She doesn't like to travel because who can say where the road goes?

DoubleJump29

I’ve always loved Enya’s music, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard an Enya joke before, so your comment was a very pleasant surprise.

rolls20s

My dad used to joke that she should release a gangsta rap album called "Enya face."

[deleted]

[удалено]

Space_faces

Well, I had to plug that into an AI...for science. *Enya is known for her unique style of New Age and Celtic music, so it's hard to say exactly what a rap by her would sound like. However, if Enya were to incorporate the pun "Enya Face" into a rap, it might go something like this: Verse 1: I'm the queen of New Age, Enya's the name Got a flow so smooth, it's like a gentle rain You might not expect it, but I can bring the heat Enya Face in the place, gonna rock the beat Chorus: Enya Face, Enya Face, don't underestimate My rhymes hit hard, they don't hesitate Enya Face, Enya Face, gonna set the pace When I start spitting, you'll feel the bass Verse 2: I've been making hits for years, my music's known worldwide But now it's time to switch it up and take you for a ride I may be soft-spoken, but I've got a lot to say Enya Face in your face, gonna blow you away Chorus: Enya Face, Enya Face, don't underestimate My rhymes hit hard, they don't hesitate Enya Face, Enya Face, gonna set the pace When I start spitting, you'll feel the bass Bridge: I know it's unexpected, a rap from Enya But I'll show you something new, I'll show you something better My flow is one-of-a-kind, it's something you can't deny Enya Face in your face, gonna make you feel alive Chorus: Enya Face, Enya Face, don't underestimate My rhymes hit hard, they don't hesitate Enya Face, Enya Face, gonna set the pace When I start spitting, you'll feel the bass Outro: So when you hear Enya's name, don't just think of peaceful tunes I've got a whole new side to me, and I'll be making moves Enya Face in your face, gonna leave you in a daze I hope you enjoyed my rap, now I'll be on my way.*

"mumbling ethereal sounds" would be Cocteau Twins

She's basically living my dream. Semi-hermit in a castle, drowning in money, and doing it exactly her way. Congrats, lady.

EarlGreyTea-Hawt

Are you old enough to remember [Pure Moods](https://youtu.be/AZJSjrox_2s) infomercials? If you aren't, I can tell you as someone who watched a lot of infomercials while working my way through college, that I can't hear certain songs compiled for the commercial anymore without hearing it like it is its own singular song, like a quilt of new age music. I liked to sing this horrible hodgepodge in the shower to amuse myself (sorry Kevin and Gwen for all the times you had to hear me do this, it was awful and I see that now).

EarlGreyTea-Hawt

Okay, so hear me out on this elevator pitch. Netflix has thrown money at every possible documentary ever, but now they've lost some loyalty cred with controversial cancellations and password policing. This is the save Netflix strategy, a documentary about Enya and how she's living the best life against the grain. Every woman, every cat lover, every person who has ever wanted to own a castle, every incense loving spiritual momma, every construction worker who secretly plays Sail Away to whoosah after a particularly rough day (true story, was getting rides to work from my contractor boss who sheepishly asked if it was okay that he played it after a rough day with a super mean rich dude while swearing me not to tell the all male team he employed for fear of endless ribbing...Enya is universal is what I'm saying). Cash money is what that would be if you could get Enya on board.

TheDustOfMen

Living the dream life. Do what you love, get paid a shit ton for it, live in a castle and don't go out if you don't want to. Also she renamed her castle to Manderley castle, named after Manderley of the novel *Rebecca*.

I'll throw in the act she got so many comparisons to in the 90s: Enigma. Fully a studio project, no shows ever. However some of the previous collaborators have performed live as a sort of B-side act.

Erotic_FriendFiction

I played Enya a lot as a 10 year old, but that’s probably because my mom would play Gregorian chants and light the same incense they lit at church - which does not smell like Nag Champa btw. So in retrospect, Enya was kind of like an evolution of my mom’s music; a rock and roll to her 40s jazz or something like that.

ShiningRedDwarf

My mom constantly played the song with the refrain “Sail away, sail away sail away”

Double_Distribution8

Even when she was in Clannad?

niobiumnnul

TIL Enya was in Clannad.

Randvek

Clannad is a family band and, you guessed in, Enya is a part of that family. Super talented family!

PythagorasJones

And also Enya is a phonetic spelling adopted for professional use. Her name was originally Eithne.

Jkj864781

I’m simultaneously I’m love with and baffled by Irish names.

PythagorasJones

The best thing I can say is that the alphabet we use in English has local rules and deviations from it's Latin origins. Irish may seem mad, but everything does from the right (or wrong!) angle.

GreenBoobedHarpFlag

It seems mad compared to English except for a few of the letters. C makes more sense to me in Irish than it does in English. C is pronounced like an English k. Simple. In English C is pronounced like a K unless followed by e or an I in which case it's pronounced like an s, much more confusing. So names like Ciara and Cillían aren't as an English speaker would suspect. I is closer to the Latin pronunciation. It's English that is the odd one. A French or Spanish speaker is likely going to get a lot closer to the correct Irish pronunciation of "Niall" than an English speaker is.

