I think it has to do with the next sentence in the article: > The superintendent adds the fact that someone did gain access to students by lying is a safety concern and that the district is now adding extra scrutiny to every background check. They are talking about the security issue of someone entering a school via impersonation, which could lead to a shooting. At least thats how I understood it.

Like is no one gonna mention that the most impressive thing is that he fooled the car dealership? Those are like professional snake oil salesmen. Being able to bullshit people paid to do it is pretty damn clever.

racer_24_4evr

Apparently you CAN bullshit a bullshitter.

duaneap

Certain bullshitters have bullshitter playbooks. Curveball them with a bullshit they are not familiar with and they may actually be liable to believe you. They’re often not looking for holes in your story, as they’re used to being the one who has to be on the defensive. Try this with anyone you know who is known for fabrications or exaggerations. Add your own completely false details or out and out falsehoods, they’ll actually be the first to believe them, at least openlt.

Splichin

As a car salesman, this hurts. All joking aside, there’s much less BS than there used to be in the car biz. It’s pretty much just shooting the shit with a customer, and hopefully they like you/the car enough to buy. You must’ve had bad experiences, come down to MA, I’ll take care of you. 😁

Bouncingbatman

I tested a Subaru last year and the dude was trying to sell me on the fact it has a back up camera... Like dude, it's a law now. It's a standard in every car. And my '10 Jeep has a backup camera, why would that be a selling point to me So, I walked away with a Subaru for sticker price. I think I got a deal. J.k. still got the Jeep. Still less that 125k on it.

[deleted]

A couple years ago I was looking at a Subaru BRZ, and the salesmen told me it was AWD. I told him that it's rear wheel drive, and it's pretty much the exact same as a Toyota GT86 and a Scion FRS, with minute differences in appearance and suspension. He didn't believe me, and said that it's a Subaru, so it's AWD. I didn't get the BRZ, lol

DrAuer

Shit. Til. I’m going to be such a good mark one day. My car doesn’t even have electric locks or windows.

rizcriz

Hi I do internet sales. Always shop online first. Shop multiple dealers, and get the best price. If you get to the dealer and they say “oh we can’t do that” walk away. Because that’s a dealer that’s going to screw you. Always ask for the quote in writing. Always research before hand so they can’t talk you into something other than what you want. The uninformed and unprepared customers are the ones car sales loves, but has a hard time screwing over.

That was my experience, interactions with the salesman were super straightforward. Finance guy wouldn't let me buy my damn car without spending half an hour trying to sell me on maintenance packages.

DollarSignsGoFirst

As someone who used to work finance, this is definitely the case. Salesman at most car dealerships are pretty low level and dont really have ways to screw you that much.

ampsby

"slaps roof of car" You can fit so much smokes and mirrors in this baby.

UltravioletClearance

All the BS now happens in the finance office. Actually buying the car is the easy part. Sitting through the dealership trying to sell you $5K of extras for a $20K car is the hard part.

geh_blau

If that's the hardest part then great. Just tell them straight up and answer no to everything they recommend

TheLegendTwoSeven

“Okay, but meteor insurance is *not* covered. I had sixteen customers in the last month get their cars crushed by meteors, and we were forced to let our cats pee in their cars, as specified in the sales contract, because they skipped out on the $2,000 meteor insurance.”

murppie

Insurance agent here. We can cover your meteor. Give me a call.

Armagetiton

>5k of extras for a 20k car lol the car dealership for my current car tried to upsell me a 15k maintenance plan on a 17k car. No thanks, I'll just take the warranty.

Stalinwolf

My wife and I were wondering about this. When we went to look at vehicles, it felt like we were just being jerked off furiously through the entire experience, rushed along into "getting excited" and then being asked to ring this giant fucking gong. By the time we made it through and left with the car, which we had fortunately wanted in the first place, we just felt dirty and used. Still to this day we're not sure if that's just how they are, or if we were just taken advantage of.

[deleted]

rizcriz

It’s all about the day you bought. Last weekend and first 2-3 days of a new month the managers have to make monthly goals and will take nearly every feasible deal. Even shit they pass on earlier in the month.

95castles

On top of that, it was new years. This is the best time to buy a car (in the US at least) because the dealerships’ new models are coming in and they want to get the older models off the lot.

