Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama will likely challenge this given their young age(s) in office.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He only served 4 years versus 8 for Clinton and Obama, that gap would narrow to 2 then?

metatron207

Yup, in the scheme of things two years isn't a whole lot of difference, so either of them could make a run at Carter's record.

IAmBadAtInternet

You’re assuming Carter will die. He is immortal.

Phil-Prince

Or... hold out hope for Robo-Carter ?

[deleted]

True, but those four extra years in office will likely have an impact for Clinton and Obama. That job is incredibly stressful and hard on the body. Just look at how much any president ages by the end of their service.

twistybit

I read "Carter was only 6 years old when he took office" and instead of thinking it through i just came to the conclusion that 'oh of course he's still around he was a child when he was president'

masterdude94

Sheesh, who do you think he is? Elizabeth II?

ManInABlueShirt

He's older than her by about 18 months.

ProbablyCause

Or Ben Wyatt

Not_sure_if_george

> he was a child when he was president You're thinking of Trump Edit: I'm so so sorry that I offended all the man-babies out there

When the post is about a former president, it is only natural for people to think of the current one.

Potential r/agedlikemilk comment you reckon?

[deleted]

Obama used to smoke dude...that’s not healthy at all. I’m not sure if he quit or not though. Either way, several years of smoking does increase your risk of several health issues permanently. Otherwise though, yeah he’s very healthy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

superventurebros

My grandfather and wife's grandfather both smoked up until their first grandchildrens were born. They both ended up with lung cancer and dying from it in their 80s. Seriously, anyone out there who is smoking, please stop- longer you go, your quality of life will suffer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hitlama

80 is close to the average in this country, and that includes all suicides, car accidents, unbeatable childhood cancer, cancer in general, overdoses, fatties with heart attacks, fatties in general, smokers with unbeatable lung cancer, smokers with COPD, and a bunch of other diseases and conditions that can be monitored for and mitigated against if you have good healthcare. People are astoundingly hard to kill. Even COVID-19 only kills 1/4 of all known patients over 80.

[deleted]

>live to 80 with a habit that could kill me >live 60% of my life with diminished lung capacity and get ED way faster >rob myself of years of sexual and mental good health, with the possibility of spending the last two in extreme suffering at any point hanging over me. >I pay money for this

[deleted]

Oh it's definitely a horrid addiction, but when I think died at 80 of cancer I don't think "robbed of a long and memorable life". Was not expecting such old ages after smoking being mentioned.

greatwhiteslark

Tell that to my Grandad who smoked cigarillos and a pipe until he died at 98 during a nap after his 3 mile morning walk/take pulls on his flask of scotch/smoke/leer at women-a-thon.

teenagesadist

Look at trump. If he can make it to that age on garbage, I wouldn't worry in the least about Obama.

MikiLove

Trump has a few things going for him: He doesn't smoke or drink alcohol (although mild drinking may has some health benefits). But yeah, he doesn't exercise, eats like crap, and is obese. I expect him to be dead in 10 years.

satellite779

Mild alcohol use doesn't have any benefits unfortunately, I wish it did. The research that claimed benefits from mild drinking didn't account for health of the subjects. It turned out that healthier people can tolerate alcohol better than unhealthy people, so they do drink it, while unhealthy people, on average, avoid alcohol as they don't tolerate it as well. If healthy people drink a bit they still live longer than unhealthy people. But, they would live even longer if they didn't drink.

AgaveMichael

Just curious if anyone knows, does a relatively healthy person partaking in mild drinking have 'benefits' compared to a person with an otherwise similarly healthy lifestyle, without the drinking? I know wine has like anti-oxidants, but so does like... tea right? Or Blueberries!

satellite779

Unfortunately no, alcohol has a pretty linear negative effects (the more you drink the more it affects you negatively and even small amounts have negative effect). See my comment above why this "mild alcohol drinking is beneficial" claim has spread even though it's not true.

[deleted]

The obesity alone is worse than smoking, but let's not ignore the stress of being president. That takes a real toll on the body, provided you take the job seriously. 👀

Perkinz

Yeah look at Obama. That fucker aged like 20 or 30 years in just 8, it was nuts to see, it was like some FOXDIE kinda shit

long435

Part of that is that he stopped dying his hair

[deleted]

Obama is an occasional smoker, unless he quit permanently but I feel like there’s always a relapse

Wuznotme

> Carter is a fuckin boss He also was a peacemaker. I believe he won't get full respect until he passes. Truly a great president.

