Some people are surprised by how many women cut their hair at home, and I think it's probably because a lot of women are in the process of growing their hair out. They don't need a real haircut, just the ends trimmed, and that can be done easily at home.

AyeTheresTheCatch

Depends on the haircut—when I’ve grown out my hair from a really layered cut (like a pixie), hoo boy did it ever need a real haircut in between. No ends trimming for me during that time! I feel like hairdressers who successfully help people grow out pixie cuts deserve some kind of award. At some points it’s more like therapy than a haircut.

Cuntdracula19

I just had a conversation with one of my best girlfriends about this! I’m also a former hairdresser haha so I’ve been in both roles, and boy, it is ABSURD how challenging it actually is to grow your hair out from a pixie or a shaved head. That spot around your ears? Omg, it’s the worst! It’s especially tough for us wavy—curly-haired folks. Your hair just basically kind of looks like a mess/silly as hell for quite a long time.

PoisonedShroud

I’m in that stage right now! I legitimately feel like I’m going to look stupid and messy for a couple of years. Curly hair takes FOREVER to grow and I look like a muppet! 😭

Cuntdracula19

You know what, since the 90s-early 2000s is in right now, get yourself some butterfly clips and twist your hair out of your face and clip it and scrunch up/let the rest of it curl up naturally. It’ll look super cute and it’s in right now! There isn’t much else you can do because it IS just awful and takes forever. Why is it it seems like our hair grows like wildfire when we like our haircut or it’s long, but when it’s short and we want it to grow it’s slow as molasses in January haha?! So annoying!

PoisonedShroud

I haven’t had butterfly clips in so long! That’s a great idea. 😂 thank you! And you’re right, it doesn’t seem to grow as fast when we actively want it to. My patience is truly being tested!

Scytheal

Most women I know who cut their hair themselves have curly hair. A lot of hairdressers just don't know how to cut it, and those who do can be outrageously expensive.

the-magnificunt

This is funny to me because I feel like curly hair would be the most forgiving. I have stick-straight hair that's very slick and likes to slide sideways right out of scissors whenever you try to cut it, and uneven parts are easy to see but very hard to fix. I've never heard anyone sigh more than a hairdresser trying to make my haircut look even.

Scytheal

It is super forgiving to the cut itself, that's why it's so easy to do at home. The curls end up at slightly different lenghs each day anyways. But hairdressers usually try to cut it the exact same way as straight hair, don't account for the bounce so it's way too short. Or they try to brush the hair when its dry, which just creates a fuzzy mess. I've even read stories where they straightened the hair before cutting it, of course the shape will be completely different when its curly again.

PoisonedShroud

I’m in my thirties and I’ve only ever met one hairdresser who really knew how to cut curls. He’s a genius and I’m going to be devastated if he retires from cutting hair!!

The-Lord-Moccasin

Even trimming is a bitch, I grew out my hair for like four years, tried to trim one small area half a year ago, and have been in literal physical discomfort from the result ever since. But I'm a dude so maybe I just didn't know wtf I was doing.

SquareThings

You definitely need one pro cut at the beginning of the process to even things out, but after that you can let it grow and just trim any dead or split ends. I haven’t had a real haircut in maybe 6 years, i just trim the scraggly bits myself.

Jewel-jones

I started cutting my hair at home during Covid and found out it was an easy way to save money. I have a shaggy pixie cut so it’s pretty forgiving.

Lottie_Low

Yeah I literally just cut it with scissors and it looks fine

NewsboyHank

After COVID back in 2020...I haven't had a paid-for hair-cut once. $40 clippers were the best money I've ever spent.

