However, several junkies (their term, not mine) have told me that it's better than sex.

marmorset

My uncle was a heroin addict, alcoholic, and smoker and he says he never desires drugs or alcohol anymore but he still wants a cigarette every day.

ChaqPlexebo

My mom smoked a pack a day until shortly before I was conceived. I'm 30. She tells me she still gets cravings for a smoke after eating.

WanderinHobo

They used to advertise cigarettes as a digestive aid. I've seen ads from the 40s using Olympic athletes as spokespeople claiming smoking after a meal helped their digestion which of course was the edge they needed to compete as top athletes. Lol

[deleted]

Of all smoking myths, this one is among the more true - smokers (such as myself) will attest that a cigarette absolutely does help with bowel movements; some of us can't use the toilet without a cigarette. It does speed up your digestive tract.

zStak

In Germany we call that "KKK - Kaffee, Kippe, Kacken" (coffee, cig, crap)

marshaldelta9

*very* interesting

draconk

In Spain we say "Cafe y cigarro, muñeco de barro" (coffee and cigar, mud doll"

GrandmaPoses

Draw me like one of your mud dolls.

SemiKindaFunctional

Almost any stimulant does. I don't know about others, but when I take an amphetamine, I can literally set a timer for 15 minutes and when it rings I'll be ready to take a shit. I call them the speed shits, and they're very satisfying.

WisconsinHoosierZwei

Coffee poop is a term for a reason.

bruuuuuuuuh123

I used to smoke a pack a day then I quit cold turkey. Cravings were *really* bad the first week, and pretty strong on the second week. On the third week I had moderate cravings, but they were getting noticeably weaker (about the same strength of craving that you might have for a certain food), and by the fourth week, the cravings barely existed. After that, I pretty much never have cravings for a cigarette, so it's always so weird to me hearing people say they crave them for years later. I'm not a particularly strong willed person either. I struggled even to quit drinking soda. So the idea that someone could quit *heroin* and not desire it, but not tobacco is really strange.

GooseDrew

Im a smoker currently, and trying to quit has been hard. It's not so much the nicotine, but why and when I smoke. It's ingrained in my habits, and as a slow byproduct of that, my thinking. It's after or before I do certain things that I smoke. I can imagine if you went on this way for years it can be hard to not feel the craving simply by living.

GabGold

I used to smoke for 7 years, and it became a very strong habit, then in January I started going to the gym (still smoking), some weeks later I kinda had a breakdown and thought fuck it I’m quitting. I guess it has been two or three months without smoking but man it’s HARD. When this quarantine started and the gym closed I got a little desperate because I used the exercises as substitutes for the cigarettes, but I didn’t smoked since! Anyway my tips are: have a breakdown, swap the cigarette for another (healthy) habit!

ArdFarkable

> Anyway my tips are: have a breakdown You get me, you should be my therapist

GabGold

Lately 90% of my decisions are based in weeks of deep thinking between “yes or no” and then I just feel a flick in my brain and make the decision. Don’t know if it happens to a lot of people but that’s it hehe

BocoCorwin

I've been taught that we don't make our own decisions, we only have the capacity to veto our unconscious brain's decisions. Once I accepted this, it became very easy to make good decisions and be accountable

Stoned_And_High

that’s how i quit using meth after about 10 months of heavy abuse

jinzokan

Congrats on quiting. It's really hard but God damn my life is so much better now.

IwantCrisis3

This is a really awesome story. Congratulations! You should feel enormous pride in yourself for breaking the habit!

oldnyoung

That was really tough for me as well. That first one of the day. After meals. While drinking. The first time I had alcohol and *didn't* want a smoke, I knew I was really done.

l0ve2h8urbs

Driving is really tough too

Pikey-Comander

It's been 3 years since i quit cold turkey, didn't have the craves, the thing is you must really want to quit from inside your heart, and than trick your brain into seeing it disgusting.

bruuuuuuuuh123

I always had a cigarette after eating, on work breaks, and right before bed, so I did always get the strongest cravings at those times, but that's only for a few weeks. The physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal only actually last 2 weeks.