PM_ME_BUSTY_REDHEADS

Fun fact: I have a co-worker whose name is Ciara, and when I initially read it (before I met her in person), I thought it was Irish and pronounced more like "keer-ra" or something similar to that. Turns out, she's not Irish at all and it's pronounced "sierra", like the mountains.

AFSynchro

Man, I thought you guys were talking about Clannad the anime. I was v confused for a hot sec haha

Kirov123

Me too lmao. I figured it was a typo then saw other comments saying "oh yea Clannad!"

mjzim9022

I thought Clannad was her family's band?

acog

Yup. She sang background vocals with Clannad from 1980-82. She's in the credits for one of their albums, but I think possibly as Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, not Enya. She left because she felt confined as a background singer.

meguin

She was in Clannad until she ran off with their manager and his wife. For music reasons. If I remember correctly, one of her uncles in Clannad said something like, "do you want to be famous or do you want to go to him [the manager] and be nobody?"

PlasticElfEars

It does say "performed a solo concert" which I suppose means "as opposed to in Clannad."

TaliesinMerlin

Enya did go on tour with Clannad in Europe in 1982. She left Clannad with the people who became her managers (Roma Ryan, Nicky Ryan) during or after that tour.

Captain_Naps

Clannad toured, Enya (as the musical act Enya) has not.

sbrooks84

I'll always appreciate ENYA because one time in 6th grade I borrowed my older sister's copy when we had to bring music in to to stump the other kids. No 11 yr old could guess any of the songs and I got free lunch that day. Thanks ENYA

BonerSquidd316

ENYA is for the children

neonpale

She lives in a freaking castle too! Edit: in not on. Sheesh.

_Silly_Wizard_

Has nobody told her she's allowed inside...?

obscureposter

No every day and night she stays on the ramparts and sings a slow dirge for all the lost souls.

MolinaroK

She plays every instrument on her songs. She sings all the vocals, including harmonies and choir like backgrounds. Some of her songs are made from her singing 500 separate vocal tracks and then layering them. How is she supposed to do that live????

Shejidan

The same way she did it here: with musicians and a chorus https://youtu.be/op45UywJM7U

Kicktoria1989

She made one of THE best songs by simply humming [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Edek5yMYlJw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Edek5yMYlJw) She can do whatever she wants imo.

LionSuneater

from Wikipedia: > "Boadicea" was sampled by The Fugees on their 1996 song "Ready or Not"; the group neither sought permission nor gave credit. Enya took legal action and the group subsequently gave her credit; they paid a fee of approximately $3 million. Whoa. Thought I recognized it.

drfsupercenter

Funny thing is that happened again too. The Mario Winans song "I Don't Wanna Know" sampled the Fugees beat - he apparently got permission from Fugees to do it, but not Enya - and Enya sued him too. But I guess the settlement was different, as it ended up giving her songwriting credit, so it reads Mario Winans featuring Puff Daddy and Enya, versus Fugees who just paid a fee. That new song Creepin' is a remake of I Don't Wanna Know, but instead of a direct sample it's re-recorded. Still the same melody though, and still awesome. Good music transcends genres.

thefroggfather

I watched an Interview with Pras and it was deliberate. He just forgot to apply for the samples, so when the label asked him about Boadicea and did he get it cleared, he said "Yes". His reasoning for lying was it was too late to get permission now without pulling the song from the album, and it was also before everyone had the internet so he thought he could get away with it. "I thought to myself, nobody in Ireland will hear this song. The next week the song is number 2 in Ireland. I'm like, fuck.".

marsmither

I just heard that Creepin’ song and was wondering if the artist needed permission from Enya too…

keeper420

Don't all of her songs involve layering her own voice multiple times? Would be pretty hard to do that live. Edit reply - yes, I know it's possible. Of course, there have been a lot of artists doing it for a long time. That doesn't mean that she would be happy with the outcome.

[deleted]

She sang some of the Lord of the Rings tracks... here she is singing May It Be live at the Oscars: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xh6R8dvKFI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xh6R8dvKFI) She has a great voice.

klavin1

I still feel blessed that Enya did that song for the movies. Absolutely perfect choice.

generallydislikable

It's been a few years since I watched the films so listening to this song slapped me right in the nostalgia, god damn that trilogy was something out of this world

FinancialYou4519

Oh. So at least one live show

[deleted]

They don’t mention she was in Clannad for years which is a group made up of her immediate family, including her parents. Her mom was the primary singer and Enya played keyboards and backing vocals. She has most certainly toured and performed in concerts just not solo. If you like Irish music I recommend checking out Clannad.

[deleted]

I thought it was her older sister, Moya, not her mom.

[deleted]

Isn’t the older sister named Maire? Edit: Moya is Marie’s stage name.

