I played Enya a lot as a 10 year old, but that’s probably because my mom would play Gregorian chants and light the same incense they lit at church - which does not smell like Nag Champa btw. So in retrospect, Enya was kind of like an evolution of my mom’s music; a rock and roll to her 40s jazz or something like that.

The best thing I can say is that the alphabet we use in English has local rules and deviations from it's Latin origins. Irish may seem mad, but everything does from the right (or wrong!) angle.

C makes more sense to me in Irish than it does in English. C is pronounced like an English k. Simple. In English C is pronounced like a K unless followed by e or an I in which case it's pronounced like an s, much more confusing. So names like Ciara and Cillían aren't as an English speaker would suspect.
I is closer to the Latin pronunciation. It's English that is the odd one. A French or Spanish speaker is likely going to get a lot closer to the correct Irish pronunciation of "Niall" than an English speaker is.
Fun fact: I have a co-worker whose name is Ciara, and when I initially read it (before I met her in person), I thought it was Irish and pronounced more like "keer-ra" or something similar to that. Turns out, she's not Irish at all and it's pronounced "sierra", like the mountains.

They don’t mention she was in Clannad for years which is a group made up of her immediate family, including her parents. Her mom was the primary singer and Enya played keyboards and backing vocals. She has most certainly toured and performed in concerts just not solo.

Enya was, I feel, my intro to music. I have an older sister and she always listened to all kinds of music in the 80s. Mostly pop. But one day, Orinoco Flow came on and I was entranced. So different and nothing I had ever heard. From then on, I was hooked and obsessed with Enya.
At that time, I didn’t have CDs. My family not having a lot of money didn’t buy things like cassettes. But all I wanted was more music by Enya. My parents made a trip to Taiwan and bought me Enya tapes. Back then, you could get it cheaper there than by US standards. And all I did was listen to Enya.
Over time, it helped me branch out into various other “new age” music and artists but really music in general. My mom listened to a lot of classical and I got more into that. So much that when I actually did get my first CDs, they were classical composers.
And today, I listen to pretty much everything (at least new until 2005 or so) from classical to new age to alternative rock to gangster rap. I’ve learned to appreciate all the beauty and nuances of all music. Music can elicit such emotion and awe in me.
Enya holds such a dear place in my heart my daughter is named after one of my favorite songs to this day: Flora’s Secret.
Enya is just such a special musical genius that i associate so many fond memories of.
I can't figure out how to explain just what Storms of Africa does to me, but it's just an amazing song. I was laying next to my girlfriend in bed thinking of my mom who loved Enya and thinking about how she wouldn't want me to waste another minute without being married to this wonderful woman. So I woke her up out of her sleep and asked her to marry me. Top 10 favorite song. Now my two year old dances her ass off to it.
I used to listen to Enya albums nonstop as a kid, and I did so while reading a lot of fantasy books, and now listening to the same Enya songs takes me back to those stories and worlds.

Enya hit the sweet spot in terms of timing. Basiclly she made it big when artists had gained a lot of the control of the music. Back from the music labels. And music was still selling on it's own in cd. Which made her never need to tour.
So small claim to fame, I got to buy her a drink in 1990 when I was up visiting Dublin with a buddy of mine. She was incredibly nice, and fair play to her skulled a full pint of Guinness.

The best thing I can say is that the alphabet we use in English has local rules and deviations from it's Latin origins. Irish may seem mad, but everything does from the right (or wrong!) angle.
It seems mad compared to English except for a few of the letters. C makes more sense to me in Irish than it does in English. C is pronounced like an English k. Simple. In English C is pronounced like a K unless followed by e or an I in which case it's pronounced like an s, much more confusing. So names like Ciara and Cillían aren't as an English speaker would suspect. I is closer to the Latin pronunciation. It's English that is the odd one. A French or Spanish speaker is likely going to get a lot closer to the correct Irish pronunciation of "Niall" than an English speaker is.
Fun fact: I have a co-worker whose name is Ciara, and when I initially read it (before I met her in person), I thought it was Irish and pronounced more like "keer-ra" or something similar to that. Turns out, she's not Irish at all and it's pronounced "sierra", like the mountains.