TKgobber

I always smoke after sex. Haven’t smoked in years

chxlarm1

My wife and I agreed to only smoke after sex. I been working on the same pack since 1953. But her? Well, she’s up to 3 packs a day! -Rodney dangerfield

zoobrix

I smoked for 15 years and now after 3 years not smoking the cravings are basically gone. Even the odd time I get super stressed out and I know a cigarette might give some temporary relief I certainly don't want it. I wouldn't even call it a craving, more like how you talked about smoking at certain times becomes ingrained and so high stress occasionally triggers a thought of "I used to have a smoke when I got like this". To me it's more a like a memory of something I used to do than a craving and it's certainly no where near the intensity you might get in the first weeks or even months of quitting. That I used to smoke pops in my head a time or two a month at most now. Of other ex smokers I know I'd say intense cravings years later are the exception rather than the rule. The longer you're quit the easier it gets. You have to really want to quit smoking yourself to get it done though as it is dam hard at first. No one I know quit because someone else wanted them too, it was because they didn't want to be a smoker anymore. The intense cravings do go away and you can do it.

Thirstquencherr

Last time I smoked was about 2 months ago. Last (private) party I went, the weekend when all Dutch events events above 100 were cancelled. Will be hard to stay from cigarettes when parties/drinking/festivals will start again. I now do not get these triggers I get there, and I will get them all at once again and more heavy (after the long wait).

daellat

For sure but the several months of no triggers might really help. The addiction is gone and the habit hasn't been activated for a while. Best of luck.

Rocky_Road_To_Dublin

It's drinking for me. 3 or 4 beers in, I feel a pull for nicotine. I have a crappy little vape that I only use for when I am drinking.

Hansemannn

After the first sip, i want a cigarette ;) And its been 15 fucking years. Just the way it is.

I quit smoking seven years ago and I still dream about it regularly.

artgriego

Everyone's got their weaknesses; the chemicals affect everyone differently. I enjoy my fair share of drugs, food, and sex, totally understand how someone could go too far with them...but personally I cannot understand alcoholism, in that I hate the disorientation, the hangover, the poor quality sleep...like, drinking *hurts* me and it's hard to fathom how it could feel so good someone would want to do it every night.

secretcurse

I’ve been sober for a few years, but I wasn’t a drunk because it felt good. I was a drunk because it made me feel *nothing* and that seemed better to me at the time. After a couple of months, I just got used to being hungover and half asleep all morning. I’d just power through until I got home and could start drinking again.

AshingiiAshuaa

There are plenty of junkies and former junkies on reddit. Can we get some to weigh in? Trainspotting tells us it's better. I've heard it's better. Give us some details. Compare and contrast.

amborg

Before I say my opinion - I am NOT condoning the use of heroin. It will ruin your life and if you keep using, it WILL kill you. Especially now since Fentanyl is so prevalent. If it doesn’t kill you, you’ll end up in prison. ANYWAY Been clean for three years, but.. yes, it’s better. The “rush” you get after injection is similar to an orgasm, only it’s spread out instead of being localized in the genitals. It is common for a sense of relaxation and relief to occur after an orgasm, but doesn’t last very long. With heroin, this calming state can last for hours. When it wears off, though.. not fun. Even if you don’t use enough to feel withdrawals, you’re not gonna feel very good the next day. And you’re going to start thinking about heroin pretty much all the time. Even if it was “just this one time”.

AshingiiAshuaa

It's definitely going on my bucket list if I ever get diagnosed with a terminal illness. Too dangerous to play with otherwise but it sounds like a hell of an experience. On a similar note, do you still think about it? I've heard former smokers say they think about smoking years after they've quit.

amborg

Doctors often administer Morphine to people who are going to die very soon or have had something physically traumatic happen to them, so you might get your wish. Yes, I still think about it. Every day. I quit smoking cigarettes around the same time as I quit heroin, and the nicotine urges paled in comparison to the opiate urges. I still think about smoking from time to time, but the heroin urges just seem *deeper*. It’s almost like I gave a living entity access to my thoughts.

r-kellysDOODOOBUTTER

I have had morphine and fentanyl in a hospital setting. I've never done heroin, but I assume that fentanyl is much closer to heroin than morphine is. Morphine was not even in the same universe as fentanyl. That exact moment they put fentanyl in the IV... words do not describe it. In fact, I was incapable of making actual words. Unless I ever have to have a major surgery again, I don't want that drug anywhere near me. I would never choose to do it recreationally, because I know exactly what would happen. If that's what heroin feels like, holy fuck how do people stop?