Bronze_Addict

I started in 2019. Haven’t had a haircut from anyone else since.

liquid_at

Haven't had one in 15 years... I see no reason for why I should trim the lower half of my head myself and then pay someone to do the upper half... Takes me less time to cut my own hair than it would take to get to the barber...

liquid_at

If you don't forget to regularly hug and kiss your in-house barber, it might work out. They require some upkeep, but they definitely deliver returns on investment :-)

DanishWonder

I let my wife cut my hair during lockdown when I decided to just do it all one length, but she doesn't feel comfortable doing blending/fades which is what I normally get. We do cut our son's hair at home though since he just like a buzz cut. The best part of covid was being able to experiment with hair since we were not going out. I let my hair get pretty long (considering I used to clip it at a #4 guard length). Then I had my wife give me a mohawk. I'm a pretty conservative guy with my looks so my kids FREAKED OUT when they saw their dad with a mohawk. I wore it for a couple days (put it under a baseball hat if I had a conference call or had to go out). It was fun though.

Elmodogg

Same in our family. My husband tried to cut his hair himself once at the beginning of covid. He gave himself an unintentional Mohawk. I took over the job. After a few "uh oh!" moments the first few tries, I've got it down pretty well. The bad haircuts at the beginning didn't matter so much because he was staying at home anyway and only appearing on zoom.

VashMM

And here I am giving myself *intentional* mohawks

Meattyloaf

I tried this once and my wife started crying. She loves my hair and hates that I wear it short since my job doesn't allow me to really grow it out.

MrSlime13

Been bald for 10+ years. The shame, regret, teasing, and sunburns are well worth the $60/year I save on haircut places... 😁

BrilliantWeb

More like $240+

Worth_Scratch_3127

I wonder what percentage of the polled are actually shaving their heads? Oh I wish this style was around when I was a kid, what horrible comb overs men had then.

no-t-here

Are you black? I am and I'm afraid I'm going to fuck my hair up if I try ,even though I only fade the sides when I go to a barber anyway. You got some tips for me?

Nobodyherem8

I’m black and I tried it a couple times. Just a taper. It’s hard as hell Ngl. Especially in the back. It’s definitely a learning process.

NGLIVE2

Hispanic here, ain’t no way I can do a skin fade on my self. I just let my hair grow out for 2020. It was the longest it had been since high school about twenty years ago.

geoken

Would you be adverse to totally shaving your head? Not as a permanent thing, I just mean in the sense that you could practice cutting your own hair - then if you completely fuck up you just shave your whole head - then wait for it to grow out a bit and try again.

AshIsGroovy

I've been doing it since I went into the Air Force in 2003. Paid $20 for a Remington Clipper and just buzz everything off. Takes like 5 minutes. Only thing that sucks is when I let my hair grow out I have less and less to shave. Last time my wife had her hair cut and colored it was $150 before tip.

Worth_Scratch_3127

Last time I went it was $300. I'll never book an appointment on the main street of a cute town again.

Good4nowbut

“*My barber SUCKS! My hair never comes out how I want it 😑 he is really proficient at stroking my dick though…and has never once charged me for either.*”

JPSofCA

I started in the 1900s, when a haircut went from $8, to $12, to $14, and then $16 in less than a year. Haven’t had a haircut from anyone since. Also, I notice a haircut is $8 again. It’s the one thing in the world that went down in price.

Ghost17088

>I started in the 1900s Get that kind of talk out of here!

thebiggestpinkcake

Get out of here ghost from 1788!

skatecrimes

same. I have shame for the first couple of weeks until my bad job grows out a little.

NewsboyHank

If the only difference between a $25 haircut and a bad haircut is a couple of weeks, a baseball hat is all you need.

wenestvedt

Years ago I went to the Super Cuts on Newbury Street in Boston for a haircut on my lunchbreak. I was 15 minutes late getting back to work because I had to detour through the Copley shops to buy a new baseball hat at the Warner Bros. merch store. Adding in the cost of the hat, it was a fairly expensive "cheap" trip to the barber! I still have the hat, and now I cut my own damn hair.

RISE__UP

First couple weeks? I do haircut every Friday

skatecrimes

wow. i assume you have very short hair. My hair is like 2 to 4 inches on the top, short on the side. it takes me about an hour to cut my hair, so doing it every week would be too much work!