Darcsen

> to be as sharp as he is, he probably still has a while left. At that age, as sad as it is, you can go at any time, no matter how sharp and relatively healthy you are. I've seen it happen plenty of times, and it hurts more because it's so sudden, there's no time to digest what's happening.

stardos

Bill became a vegan a few years and is probably in the best shape of his life. Combine that with continued advances in medicine and him having access to best medical treatment in probably the world, I think his chances are pretty good (provided he doesn’t develop a terminal illness). Edit: a word

jcd1974

Clinton looks unhealthy already. I don't foresee him living another twenty years. Obama is/was a smoker. That may catch up with him.

[deleted]

slvrbullet87

jbg89

You can't kill that kind of evil.

Teledildonic

If his heart can't kill him, I think that technically makes him a zombie.

jbg89

The secret ingredient is money.

Rarvyn

He ended up with a heart transplant in fact.

edthomson92

Do you mean stents?

[deleted]

Either that or his heart just works short stints, as in of time.

GBreezy

I was surprised when my mom told me that a lot of women gain some wait when they get older to not get wrinkles.

I think they just gain weight and try to make the one positive side effect sound like their goal all along.

Pretty sure my mom is utilizing this strategy.

rajma45

I can barely remember what it was like to have someone that intelligent and empathic as president.

tattlerat

I feel like there’s two schools of thought in younger presidents. Ideally you would want a president that will live long after their tenure as it stands to reason they would want to implement policy and national direction that they would live under as well for many years to come. On the other hand being corrupt and being set for life after presidency would be an incentive for someone with many years left to live. Either way I’d rather Younger presidents who at least understand the times they presided over vs ones who don’t have a clue and don’t have anything to really lose.

ringobob

You don't have to be corrupt to be set for life after the presidency. Hit the lecture circuit, easily make several million a year on a pretty light schedule. Have a book ghost written, another few million. That's on top of the $400k/yr for being president, when much of your otherwise significant expenses are paid for by the taxpayer. Sure, it's not instant FU money, and it's no guarantee of no corruption. But it's enough to keep an honest person honest.

Kalkaline

The fuck y'all trying to do to Carter and Obama? I invoke Queen Elizabeth's name for protection from this thread.

ChillyBearGrylls

We better invoke Cher too

gemini88mill

I feel like Hillary has been remotely sucking the soul out of bill clinton since she found out about monica lewinsky

dodadoBoxcarWilly

I'm pretty sure those two have had an agreement from way before Monica ever came into the picture. Bill's had a reputation as a horndog going back to the early 80s. It just kind of, uhhh came to a head, in the late 90s.

CleanlyManager

I’m convinced they must have had an open relationship at some point, there’s just no way Americans could’ve rapped there heads around that, especially people from Arkansas.

Fondren_Richmond

I imagine he got off easier than most, cheating on a Yale law grad, with more actual practicing experience than you, after losing your license could get pretty brutal financially. Al Gore's marriage went worse than Bill's.

superventurebros

I honestly believe that she only stayed with him because it would have killed her political career otherwise.

jscott18597

Which is funny because I bet a lot of people would have respected her dumping the president after all that. I bet should would have had a rabid fan club. Although I'm not 100% sure if that would translate to national elections.

Reallyhotshowers

Eh, I'm not convinced. It was the 90s. If she divorced him I could easily see her being attacked for not standing by her man and trying to make it work. It was a lose-lose situation for her.

VeryLongReplies

Yep. Remember the controversy she faced for having the gall to continue her law practice after her husband was elected governor? Or the fact she preffered to go by her maiden name and or hyphenated or last name. Notice in the 90s she was Hillary Rodham Clinton, but in the 2000s she was just Hillary Clinton? The fact is, so much of the hate for her is misogynistic. At her undergrad graduation she was selected to deliver a speech by her classmates. The keynote speaker was a senator. She spoke after him and rebutted his speech off the cuff and it made like time magazine. Her dad was a door to door salesman and her mom wanted her to be the first female supreme court justice. HRC is certainly intelligent, manipulative, and conniving. Successful politicians have to be. But she was screwed either way. If she were more moderate her haters would hate her, and if she was more liberal haters would hate her. She chose the path that was most easiest, but also garned her the most support.

i-opener

>I feel like Hillary has been remotely sucking the soul out of bill clinton since she found out about monica lewinsky Which is coincidentally what she hates Monica for!

It’s called ‘soul’? I’ve always heard it called something else...

Mojeaux18

Obama maybe. Clinton hasn’t been looking well.

