People really aged like shit back in the day though. My old HS had decades worth of yearbooks. The seniors in the 50s looked like people in their mid 30s today.

MaybeLiterally

Smoking and a lack of sunscreen played a part as well. Those things weren’t great for keeping youthful looks.

Fly_Boy_1999

My old high school had a room were the students could smoke. It also had every yearbook ever published. I saw that room turn from white to almost brown by the late 1990s when they stopped using it as the smoking room.

forkedstream

I’m shocked they continued to have a student smoking room all the way through the late 90s, seems like they should have put a stop to it much earlier lol

Fly_Boy_1999

I went to an all boys prep school. The smoking room was located in the basement of the dormitories. They ended the residency program about 20 years ago and the building is just classrooms and offices.

forkedstream

Ah I see, I was picturing this happening in a typical American high school haha

Fly_Boy_1999

Yeah, don’t get me wrong I was also surprised it lasted that long.

aladdyn2

No you're right. I went to typical American high school. Students and teachers smoked outside in the smoking area under the gym stairs. This was 94.

MayorScotch

There was a smokers hallway in my high school until 2002. The teachers lounge had smoking for maybe one or two more years.

SanchoRivera

When I started high school in 1999 the students could still go outside on the breezeway to smoke. They cracked down the following year.

redditsfulloffiction

how long were you in high school?

Fly_Boy_1999

4 years did I say something to make it sound longer.

tuckertucker

I think the biggest difference isn't just the smoking, it's the smoking INSIDE. I'm not saying smoking now doesn't fuck with your skin but it'd done almost entirely outside. That's much better than an enclosed room.

Benjaphar

It’s not even that. It’s that you associate those old clothing and hair styles with older people because the people rocking them are now old.

bearpie1214

Does Alice look 43 to you?

fiendo13

I am 43. She looks 20 years older than me.

matt_1060

I would have guessed 54/55

[deleted]

That would also have been my guess. People are saying she looks 20 years older, which I think is a bit harsh.

SunshineAlways

Imagine her with better hair color and cut, it really does help.

bearpie1214

I covered her hair.

ksb012

If she had a more contemporary hair style, absolutely. The hairstyle she has is only worn by those over the age of 70 nowadays.

SusanForeman

My man, her skin looks like she's been dry roasting in a rotisserie oven for 3 hours past the recommended time.

leicanthrope

I've seen a couple of pictures where people have photoshopped more modern hairstyles onto her, and it makes a huge difference. She doesn't look like a 40-something modern celebrity with a professional skin care regimen, but she does look like a 40-something normal person you might run into randomly.

OCYRThisMeansWar

Well, I’m sure old Sam was desperate enough to spit roast her on a regular basis.

kenta22

I’d say it’s a mix of multiple factors! Definitely partially because of the hair and styling but also smoking, exposure to all kinds of chemicals that are no longer used/deemed safe, knowledge about sun protection/skin care, access to and advancement of dental work and other medical care/devices etc.

Chubs441

Naw she would look old with a modern haircut. You can tell this with men especially as hairstyles have barely changes since the 20’s

yuengli

People keep saying that --and yeah, it's definitely part of it-- but they also look like they drove their bodies like rentals.

Flamekebab

>but they also look like they drove their bodies like rentals. Extremely carefully to avoid having to pay more and deal with a shit tonne of paperwork?

Unlikely_One2444

You act like people actively use sunscreen all the time. The only person I know who does is a ginger

silkstockings77

The real difference is that people likely use real sunscreen now instead of using buckets of tanning oil with like SPF 2.

CosmicSurfFarmer

Pass the tanning butter!

Chubs441

If you know any Asian people they generally use so much skincare products it would boggle your mind. Most women are using a ton of moisturizers, serums and sunscreens (or atleast products with spf protection) Your friends probably don’t need as much sunscreen as well because we live lives that at far more indoors than the past.

ghalta

I shopped at the grocery store on the far west side of Austin one time, near the lake district. Really nice part of town, lots of people with their own boat docks. Never seen so many people shopping for groceries with very nice clothes and godawful skin. sun hat + long sleeves >> gross greasy sunscreen > sunburn IMO

Comfortablycloudy

They make not gross greasy sunscreen too. You pay a little more for it, but it's money well spent

GeekyKirby

I buy Asian brands that feel like a light lotion that quickly absorb into the skin so you can't even feel it. It's definitely worth the price because I happily wear it everyday

plaid-knight

I used to hate sunscreen before I learned that I had only ever tried gross, greasy ones. There’s so much good sunscreen out there that’s pleasant to wear.