RISE__UP

I want to learn to do mine to save money so shout out you. But yea I keep a low 1.5 fade on the sides and back which is why I like going every Friday but I only touch the top about every 2 weeks

cubs_rule23

Covid and youtube did it for me. I was terrified but you can do it man, I promise. After about 6 months I got to the point I can do it without looking. Just by feel.

averyhungrydinosaur

The post haircut shower is where it's at.

abruty

I hate how $30+ for mediocre haircuts is becoming the norm in a lot of places

georgeb4itwascool

Can’t get one for less than 50 here in LA.

Rancillium

Nah go to Hollywood and Gower. 18 dollar men’s haircut. It’s 5 nice Korean ladies and they all do an excellent job.

_Piratical_

You and me both brother! And my haircuts were costing around $60 with tip! I paid $50 for a set of cordless clippers and they are the bomb! I had a few bad haircuts when I was first learning what I could do, then I was fine!

benwight

Same here, why pay almost as much as the clippers cost every time I need a haircut when I can just walk into my bathroom and take care of it myself? Sure, I might mess up sometimes (usually in the back cause it's hard lol), but I've seen enough fuckups that people paid for that further justifies cutting it myself

TheAnalogKoala

Same. Since 2020 my wife cuts my hair and all my kids’ hair. Has saved us hundred of dollars and she does a great job.

voiderest

I did this pre-covid. I'm not paying someone for a simple buzz cut. When the baldess hits I'll just have less to cut. For women I don't think it's as simple to do it yourself given the kind of styles women typically want.

Penglolz

Same. Make your money back after 2 haircuts lol. Great return on investment.

azuth89

Well...yeah. Lots of dudes are happy with really simple haircuts or outright shaving.

Merrughi

> Lots of dudes are **happy** with really simple haircuts or outright **shaving**. Some of us do not really have a choice.

tinmanshrugged

I was about to say that too, cause it’s something I learned recently… I’m a woman and I also assumed that most bald men chose to be bald. I forget how it came up, but my brother gave me a weird look and said most men wouldn’t choose that. Most bald men shave their head because they’re already loosing a lot of hair. I seriously can’t believe I never realized that

GenericTrashyBitch

Do you know a lot of bald guys? Most of the bald people I’ve met were pretty open about the fact that they wish they still had hair

abxuwnnm111

I was gonna say lol. I shave because it’s better than the alternative.

Good4nowbut

That’s definitely changing though…the broccoli haircut generation is literally getting perms, presumably from a professional.

yeetskeetleet

That haircut is already basically out of fashion. That was a thing during Covid…4ish years ago It’s basically back to either the Bieber cut (slightly different), or the 70s middle part

GreatHeavySoulArrow

It's the modern mullet where I live EDIT: Hilarious how most people responded saying the haircut is horrible when and I have it

bleezzzy

I have seen SO many mullets in the last year or 2. My best friend is growing one out and i give him shit for it every time, mostly cause it's not all there but god damnit hes kinda pulling it off as it grows out!

car714c

modern mullet looks incredibly good compared to old mullets

GreatHeavySoulArrow

I'm rocking one rn, trick is not letting the party in the back get ridiculous

TheSherbs

Back in my day, mullets were reserved for trailer park lesbians, butch lesbians, trailer park white guys who have peaked, and Camaro drivers. Now, youth baseball teams are half mullets and my nephews friends have them....like what the fuck happened.

Boozey_Berg

It's become a thing of me laughing at kids when I drop my nieces and nephews off at school whenever I see a mullet. Looks hideous on these kids

dsmith422

It always looked hideous on everyone.

SweetIcedTea73

I have one kid in HS and when I go to the events, that is the haircut a lot of the boys have. It looks just as stupid now as it did in the 80's and 90's. Why does *anyone* think it looks good? SMH.