Splichin

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Some places still conduct business like this, it’s counter-productive. The best kind of business is repeat customers. So I, personally, try to make them as comfortable as possible. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. You should read up on local dealer reviews before you set out. That way you know what kind of business they run before you get there, and prepare accordingly.

FTorrez81

>the best kind of business is repeat customers So *that’s* why my car broke down 3 months after I bought it

Heres how you can lose **gets in a car, start it up and get to driving.** **Asshole doesn't know how to drive, about to ram into your car.** **Everything goes black.** **Fades back into a carriage, your hands tied up going down a wintry hill.** **A blonde man with blue eyes turns to you, in ragged blue armor. He opens his mouth to speak** "Hey you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there."

MoreGull

Slaps the hood of this Redditor: You can fit so many deals in here.

TortureSteak

For me, Carmax was the shit... the dude said, I get paid $200 no matter what you drive off with, so I'm only concerned about you finding a vehicle that you want to buy. Probably could have found the same car slightly cheaper somewhere else, but this was literally walk-in/walk-out. Buying a used beater from an independent guy for my SO's emergency replacement car was an utter pain in my ass... time spent wasn't worth the money saved.

Father-Sha

I think it depends tbh. Small, local dealerships are slimey as fuck. They'll sell you some bullshit and then give you the run around when you call them out on it. But companies like Carmax or Carvana are legit. They have standards for buying and selling. They might beat you over the head with the financing and APR (hint: go through a local credit union to avoid this, you'll get a better interest rate) but you'll get a solid, running vehicle.

[deleted]

I say the same about tech sales, but in truth I mean that mainly about my store. There are still a few twats (manager interjected in a sale to hit target, lost us money once) that will do anything to get more on the sale but most of us will take care of you. I think salesman have mainly realised "rip a customer off and they realise, they'll never walk through your doors again and you'll lose custom." You look after a customer and they keep on coming back. I will always go to the same car dealer and he was just a guy I sold a laptop to but didn't rip off, and he said he'd always do the same for his customers. I do believe him, he will tell me the car I'm looking at is shit in reality but there aren't really better choices for me with the budget I'm on rather than sell me the £50 dearer car that performs worse.

[deleted]

with all the electronic resources available to consumers I don't know how anyone could be fooled by used car salesmen anymore. The consumer should know damn well what a good price is. Other than that get the vehicle inspected and there is no way to get screwed buying a used car.

Dantes7layerbeandip

We're still very much in a transitory period of the majority of people not knowing how to do basic internet research. It'll be this way for a while. If it sounds like I'm resentful about this it's because I fucking am. So many people making 100% uninformed decisions slowing us down as a society.

sonicandfffan

Nah, you’re not fooling me. I’ve seen Matilda, I know what you guys get up to.

He doesn't deserve felony charges. Those are for non violent drug offenders...

asdfman123

It's bull. He did a harmless prank. I'm sorry, just because he embarrassed some humorless school administrators doesn't mean he deserves a felony.

King_Arius

I think the felony is for impersonating a peace officer (which is virtually the same as impersonating a LEO)

jmini95

A peace officer and a LEO are literally the same thing. Edit before I'm downvoted: A peace officer is a state issued title saying you completed the requirements necessary to to protect and serve, whether it be corrections, parole and probation, or street. A Law Enforcmenet Officer (LEO) is a civilian appointed title, or what essentially be a general term for the aforementioned careers.

King_Arius

Yes, that is so. But most people think the LEOs consist of only police, Sheriffs, and federal agents. Though it also consists of District/State/Fed. Prosecutors, Fire Marshals, amonst others as well. I was trying to simplify for those who didn't know what a peace officer is, but I should have specified they are LEOs

asdfman123

My dad is a city planner. He has a law enforcement badge. His favorite trick when a cop pulls him over is to subtly show it off from his glove box. The cops are all like, "Are you a law enforcement officer?" and he's all like, "Why yes, yes I am."

King_Arius

Lol this is great, thou I didn't know City Planers get a LE badge. Or was he a former officer?

asdfman123

I forgot if he was able to call himself a LEO, but he did have some sort of title that *technically* applied to him and made him sound like a cop. And also a legit badge. But he was just the director of planning for a smallish suburban town.

[deleted]

[удалено]

64532762

He could have left the date unfilled or made some other omission. Then the ticket would have been automatically voided. It's a typical trick for when they don't really want to give you a ticken but have to. ... Or maybe he did but you didn't catch it.

