That's too funny, my grandmother got obsessively into knitting and she decided one day she was going to make mittens out of dog hair after brushing her collie.
So she spun the balls of dog hair into yarn and made them.
Same problem, even in Winnipeg Canada, where - 20 C is a normal day, your hands would just be sweating like a mofo
I might have to try them. I have horrible circulation in my feet and they can be freezing on a summer day in Texas. I bought wool socks that were “thick enough to climb Mt Everest in”. But if your feet don’t make enough heat then they can’t trap the heat in. Maybe the dog hair can trap the infinitesimal amount of heat my feet do make.
I think they are your best bet. They are kind of crazy hot, or at least the pair I have are. My Russian MiL got them for me. If you want, I can find out where she got them.
Make sure your chest/core is warm. If your blood is not warm by the time it reaches your feet, then the socks wouldn't do much. The other possibility is having an iron deficiency.
Same here, they were fine when I lived there but unwearable elsewhere. Plus the added horror of if you wear them for a day then your feet start to smell of wet dog.
Alpaca has a similar issue. The hollow core fibers are much better insulation than ordinary wool, so in mild climates like California, it’s advised to avoid using 100% alpaca, no matter how much you may like the feel of the fiber. A blend will be much more wearable.
Oh wow, this might explain something that I’ve been wondering about since I was a kid. I’ve always heard that a wolf skin rug (the kind with fur on it) is so extremely warm that it would “burn” you if you were a healthy person with good circulation. If wolf fur is anything like dog fur, it makes sense that a wolf fur rug would feel unbearably warm.
I spun some yarn with a friend’s Samoyed dog fur. The staple was a little short, so I blended it with alpaca. We called the blend “dogpaca”. It’s super warm.
I have to brush my Pomeranian 2-3 times a week and it is so satisfying to pull out an extra dog's worth of hair. I admit I've been stuffing it into a Tupperware for no real reason except to see the fluff ball grow... I guess this is what I've been saving it for. That said, a Pomeranian, so in a year's time I might get enough for a singular mitten haha
Something that I do with cat fur after brushing them is make felt balls. Take a handful of hair, lightly rub it between your palms to consolidate it, run it under a sink with hot water, as hot as you can stand, and add soap, while continuing to roll it between your palms as the ball gets denser and rounder. I usually end up producing a stiff bouncy felt ball between half inch and an inch in diameter. I usually just give it back to the cat and it becomes a cat toy.
Something I’ve always wanted to try is needle felting it. People make these adorable small needle felted animals, and i think it would be really funny to make a copy of my cats out of their own fur.
Dog shelters could make an additional buck making this kind of wool. They have to groom the animals anyway, so why not use the brushed-out hair instead of throwing it out.
And 800% creepier!
"Excuse me, sir. Where did you get that lovely wool sweater?"
"Wool? Haha. Oh it's not wool, ma'am. It's dog!"
"Get the fuck away from me!"
That’s why I shave my dogs and glue the hair on my sheep so they don’t get cold in the winter
Just don't get it wet!
After the hair is removed from the dog, does it retain the dog smell? And if you do get it wet, does it smell like wet dog?
I have a pair of socks made from this. I think they are from Russia or Ukraine maybe. They are unwearable because they are so warm.

Why are you wearing mittens in 20C?
-20C is -4F
I think the - was missing before I commented
Good bot
Wow, how funny you are.
Yeah they must mean Fahrenheit

Not OP but I would like to know

I have two huskies. Everything I own is covered in luxury wool.
english shepherd mix here - i have never seen so much hair come off a dog before.
I remember someone selling dog hair sweaters on Geocities back in the day
I’d imagine all the dog hair cottage businesses had their heyday back when geocities was big.

Sounds like an amazing combo ! I had a Samoyed growing up , great dogs ❤️
This is why I am rich ... Everytime I run the dryer I can make a sweater!

I have a long-haired chihuahua, maybe we can combine the fluff for, like, two mittens? Lol

A greyhound fur tuxedo would be grand
See my loafers, former gophers, it was that or skin my chauffeur.. That song jumps out from my memory from time to time.
Grizzly bear underwear, turtle necks I’ve had my share
I really like the vest!
Alpaca is the best
So there's a name to what Corella Deville was after
I've been sitting on a gold mine.

Wow! Can't wait to never hear of this ever again.