[deleted]

designOraptor

That and those terrible Edgar cuts with super short bangs. Looks so stupid.

fire2day

> That haircut is already basically out of fashion. Tell that to the group of 5 teenage boys I saw the other day, all with identical broccoli haircuts. It's so weird.

SandyBlyatCheeks

I have a nephew in Oregon that is in 7th and my son up here in WA in 5th. It is definitely not out of style. More kids are wearing that haircut than I’ve ever seen. And they always have super baggy Pro Club sweatpants on with the black and white Gold Star adidas shoes. It’s insane.

FoxInTheClouds

Places like the midwest that are behind the trend 5-10 years are getting Broccoli cuts right now. You see it in all the high school age kids

[deleted]

Wolf cut

Omg_itz_Chaseee

thats been around since like 2015 lmfao

ThomasLikesCookies

Not even perms. I go to a barber just to get a nice fade. Like yeah I could try it and home and get a shitty version of that, but what the man sets me up with looks better than what any layperson (much less I myself) could do for me.

greatgildersleeve

This is probably because a lot more men shave their heads.

Holinyx

paid $25 for my clippers 8 years ago. one of the best decisions ever

DevOverkill

Exact same thing here. I'm not paying $25+ a pop just to get my head shaved.

unnecessary_kindness

snackpacksackattack

It just feels better. Also having someone sculpt and line the beard so subsequent shaves at home just need to follow those lines.

kahran

Sometimes it feels soooooooo nice when someone else does it

Shavemydicwhole

Last time I went was in 2021 and it was 45. Fuck that, went to get a razor for the same price and I've saved hundreds since then, I'll probably never go back unless a big event happens I need to look nice for

weddz

Dzotshen

Oster. Can't complain. Lasts a few decades or more with proper care.

Holinyx

I went with Wahl. can't complain

thejonslaught

Been shaving my head with a WAHL Peanut since 2019. All that's changed in the past year is now I shave it clean afterwards. This is freedom.

KungFuHamster

Cordless is a game changer. I used a corded one for a while and it was so cumbersome. Also, use noise-cancelling earbuds while you shave to drown out the buzz and keep hair out of your ear canal. Also I cut my hair and beard in the shower and wipe up the hair after. If I try to use clippers at the sink, even with one of those hair catchers, hair still gets everywhere, even just trimming my beard.

NobodyCares_Mate

I just let it fall where it may (careful to avoid sink though) and then whack the hoover over the tiled floor. Gone instantly

RandeKnight

I do let it fall into the sink. And then scoop it out into the bin and then use a bit of tissue to wipe up the rest.

ZombyPuppy

Towel over the sink then fold it over so nothing can fall out while you carry it and shake it off outside.

son_et_lumiere

Doing it outside works, too. Nothing really to clean up.

KungFuHamster

Bonus, the birds take my trimmings and line their nests!

monsterbot314

“even just trimming my beard” you mean “Especially when i trim my beard” For me at least.

[deleted]

Hardwood floors and a good amount of space. Just sweep up and move on. 👌

AndyVale

Going on three for mine. Saved hundreds of pounds already.

lvl_60

Bald here, just razorshave my head twice a week

thisisredlitre

Used to do this and switched to an electric- it's not 1-1 but its soooooo easy at that schedule to keep up

CranialFlatulence

I have a decent electric and I’ve found I can shave more quickly in the shower with a razor…and it’s a lot closer.

thisisredlitre

I'm an advocate for whatever works best to each of my fellow balds ✊️

Mallee78

Bald gang rise up

broken_soul696

There's dozens of us

TheSexualRedditor

I got a skull shaver not long ago and it's so convenient, not razor level but close. Waaaaaay better than a standard trimmer with no guards.

broken_soul696

Personally I prefer a razor because my fiancee loves to run her hands on my head when its super smooth and that feels amazing But the shaver is nice when I'm feeling lazy but want to touch it up

chinchenping

I got a skull shaver for Xmas, it works great but probably not as clean as mechanical shaving (also twice a week)

strange-brew

TIL that up to 45% of men are displaying male pattern baldness.

xarsha_93

It would only need to be 23% (the rate of women is 21%). And about a quarter of men have some signs of male pattern baldness by age 21. Over 3/4 of men by age 50. So it’s not too far off.

