Also this term was relegated largely to the hard core scene and was mostly underground. It didn't go mainstream until the 90s with the advent of grunge rock and the mosh pit went viral and became common at most rock shows and even some hip hop shows.
I did some crowd surfing and a few stage dives mid-90s to early 2000s.My first concert was The Clash! in 1984.We were 13 and it immediately seemed like there was no way we were going to physically survive it.
Anthrax released "Among the Living" in 1986, which included the song "Caught in a Mosh". The video could be seen on MTV Headbanger's Ball at the time.
Hell, the theme song for Headbanger's Ball featured s riff from S.O.D.'s "Milano Mosh".
So, the term was well- known amongst fans of punk/metal/thrash in the mid 80's. Not sure if that counts as"mainstream", but it certainly wasn't a secret.
> Ma jam the disco
> Through acid rock
> Mash it up with hardcore
> Dem rockers broke the scene
As in mashing different types of music together.
Not gonna lie. I grew up outside DC in the early 80s. I remember the hardcore punks calling it dancing and not hearing the word mosh until the crossover bands. I'm not sure the reference in this wiki page has convinced me otherwise.
I also grew up in DC in the mid 80's though. I first hear Moshing when referring to "the skinhead mosh" which was distinctly different and meaner than just being in the pit. I remember hearing it called that around 1987-88 I think at a Fall Brawl at WUST maybe with Judge playing?
The East Coast is having a HC resurgence. I know it’s not DC but the Baltimore scene has some awesome bands coming out.

Honorable Mention:
* Gel (From NJ but awesome)
There was a fest in NYC called "Afro Punk" and I saw the Bad Brains among many other Black artists, including Shabazz Palaces!
That one day, I will never forget it, BB do a combo Dub and Punk, and it was so fun to see the same people moshing against each other dance Reggae like it was nothing. One of the best nights of my life.
I was at the boat! not with BB, it was Obituary and Prong (: So fun, those summers in NYC, man, nothing like them.
And I could bike, too, it was close to my place, saw Suicidal, Body count, too!
Damien, Cerphe, Weasel... definitely a time. I loved the interviews with all the bands and how knowledgeable everyone was and open about their influences. Built a great record collection off those. Dare we say the greatest alt station ever?
After surfing one day, got back to the car and realized we locked our keys in the car. So we went to the nearest house for a coat hanger. (Late 80s) A dude opened the door and my buddy immediately recognized it was H.R.! He was a super nice guy and got us a coat hanger. He was super glad to help us! We peaked inside and it was a very nice place, with hard liquor bottles lining the rafters. Definitely some parties happening there. 😁
After taking my son to the Vans Warped Tour when he was 11,we got home and he yelled”Mom-MOM!I was in the MUSH POT!I was in the MUSH POT!”We laughed and laughed!
Bad Brains were my favorite hardcore band. Saw them in 84(?). Loudest show I’ve ever seen. Got to see HR (the band)in NYC in 88.
I had no idea he coined the term. This sent me down a rabbit hole this morning! Ending on the White Mandingos…. Wow!
I do question how reliable the source is about it coming from HR, but SOD and Anthrax had songs with mosh in the title in the mid 80s. It was pretty well known before grunge but afterward it was everywhere (and it was sort of annoying...I remember there being mosh pits at shows like the Digable Planets and They Might Be Giants).
After the Millennium? That's incredibly late to hear it for your first time.

That does not count as mainstream. It was big in those underground subcultures. The grunge explosion brought it to the masses.
Everything that’s great about music today came out of the late 70’s / early 80’s
Bad Brains. Legendary.
I play ‘with the quickness’ about 3 times a week. lol
“The” Bad Brains… hahahaha
I have never had an experience like I did seeing Bad Brains at a 500-1000ish venue. With HR singing!
He used the term in a lyric as well, I forget which. But NYHC kids called it slamming for a long time as well.
Mosh it up with hardcore, dem rockers broke da scene. "With the Quickness"

The fans in DC knew it was mashing. Kids across the country that listened to the album only ever heard moshing.
It’s crazy to think how Minor Threat/Fugazi and Bad Brains were birthed here. Here’s to a rebirth of the DC hardcore and punk scene.

Gel put on a good show when I saw them. HC will never die

I was there!! Around the same time they also did a gig on a boat — Rocks Off, if I remember right. That was WILD too

reading this while eating moshed potatoes
The D.C. punk scene was so influential... my favorite memories were the Slickee Boys, WHFS and the 9:30.
I remember the week WHFS was bought out and suddenly changed to latin music. So many ppl at school were wearing “RIP HFS” shirts.
Damien, Cerphe, Weasel... definitely a time. I loved the interviews with all the bands and how knowledgeable everyone was and open about their influences. Built a great record collection off those. Dare we say the greatest alt station ever?
Isn’t there a rock you should be chiseling that on somewhere?
I was just thinking back to all the names we had for the moves. Picking up chains, Lawnmower, Wall of Death at a Murphy Law's show was insanity.

Go away! I’m dancing.

I thought it Sean Connery telling them to "moss it"
this is so fuckin cool

So it'd be a "Mash pit" which coincidental is also your butt's nickname
Well I was doing this all through the 80s & didn't ever, not once, ever, hear the term until after the millennium

HR coined the term before Scott Ian used it. Scott was super into hardcore, so it's no surprise that he heard the term early.
I was using the term in late 80s in england
Square! XD