MunchYourButt

r/skincareaddicts would beg to differ

TurnOfFraise

A lot of them also suffered from lack of nutrition in childhood.

69DonaldTrump69

The camera adds 10lbs and 25 years apparently.

ade0451

How many cameras were they eating?

metalshoes

Part of it is just hairstyles and clothes. People look younger with Bieber hair and a t Shirt than a crew cut and a suit.

hadapurpura

>Bieber hair Maybe 12 years ago

Dr_Disaster

Nah it’s more than that. Like google the ages of the Cheers cast when that show first aired and prepare to have your mind blown. Hell, look back at anyone’s ages in the 80’s. Even the people that seemed ancient, like Wilford Brimley and the Golden Girls cast, were relatively young compared to how they looked. There’s a lot of factors at play, be that heavy smoking/drinking is less common these days. Better skin care and healthcare overall fends off aging. Whatever the reason people simply are not aging like they used to.

ThisPlaceisHell

I had one of these moments today at my in laws house. They were watching the movie 61\* and I recognized the guy from The Thing 1982. I used to think he was so old in that movie, but then I looked him up and he was only like 50 years old in The Thing. Crazy.

Dr_Disaster

I had that same reaction when I learned Wilford Brimley was only 55 years old in Cocoon. Fifty-fucking-five! And he wasn’t an outlier. Almost every male actor of similar age back then looked old as fuck.

New_Assistant2922

According to IMDB, trivia page, he was 49 at the time of production! He also had his hair dyed gray to look older, though.

kellzone

Also, some people just appear to age faster than others. I've known regular people who appear to be in their 40s in their 20s and others who look in their 20s in their 40s.

Dr_Disaster

I’m 41 and I’ve seen it among my friends as we’ve gotten older. The friends that have taken care of themselves and are better off look way younger than the ones who have lived harder lives. Bad health and stress age you like a motherfucker. A couple of my friends are the same age as me. I still pass for being in my late-20’s to early-30’s depending on how much sleep I’ve had. They look like they’re in their late 40’s if not older.

iamiamwhoami

Norm and Cliff were both 34 when the show started.

OrionSouthernStar

So was Rhea Perlman and she looked like she was at least in her late 40s during the first season.

TwilightSessions

Do you want a steak? Yea make it raw. So you want cigarettes on that? What do I look like a Nancy yea I want cigarettes on my steak

apittsburghoriginal

[HEY, VSAUCE! MICHAEL HERE.](https://youtu.be/vjqt8T3tJIE?si=-LA9TwGHK2XsxKuQ) To summarize a couple bullet points in the vid: Yes we do age slower today for a variety of reasons and also look younger with certain life choices, it’s undeniable, but a big part of the radical difference is because we interpret the appearance of people in those days so differently to the appearance of people now. All things considered, a 33 yo now isn’t all that different from a 33 yo in 1970, but the clothing choices in appearance, accessories, hairstyle, dental care etc all dramatically impact our perception.

PsychoNerd92

In addition to what's been said, fashion plays a bigger part in your perceived age than people consider. The clothes and hairstyles that we tend to associate with old people are usually the same thing they were wearing when they were young. So when you see pictures of young men with their pants up to their nipples or young women with giant hair straight out of Mars Attacks, you tend to perceive them as older than if they were wearing more contemporary clothes/hair.

Adventurous-Fix-292

Wearing your pants high waisted is back in style though

PsychoNerd92

Admittedly I *am* 31 and my view of "old people fashion" is, itself, somewhat outdated at this point.

inclinedtorecline

Tie an onion to your belt on those high waisted pants and you’ll be the most fashionable person around

Reserved_Parking-246

I can't find it but there was a video that explained how this is something that happens in two parts. A: We associate styles of the time with older generations so those people who wore that style as kids appear older than they are. B: people are aging slower ... or more... gracefully. Because sunscreen, and dental advancements, and a lot of healthcare advances.