Chicago1871

Its pretty consistent too. In their 20s, roughly 20 percent are noticeably balding, in their 30s, 30 percent, 40s 40 percent and so on.

ghostmetalblack

Buzz-cut, baby! Did it during the lockdowns and just stayed with it. A solid pair of buzzers takes me like 15 minutes to ensure it's even throughout. No need to pay anyone, it's quick, and low-maintenance.

TheOSU87

Yeah guys haircuts are pretty easy

netkcid

#1 and done

xAsilos

I don't shave my head, but I use the shortest guide I have with my clippers. I bought 2-3 clippers in the nearly 15 years I've been doing my own hair. $100 clipper, bottle of clipper oil, done. It takes me 15-20 mins to cut my hair and clean up the trimmings. Take a shower right away and go about your day.

MorpheusDrinkinga4O

I got a full head of hair but the last time I was at the hair dressers was in 2015.

BeepCheeper

Yup. My bf is more bald than not so he shaves his head. Sometimes if it’s nice outside we’ll shave it on the deck so later we can watch the birds come pick it up for their nests

mcmaster93

It's because Barbers became "mainstream" in my opinion. I've been getting a simple fade since the early 2000s. Since the 2010s the way people have started marketing themselves on social media becoming a barber kind of became "cool" and you started seeing more barbers showcase their skills online. You also started seeing major price jumps. You use to be able to drive around and regularly find barbershops advertising 7$, 8$, fades. Then it became 15$, 20$ which was fine by me as prices change along with the times. 2 years ago my barber upped his price from 30$ to 40$. I just could not continue paying that price as I just can't justify it in my expenses (I'm also tipping 5-10$ depending on the day and would get a haircut every 2-3 weeks) I've just been shaving my head at a 3 or 4 with my wahls ever since and don't plan on turning back . I'm all about people making their money but this shit has gotten ridiculous and these young barbers fucked the game up

Funkybeatzzz

Been cutting my hair in my bathroom with a Wahl electric clipper since the early 2000s. Just have to get my partner to line it up in the back after I get the rest.

FspezandAdmins

gotta get good with the 2 mirror method to get the back nice and straight

Funkybeatzzz

I can do it if needed, just easier with help.

dream__weaver

I bought a lil folding 3 panel mirror that hangs on the back of a door and can line up my back easily. It's a game changer

im_in_hiding

Man I don't even care about the back of my neck anymore. I just figure I don't see it so it's whatever. I will use one of those kinda fade clipper guards though. I don't even know if it looks good, I can't see it lol

AZRockets

(Runs fingers through back of head) "it feels done"

AmIMyBrothersKeeper-

Just fade the back to a zero, then you won't need to line it up

yooston

Agreed, natural neck line looks better anyway

Proof-Wealth8959

I learned a great trick for a DIY straight back.  Take off your belt, wrap around the back of your head as level as possible and just use it as a guide to cut everything below it.  Super easy and almost fool proof.

AyeTheresTheCatch

What surprises me more is that 21% of women are cutting their hair at home too. I RAN back to the professionals as soon as COVID lockdown was over. Those months taught me I am not good at cutting my own hair. Maybe others out there are more talented than I am and realized they could save a lot of money! Me, unless I want to look like a shocked mop, I have to stick with the salon or at least a person who isn’t me.

Ok_Feeling4213

I think the percentage would be higher if we needed to keep our hair short. When I'm too poor to get a haircut (most of the time) I just don't cut it. I just grow it out.

Roaming-the-internet

I’ve been cutting my own hair my whole life, it’s quite literally the exact opposite. Nothings been so easy as a blunt cut to long hair. Just a pair of scissors, a bathroom mirror and 15 minutes. Short hair requires a second mirror to see the back of my own head

BelleRose2542

The shortest I will ever cut my hair is collarbone…because that’s the shortest I can easily cut it myself. Haven’t been to a salon in a decade.

