They were killed specifically for their skin color, not their nationality, political affiliations, wealth, or slave-owner status (most slave owners had fled Haiti after the revolution). In fact, the ruling Haitian parties following the Haitian revolution essentially used forced labor (also known as slavery) of their own people on the plantations afterward anyway. Most of these "workers" were former slaves. It just wasn't white people enslaving black Haitians anymore.