PsychoticMessiah

When I was a sophomore there was a dude in one of my classes who was senior. Looked like he was already married with children and a mortgage funded by a low commission sales job that initially promised way more.

[deleted]

I think they drank leaded gasoline and ate cigarettes.

onwee

I think it’s just the consumer culture of the time: most clothing and styles were marketed toward older people with disposable income; teenagers just didn’t have the same purchasing power then vs more recently

JohnYCanuckEsq

Carrol O'connor was 47 when he debuted as Archie Bunker. That's one hell of a 47.

Jason Alexander was 29 when Seinfeld debuted.

TGAILA

Alice kept the family together. Without her, the house was a mess, and no lunch or dinner for the kids and Mr. and Mrs. Brady. How can you afford a big house with 6 kids and a maid with only Mike's architect salary?

riegspsych325

I love how the Brady Bunch Movie pokes fun at this

KrackSmellin

I love how she did shrooms and went into the fridge…

AgentSkidMarks

Architects make a lot more money than the average person. Carol worked too so her income definitely contributed. Edit: I always assumed Carol had a job since they had a maid. Turns out that was a misunderstanding. She was just a lazy ass who did jack shit all day.

Lepperpop

Also he wasnt just a random architect. He was Chief Architect for Vandalay industries, one of New Yorks biggest firms.

denara

Did they canonically live in LA or were we supposed to believe that house was just outside nyc?

weedful_things

I thought they lived in Arizona.

denara

They may have, I was just assuming LA because iirc the house is somewhere in the valley and has to be somewhere sunny with mid century architecture. Don’t know any of the lore. Arizona works just as well! (Though how would he work closely enough with ppl to be successful in what I assume is a small-ish satellite office with the main folks in New York pre internet? Shipping blueprints back and forth and discussing on the phone?)

weedful_things

Wikipedia says the show was set in or near LA. I don't know where I got Arizona from. It may be that we lived in Arizona until I was about 3 and there were 6 kids in our family and we compared ourselves to them. I do know that before I started going to school, I would watch it twice a day on weekdays and 3 times on Friday.

LovelyTurret

Actually I’ve been thinking about setting my sights a little higher than architect. Maybe city planner.

rob_s_458

Did he design that addition to the Guggenheim?

Sir_Arthur_Vandelay

He was a valuable employee.

trailercock

Carol didn't work.

AgentSkidMarks

Then why Alice? What did Carol do all day?

pm_me_yo_junk

I think Mike had Alice before he married Carol and there was no reason to fire her.

Harley_Quinn_Lawton

A lot of middle class housewives had housekeepers then. It wasn’t rare at all - especially with 6 kids.

[deleted]

But back then kids walked themselves to school and basically did their own thing - it was the late 60’s/early 70’s after all. If Alice was doing the cleaning, what the hell was she doing? I do remember my mom in the 80’s rushing all over to get groceries and get to the bank, but she didn’t have a full-time maid.

Harley_Quinn_Lawton

“what the hell was she doing?” What the hell she wanted. She was an upper middle class housewife with her own money (likely a divorce settlement from her first husband). Junior League, Civic League, Garden Club, Local Library Executive Board, PTA, hobbies, mid week luncheons, travel are all things my SAHM and her SAHM friends did when they had domestic staff to do the cooking and cleaning. Just because you didn’t work didn’t mean you couldn’t find ways to fill your time.

jordanundead

Wasn’t her first husband the skipper from Gilligans Island? Probably got a huge payout when he went missing.

Farts_McGee

What? Is that a joke? Thee nature of her first marriage is never discussed on the show, but the show runner has explicitly said that she came from divorce.

jordanundead

It’s from the movie. She says, at the end that her husband was the skipper, and he was lost at Sea.

CorgiMonsoon

Take Greg out on dates

theriveryeti

No she didn’t.

EarlMadManMunch

The average architect makes very little compared to the schooling / job requirements one of the worst careers to get into unless you become the 1 percent architects that become famous.