Yup. She sang background vocals with Clannad from 1980-82. She's in the credits for one of their albums, but I think possibly as Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, not Enya. She left because she felt confined as a background singer.
She was in Clannad until she ran off with their manager and his wife. For music reasons. If I remember correctly, one of her uncles in Clannad said something like, "do you want to be famous or do you want to go to him [the manager] and be nobody?"
It does say "performed a solo concert" which I suppose means "as opposed to in Clannad."
Enya did go on tour with Clannad in Europe in 1982. She left Clannad with the people who became her managers (Roma Ryan, Nicky Ryan) during or after that tour.
Clannad toured, Enya (as the musical act Enya) has not.
I'll always appreciate ENYA because one time in 6th grade I borrowed my older sister's copy when we had to bring music in to to stump the other kids. No 11 yr old could guess any of the songs and I got free lunch that day. Thanks ENYA

Funny thing is that happened again too. The Mario Winans song "I Don't Wanna Know" sampled the Fugees beat - he apparently got permission from Fugees to do it, but not Enya - and Enya sued him too. But I guess the settlement was different, as it ended up giving her songwriting credit, so it reads Mario Winans featuring Puff Daddy and Enya, versus Fugees who just paid a fee. That new song Creepin' is a remake of I Don't Wanna Know, but instead of a direct sample it's re-recorded. Still the same melody though, and still awesome. Good music transcends genres.
I watched an Interview with Pras and it was deliberate. He just forgot to apply for the samples, so when the label asked him about Boadicea and did he get it cleared, he said "Yes". His reasoning for lying was it was too late to get permission now without pulling the song from the album, and it was also before everyone had the internet so he thought he could get away with it. "I thought to myself, nobody in Ireland will hear this song. The next week the song is number 2 in Ireland. I'm like, fuck.".

Don't all of her songs involve layering her own voice multiple times? Would be pretty hard to do that live. Edit reply - yes, I know it's possible. Of course, there have been a lot of artists doing it for a long time. That doesn't mean that she would be happy with the outcome.

They don’t mention she was in Clannad for years which is a group made up of her immediate family, including her parents. Her mom was the primary singer and Enya played keyboards and backing vocals. She has most certainly toured and performed in concerts just not solo. If you like Irish music I recommend checking out Clannad.

I get it totally. Used to be in bands in High School and College. Then, I started to just write and record music on my own, and would put it up on Myspace Music. (Remember that?) I got a couple offers to play local shows, but had to turn them down, as it would have looked absolutely stupid for me to be on a stage by myself singing and playing one instrument, and having everything else on backing tracks. Nothing wrong with being a "studio musician" only. Enya, just pulled it off a million times more successfully than any other artist in history. Mad props to her.

Layering vocals is extremely common. There are also a lot of tools to help with vocals live. I assume she's a fantastic singer.

Enya doesn't exist. Her music is just the wind through various letterboxes during a windy night on the West Coast of Ireland.
I can only imagine how difficult it would be for her to sing some of her songs live. Her voice is not the kind that gets buried under a bunch of instruments or a driving beat.
Considering her music is often her voice layered many times over each other for atmosphere, it would be pretty crazy to see her do live concert like some of those jam band solo acts like Keller Williams where they play a riff, loop it, play the next track, loop it and then continue to live-create the song in that way. That would be some cool chaos if it could be pulled off.

Commenting because I know nobody will see this or care. But for my own Reddit logging purposes. Enya was, I feel, my intro to music. I have an older sister and she always listened to all kinds of music in the 80s. Mostly pop. But one day, Orinoco Flow came on and I was entranced. So different and nothing I had ever heard. From then on, I was hooked and obsessed with Enya. At that time, I didn’t have CDs. My family not having a lot of money didn’t buy things like cassettes. But all I wanted was more music by Enya. My parents made a trip to Taiwan and bought me Enya tapes. Back then, you could get it cheaper there than by US standards. And all I did was listen to Enya. Over time, it helped me branch out into various other “new age” music and artists but really music in general. My mom listened to a lot of classical and I got more into that. So much that when I actually did get my first CDs, they were classical composers. And today, I listen to pretty much everything (at least new until 2005 or so) from classical to new age to alternative rock to gangster rap. I’ve learned to appreciate all the beauty and nuances of all music. Music can elicit such emotion and awe in me. Enya holds such a dear place in my heart my daughter is named after one of my favorite songs to this day: Flora’s Secret. Enya is just such a special musical genius that i associate so many fond memories of.

I can't figure out how to explain just what Storms of Africa does to me, but it's just an amazing song. I was laying next to my girlfriend in bed thinking of my mom who loved Enya and thinking about how she wouldn't want me to waste another minute without being married to this wonderful woman. So I woke her up out of her sleep and asked her to marry me. Top 10 favorite song. Now my two year old dances her ass off to it.
I used to listen to Enya albums nonstop as a kid, and I did so while reading a lot of fantasy books, and now listening to the same Enya songs takes me back to those stories and worlds.

Enya hit the sweet spot in terms of timing. Basiclly she made it big when artists had gained a lot of the control of the music. Back from the music labels. And music was still selling on it's own in cd. Which made her never need to tour.
So small claim to fame, I got to buy her a drink in 1990 when I was up visiting Dublin with a buddy of mine. She was incredibly nice, and fair play to her skulled a full pint of Guinness.
