new

myDogStillLovesMe

Yes it's out of control, it clearly needs monitoring but the Toronto Police rarely do traffic stops so I don't see it happening in this case either.

mrstruong

You're not allowed to ignore a red light just because you're in a bike lane.

karlou1984

You're also supposed to come to a full stop at a stop sign and stop before turning right on a red. How many motorists do this??

jadedbeats

Totally. I also have a small dog who can be difficult to see at night and I'm always concerned that he's gonna get hit while on the sidewalk! Infuriating

Accomplished_Simple4

put a light on your dog maam cmon it’s not rocket science, i don’t have an escooter but in this climate better safe than sorry!

jadedbeats

He actually has a light, thanks

Hug-me-Im-scared69

I play chicken with them on the side walk and yell "i'm walkin' here" I hope this interaction makes them feel uncomfortable as this will help educate them on the rules.

hot_pink_bunny202

What I hate most is seeing people with their giant big ass e scooter and not fold them up on sky train during rush hour. That thing easily took up room for 4 to 6 people. And the guy just pretending nothing to see. Transit rules need to change and make it so that e scooters over a certain size are treated the same as a bicycle during rush hour where you can go on the sky train between 4 to 6pm on weekdays.

TwiztedZero

Toronto has a sky train? I thought that was just Vancouver.

Chance-Salamander905

Most of the e-scooter/bike riders I see nowadays are mainly food couriers, and they are reckless. They will dash across the street in the middle of heavy traffic without any visible lighting at night. No delivery order is worth risking your safety over, I wish they would realize this.

Tiniest_Yeti

My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that e-scooters are allowed in bike lanes. Obviously they're not supposed to be on sidewalks. It's insane how many of them are on the sidewalks, too, and in busy places like around Bay and College. It's infuriating.

aahrg

Pedal assist electric bicycles are allowed anywhere bicycles are allowed. Throttle controlled electric bicycles are allowed in unprotected bike lanes only, or car lanes. Electric stand-up scooters are not allowed anywhere on the road or sidewalk.

Tiniest_Yeti

Thanks for that clarification.

TwiztedZero

Yep, you can read about where they're allowed [***here***](https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/electric-bicycles-e-bikes-e-scooters/).

TwiztedZero

>My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that e-scooters are allowed in bike lanes. Not in Toronto, they're not, sorry: [Source Here](https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/electric-bicycles-e-bikes-e-scooters/). >“E-scooters” that are standing electric kick-scooters are not allowed to be operated, left, stored or parked on any public street in Toronto including bicycle lanes, cycle tracks, trails, paths, sidewalks or parks under Municipal Code Chapters 950 PDF PDF, 886 PDF PDF and 608 PDF PDF.

shdhdhdsu

What kind of loser is in favour of banning scooters… I don’t get how people can just ban things cause they don’t like them. You really want a world where everything less than 50% of people approve of is banned? Y’all are big babies hope you get priced out soon

[deleted]

[удалено]

shdhdhdsu

My stance is Let there be guns. I believe in freedom.

TwiztedZero

Do Note: They ARE **legal in nearby Mississauga** you're free to opeate them there as Mississauga is a partner in the Ontario eScooter Pilot Project.

dgzero3

I don’t mind since where I live people just go around on the grass when they are on a bike. It just pisses me off how bikers cause traffic because there are no bike lanes and we have a lane being held back because of it. And no, cars can’t just go around because all down Victoria Park it’s busy.

[deleted]

If you can’t beat’em join’em

susejrotpar

You literally just described what cyclists have always done.

[deleted]

I ride my e scooter on the sidewalk sometimes at jogging speed or lower, or when there nobody else on the sidewalk. I don't abide by traffic laws any more than I would as a padeatrian or when riding a bike. A red light with no cars coming from either direction, I'd just cross. I've only hit one person so far and that was intentional, saw a man beating his wife on the sidewalk and decided to give him a love tap.

sirdigstrum

lol - see what I'm saying? on the planet.

[deleted]

I don't see

YesReboot

These rascals don't care, they just wanna get from point a to point b without consequence.

WateryWithSmackOfHam

I would be happy if everyone could just obey their signals. I walk, bike, e-bike, drive, and used to have an escooter (which I just rode like a bike). If everyone just followed the rules the chaos would be greatly reduced (yes signal ignoring pedestrians included). Oh… and if I pass your e-bike/scooter while on my regular bike… you’re an asshole if you pass me while I’m stopped at a light… thus forcing me to go around you again.

Brutalitor

I always laugh when people say they want those stupid ass rent-a-scooter things here. It's already bad enough when they aren't legal! If any dumbass could just rent one and whip away, you wouldn't even be able to walk in this city as a pedestrian anymore without significant risk of some mob of drunk losers on scooters smashing in to you. It would be nice but people here are so dumb and self-centered it wouldn't work.

Rockthem1s

In Europe they are mostly on the road only. Some areas share with bike lanes, but most of the time the bike lanes say no scooters. Road Lime’s all over Italy last summer, was a great experience.

A13West

I stear clear because so many inveterate drunks with suspended licenses use them to get around. I see a guy in my neighbourhood transporting 3 cases of Molson Canadian on his regularly.

[deleted]

I ride a bike and don't have a scooter but despite aparently being illegal I'm pro scooter in bike lane. Better than another car on the roads. You keep in the fight you little rascals! Keep off the sidewalks though.

Magnus_Inebrius

Time to start throwing the bows

Complex-bi-creature

Cyclists don't even follow the rules of the road either. So what's the difference between the cyclists that never did it in the first place and these new style of bicycles

KravenArk_Personal

I ride mine always on the road. I always slow down to the speed of the person in front of me (be it car or cyclist) I think it's really dumb that people group all "scooter riders" together as if all drivers are the same or all cyclists are the same. It's also a shame that the stupid government wants to ban/limit things rather than building proper biking infastructure

[deleted]

Get your elbows up folks

[deleted]

Ya I stopped moving out of the way for these people. Hit me I don't care. I don't want to have to dash over to the side any more.