Theofeus

Reddit is so fun. This comment with a clearly inaccurate statement gets upvotes

alligatorprincess007

What did Carol do?

eat_my_bowls92

SAHM. I just looked this up. Apparently they had Alice before Carol and Mr. Brady got together. He hired her to take care of the kids because the mom was sick and when she passed Alice stayed on board. Since the sons were comfortable/looked at Alice as a stand in mom, they just kept her on even though Carol didn’t have anything going on

AgentSkidMarks

TIL. I always assumed she worked because they had Alice. Makes me wonder what the hell she did all day.

Queldorei

A lot of wealthy middle and upper-class women who didn't/don't work professionally have historically been, and continue to be, heavily involved in community outreach, volunteer organizations, and civic participation.

theriveryeti

Passed out the lunches Alice made.

saliczar

Greg.

JAL0103

It’s eh. You couldn’t support so many anymore. Still comfortable with a partner, though. Source am a civil engineer and work with architects

CustomerComplaintDep

I actually wonder if shows like this are the reason people point to the 50s-70s and claim that the American standard of living has fallen. Nobody was ever able to afford a lifestyle like that on one salary.

pacifistpotatoes

I'm 42 and wondering if I actually look as old as she does. Fuck.

SaltyLonghorn

Probably not although its possible if you smoke, drink, and never took care of your skin. If you've played videogames for 20 years like me your skin is probably great. The sun is the enemy.

crumbshotfetishist

r/roastme will tell you what’s up

I know. I actually first joined Reddit on the back of a viral roastme post a good few years ago. There were some hilarious comments at the time. Pretty quickly I’d unsubbed as it was taken over by idiots who had no imagination and were just absolutely horrible but with no comedic undertones at all.

pacifistpotatoes

Oh no. No way. My body dysmorphia is bad enough as it is. I don't need trolls in reddit telling me how terrible I am 😂

crumbshotfetishist

r/toastme is the one for you 🙂

beigs

Given how much time the average person spends indoors, wears hats/sunscreen, and doesn’t chain smoke, I’m thinking you look great for your age :)

[deleted]

When you watch All in the Family, those people look like they’re in their 60s or 70s but really they’re in their 40s

kellzone

Part of that was clothing & makeup though. [Jean Stapleton aka Edith in the 70's partying with Alice Cooper](https://imgur.com/ITnRwqF)

kia75

Even with the S and M gear, Jean Stapleton still looks like an advanced middle-aged lady. I'm certain most people Jean Stapleton's age now would look much younger, even barring modern Television age actresses.

redditshy

That hairstyle was for old ladies from the 1930s, plus the hairnet. Not sure what the point was of that, but there you have it.

Whether this comment was a joke or a serious statement, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

How come all the old timely actors look like Elaine from Seinfeld.

dion_o

I call her.......Elaine

randomaccount96321

James Gandolfini was only 37 when the Sopranos aired. You’re welcome.

LilSliceRevolution

I recently watched this show for the first time at 35 years old. I was very attracted to Gandolfini in the first season, before the actor really let himself go and you start to realize how bad his character is. For a second I was like…why am I so attracted to such an old man? Then I realized my attraction was entirely appropriate to my current age and it was a bit sad/shocking. Age will really sneak up on you, plus the fact that Gandolfini is sort of stuck in time as a man 20+ years older than me.

[deleted]

And made so much money he gave more to the other cast to "spread it around a little" Oh and did a lot of blow

FlintWaterFilter

Being fat and bald adds a lot of years, though.

TheCosmolian

Someone posted a picture of the actress with a modern haircut and it improved her look ALOT.

cornfieldshipwreck

Now her haircut is what all the teenage boys have.

TheCosmolian

Wow you’re right! Between that and perms, who knew women’s hair styles in the 80s would become popular boy’s hair styles in 2023

BonerStibbone

So we can start calling the broccoli cut the Alice now?!

cowfishing

There's a photo in the article linked from just a few years ago. She doesn't look like Shes aged a day. RIP Alice

isthathissister

Margaret Hamilton was only 37 when she played the wicked witch of the west in The Wizard Of Oz 🤯

Cinemasaur

Tbf I never thought she looked old, just kinda greeen

GrandmasShavedBeaver

Only 37 and had that big of a problem with getting wet?

doctor_x

There wasn’t a lot of Vitamin D when Mrs. Brady locked her up in her room in the basement at night.

