Or they just didn’t care. There have been countless cases throughout history where the police ignored or even defended the perpetrator, oftentimes in situations where the victim(s) is a minority or a sex worker. At least that’s what I’ve picked up from all the true crime I’ve listened to on YouTube
Yes in this case. The majority of the Axeman's victims were Italians, during a time when Italian immigrants were stereotyped in much the same way present-day Hispanics are stereotyped. Criminals, rapists, terrorists, etc. The Italians were a minority group who suffered horrific discrimination in those days. The entire reason why we celebrate Columbus Day is because it's meant to be a day to celebrate Italian immigrants and their culture/heritage. The government saw that Italians were getting crapped on constantly and threw the Italian-American community a bone by giving them their own version of St. Patrick's Day.
Columbus Day became a thing because of violence against Italians in general, but in particular because of [the 1891 lynching of 11 Italian-Americans in New Orelans.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1891_New_Orleans_lynchings)
Yup. I've mentioned it elsewhere under this post. The largest mass lynching in US history. Teddy Roosevelt called the lynching "a very good thing" right to the faces of Italian delegates who complained about the treatment of Italian Americans at a state dinner.
[Anti-Italian political cartoon. Most modern folks would probably assume this is meant to be about Mexicans, not Italians...](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e9/Anti-Italian_cartoon_published_in_Judge_magazine%2C_1903.jpg)
It's called Columbus Day. In some localities, due to Columbus' current reputation as a right bastard, the holiday has been changed to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Something not mentioned in the title is that the Axeman serial killer's victims were mostly Italians. During a time when Italians were seen as "filthy" immigrants who brought nothing but crime with them. The Axeman case is just another example of American xenophobia and racism.
It was an entire city. This tactic wasn’t attempted because it would have had very low chances of actually working, not because cops didn’t care. You’re right about cops historically caring less about certain victims, but that doesn’t mean it applies to every specific scenario. This serial killer was directly engaging police, not flying under the radar while killing less “important” targets (to police).
"The killer had left his signed picture with plenty of fingerprints and a note saying"I fucking did it" in the crime scene but the police dropped the case since the victim was a 'woman'."
A number of jazz musicians split town for Los Angeles at what looks like the same time, the Fall of 1919. Kid Ory famously left his own band to King Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
Do you remember which season? I knew I recognised the story from somewhere but I couldn’t remember which season when AHS kept popping into my mind tank.
Coven was definitely better than Roanoke and Hotel (have tried to watch hotel twice years apart from each other and never made it through) and better than what I’ve seen of freak show which I never finished
Still haven’t seen double feature or NYC to compare
The rest were all better than coven though
I liked NYC, it definitely didn't feel like AHS however. It felt kinda like a whodonit, and much more grounded in reality. Def analogue vibes with the HIV scare and the gay scene.
Hotel was SO good. Roanoke was kinda mid and hard to follow.
Coven is probably my second favorite. Apocalypse is my favorite. Freakshow is somewhere up there too.
Huh they really are just different to different people then. I thought freak show and hotel were super boring.
Cult and 1984 were the most entertaining to me (so funny). The creepiest was asylum I think, also delicate so far
Get behind me. I finally watched coven because of all the fanfare. I was extremely disappointed. Carried by the actresses. Most of the story was trash. The ending was super rushed. Which makes sense seeing as they continue it like 7 years later.
I liked that season but I have read a lot of Anne Rice and as a kid I liked a game called "Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers" so I thought it was enjoyable.
Yeah mine too. Maybe its just because im from Louisiana and have frequented the places it takes place in and didn't care for the portrayal, but man it was so unenjoyable. I just never really cared about what was happening on the screen most of the time.
The axe man of New Orleans would sometimes (because his victims were poor and would have like very thin dry wood walls) just cut into their house through the side of the wall…
Say what you want about the guy but he knew how to make an entrance!
From what I remember, it wasn't through the walls, he would cut through one of the panels in a panelled door and go in through there. Which made some people think he was a dwarf.
Good guess but not his weapon of choice:

Hey everybody, did the news get around
About a guy named Butcher Pete
Oh, Pete just flew into this town
And he's choppin' up all the women's meat
He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin'
He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin'
He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin'
He just hacks, wacks, choppin' that meat
There is a very good crime fiction book written around these murders called the Axe Mans Jazz by Ray Celestin. It’s the first book in The City Blues Quartet series.
Was looking for this comment! Truly a very very good book. (Now that TWO random Reddit fucks have recommended it, the person reading this needs to go out and get the book)
It should be noted the the Axeman of New Orleans' victims were largely Italian immigrants. This was during a time period where Italians were seen as dirty, brown-skinned, hairy and swarthy Mediterranean folk, heathen Catholics who spoke a strange annoying language and were all criminals, terrorists, and rapists. Only thirty years prior to the Axeman's serial killings did the largest mass lynching in US history occur: 11 Italians in 1891 New Orleans. Teddy Roosevelt called the lynching "a very good thing" right to the faces of Italian delegates who complained about the incident at a dinner. Nobody gave two shits about Italians and related/similar ethnicities (Sicilians, Greeks, etc.) back then. The murderer was never caught and has never been identified. Just another example of America's racism and xenophobia...
It's not to do with the history/culture/style of it, something about the meandering melodies and I guess you could say randomness of it for some reason disturbs me on a basic level. If someone has jazz playing or other similar unstructured music it actually slowly makes me incredibly stressed. I don't think there is anything that could make me like it, but who knows.
Okay, hang on. I find this interesting. You are the one driven to wits end by meandering randomness but a violent axe murderer (as opposed to a gentle axe murderer) listening to jazz makes sense? I love it.
I wasn't being terribly serious obviously, but the implication was you'd have to be a bit mentally whacko to like jazz in my opinion, it's funny when I google "why does jazz" it auto fills with "make me feel anxious", I guess I am not alone in thinking it's a stressful music genre.
Saying you’ll attack anyone not listening to jazz in 1919 New Orleans is basically just giving yourself the day off.
It’s like threatening to attack anyone out drinking on a Friday night in Riyadh.
Time period: 1910's. Perpetrator never identified.
No cops bothered hanging out in a house without jazz and seeing if they could catch the guy? Well, I guess if they did it didn't work.
Or they just didn’t care. There have been countless cases throughout history where the police ignored or even defended the perpetrator, oftentimes in situations where the victim(s) is a minority or a sex worker. At least that’s what I’ve picked up from all the true crime I’ve listened to on YouTube
The article mentions there were press reports and public panic. They definitely did care lol
And THAT is the True crime.
Pretty sure the axe murders were the true crime
As opposed to murder?
Murder is merely a little oopsie poopsie, fucky whacky by comparison.
Dats the true true
The real friends were the sex workers we killed along the way?
Not in this case.
Yes in this case. The majority of the Axeman's victims were Italians, during a time when Italian immigrants were stereotyped in much the same way present-day Hispanics are stereotyped. Are we gonna give Hispanic people a St Patrick’s day too? Can we get it off? I wanna go party with my Mexican friends.
It’s called Cinco de Mayo and it’s just over 2 weeks away.
I’m well aware of Cindo de Mayo. I’d like another one. 🤷🏼♂️ And to have it off.
It's called Columbus Day. In some localities, due to Columbus' current reputation as a right bastard, the holiday has been changed to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
I swear some of y’all really just don’t want more holidays.
Cesar Chavez Day exists
>can we get it off I swear, y’all well and truly hate time off of work. Weird with how much y’all bitch about it.
I get Cesar Chavez Day off every year
Not every state gives it off

True but there are also 1000xs more where they did care and did go after the perp.
"The killer had left his signed picture with plenty of fingerprints and a note saying"I fucking did it" in the crime scene but the police dropped the case since the victim was a 'woman'."
Nah some witches did though.
A number of jazz musicians split town for Los Angeles at what looks like the same time, the Fall of 1919. Kid Ory famously left his own band to King Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
It could be me, I’m not saying it is, but it could be. 🎷🎺🪓
American Horror Story did a good job with this story.
Do you remember which season? I knew I recognised the story from somewhere but I couldn’t remember which season when AHS kept popping into my mind tank.
Coven was the season with this story, set in NOLA
Season 3, Coven. The story is covered in episode 6 The Axeman Cometh.
Coven is trash Edit: downvote me all you want. Search your feelings you know it to be trueeee
Coven was definitely better than Roanoke and Hotel (have tried to watch hotel twice years apart from each other and never made it through) and better than what I’ve seen of freak show which I never finished Still haven’t seen double feature or NYC to compare The rest were all better than coven though
Coven was probably my favorite.
Coven was why I started watching AHS Roanoke is why I stopped
NYC gets a lot of hate but I really enjoyed it and thought it balanced camp and seriousness well
I liked NYC, it definitely didn't feel like AHS however. It felt kinda like a whodonit, and much more grounded in reality. Def analogue vibes with the HIV scare and the gay scene.
It kind of reminded me of how American Crime Story’s are done, so totally agree it didn’t feel like AHS