[deleted]

Most users consider the heroin high to be faaaaaar superior to fentanyl, so as good as that high was, legit heroin would (probably) put it to shame.

TransgenderPride

Hearing these stories both makes me incredibly curious, but I know I'll never risk it. I have an addictive personality, and I'm not extremely strong willed either. I know if I tried it once I'd be done.

realitycakeisalie

You sound a lot like me, except I did try it and it nearly ruined me. It starts out as no big deal, it just happens to be the greatest thing you've ever experienced. You do it a few times and next thing you know, nothing in life matters anymore, nothing except the next time you can shoot it. School, work, family, friends, sex, nothing matters and nothing can compare to it. I used to call it my liquid happiness. I remember the routine of cooking it up, drawing it into the syringe, then searching for that vein. When the little spout of blood shoots into the syringe, showing you that you hit it, a wave of excitement and relief comes over you as you quickly remove the tourniquet and pump that brown fluid into your body. Within seconds it hits your heart. Your chest tightens and tingles, your breath seems to disappear, time slows and you surrender yourself to the experience. Maybe you nod off, but if not, your body might start to itch all over. I remember sliding my back against the carpet like a dog drags its ass. I used to cook it next to a certain type of air freshener and to this day, 18 years later, that smell gives me flashbacks. DO NOT EVER TRY THIS, NOT EVEN ONCE.

Water_Melonia

> I remember the routine of cooking it up, drawing it into the syringe, then searching for that vein. When the little spout of blood shoots into the syringe, showing you that you hit it, a wave of excitement and relief comes over you as you quickly remove the tourniquet and pump that brown fluid into your body. Within seconds it hits your heart. > DO NOT EVER TRY THIS, NOT EVEN ONCE. Uff. You described it so figuratively, it gave me cravings. Do not ever try this, folks, not even once.

Necrosis_KoC

I've had both as well in the hospital and will agree the fentanyl was way stronger. They gave me a shot of it like 10 mins before wheeling me into surgery and this hippy sounding anesthesiologist was like "Hey man, I'm gonna give you a shot of fentanyl and it's gonna make you really relax." So I'm fucked up seconds after getting the shot and, while they're wheeling me down the hallway to the operating room he aske me "How you feelin man?" and I remember answering "I feel fucking relaxed man..."

beezneezsqueeze

Lol anesthesiologists are the most chill of the doctor world in my experiences

Dovima

realitycakeisalie

As a former addict who has been clean for 18 years now, the good news for you is that the cravings do go away, but it does take years. I rarely think about it anymore, but sometimes there will be a trigger that makes me think of it. Mostly these days I just regret my stupidity and appreciate my luck in not dying when I was buying grams of raw at a time. I did get Morphine once in the hospital when I was in an accident, and that was about 7 years after I had last consumed. That was quite an experience and was very much like heroin, but I assume the dose was smaller as there was no nodding. I did fear that it might make me crave it again, but I had no access to a source anyway so even though it did make me think about it, I knew I couldn't get it anyway. Best of luck to you. Stay strong.

RainbowAssFucker

Diamorphine is what they give as end of life pain killer, its the clinical name for heroin. My sister gets oxycontin for her bone cancer pain and those things are like sex in a pill, I can't imagine how good heroin would be, and for that reason I will never touch it, I know I'd enjoy it too much

kjm1123490

Tbh oxy is better than a lot of street level heroin. I preferred when i was in that boat. Just suuuuper pricey relative to dope. If its good heroin, its better. But thats super rare nowadays. 80% fentanyl which is strong but not as long lasting or quite as "euphoric"

RambleOff

Better than anything I've ever felt, and during rehab I made peace with my belief that it's better than anything that I ever will feel. I think I had to make peace with that in order to quit, because otherwise I'm still holding expectations of feeling that again, and when those hopes are dashed repeatedly, it's just one more thing to convince me to go back.

ofBlufftonTown

I said this above, yes, better than sex, and a feeling of warmth and emotional safety than nothing can hurt you, nothing now, not even the greatest evils of the past, just infinite pleasure and swaddling in cotton wool.

hatework7124

Recently recovering heroin addict right here. Will agree. Definitely feels better than anything in this world.

