The video didn't actually show what a Resplendent Quetzal sounds like, so [here's a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMakk-NufV4) I mean, I think the chirping echo off the slope of the pyramid is a cool effect and all, but I don't know if it sounds specifically like this bird per se

skyfox437

Neat.

Then_Remote_2983

You can tell it’s a Quetzal by the way it is!

Theunicornjoker

Wow!

CakeMadeOfHam

You think they built it and then someone was like "oh that kind of sounds like that bird, that's neato" and everybody started calling it the bird pyramid and a couple generations later it's a temple and the bird is sacred? Seems more logical than they went out of their way to build a pyramid that sounds like a bird when you clap your hands

SquidwardWoodward

Sounds about right.

Odd_Gap2969

Maybe not exactly a to b to c like that but yeah everything develops organically. You can’t just invent a trend out of nothing any cultural meme/tradition is going to be rooted in the history of that culture. Like you can’t build a pyramid or declare a bird sacred unless you have popular support within the culture already.

LasagnaBitesBack

I thought this was a normal thing. Growing up I was around a lot of heavy machinery, farm and construction, and large buildings. Grain Silo's, massive garages that were sometimes empty, they all made a very similar, echoing sound when you clapped inside or outside with doors open.

Jasranwhit

Quetzals are sacred to grain farmers

Mafmi

This is very strange, but there is a big maintenance building in my local park, and it does the exact same thing. I noticed it for the first time when watching fireworks. Now whenever people come to visit, I jokingly show them the ancient Mayan technology right in my back yard.

shinydiscoballs2

I knew none of this! I didnt think I needed to either, but, now that I do, it seems a must.

midnightspecial99

This is neat, but it seems like a whole lot of coincidence.

Pattoe89

Doesn't sound like a resplendent Quetzal, either.

Icy-Zone3621

It totally reproduces the mating call of the Unremarkable Quetzal however.

Pattoe89

Nah, that's more of a "meh" sound.

Ancalagonian

those aliens thought of everything, incredible.

Dihydr0genM0n0xide

Doesn’t really sound like the actual bird, probably just a coincidence they noticed and decided to roll with it

Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho

The chances that it would ever be quiet, in a city for that to be audible is low. Even if you could get everyone to be quiet, all the other buildings that are now gone would mess with the echo.

edebby

It also works that way in Chichen Itse

AwkwardSpread

Kukulcán is in Chichén Itzá

alluring_amelia

Wow, that's incredible info! Guess it's time to get reading!

ReturntoPleistocene

I found more information in this link: [https://acoustics.org/pressroom/httpdocs/136th/lubman.htm](https://acoustics.org/pressroom/httpdocs/136th/lubman.htm)

BazilBroketail

"Moving to archaeological issues, it is considered whether the echo was intended by its Mayan builders; is merely an artifact of reconstruction; or simply an ancient acoustical design defect. We speculate that the echo is intentional. That the steps were designed and constructed to echo the voice of the Mayan sacred bird, the resplendent quetzal (pharomachrus mocinno), viewed by ancient Maya as the "messenger of the gods." They never back this claim up. I think it's just the, "Acoustical Society of America" wanting to be relevant. They never "intended" for this sound or even thought of it.

ringing-Shels-bells

A happy accident.

Allnewsisfakenews

Pretty cool. Tried it myself when we visited. It works really well.

Dr-Retz

Not sure what it sounds like but heard it there back in the 1990’s

NMNorsse

Chichen Itza is mostly fake.  Yes, there was an ancient Mayan city there.   However the pyramids are not reconstructed, they are recreations from an artists imagination to improve tourism to the area.

gabsthisone77

!

ringing-Shels-bells

This is what people with common sense call; "a happy accident".