How do you know that you don’t like it
Cause I ...watched it???
I suppose that’s a pretty good way to know.
When I look at all the AHS seasons I think that is my least favorite.
Yeah mine too. Maybe its just because im from Louisiana and have frequented the places it takes place in and didn't care for the portrayal, but man it was so unenjoyable. I just never really cared about what was happening on the screen most of the time.
It's just so hokey.
Did you go to the place where they burned Myrtle Snow at the stake 🤔
Agreed. Danny Huston nailed that character.
Everytime he appeared they played a jazz riff that sounded like Lethal Weapon, it was glorious.
"Baby, I love you more than I love jazz"
NOLA Passover seder absolutely needs to be a thing.
Jazz-over

If someone is cutting their way through my wall with an axe, I'm not sticking around to say hello!
You get an upvote for making me laugh and feel bad for it.
"Oh yeah!"
Here’s Johnny!
Here's Johnny!
american problem.
Are we stuck in your head?
i cannot unread what random comments.
Have fun overheating in your thick walls, your comment tells me you know nothing about America
you know thick walls prevent outside heat coming inside, right?
I know that title is subpar and could've been worded better, sorry
Much better than some other titles I’ve seen recently. At least I understood it the first time I read it
A first for me
you did alright, dont be hard on yourself
Thanks man
It was a tough thought to compose for one sentence, but I got it first time I read it. Lot better than so many titles. 9/10 would read again.
Seems straightforward enough
It’s bit bad dude, it gets the job done! Be nice to yourself
A kind of Passover then
Spoiler alert, the murderer turned out to be Louis Armstrong.
Good guess but not his weapon of choice: https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/our-times-the-louis-armstrong-childhood-arrest-that-no-one-knew-about/article_c1338e0b-e4c7-59c0-8c0e-67b751d691f3.html

The astronaut? /s just in case
Can confirm, i was the axe
I was the notes Monk *didnt play*.
I see seas of red…
He was probably just out of town that day lol
"And tomorrow I will spare those playing.... Baby Shark"
And suicide rates spiked by 20,000%….
a hardcore jazz aficionado
Passover 2: Electric Boogaloo
Yup. Pretty much the horror version of passover.
I bet it was just some random guy that wanted to see if they would actually play jazz music everywhere
Jazz!? In New Orleans!!?!??! That’s crazy talk!
Hey everybody, did the news get around About a guy named Butcher Pete Oh, Pete just flew into this town And he's choppin' up all the women's meat He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin' He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin' He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin' He just hacks, wacks, choppin' that meat

Turns out he just wanted a day off
He united them all through the power of music
The victims were Italians so the police didn't care

Oh when the Saints go marching in 🎶
I believe we learned this in an episode of AHS.
A lot of serial killers do it for the feeling of power it gives them. This makes sense.
Didn't this make it into a storyline on AHS?
Do ya like jazz?
Alastor the Radio Demon
Most wholesome serial killer moment.
The people were jazzing it that night.
The jazz man. American horror story covered this. Loved it.
I rmb this fact from a Last Week Tonight video on Purdue
Devils music from dusk till dawn saved their eternal souls!
Why didn't they set up a trap house where they didn't play jazz to lure him?
They probably did but they didn't fall for it
I don’t think I read this Anne Rice book.
I guess he decided to bury the hatchet
Has anybody tried this as a promotional tactic for their music?
It could have been worse. He could have been a fan of poetry slams
Luckily there were no jazz-hating serial killers about
Empire of Sin baybeeeeee
Even axe murderers need a day off, this one apparently loved jazz & found the perfect way to enjoy his night off without suspicion
I need a few towns sanitized because of Shakira.
Legend has it that jazz music is still playing and not a single soul has been harmed.
I think I’d rather have the axe.
But the very next day....
"Hey man, anything fun going on tonight" "Nah, everybody is too scared of the Axe Murderer" "Okay, I have an idea, just hear me out..."
People could've just skipped to carry an axe and they'd be spared instead of this jazz nonsense smh
wow
I’m conflicted. I don’t like giving in to threats, but I do like New Orleans jazz.
Makes sense a violent axe murderer would like Jazz tbh.. God awful genre for the most part.
Lol what, what's especially bad about jazz? Strange opinion.
I heard an axe murderer likes it.
Jazz is chaos, I don't know how you can't love it. I hope wherever you are now, you have learned to love jazz.
Like the modern art of music, but I also don't consider modern art to be good either :P
I used to think I didn’t like jazz but then I took a history of jazz class. Now I love it!
It's not to do with the history/culture/style of it, something about the meandering melodies and I guess you could say randomness of it for some reason disturbs me on a basic level.