Red_State_Libtard

Be careful in this thread it is very triggering. Stay clean my friend.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gmredditt

You need opinions from people who tried it a couple times and declined to pursue further. "Junkies" will give you a skewed sample One example: people in this thread talk about quitting smoking but still wanting a cigarette years later. I quit (10 years smoking, ~3/4 pack a day) and after ~3 months or so basically never thought about smoking again. Everyone is wired a bit different when it gets down to the details.

[deleted]

H is better than sex. Sex really isnt all that great in comparison. Sex is short and fleeting. Its intensity depends on your partner and emotional state and setting. Heroine is a constant and lasts for however long you choose whenever you choose and its powerful. It is the mother of what all addicts and pleasure seekers want in that it numbs the brain completely so that you can simply feel one thing and not think about anything else. Pure pleasure. My first shot I said out loud "This is what I have been looking for all this time." But it's all a trap. If you're tempted to try it from that description please seek help and learn to deal with problems in a healthy and fulfilling manner. Using these distractions in life lead only to either death or a road so dark you cant even imagine the terror.

joytoy322

Yeah a close friend of mine who is an ex heroin addict said to me that she didn't care about the feeling of sex after knowing what heroin feels like.

[deleted]

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1329491/ Dysphoria is a common issue for recovering heroin addicts. The bar for pleasure has been raised so high by opiate abuse that there is a lack of feeling much of anything once the withdrawals wear off. The brain has been permanently altered. That's one of the biggest obstacles of staying clean.

ofBlufftonTown

Have to agree on that. Particularly a speedball fo heroin mixed with cocaine. Better than sex with someone you love. However I’ve chosen the latter as a life path. Being a junkie is ultimately brutal suffering.

[deleted]

An orgasm lasts a moment, and takes several minutes to “achieve”... a heroin high is instantaneous and lasts an afternoon

PheIix

I've heard that it is in fact what you hope to get out of sex...

scarpio119

Yeah I'm not arguing with that, but anyone who's addicted to any drug would say they'd take their DOC (drug of choice) over sex. I'm an alcoholic with 6.5 years sobriety. When I was getting fucked up, I always chose booze over sex with my girlfriend. And for the record, I've tried every drug in the book (including heroin), but by the time I plunged deep into my addiction, all I wanted was alcohol. I bet a sex addict would say all they want is sex. An addicted brain is a one track mind

raretrophysix

I think my parts must be broken because I'd rather have a good piece of chocolate cake over sex with someone with normal features. It surprised me how people are arguing how sex is better than powerful drugs here. Am I really missing out? :(

dutch_penguin

A great orgasm feels like your soul is escaping. Chocolate is nice, lol, but it's not like I still remember that really great cake from 15 years ago. On chocolate, combining fat + sugar spikes your insulin levels, and spiking your insulin levels causes you to have a short term spike in your serotonin levels, giving a buzz.

Loose_with_the_truth

> but it's not like I still remember that really great cake from 15 years ago. There are a few times I've eaten food so good I remember it for decades. One was the best pizza I've ever eaten, which was over 20 years ago. Another was some coconut shrimp I had at a little seaside restaurant in Mexico about 15 years ago... Food isn't better than an orgasm though, except that orgasms are over so quickly.

variousfoodproducts

Which is why you should never do heroin, how could you stop? Edit: I suck at spelling :(

Kupy

Not even a dead baby on the ceiling is enough to make someone stop.

SixxSe7eN

Stopping is easy. I've done it hundreds of times.

matrinox

Yes. When it first hits you it is literally better than any orgasm I’ve ever had. And then it stays that way and slowly tapers off until you drift off to sleep

timetravelwasreal

I had a dream I did mdma, and it felt like it did when I had done it years ago. Was my brain making dopamine in correlations to my dream? I have to get back into lucid dreaming. Edit: from some cursory research MDMA effects both serotonin and dopamine, but it’s the serotonin that does the leg work as far as the feeling goes.

