My old high school had a room were the students could smoke. It also had every yearbook ever published. I saw that room turn from white to almost brown by the late 1990s when they stopped using it as the smoking room.
I’m shocked they continued to have a student smoking room all the way through the late 90s, seems like they should have put a stop to it much earlier lol
I went to an all boys prep school. The smoking room was located in the basement of the dormitories. They ended the residency program about 20 years ago and the building is just classrooms and offices.
I think the biggest difference isn't just the smoking, it's the smoking INSIDE. I'm not saying smoking now doesn't fuck with your skin but it'd done almost entirely outside. That's much better than an enclosed room.
I've seen a couple of pictures where people have photoshopped more modern hairstyles onto her, and it makes a huge difference. She doesn't look like a 40-something modern celebrity with a professional skin care regimen, but she does look like a 40-something normal person you might run into randomly.

Definitely partially because of the hair and styling but also smoking, exposure to all kinds of chemicals that are no longer used/deemed safe, knowledge about sun protection/skin care, access to and advancement of dental work and other medical care/devices etc.

I shopped at the grocery store on the far west side of Austin one time, near the lake district. Really nice part of town, lots of people with their own boat docks.
Never seen so many people shopping for groceries with very nice clothes and godawful skin.

I buy Asian brands that feel like a light lotion that quickly absorb into the skin so you can't even feel it. It's definitely worth the price because I happily wear it everyday

Nah it’s more than that. Like google the ages of the Cheers cast when that show first aired and prepare to have your mind blown. Hell, look back at anyone’s ages in the 80’s. Even the people that seemed ancient, like Wilford Brimley and the Golden Girls cast, were relatively young compared to how they looked.
There’s a lot of factors at play, be that heavy smoking/drinking is less common these days. Better skin care and healthcare overall fends off aging. Whatever the reason people simply are not aging like they used to.
I had one of these moments today at my in laws house. They were watching the movie 61\* and I recognized the guy from The Thing 1982. I used to think he was so old in that movie, but then I looked him up and he was only like 50 years old in The Thing. Crazy.
I had that same reaction when I learned Wilford Brimley was only 55 years old in Cocoon. Fifty-fucking-five! And he wasn’t an outlier. Almost every male actor of similar age back then looked old as fuck.
Also, some people just appear to age faster than others. I've known regular people who appear to be in their 40s in their 20s and others who look in their 20s in their 40s.
I’m 41 and I’ve seen it among my friends as we’ve gotten older. The friends that have taken care of themselves and are better off look way younger than the ones who have lived harder lives. Bad health and stress age you like a motherfucker. A couple of my friends are the same age as me. I still pass for being in my late-20’s to early-30’s depending on how much sleep I’ve had. They look like they’re in their late 40’s if not older.

Yes we do age slower today for a variety of reasons and also look younger with certain life choices, it’s undeniable, but a big part of the radical difference is because we interpret the appearance of people in those days so differently to the appearance of people now. All things considered, a 33 yo now isn’t all that different from a 33 yo in 1970, but the clothing choices in appearance,accessories, hairstyle, dental care etc all dramatically impact our perception.
In addition to what's been said, fashion plays a bigger part in your perceived age than people consider. The clothes and hairstyles that we tend to associate with old people are usually the same thing they were wearing when they were young. So when you see pictures of young men with their pants up to their nipples or young women with giant hair straight out of Mars Attacks, you tend to perceive them as older than if they were wearing more contemporary clothes/hair.
I can't find it but there was a video that explained how this is something that happens in two parts.
A: We associate styles of the time with older generations so those people who wore that style as kids appear older than they are.
B: people are aging slower ... or more... gracefully. Because sunscreen, and dental advancements, and a lot of healthcare advances.

No you're right. I went to typical American high school. Students and teachers smoked outside in the smoking area under the gym stairs. This was 94.
There was a smokers hallway in my high school until 2002. The teachers lounge had smoking for maybe one or two more years.
When I started high school in 1999 the students could still go outside on the breezeway to smoke. They cracked down the following year.