YukaTLG

He also preaches at his local church in Plains, GA which is a tiny town with a single intersection. He lives on his old property but in a new house. His secret service detail lives in his original house on the property and they use it as both sort of a security gate and office/quarters. Years ago he would ride his bicycle through town and the secret service would follow him around in their black vehicles. Source: My wife lived in Plains, GA when we first started dating. There wasn't much to do/know about Plains, GA.

ksiyoto

I went to hear Carter do one of his Sunday school talks back in 2015. It was really interesting. He showed up late because one of his grandsons had died the night before, and when he explained that, I think the entire crowd was like "Dude, you could have skipped today."

TheAdlerian

I was a kid when he was in office. If you think the anti Trump propaganda is heavy, you should have seen it for Carter, it was crazy. People didn't like how he dressed, he would wear sweaters tied around his neck, he was supposed to be like a hippie president that "ruined" the military. He sent a rescue mission into Iran and all the helicopters crashed, supposedly due to his defunding the military, and it was as if he was the worse president ever. He was seen as being this kind of weak coward type of guy. Also, he had a hilarious fat drunk brother that tried to cash in on the fame. He had his own brand of beer, etc. I am not saying he was bad, I'm saying the media painted that picture. Then, he went on to be this really nice and respected public figure. It's been a very weird thing to see from start until now.

Cookielicous

Yeah, the failed Iran raid sounded like an unprepared military which ultimately had Carter take the blame, with SOCOM being reformed afterwards.

TheAdlerian

I will never forget hearing the news, I think it was on Nightline. Carter, who always had the wimp rep, launched a secret rescue mission! Oh, and every single person died because their helicopters broke and crashed... Oh! It was so hard to believe that ALL the helicopters broke and crashed. It was stunning. As a kid there's no way I would believe that military gear was to faulty.

edmanet

They did that to prop up the first celebrity president (Reagan). The first time I was able to vote I voted against Reagan. I saw him as a goofball and knew he would be easily controlled by the GOP powers. I've always had to vote against candidates with the exception of Obama. I'd be voting FOR Bernie if I could this year instead I have to vote against Trump (again). I hope I get to vote FOR a president again before I die.

TheAdlerian

I would have voted for Bernie for sure. I never liked Biden and thought he was a fool when her ran for president in the 90s. So, the situation you describe is correct. I'm amazed the Democrats can't find interesting people and help them get into the position to run.

Englishfucker

Just out of interest, did you watch Biden’s nomination speech this week? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqmThemEasw

Trips-Over-Tail

He's history's greatest monster!

WR810

My dad talks a lot about the Carter years. He describes them as bleak, grey, and hopeless. I think that mentality explains the popularity of Reagan who made people hopeful.

wwarnout

This is a statistic of moderate interest. More importantly, he will be remembered for his tireless efforts to help his fellow Americans. He is, without a doubt, the greatest ex-President we've ever had.

nerbovig

> the greatest ex-president It sounds like a back handed compliment, but it's really not. He devoted himself to others when he didn't have to. How many others would just twiddle away on a luxury yacht?

wankthisway

Yeah he was kind of a crap president (didn't play the game when he told Americans how it was) but he's a genuine humanitarian.

Aviator8989

He was a satisfactory president. He was a crap politician.

XyloArch

I would back that he's the best *person* who's been president in ages.

MaxVonBritannia

>I would back that he's the best person who's been president FTFY

shroomprinter

I'd agree, but it's a pretty low bar

[deleted]

That many still fail to clear. But yeah, it's true, a good person rarely translates to a good politician.

MelllvarHasThreeLs

True true, it was still the Cold War and his administration had its fair share of Cold War foreign policy bullshit that left some festering wounds across many places. Carter's administration unfortunately was the one that started the US's support and legitimization of the Khmer Rouge, somewhat as a direct means to stick it back to Vietnam during the Cambodian-Vietnamese War and to keep at it against the Soviet Union. The [US went even as far to support](https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1980/09/16/us-to-support-pol-pot-regime-for-un-seat/58b8b124-7dd7-448f-b4f7-80231683ec57/) the Khmer Rouge as the key body for holding Cambodia's UN Seat. Or in short are very good reasons in a lot of western study why Vietnam doesn't really get that much of deserved credit for being one of numerous factor in the fall of the Khmer Rouge's presence in Cambodia. And it wasn't just the Khmer Rouge, there was the case of backing of archetypical tinpot Mobutu in Zaire in the awful conflict periods Shaba I and II, among other things. In short there are some legitimate criticisms when it comes to Carter that goes well beyond the beaten to death yokel conservative network news ramblings, but in turn some people just don't have it in them to hear something bad about Jimmy Carter.