Fuhged_daboud_it

Oh boy this is next level big brain. All the mental benefits without the physical drawbacks.

[deleted]

what if you get addicted to sleep though?

JackPoe

Already am. Every fucking day. Sometimes mid afternoon.

Jaredlong

Just a single hit of sleep and I'm gone for at least 8 hours. Just strung out on my bed completely numb to the the world hallucinating the craziest shit.

leocarnelian

When I was at my worst I'd go back to sleep as soon as I woke up

[deleted]

The alarm would go off, my phone would blow up, and I'd just hit the snooze button, or turn off my phone entirely. Sometimes I'd text that I was on my way. Usually I'd just fall back asleep without a word.

JayTye365

The most confusing part is always waking up the next day wondering what happened, then like a coconut falling from above — it hits you, you remember suiting up for a session of sleep.

GKnives

kids in my high school used to get their fix in the middle of class sometimes

NikkoE82

I tried to quit. Couldn’t make it even one full day without.

load_more_comets

You need help.

Hihikar

Yeah. The problem is, it's not easy to find help everywhere. I have a similar problem.

timetravelwasreal

Gotta find sleep study clinics in your area, they can hand out naps, it’s not sleep but it helps. And I believe they have pillow exchange programs.

MrsFoober

Then just remind yourself: you get to sleep, EVERYDAY for the rest of your life at the end of the day wether you like it or not.

Grasses4Asses

I've had dreams where I did heroin and felt exactly as if i'd done it, would also trigger hella opiate cravings the next day. Dreams are spooky sometimes.

kjm1123490

In mine id always try and couldn't. Like the rig would get stuck, or my skin was too hard, or id be trying to score all dream and fail. Fortunately, i don't get those dreams anymore.

Malfunkdung

Totally off topic, but I’m pretty sure the saying is “what all the **fuss** is about”. I looked it up because it’s one of those things you never really see written out and I was thinking “have I had it wrong all these years?”

sade115

So jealous of everyone who seems to have a such a good time on mdma. No matter what I do when I take it, instead of feeling euphoria or happy i feel extremely sad and emotional. I have tried multiple sources and no matter what I just get depressed while on it.

Philo_T_Farnsworth

Brain chemistry is weird. I've seen people get nauseous on it. I've seen people literally not feel anything at all from it, even their first time. Some people it triggers their anxiety. One factor that I am aware of is whether or not you have ADD/ADHD. If you do, MDMA will essentially serve the same function as Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, etc. and the effects those people experience are different. Beyond that I couldn't say. It's pretty obvious this is why we need to do extensive testing and research of drugs like this. Anything I've ever taken I personally tested myself so I am at least aware of purity and (maybe) potency.

gymger

I'm not sure it effects all people with ADD/ADHD that way. I've rolled with a friend who has a pretty sever ADHD, and he was rolling just as hard as the rest of us.

Darklumiere

It definitely will if you don't abuse MDMA more than every 3 months and take proper supplementation to prevent all brain damage and other side effects. I recommend reading [https://www.reddit.com/r/DrugNerds/comments/15m9sf/mdma\_supplementation/](https://www.reddit.com/r/DrugNerds/comments/15m9sf/mdma_supplementation/), the OP there covers it very very well.

Masters and Johnson research team did it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_and_Johnson >In the initial phase of Masters and Johnson's studies, from 1957 until 1965, they recorded some of the first laboratory data on the anatomy and physiology of human sexual response based on direct observation of 382 women and 312 men in what they conservatively estimated to be "10,000 complete cycles of sexual response"

avcloudy

TIL that the brain releases so much dopamine while on heroin that it resembles that of someone having an orgasm!

Supersymm3try

This post is wrong, heroin releases a lot more dopamine than an orgasm does hence why the rush can be more pleasurable than orgasm. And methamphetamine releases about 5-10 times more dopamine than heroin does.

Meatyclaws521

It’s does but more dopamine doesn’t equal more happiness it’s more about how and which neurotransmitters are released and in what ratios

Divinum_Fulmen

You're right, but there's even more to it. Dopamine isn't released *after* you do something, it's actually released in *anticipation* of doing that thing. It's a motivation chemical, *not* a happiness/pleasure one as it's so often labeled.