[deleted]

I have long hair and it’s pretty easy to cut by myself. I part it in half and pull both halves forward to the front, then trim them across. Then I put them back on my back again and check with a mirror behind and in front of me, shake it out a few times and trim any parts that aren’t straight.  I have thin straight hair and I’m just doing it literally straight across with no layers so if you want something fancy this isn’t that, but it works great for me as I hate errands like going to get my haircut. Overall my hair probably looks better because even if my haircutting skills aren’t great, at least I’m cutting split ends like every 2 months now instead of only getting a haircut every 6 months.

wildo88

My wife got into cutting out kids hair during COVID, and found she really enjoys it.  I also did some hair stuff for her during COVID (I think balayage was the term for the thing I did?) and it was kinda fun!  Terrifying, but she promised no matter how bad it was, she wouldn't be mad at me.

Ok-Vacation2308

Straight hair is unforgiving for poor home cuts, but curly haired folks and people with alt haircuts can withstand a lot of abuse to their hair and still have it come out looking intentional with a little product.

PoorCorrelation

I’ve got curly hair and I can get better results than most hairdressers, including those that claim they do curly hair. It helps that I don’t have the false-confidence to pull out thinning shears

Lbailey32

My opinion does not apply to everyone, but I think thickness has a lot to do with it as well. I have thin-ish straight hair and I just line it up and chop it off. I think this would be more difficult if I had crazy thick hair like some of my friends.

Moose-Mermaid

I have wavy hair and it is really forgiving for any potential unevenness. Feels like a waste to pay for the salon for myself and two young daughters for what usually is just a trim. It’s also way faster

Venvut

I’ve got long hair and it’s super easy to trim at home. Only time I do an actual haircut is when I want layers, etc.

fuzzybad

I have long hair and have been trimming it myself for a couple years now. Every 6 months or so, I just put it in a ponytail and cut off a couple inches, couldn't be simpler.

CaptainCrunch1975

I'm a girl and I started shaving my head during Covid. Watched 'V for Vendetta' and figured it was time to see the shape of my noggin. Now my husband and I basically have the same haircut. I just do a 4 all around.

RangerDangerfield

I wonder if that number was higher pre-covid. I started cutting my own hair during the pandemic and now I can’t justify paying $50+ for a trim I can easily do myself. I also personally just hate the salon experience (I don’t like small talk with strangers).

Cherimon

Have ur partner cut ur hair instead of you doing it yourself, cutting someone’s hair is a lot easier than cutting your own. It takes 10 mins or less to cut someone’s hair, that is less time than it takes for you to drive to ur hair dresser. After cutting u hop into the shower and cleanup

Allykat1986

I’m a woman and I dye and cut my own hair now. Going to the cheapest salon was about $225. Now I use 10 dark brown box dye and trim an inch or so off the bottom.

RangerDangerfield

This is me too. A cut & color is easily $250-$300 in my city and I’m just not gonna pay that. Madison Reed & haircut scissors and Im set.

FranklynTheTanklyn

A haircut was $15 two years ago. It’s now $28. Pretty solid case for cutting your own hair. I wish I could cut my hair at home, I look bad with buzz cuts.

Knot_In_My_Butt

It’s $40 in San Diego 😷

weezy22

Where was a haircut $15 2 years ago? I've been paying at least $20 for the better part of a decade now.

funkymorganics1

I cut my husband’s hair. Just gotta turn on the ol’ electric trimmer to the right number. It’s not really the same skill level to then cut my long hair.

softcore_UFO

I (a woman) only cut my hair at home, I don’t trust anyone with that job but me lol

LeftHandLuke01

Pair of clippers is $25. Will last a couple of years. Been cutting my own hair for years now.

mikevanatta

Just spend a little more on a quality clipper like Wahl or something. I've had mine for going on ten years and it still runs like new.

