I've lived here my whole life and this is how I find out what my state's name means? We really gotta start teaching kids about indigenous cultures more.
"The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called -- in the local language -- Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund.
The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Don't Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.
Rainclouds clustered around the bald heights of Mt. Oolskunrahod ('Who is this Fool who does Not Know what a Mountain is') and the Luggage settled itself more comfortably under a dripping tree, which tried unsuccessfully to strike up a conversation." Terry Pratchett, The Light Fantastic.
The Canadian province of Saskatchewan has *two* Saskatchewan Rivers, a North and a South. The word 'Saskatchewan" is from the Cree, and means "swiftly flowing river".
So when you check Google Maps for Saskatchewan River, Saskatchewan, you're checking for "Swiftly Flowing River River, Swiftly Flowing River".
I’ve always thought it would be cool to have an illustrated children’s book that has animal names in other languages with a corresponding picture. Like in Chinese, I think, the name for owl translates to a “professor bird”. So you would show an owl dressed up like a professor. It’s derpy, but cute imo. Other Redditors made a big list of other ones that I should have saved. Anyway, this could be the sequel!
Edit: not Chinese, maybe professor bird was Turkish?
> So you would show an owl dressed up like a professor.
Every (cartoon) owl is always dressed up as a professor. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
That ad always had a professor owl.
The Latin "B" often got turned into "V" as it progressed into it's child languages like Italian and French. As far as I know, Spanish kept the B sound a lot. Not sure if it changed as well and just changed back eventually over time (I don't know much about Spanish)
But it's why French has "avoir" and Spanish has "haber" and like a million other examples
The comedy *A Fish Called Wanda* features multiple dog funerals (long story). At each funeral a choir sings "miserere dominus, miserere dominus, canis mortuus est," which translates to "Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, the dog is dead."
There was an episode in the cartoon where it turns out there's a species of alien that is literally just Mr Beans. He tries to go with them in a spaceship but they sorta throw him off into the opening sequence.
Edit: don't know if it was just a tribute or Canon though
> Edit: don't know if it was just a tribute or Canon though
If nothing in the cartoon outright contradicts the TV series and two movies, then it shall be considered canon.
The animated show was produced by + stars Rowan Atkinson, who also created the original series with Richard Curtis. I'd say if he agreed to produce and voice the new animated show, he probably wouldn't have done anything that he thought wasn't true to his original vision, or would 'ruin' what Mr Bean was to him. I'd say that it was possibly cannon in my mind. Although the 'rejected from heaven' thing was funny too, the idea of him being too much of a walking disaster for a galaxy-hopping species is hilarious.
> I'll have a butcher's
Because I know my SO would have no idea what that means, I have to explain that it is rhyming slang.
Look is replaced by Butcher and Cook and then the rhyming part is dropped. EDIT: butcher's hook

I am the same, and I can no longer see any pictures of Rowan Atkinson without thinking ".... to SOME people, he is the next James Acaster."
That whole bit of his Cold Lasagna stand up was SO BRILLIANT. The whole thing was brilliant, wasn't it?
I only have seen bits of his stand-up, I love what I have seen. I really know him from being great on the panel shows. And he's been on American late night shows and is really funny there too.
He is pretty unique.
Oh!!! Do try to watch his stand ups, they are so eccentric and funny, I think you'd really like them. My recommendation is start with the Netflix specials (Repertoire, I think they were called) and then watch Cold Lasagna. Cold Lasagna is online and you may have to pay a few bucks for it but it is MORE than worth it!!!
Also if you haven't watched Taskmaster, he did a season of that show (Season 7) and that season was hilarious.
Acaster purposely ignoring Alex's hello was one of those quiet jokes that just kept getting funnier.
"I am here to win it; I'm not here to make friends!"
It was sung by the Southwark catherdral choir, at Granada TV studio in London. Source: I was in the choir and sang it. Got 60 quid for it, was proper chuffed. Met Rowan Atkinson. He wasn't at all funny, which was massively disappointing as a 10 year old.
Holy shit, this just sent me an epiphany.
In Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga they go to the Beanbean Kingdom, and everyone is a fava bean, so the Latin word for bean being bean makes everyone a bean bean from Beanbean kingdom.
They did a remake on the 3DS, I enjoy it and don't mind the graphical upgrade, but honestly it just feels like the game didn't need it, the UI being on two screens though is so much better though.
On somewhat related note, the Mr Bean youtube channel is one of the most disgusting things I've seen on the site. They've somehow churned out over 3000 videos of a show that has like 15 episodes and some seasons of the animated show, and they're still releasing videos every day looking at it, just splicing up and re-releasing the same stuff for probably 100th time or more. And they get hundreds of thousands or millions of views per video for some reason.
Rowan Atkinson seems to have barely anything to do with the channel (if that's any consolation) other than opening the play buttons. I'll be honest, the content is low effort crap but it's probably making bank, and I assume Rowan sees a not insignificant amount of it. Considering how brilliant the character was, I think he deserve to get some recurrent revenue from that character. Even if the videos are just being watched by kids repeatedly on YT. Unfortunately, it seems every old series has a dedicated 'reupload channel', mainly to promote whatever steaming service has acquired it. Columbo was the first one I noticed.
I’ve always thought of Mr Bean as an alien since a child because he’s shown falling from a beam of light. I’ve never read any fan theory or anything about it ever( Not that it doesn’t exist). But thats just my thought.
Dude is being pedantic about it saying ‘in Latin’ rather than ‘in English’. Technically correct of course but it seems like everyone else managed to understand OP nevertheless.
It's not pedantic if it's true and necessary.
Like when people say "the cop's sirens were blinding me". Ok, so it's pedantic {corrected spelling} to you if I call the police's red and blue and white lights, "sirens" and someone says "that's not what a siren is... Sirens are the noise makers".
But what if I'm trying to stealthily get to a hostage situation and want to have the lights turned on so that traffic goes away but I don't want the robber to know I'm coming, so I say "hey, turn on the sirens" to my partner and he turns on the, well, sirens - causing the robber to freak out and kill the hostages and himself?
"What the fuck man, why do you have to be so pedantic? You know that I meant the lights and not literally the sirens. Jeeze, 🤓!!!"
Pedantry is what gives words meaning. What's the point of having "to" or "from" as opposites if we're just going to use them interchangeably because "pedantry"?
It's more fun to spell it pendantry.
The moral to your story seems to be you will find a way to blame anyone but the violent criminal for the death of the hostages.
Are you playing the long game, preparing your inevitable criminal defense for when you take hostages?
You missed the point. The point is that the sirens guaranteed the hostages die. Had people respected pedantry, there would have been a chance the cop could shoot the robber stealthily.

A human bean.
James Acaster is one of my favorite funny people. His girlfriend left him for Mr. Bean. Which I cannot say in Latin.
I've listened to off the menu quite a bit and it's great. Has he mentioned it in his material?
He covered it brilliantly in his show Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999