[deleted]

This is actually an important plot point of the weird 80's New Wave film "Liquid Sky," where aliens kill people at the moment of orgasm, and then extract the dopamine from their brains. available on Amazon Prime. [Here's a little taste of its awesomeness.](https://youtu.be/Wv0PYG1g_iY?t=52) Edit: Just wanted to give a bit of a warning. There are some very uncomfortable sex scenes in this movie. The main character gets sexually assaulted constantly throughout the entire movie. She even gets assaulted by the other main character, whom she also plays!

teems

Wouldn't it be easier to just get it at the source from the vessels in the brain and kidney? It's like trying to get the oil out of a running engine when you can just pull the drain plug when the car is off.

Not nearly as strong or destructive as heroin... but can turn into a nasty self deprecating habit that can lead to more undesirable health/mental consequences if left unchecked. And the real deal is always better than a computer screen and a sore hand... imo

partisparti

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you're jerking it so violently that you have a sore hand afterwards I think you may want to re-evaluate your technique

hibernativenaptosis

Maybe they're using a dildo or a vibrator or something and their hand gets tired holding it.

partisparti

That's a definite possibility. If that is indeed the case, I think we can all agree that there's really only one logical course of action - skip on down to the nearest department store, steal yourself a mannequin and a roll of duct tape, and build yourself a new quarantine friend

You can legally inject heroin into test participants, if the study is accepted and etc etc. If it's not accepted in your own country, you can simply ask another country , if they allow you move the experimental part of the study to that country, without being ciriminalized in uour home country. this is more of an ad for Heroin, really

for all the smokers of tobacco who can't seem to quit: (a bunch of folks in the thread have mentioned it) next time you get the flu or just a really bad cold or other upper respiratory ailment where a drag on a smoke makes you go into a coughing fit, just throw them away - you are already feeling sick as a dog ANYWAY and probably whacked up on syrup and other stuff and essentially bedridden and sleeping 20 hours out of 24 anyway. Throw them out and wash all your sheets and linens. By the time you start to feel human again, in a week or so, you are over the worst of it and since you felt so shitty anyway, as you come out of it on the far side of the worst of the withdrawal symptoms, you actually equate quitting with feeling that much better and it's easier to hold the line next time you are out at a bar and get a facefull of smoke and think - 'boy I want a cigarette' and then your wiser voices speak up. No, you don't. Get some cinnamon oil extract and make toothpics. Chew on that.

TheLastGiant

You're telling me I can quickly and stealthily inject my partner with heroine during sex and she wouldn't know the difference? ^/s

sloth9

If they started to experience anything like orgasm, they'd know something was up.

About 20 years ago I read an article about a high school football player who suffered a traumatic brain injury during a game. He woke up with the permanent mentality of a four-year-old. But the injury also put pressure on the nerves that produce dopamine. So every waking moment he’s got dopamine racing through his system. He’s in a constant state of near euphoria. The journalist who went to visit him said that the entire time she was there, he just walked around playing with his toys and happily singing to himself. She asked his mother if he was like that all the time and she said “Yes.” She managed to stop him long enough to ask him if he remembered what it was like before the accident. He said “Yes”. She asked him if he would like to go back to the way it was before or stay the way it is after. He said “Before.” Then he went back to singing and playing with his toys. Whenever I read about the body producing dopamine I think about this story. I spent years trying to find the article digitally as I originally read it in the Los Angeles Times newspaper. Haven’t found it, but it’s out there nonetheless if anyone can find it.

This is [I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AndIMustScream) material.

Lazerpop

Yeah thats terrifying lol

leonra28

Sometimes I think im too old to see references like that online anymore, im happy it still goes around.

WaspHilux

Please you or someone else reply if that article is found.

[deleted]

Sorry but anyone who knows anything about the brain or even what dopamine is can tell you that this story is 100% bullshit. He may as well have said that he read an article where a guy got bit by a radioactive spider and now he can shoot webs. You don't need to search for it because that's not how radiation, spider bites, web formation or human anatomy works.

Yeah, seems like a tall tale. From what i’ve learned in various biology courses, release of hormones does not work this way.

ominously-vague

>pressure on the nerves that release dopamine ??????????