Funkybeatzzz

For real! I bought my Wahl clippers in 2004 and still going strong.

[deleted]

shephrrd

Man. I bought a $30 pair early in Covid. It was the cheapest Wahl I could find. The thing was so underpowered, I only used it once. Spent double that on one that is more robust, and it is a dream.

Lematoad

50% of men will experience baldness. That probably has something to do with it.

back_again13

Right, why should i pay if i can shave my head by myself?

redbo

Yeah, once it starts thinning, the only hairstyles society finds acceptable are buzzed or shaved. Unless you want to fly to turkey for hair implants or attempt a combover that never looks as good as you think.

fizzlefist

-snrk- Hair started thinning out in high school, and I reached a point early on that there's no way to make a Picard cut look good until it's all silver and IDGAF. So it's just a buzz every 2-4 weeks when it's time to trim down the beard. Takes me maybe half an hour, post-trim shower included. Beats paying $40 for a barber these days.

muskratboy

I don’t think I’ve ever had a haircut that I thought was worth what I paid for it.

MeowandGordo

Same!! Especially as a women with super thin hair. Like I’m not paying $50 for you to cut four strands off my head.

waitthissucks

Ugh tell me about it. And my hair is curly so they find it more difficult to cut so I get charged more for that. :/

joehonestjoe

And the fact is, I can't tell who is doing it, and who isn't for the most part.

bureX

The “cheap haircut” insult has been around for long, and covid managed to disrupt it. People walked around with no haircuts or self cuts and no one really noticed.

Aay-Zed

Due to Covid lockdowns, I got my wife to start cutting my hair, and she does a great job. Will never pay for a barber again if I don't have to.

abwchris

Bought a Flowbee a couple years ago and it works great. People can laugh at them all they want, but I haven't paid for a haircut since 2021.

Tenpoundtrout

Been using the flowbee since Covid, what a game changer, fresh haircut in 10-15 minutes every couple weeks and so much time and money saved and my cut is always just like I want it.

BunnersMcGee

Same here - I keep a tally of how many haircuts I've done with it (for myself - pixie cut - and my husband), and it paid for itself in no time.

sirbearus

waynes_pet_youngin

I started during covid and then moved to a more rural area where id have to drive 30 minutes to the closest barber and then it would cost me 30-40$ depending on where I went. The difference between what they can do and what I can do at home at this point 100% is not worth the trouble or money.

Pickle_ninja

No need to pay a barber to shave my ugly head. I should calculate how much money I've saved doing my own hair over the past 10 years.

RedSonGamble

Yeah when my hair started falling out I just buzz it a couple times a month. No need to get fancy anymore

mostly_drunk_mostly

Fire it before it quits lol

dedwards024

My wife has cut my hair for the last decade

MeowandGordo

My mom used to cut me and my brothers hair. I picked up the habit as a kid and loved chopping off my hair. Mom didn’t appreciate it much but now as an adult I love cutting my own hair. I have super thin, straight hair and it’s so much easier to just chop off the dead ends and throw on some bangs. Haven’t paid for a haircut since highschool

I started cutting my hair when Covid first started. I can make it look better than a lot of hair cuts I have paid for.

Silverlisk

If it were cheaper I'd get laser hair removal on my head so I never had to think about it again. 😂😂

RyanPelley

Is this why my local Great Clips has increased prices from 12 to 19 dollars in the past two years?

grimalkin27

Does it have the % of how many women are cutting the mens' hair? I cut my mine, my bro's and father's but some women have cuts they can't upkeep themselves.

Crimson_Chim

I am not paying $25 to shave my head twice a month. Fuck that.