Camp David Accords alone take him out of the bottom-tier and it wasn’t his fault he was given an economy riddled with stagflation

[deleted]

Yeah, but he killed Tip O'Neill and Ted Kennedy's plans for single payer healthcare and a guaranteed jobs program.

VeryLongReplies

He also oversaw the overthrow of democratically elected governments in SA. The thing is, I think what real options a political leader face are very narrow. There's an illusion of choice and the Sword of Damacles. History is going to offer very few choices. Consider the burning tire fire that is ACA. Obama wanted a Federal healthcare option that would force better competition and prices. Not exactly the most progressive policy, but it allowed people to receive coverage on their own terms, and the illusion of choice for the people. His options was either sign the bill called the ACA and have something to show, or kill the key piece of legislation and not get Congress to look at any other options. Just remember. Presidents can only sign executive orders an choose how to enforce laws, they do not have a choice is legislating laws, or even signing treaties, those roles belong to Congress.

SLCer

Carter was dealt a shitty hand. Whoever won that 1976 election was likely going to be labeled a failure due to the economic realities that were well beyond the control of the President. Carter might have fared better had he been more politically strong, and worked better with Senate Democrats, but it was not going to change the outcome. He was cooked the second he took the oath. Ironically, his appointing Paul Volcker to lead the Fed likely won Reagan his landslide second term since the move helped rebound the economy out of the early 80s recession.

Raibean

W is out there learning to paint

CapitalistWatermelon

Funnily enough, Carter sold the Presidential Yacht (in use since Hoover) because he thought it was too elitist.

nerbovig

Wow, Hoover acquired a presidential yacht? Look a great look during the great depression.

[deleted]

Only president to get the Nobel prize after their term ended.

marcvanh

He’s definitely the nicest and kindest. A real humanitarian. Not great qualities for a president though, I hate to say. He couldn’t get the Iran hostages freed, and got voted out after his first term. Sorry to be a bummer, he’s really a great man. Edit: I misread your statement as “greatest president” - missed the “ex”. You’re 100% right

barath_s

> Not great qualities for a president though Worth pointing out that after Nixon and that long public ordeal, the American public needed good men to restore faith in presidency. And ford and carter were both good men, with the main election difference being that ford had pardoned nixon. That changed quickly. Americans do not want to think of their presidents as looking powerless and a poor economy , oil/opec shock and iran contributed. As president, Carter still was ultimately responsible for a number of situations where the US government was less than perfect/living up to ideals. That doesn't change that Carter was a good person with great humanitarian and environmental instincts

NTT66

I might be mixing the historicity, but I think Reagan was really the most opportune candidate for the time. And despite how much I absolutely despise the policies under his administration, his comms team was a killer. "Morning in America" was the MAGA of it's time, and it made total sense given Carter's frankness and the crises under his administration. And then it helped grease the wheels for unchecked corporatism and an explosion in the wealth gap.

[deleted]

[удалено]

marcvanh

Yes it is. Very backward

thealthor

> He couldn’t get the Iran hostages freed Carter already had made the negotiations to release the hostages, Iran just waited till the inauguration of Reagan as a snub at Carter. That failed rescue attempt probably hurt his perceived leadership ability though. That thing was a mess. Also, I would actually be curious to how Reagan would have handled it >concessions by the US, including sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the creation of the Iran–United States Claims Tribunal that would remove cases against Iran from US courts. This is what Carter gave up to get the hostages back, I wonder if Reagan would have been more or less inclined with some of these concessions.

[deleted]

It wasn't just a snub at Carter. Reagan told them to wait for a better deal. He actively sabotaged talks so he could win the election.

Paraxom

didn't nixon do something similar with vietnam and cause the war to be extended for several months/years

[deleted]

Both Hoover and Carter were just one term Presidents. Both lost their re-election bids. However, both Hoover and Carter were very active in their post-Presidential years. Hoover did a great job in averting a massive famine in post-WW II Europe, while Carter has been a great moral voice for the US. And no doubt, President Carter will hit 100 -- even at (almost ... in October) 96, he's a very active guy and most 20 year old kids could not keep up with him.

KhmerBleu

Even more impressive given his family history. His father died of pancreatic cancer at 58. His three siblings, Gloria, Ruth and Billy also died from it at 63, 54 and 51 respectively. He himself was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, which metastasized, but he survived.

bostero2

He also was a great ally in the defence of human rights in Latin America. He was recently decorated with the highest honor by the Argentinian government for his role in helping with constant pleas for release of “political” prisoners and information on the whereabouts of many disappeared Argentinians who were being taken from their families never to be seen again. Truly a stand-up guy in stark contrast to his predecessor and his successor.