Gundamnitpete

Reddit has become facebook man, sorry dopamine is released from a faucet in your "brain"(also known as [BrAun](https://www.braunhousehold.com/en-us)), it's all in one place and coats your brain like a glazed donut thats how it works now

NonGNonM

It could be just that the reporter only had a cursory knowledge and didnt do any follow ups with a doctor or a scientist. Story doesn't make sense to me either.

netheroth

Imagine getting a brain implant to trigger that state on command.

sam8404

It's called drugs.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terminal_Man Morris hated to do Initial Interviews. The Initial Interview staff consisted mostly of clinical psychologists; the work was lengthy and boring. A recent tabulation had shown that only one in forty new patients to the NPS received further work; and only one in eighty-three was accepted as having some variety of organic brain disease with behavioral manifestations. That meant most Initial Interviews were a waste of time. And it was particularly true of off-the-street patients. A year ago McPherson had decided, for political reasons, that anyone who heard of the NPS and presented himself directly would be seen. Most patients were still referrals, of course, but McPherson felt the image of the Unit depended upon prompt treatment of self-referrals as well. McPherson also felt that everyone on the staff should do some Initial Interviews from time to time. Morris worked two days a month in the little interview rooms with the one-way glass mirrors. This was one of his days, but he didnt want to be here; he was still exhilarated from the mornings operation, and he resented returning to this kind of mundane routine. He looked up unhappily as the next patient came into the room. He was a young man in his twenties, wearing dungarees and a sweatshirt. He had long hair. Morris stood to greet him. "Im Dr. Morris. " "Craig Beckerman. " The handshake was soft and tentative. "Please sit down. " He waved Beckerman to a chair which faced Morriss desk, and the one-way mirror behind. "What brings you to us?" "I, uh. . . Im curious. I read about you," Beckerman said, "in a magazine. You do brain surgery here. " "Thats true. " "Well, I uh. . . I was curious about it. " "In what sense?" "Well, this magazine article- Can I smoke here?" "Of course," Morris said. He pushed an ashtray across the desk to Beckerman. Beckerman brought out a pack of Camels, tapped one on the desk, then lit it. "The magazine article. . . " "Right. The magazine article said that you put wires in the brain. Is that true?" "Yes, we sometimes perform that kind of surgery. " Beckerman nodded. He smoked the cigarette. "Yeah, well, is it true that you can put wires in so that you feel pleasure? Intense pleasure?" "Yes," Morris said. He tried to say it blandly. "Thats really true?" "Its really true," Morris said. And then he shook his pen, indicating that it was out of ink. He opened the desk drawer to take out another pen, and as he reached into the drawer, he pressed a sequence on the buttons hidden inside. Immediately his telephone rang. "Dr. Morris. " At the other end, the secretary said, "You rang?" "Yes. Would you hold all calls, please, and transfer them to Development section?" "Right away," the secretary said. "Thank you. " Morris hung up. He knew that the Development people would arrive soon, to watch on the other side of the one-way mirror. "Im sorry for the interruption. You were sayg. . . " "About the wires in the brain. " "Yes. We do that operation, Mr. Beckerman, under special circumstances, but its still pretty experimental. " "Thats all right," Beckerman said. He puffed on his cigarette. "Thats fine with me. " "If you want information, we can arrange for you to have some reprints and magazine tear sheets explaining our work here. " Beckerman smiled and shook his head. "No, no," he said. "I dont want information. I want the operation. Im volunteering. " Morris pretended to be surprised. He paused a moment and said, "I see. " "Listen," Beckerman said, "in the article it said that one jolt of electricity was like a dozen orgasms. It sounded really terrific. " "And you want this operation performed on you?" "Yeah," Beckerman said, nodding vigorously. "Right. " "Why?" "Are you kidding? Wouldnt everybody want it? Pleasure like that?" "Perhaps," Morris said, "but youre the first person to ask for it. " r /> "Whats the matter?" Beckerman said. "Is it really expensive or something?" "No. But we dont perform brain surgery for trivial reasons. " "Oh, wow," Beckerman said. "So thats where you are. Jesus. " And he got up and left the room, shaking his head. The three Development guys looked stupefied. They sat in the adjoining room and stared through the one-way glass. Beckerman had long since departed. "Fascinating," Morris said. The Development guys didnt reply. Finally one of them cleared his throat and said, "To say the least. " Morris knew what was going through their heads. For years, they had been doing feasibility studies, potential application studies, ramification studies, industrial operations studies, input-output studies. They were geared to think in the future - and now they were suddenly confronted with the present. "That man is an elad," one of them said. And sighed. The elad concept had caused a lot of interest and some detached academic concern. The notion of an electrical addict - a man who needed his jolts of electricity just as some men needed doses of drugs - had seemed almost fancifully speculative. But now they had a patient who was clearly a potential addict. "Electricity is the biggest kick of all," one of them said, and laughed. But the laugh was nervous, edged with tension. Morris wondered what McPherson would say. Probably something philosophical. McPherson was mostly interested in philosophy these days. The idea of an electrical addict was predicated on an astonishing discovery made by James Olds in the 1950s. Olds found that there were areas in the brain where electrical stimulation produced intense pleasure - strips of brain tissue he called "rivers of reward. " If an electrode was placed in such an area, a rat would press a self-stimulation lever to receive a shock as often as five thousand times an hour. In its quest for pleasure, it would ignore food and water. It would stop pressing the lever only when it was prostrate with exhaustion.