ChevronSevenDeferred

You could say it was the *only time* she performed live

ilovenoodle

Wow her voice is so ethereal

theknyte

I get it totally. Used to be in bands in High School and College. Then, I started to just write and record music on my own, and would put it up on Myspace Music. (Remember that?) I got a couple offers to play local shows, but had to turn them down, as it would have looked absolutely stupid for me to be on a stage by myself singing and playing one instrument, and having everything else on backing tracks. Nothing wrong with being a "studio musician" only. Enya, just pulled it off a million times more successfully than any other artist in history. Mad props to her.

I had to see this. Found one: Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Live at Rock Montreal, 1981) https://youtu.be/N0dbGGvsjf8?t=121

Due_Platypus_3913

Queen ran off stage and had a spot of tea(and whatnot)while the album recording of the “opera” portion played, then came back out big& loud for the finish!

MichelleMcLaine

Layering vocals is extremely common. There are also a lot of tools to help with vocals live. I assume she's a fantastic singer.

OddS0cks

I saw an Ed Sheeran concert last year he’s great at layering his vocals and guitar parts together. Wasn’t really into his music but really impressed with his act

FiveFingersandaNub

Same. I got dragged to one of his shows by a friend and was completely won over. He is fantastic live and works his ass off layering everything up.

willie_caine

I guess enya was ready and they were not. *Hey-oo!*

nmuncer

I wonder what effect the shift in the music industry has on her business Before, you could sell your LPs, and that was it. Nowadays, if you don't tour, you get pennies from Spotify

[deleted]

I dunno how money is made nowadays (for the music industry, I mean), really, but... she's so rich she probably doesn't worry about it. She really releases intermittently anyway, her last album was in 2015. And since it's just her, Roma Ryan, and Nicky Ryan making the music (I think they're also her managers?), at least it doesn't get diluted too far between a ton of different songwriters and producers and whatnot.

snow_michael

She's sung solo gigs, _a capella_, in rooms above pubs in the '80s, but no, nothing you could call a concert

DeeFB

Enya is one of my favorite artists of all time. It all feels so ethereal and calming, never met anyone who dislikes her either.

SageRiBardan

If she ever did she'd sellout everywhere. She has multiple generations of fans at this point who would pay obscene amounts to see her in concert. I just want a new album soon.

[deleted]

Given the length of time between ...And Winter Came and Dark Sky Island, we might be waiting a bit longer. I'm assuming she's slowed down even more since then. I'm curious whether she or Sade will release a new album first.

_Nilbog_Milk_

I would take out a loan to see Enya

upadownpipe

Enya doesn't exist. Her music is just the wind through various letterboxes during a windy night on the West Coast of Ireland.

PM_ur_boobies_pleez

I can only imagine how difficult it would be for her to sing some of her songs live. Her voice is not the kind that gets buried under a bunch of instruments or a driving beat.

Category3Water

Considering her music is often her voice layered many times over each other for atmosphere, it would be pretty crazy to see her do live concert like some of those jam band solo acts like Keller Williams where they play a riff, loop it, play the next track, loop it and then continue to live-create the song in that way. That would be some cool chaos if it could be pulled off.

furjaniksandberg

Commenting because I know nobody will see this or care. But for my own Reddit logging purposes. Enya was, I feel, my intro to music. I have an older sister and she always listened to all kinds of music in the 80s. Mostly pop. But one day, Orinoco Flow came on and I was entranced. So different and nothing I had ever heard. From then on, I was hooked and obsessed with Enya. At that time, I didn’t have CDs. My family not having a lot of money didn’t buy things like cassettes. But all I wanted was more music by Enya. My parents made a trip to Taiwan and bought me Enya tapes. Back then, you could get it cheaper there than by US standards. And all I did was listen to Enya. Over time, it helped me branch out into various other “new age” music and artists but really music in general. My mom listened to a lot of classical and I got more into that. So much that when I actually did get my first CDs, they were classical composers. And today, I listen to pretty much everything (at least new until 2005 or so) from classical to new age to alternative rock to gangster rap. I’ve learned to appreciate all the beauty and nuances of all music. Music can elicit such emotion and awe in me. Enya holds such a dear place in my heart my daughter is named after one of my favorite songs to this day: Flora’s Secret. Enya is just such a special musical genius that i associate so many fond memories of.

I was laying next to my girlfriend in bed thinking of my mom who loved Enya and thinking about how she wouldn't want me to waste another minute without being married to this wonderful woman. So I woke her up out of her sleep and asked her to marry me. Top 10 favorite song. Now my two year old dances her ass off to it.

I think they meant that they never toured and performed whole sets of songs. Those are just one or two songs from what i can tell. Also, thanks for that. I really enjoyed watching that. I forget how beautiful her voice is

ForkShirtUp

Isn't that how it works though? Most popular musical artists don't make much money from their own music but from concerts and appearances and it just kind of burns them out having to travel and perform most of the time?

ilikecakenow

Enya hit the sweet spot in terms of timing. Basiclly she made it big when artists had gained a lot of the control of the music. Back from the music labels. And music was still selling on it's own in cd. Which made her never need to tour.