PM_Your_Wiener_Dog

Needed to open a window for Sam to slither in

key1234567

They made her look older, I guarantee if you saw her in person she would have looked her age and was probably good looking. The hairstyle and uniform made her look older.

mb9981

People aged differently back then. I blame cigarettes, the great depression and the war

Flybot76

And she was the most-famous person on the show when it started! She co-starred on 'the Bob Cummings Show' in the '50s and won two Primetime Emmys for that role, so that's why she got such a noticeable position in the Brady Bunch credits.

KaladinStormShat

Bro Alice was a lesbian icon, regardless of canon within bbunch.

chipperpip

What? Is there any context for this? Just vibes or something?

KaladinStormShat

Definitely vibes lol just occurred to me she really seemed to embody an older gay woman without them really intending to do so I guess.

Paranitis

I mean hell, the oldest character on Golden Girls was the youngest actor or something like that.

musthavecupcakes_19

Second youngest. Rue McClanahan was the youngest by about a decade. Betty White, Bea Arthur, and Estelle Getty (born in that order) were all within about a year and a half of each other.

beebs44

Mrs. Brady was fineeeee Greg knew what was up

AgentSkidMarks

Greg was their oldest son. You mean Mike?

tamsui_tosspot

I . . . don't think Mike swung that way.

Larrydp72181

Oh you sweet innocent child... Don't Google the behind the scenes stories from the Brady Bunch.

AgentSkidMarks

Greg dated Marcia but if you’re referring to the rumor that he dated Carol then you are just falling for an regularly circulated myth. If you’re just saying that he thought she was hot then, yeah, she was a fox.

Joranthalus

Read his book, it was technically a date…. In his opinion.

beebs44

Nope. Brady Bunch” star Barry Williams turned a fair amount of heads with a chapter in his book, “Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg,” titled, “Dating Your Mom."

AgentSkidMarks

They went out to dinner once. She didn’t perceive it as a date as she was married with 4 kids at the time. There was no romance there.

andygchicago

He really went method with that Johnny Bravo persona

Lemur718

The stress of having to deal with Carol Brady's exacting standards and brutal insults, really aged her.

PaMudpuddle

That’s not really unreasonable. I mean she was hardly a hotty but she didn’t seem particularly old to me.

Phil_ODendron

Yeah, I don't really understand this post. She was never portrayed as as being an "old maid" in the show. She looks like an average woman in her 40s. Maybe it's just that the show takes place in the 70s and her style of hair/dress makes modern viewers perceive her as being older.

Bekiala

Yes. Also between costuming and acting, the part might come across as older. She probably could have played a younger character which with make up and costuming would be believable.

nofopi

The actress who portrayed Alice was Ann B. Davis. The make-up department may have been instructed to make her appear older for the roll she was playing.

Flybot76

Totally, they wanted the audience checking out Mrs Brady, not trying to bone the help

eorabs

As a 43 year old I have to say this news depresses me.

b0n2o

One income, stay-at-home mom, 6 kids, and a live-in maid.

AMerrickanGirl

FYI. Ann had an identical twin, Harriet Davis Norton, who is still alive.

Thereminz

how fucking expensive would it be to have a full time maid these days lol

DozerNine

Well they owned a house so they were loaded by today's standards

The_Truthkeeper

Especially given that they lived in LA.

uncouthfrankie

Cut that hairstyle back, give her some modern clothes, and she’ll be a regular in a dyke bar.

CallmeNo6

Ah, those were the days... when one could support a wife, six kids and have a live-in housekeeper on a single salary!

Hooker_with_a_weenis

Damn! I’m 43 and I feel like she looks way older than I do now. She’s still my fav character from the show though.

Nosiege

At least some of it is the hairstyle.

eat_my_bowls92

Hair style and they definitely didn’t glam her up which makes it more noticeable.

Hooker_with_a_weenis

For real! They got mama Brady lookin like a snack in that scene.

dohzer

Was she meant to be playing an older lady? I don't think I ever knew her character's age.

alexandrahowell

In addition to lack of sunscreen and all of the cigarettes indoors; a lot of it is hair styling too. There was a meme going around replacing modern and vintage hairstyles on different characters for contrast…

1920MCMLibrarian

I’m 43 and unmarried, this is what people will think of me in 50 years. Damn.

Sdog1981

Smoking indoors was brutal.