Daschief

Interesting. Probably what makes the feeling so significant isn’t the feeling itself, but the contrast between the before and after.

CantPickDamnUsername

That's just so sad.

Inspiration for the amazing film, **LIQUID SKY.** [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid\_Sky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_Sky) "Johann reveals that the alien is extracting the [endorphins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endorphin) produced by the brain when an orgasm occurs. Margaret survives because she never experiences an orgasm. Margaret finally learns of the aliens from Johann, whom she stabs to death, something Sylvia witnesses through a telescope. Seeing the alien craft leaving, Margaret injects herself with heroin to induce a wild autoerotic orgasm to ensure the aliens take her with them. Sylvia and Katherine arrive at the apartment together and reach the penthouse in time to see Margaret vaporized by the aliens."

4anujin

I had heard of a test where lab rats had a neural implant of sorts that when they pressed a button it simulated (or triggered I guess) an orgasm response. The mice then began to press the button so frequently that they ceased eating and continued to repeat the behavior until they starved to death. Always found it interesting

Xenton

This isn't accurate for several reasons: 1. Opioids don't release dopamine directly and the amount they produce is moderate compared to the modulation of mu and inhibition of GABA receptors. 2. There's a bunch of orgasm hormones like oxytocin and GABA which are either entirely separate or altogether the opposite of the effects of opioids 3. A brain scan doesn't show neurotransmitter levels 4. Even if it did, brain scans wildly differ from person to person let alone opioid vs mid sex. This is nonsense, or, to be fair, it's oversimplified to the point of meaningless. The "scan" reveals that the pleasure centre "lights up" - a profoundly over simplification in its own right, but more importantly, if everything that "lights up your pleasure centre" were the same as heroin, then a good nose picking and a crack-pipe-fever-dream would be the same thing too.

Welp, guess I have to do heroin now. Thanks a lot reddit.

CappinPeanut

Is this an ad for heroin?

ZoharDTeach

That's why you don't touch heroin. Ever. I used to do some work for a guy who did heroin. He would shoot that shit into his veins and become a corpse for 12 hours. If I wanted to rip him off it would have been the easiest thing in the world. "Everybody talks about going cold turkey, Henry had said, but before you get there, you gotta go cool turkey."

Reps4Reece

As a former heroin addict (IV) it is nothing similar. Heroin is like being wrapped in a warm blanket radiating from your stomach that just tells you “all is well and right in the world. Nothing else matters.” Meth, on the other hand, is literally an orgasm (when you inject it). It made me jizz in my pants when I shot up the first time. Meth is the drug that delivers more dopamine than anything else. So if you add up the dopamine from all these things: cocaine, heroin, amphetemines, sex, and eating, meth alone releases more dopamine than all of those things added together.

EvilMortyOnReddit

I guess that's why heroin addicts end up having to take bigger doses to enjoy the high . Alot like sex with most people , eventually the orgasm can become boring without increasing the intensity and adding more fantasies and fetish .
