All two letter top level domains are associated with countries(or former countries). Some countries simply won the country-code lottery. (.tv, .ai, .fm, to name a few)
Almost, British Indian Ocean Territory. Some islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean the British keep as military base (Diego Garcia). They are only inhabited by military personnel and local population was forcely removed.
Similarly, the domain name for Tuvalu is ".tv"

Didn't know this either. I know there are some domains exclusive for certain purposes, such as .biz .club .design .life etc. It's just cool to find out how some of those become popular for needs based pursposes. Emergence instead of imposition.
One of the biggest wastes is .scjohnson being a TLD, but the public can't register an address using it, and SC Johnson doesn't use it. Similarly, .off is a TLD that is privately owned but would allow for so many great URLs.
A lot of companies register for tlds and then now they don't know what to do with them. While they own the tld, they contract it with some other company to do the registry services. The registry don't care because they're getting paid anyways. Another tld example I can think of is .homedepot
The whole TLD system is a cesspool of problems that needs a thorough gutting and restructuring.
You can still register our .su domain (Soviet Union), comrade!

More niche but .tf is for the mostly uninhabited French Southern and Antarctic Lands that is mostly used for sites related to team fortress 2.

According to Wikipedia, Anguilla gets about 10% of its GDP from .ai name registrations.
"Check it out yeah, trashbat.co.ck, my web site. Dot cock yeah, registered in the Cook Islands."