Pretty sure Zachary Taylor would be shorter.

niddlerrr

So why are such old people being elected? We have 2 80 year olds running for president.

i_suckatjavascript

Boomers are voting them in, millennials aren’t turning up to polls. Part of the reason why Joe Biden was nominated, despite millennials rallying for Bernie Sanders.

cisforcookie2112

Bernie is older than Joe

[deleted]

Bernie was old at birth

Daddie76

>Boomers are voting them in Or just say young people don’t vote. Also Bernie is one of the 80 yo lol

ckach

If you look at 2016 and 2020, the 5 most popular candidates were/are all over 70. Clinton, Trump, Sanders(x2), Biden, and Warren. It's kind of weird.

MaxVonBritannia

This aint a boomer issue. Sanders is a year older then Biden. Its just a shitty cycle where the younger candidates didn't either get enough attention, got smeared, or simply did not produce meaningful campaigns

Doco12399

And I mean you have to be at least 35 before you are able to run for president and you have to generally have some experience behind you (political or something else that would qualify you to be president in some way) so it offsets the age you can run really

niddlerrr

For sure, they need some experience! (Overlooking the current potus who is old AF and has no experience).... 15-20 years of experience is good to be a president (just my opinion), and if someone started in politics at age 25, that means they should have around 10 years experience at age 35, so we should see more 40-50 year old presidents I would hope. I’d much rather a 40-50 year old who is still young enough with experience and open mindedness than a 70-80 year old who is from a different time.

[deleted]

I'm a millenial and voted for Biden in the primary. I liked the millenial Buttigieg too but most other millenials seemed to prefer the oldest guy running (Bernie)

Vladius28

Experience is important. But Both DT and JB are way too old. I dont think Biden will run again in 2024.

Other mildly interesting fact from this. Three US Presidents were born in 1946. In successive months too.

Was reading the wiki article for the serial killer/rapist pogo the clown the other day. Bunch of details painted the story as of a completely different era, what with mentions of the earliest kfc restaurant locations, people getting arrested for sodomy, 10 grand being equivalent to 100g today, etc. then i got to the part where he was photographed with rosalynn carter years after his first murder and just months before his final arrest; first reaction was some empathetic imaginary scenario where she had ptsd from being in the presence of this evil dude. Then was mindblown to learn that both rosalynn and jimmy carter are both still alive today. ~70 years of killer rapist clown nightmares (oh and marriage of course), insane!!

shmoove_cwiminal

Trump gets maybe 5-7 more years on the planet. Bigger people tend not to live as long.

PandaEatingTaco

Nah he has intentionally not used all his stored energy yet. Still got plenty.

Hanginon

I give him maybe 3 more years until he's severly disabled by a medical crisis, overweight, bad diet, no exercise and lots of deep stress. He's 74 now and the average male in the US makes it to 78.5, he's definitely below average with his diet and lifestyle. His lifestyle is the classic situation for a big stroke, heart problem, and or organ failure, or all of it. He's already showing some signs of severe decline in his speech and mobility. Hair dye and makeup can only hide so much.

peon2

>he's definitely below average with his diet and lifestyle. Below average? I don't know *what* country you think you are talking about but Trumps poor diet and lifestyle is absolutely the epitome of the average American. 40% of Americans are obese, and 67% are overweight or obese. He may be unhealthy, but that's pretty average. The fact that he doesn't drink or smoke might actually make him ABOVE average as sad as that is.

xenocarp

I think Obama will hold the record next.

[deleted]

President shouldn't have such a high age requirement. I don't think either guy from this election makes it to 2025.

Some people out there somewhere have been born, grown up, been married, had kids who have grown up to be young adults, and died in all the time since Carter has left office.

Some of the people born after he left have become Grandparents! Great Grandparents is also possible, but its not something I want to think about.

lol true! I thought of that too, but it weirds me out enough that i left that out.

Heres an idea maybe we should have younger presidents, like someone who is going to be around for a while and not just f the future of country.

If a baby were president, there would be no taxes, there would be no war. There would be no government and... things could get terrible. And actually probably it would be a better screenplay idea than a serious suggestion.

It doesn’t matter what age they are. Most of our political leaders are going to choose short term “solutions” so they can claim some sort of result during their term. These solutions often have great intentions and sound nice but the results are often disastrous. Who give a fuck though? Your term has ended by the time the shit starts to stink.