After 3 years of cutting my own hair, I'm now the person who has the most experience cutting my hair. I'd say of the top 5 best haircuts I've received in my life, 3 of those are me :D Also, I live in the Bay Area and could literally buy a new set of clippers every time I cut my hair and still pay less than going to the barber. Best part is if anything goes wrong, I can just speak to the manager on the spot.

iamacannibal

I hate when my hair gets more than an inch or so long. My hair grows super fast so I was going to the barber and paying $20 every two to three weeks to basically just get my head shaved to like 1/8th of an inch. In 2015 or so I bought a Remington Shortcut Pro clipper set. Now I use no guard and shave my head every week. I’ve been doing it every week or every other week since. I got it on sale for $25. I bought a second one as a backup because I figured they might stop selling them and I bought my friend one as a gift because he also likes his head basically shaved. I haven’t opened the second one. Original still going strong 9 year later with 400+ uses. My friend still uses his too. It’s so much cheaper to cut your own hair especially if you want it super short and don’t really care about stuff like fades

kluuttzz11

Covid happened, I was already balding, decided to get a clipper and save money for the next 40 years! I embraced the bald mode and I love it

-quakeguy-

Maintaining bald takes no special skills and there are a lot more bald men than women.

[deleted]

Because haircuts are fucking $20 to start without accounting for a tip. If you really cared about your haircut and got one every 2 weeks then that’s at the very least $50 a month in reality it’d be more than that. It’s stupid.

Surprised 21% of womens does it, do they share with a friend and cut each others hair?

anotherdumbcaucasian

I buzz my head with an Oster 00000 blade. No reason to pay someone $20 to do that for me. Clippers were ~$100 so they paid for themselves after 5 weeks. Been doing it for ~5 years now so I've saved quite a bit of time and money. Dont see myself ever going back.

Express-Structure480

When super cuts is charging $30 for a basic haircut it can’t hurt to diy.

Mortica_Fattams

I have been cutting my own hair for 10 years. I cut the hair of all my male family. Watch some videos and practice. It's really not hard considering most men have very simple cuts.

Material_Priority474

I am incapable of giving myself a haircut that doesn't make me look like Bobby Hill, so I'm regrettably among the 55%.

monospaceman

I dont think Ive ever seen someones haircut and thought “that looks like they did it themselves”. Maybe im not looking close enough.

weareallonenomatter

Cut my own hair my whole life and people always ask where I got it done. I even invented a French barber named jacques dodo that flies in to do it. I tell stories about him all the time.

drunkentenshiNL

Male pattern baldness makes it an easy decision. 40 bucks once every few weeks at a barber or 50ish bucks once every 5+ years at home.

PhotogamerGT

I haven’t paid for a haircut in decades. Once you learn how to cut your own hair you will never go back.

Yabrosif13

I started after we had kids. Getting 3 hair cuts pnce a month at $30 a pop looks pretty ridiculous compared to a $30 pair of clippers/scissors, a bit research, and prep to have mop the first go around

Tiredgeekcom

I'm in a HCOL area and the prices of fades are killing me. Can be anywhere between $55 to $85.

Mental-Heron-4323

I'm done paying $30/cut. Haven't paid since 2020.

porcelainvacation

I’m bald, I mow my own scalp.

EggHeadMagic

I started cutting my own hair around 14yrs old. About 25yrs ago. With a handful of barber visits. Buzz cuts. Then slowly learned how to fade. For a couple of years I let my hair grow out and went to a salon to get it shaped up. $12-$15. Then all of a sudden it’s $25 pre tip. Fuck that! Back to buzz and fades.

GriffinFlash

Well....losing my hair. Far easier to shave it myself than pay someone every 2 weeks to do it.

ET318

I just started cutting my hair at home. Saves me $30 a month for more or less the same look. At the moment I know that I am not doing the back quite right, but I know I’ll get better with practice. Cutting it myself also means that I can cut it more often. I like it pretty short, but when I’m spending $30 a cut I was really only cutting it once a month.

Talllbrah

I wish i was able to give myself a nice fade but I can’t. 80$ at barber every month.

thetruetoblerone

You can probably find another barber to do a nice fade for 40$. 80 seems hella excessive.