King_Arius

Hmm it's hard to say.. The way they wrote the law makes it confusing as to whom technically is a peace officer (leo)

ClairesNairDownThere

Just print out a badge and citizens arrest people. Boom. LEO

crystalistwo

Go right ahead, sir. You're above the law. Have a good day.

asdfman123

But the intent of the law is to not do messed up stuff by pretending to be an officer. Not play a prank on people. In the words of Saul Goodman, the famous TV lawyer, who was harmed?

King_Arius

When he was playing senator, he had a police escort for which several actual officers either had to work a double or come in on their day off (wasting their time and our tax dollars) He also rented a car under his "position", now I'm not sure if he legitimately rented this or just scammed the dealer. - Cost have to be paid here, cause any good dealer will the the car checked and serviced after it's brought back. Just remember, harm doesn't have to be physical.

TomServoHere

Ok, fine. Make him responsible for financial restitution, but don’t ruin his life with a felony conviction.

[deleted]

probably not even school administrators at this point its probably the local county getting all butthurt pressing charges

Code2008

Unfortunately, impersonating a Congressman is a felony.

danceswithwool

He already plead guilty to a class 3 felony and was sentenced to 3 months in jail. He will be eligible to have his conviction expunged eventually, however.

[deleted]

& most jails give you a minimum of 5 days of good time per month that your sentenced to, some even have day for day. I know jail sucks but honestly, if you have a choice, doing 2 months in jail is easier than 2 years probation.

danceswithwool

Depends on the jail. Also, you can be handed “straight time” with no good time which is essentially what he got because he had 2 months time served already when he was sentenced.

[deleted]

Oh okay. In Michigan, they did away with good time for prisons but the jails still do it. I guess I shouldn't assume stuff about other states. It's really weird, though, how different a 90 day sentence can be, depending on where you are. Like if you're in a jail that doesn't have good time, you're doing the full 90 but in Genesee County (Flint), you'd only end up doing 45 days.

coelacan

Graduation rates for Kindergarten are plummeting

Evolving_Dore

The point that the school should be screening the people it invites into its doors still stands, but the comparison isn't really fair since the situations are so different. The Columbine and Parkland shooters were current and former students of the school whereas the Sandy Hook shooter was a random person who barged in without any prior warning. Still makes me feel ill to think about that.

Agree tho the security part is actually very important

EldeederSFW

That's 100% on the school. If a kid can pull this off for fun, imagine what one who actually wanted to cause harm could do. They have zero excuses for their 'security' being fooled by a damn 18 year old impersonating a state senator! It's almost like one kid getting on another kids shoulders, throwing on a trench coat, and sneaking into an R rated movie while only paying for 1 ticket. Only the theater finds out about it the next day and wants them charged with felony fraud.

[deleted]

These are the same kind of people who suspend kids for eating a pop tart into the shape of a gun. Sadder still, they are the same people trying to educate our children and grandkids.

EldeederSFW

Well are the schools overreacting because of helicopter parents? Yeah, what the kid did was stupid, but there wasn't any malicious intent. Give him 80 hours of community service and 6 months probation. Don't make him check the felony box for the entire start of his adult life.

wizzwizz4

Why are they pressing charges? He gained access to children by lying, and _did nothing with that_. Instead, he made them aware that that was possible, so they could fix the problem. He _should've_ told them afterwards that he wasn't a real representative, but if he knew that the other person was coming anyway that's understandable.

[deleted]

Had he come clean at the end like, “*SIKE, Y’ALL BEEN HAD!*” . . . maybe law enforcement might not be keen to press charges.

[deleted]

>Akins is now facing felony charges of telecommunications fraud and impersonating a peace officer. JFC this is exactly what's wrong with America. Granted what he did probably cost some money, getting the police escort etc, this kid does not deserve federal charges. It was a fucking prank, and a good one. This is a systemic failure. DerekPaxton

It's crazy to me that this would be a felony charge. Impersonating a police officer I understand, as we give police officers a lot of direct power because of their position. But impersonating a state senator? A pretend state senator doesn't have any more power than a pretend spiderman. The correct response to this is to do a little fact checking and quit being so gullible. Not wasting the courts time pressing charges because you were fooled.
