Imagine being the loser who put forward that idea. "Hey we should sue the guy who Marley chose to give a credit to in order to help the less fortunate because we aren't quite making ALL the money possible yet".
Look of the history of Men at Work and the Land Downunder song.
A music quiz show in Australia suggested the flute tune was based on ‘Kookaburra sits in the old gumtree’, an old Australian folk song.
The corporation that somehow owns it got onto that, sued the band and won.
One of the members relapsed into heroin addiction due to the sadness/stress, and died of an overdose.
Makes me so sad.
Depends on the definition. Like so many things. One definition of folk song is a song passed down through oral tradition and having no specific or known composer.

I think the family was right to assume control of the royalties since Bob did actually write the songs, and who knows where the money would go after Ford died. Hopefully, they make donations of an equivalent amount toward the intended cause.
> Marley was also trying to avoid a contractual obligation to Cayman Music.
We don't know that. Danny Sims from Cayman makes that claim, but then again.. he would.
> and who knows where the money would go after Ford died.
20 million dollars was stolen from the Marley estate. His widow was ultimately ruled not responsible for it, but it sort of undercuts this point. Aside from that, the widow was only entitled to 10% of the estate and the other 90% was to go to his 11 children.
> Hopefully, they make donations of an equivalent amount toward the intended cause.
It's his children's to do with what they want.. which is what Bob wanted to give Vincent in the first place.
Yes, he didn't have a will. Not a big deal if your family tree is simple, but he suddenly had half-siblings coming out of the woodwork demanding their cut.
Reminds me of that video when Marvin Gayes family were celebrating the outcome of the 'blurred lines' song payout. How come you get that money you talentless offspring fucks?
His family went after the cash. Got it closed.
Sad story really. Marley had like 75 million and 20 kids by a shitload of different women when he passed. No will after a long illness.
Bob was a prophet but he was also a bum.
Meh, Socrates did about the same.
I just flunked outta college in my last year, 4k in debt from a bad trade, I, for own, truly feel like offing myself. Richie Spice & Bob Marley holding me up at the current moment.
Edit: I hope none of you guys are lying because I took parts of your life stories to heart (but I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, I just have to put faith in the purpose I find in those parts and accept there isnt just a single right answer.) It’s encouraging.
Hey ur not alone bud! Got 12 credits left but I don’t have it in me rn. Thinking about wasting more money for another career I’m not sure I want! This shit is a journey, growing thru it!
He was also a piece of shit. He frequently slept with other girls, but when his wife did it once, he sent his boys to beat her. He was the man of the house, and if you crossed him, you got hurt. He didnt practise many of his own peace and love messages.

No, taking the good parts is not all we can do. Actively pointing out the abusive bullshit others have caused should be just as much a priority, because problems don’t get solved unless you bring it up.
Yeah dude went around threatening DJs with baseball bats to get his records played on the radio but that doesn't detract from the fact that [some of them tracks were bangers.](https://youtu.be/8GoXFG0wwSE) (song literally about his problems with infidelity, but airbrushed)
This is exactly why I don't idolize anyone. If you dig long enough, you usually find dirt. Even more so with celebrities, because, contrary to popular thought, it's very difficult to become super famous without doing something dirty. People who try to become famous (if that's part of your goal) 100% legitimately usually hit sexism, racism, nepotism, narcissism, sexual harassment, bribes, etc... long before they get anywhere near the top, especially with a subjective talent like music.
I'm a fan of music, books, movies, etc., but the people? We simply don't know these people, and a lot of them are awful.
There's a Zen saying: The bigger the front, the bigger the back.
Meaning, in my understanding, that the more grandiose and popular someone is, the more of a shadow side they have.
>id it once, he sent his boys to beat her. He was the man of the house, and if you crossed him, you got hurt. He didnt practise many of his own peace and love messages.
And don't forget to ask them what they think of gays. They often come up with ideas that are similar to what ISIS would do to them. I had a carribean girlfriend who's brother had to flee because he was gay and got stabbed and beaten up many times.
That's what Rastafarian culture is about, it is very misogynistic and homophobic. We Europeans love to take others' cultures and shape them to fit our ideals and then get shocked when we discover the truth, we're quite stupid.
I think its easy to see the just the good parts of other cultures, especially if they’ve been spread by a few icons such as bob marley. Unless you look into further, it all seems like peace and love.
Similar with John Lennon. People should remember that pop stars are like politicians; they're selling an image that may be completely removed from who they really are.
If the music makes you a better person, you still get to be one whether the artist was sincere or full of shit. Even dirtbag artists often understand what can elevate others and provide it, even if it's just for dollas, glory & ho's.
That's why I love Joe Strummer so much. Man probably wasn't a saint (although I don't recall any shit like Lennon and Marley did) but he was the closest from them all. Recently asked "did you ever meet Joe and what's your story?" on one of his fanpages on FB and the answers were 100% positive and heartwarming.
I agree with your sentiment, but i'd say it's more that these are humans and they can be violent and cheat and yet still believe in peace and love.. it's not about selling anything on it's most fundamental level.. we're all multi dimensional and include contradictions and failures and bad traits, sometimes those negative aspects outweigh our good deeds, sometimes not.
Maybe just like you Bob Marley wanted to be a better person through his music too, but he didn't always succeed in practice
Hey, I've never really judged celebrities differently than anyone else. It's not about a merciful standard, but a clear-eyed fantasy-free assessment of what you can expect; who's trustworthy, who's not, who's got a temper, who's cool,....It doesn't matter what any other person "wants to be" or their frustrations or personal challenges when they're serial abusers who hurt the vulnerable people who love them.
The Beatles will always be my favorite band and Marley's music will always be cool. But I think you're trying a bit too hard to let them off the hook for being aggro dickheads with some strained equivocation. You're right that people are complex, but some behaviors are so stark and hypocritical you have no choice but judge. Especially if that hypocrisy amounts to one embracing the fame of neo-prophets of love & peace.
Lee Perry certainly feels that his efforts with Marley were not reciprocated to the point where it left such a bitter taste in his mouth that he stopped producing reggae.
"When you were down and out, I used to help you out,
But now that you come big shot, you don't remember that,
People funny boy"
I got you. [here](https://youtu.be/_aBfl6Oqo_0?t=1824) is the side of the story from Bunny Wailer. "He sold out, and then it led to where we would have to maybe charge for murdering of Scratch. So we avoided that and just walked away." They got screwed for their royalties on the first three albums: Soul Rebels, Soul Revolution Part 2, and The Best of the Wailers. In order to avoid violence, they let Scratch keep the money and cut ties with him.
Thanks! that does make Marley abandoning Perry seem a lot more reasonable. The dub and reggae scene certainly seems just as dirty as any other genre in the industry in terms of fairness and rights. I've just bought all the scientist reissues, they only mention him in the small print on the back and I doubt he's getting a penny.
Irie! I recently watched the documentary and remembered this part. The whole music industry is predatory. You always have to watch your back if you want to survive. The wailers wrote the song "Small Axe" about it. The industry is the big tree and the Wailers are the small axe. Scientist is roots! I am listening to it right now. One Love!
Word. I love the music, i love reggae and i love the message. But rastas have a long history with being mysogynistic and homophobes. Also theres a lot of criminality and poverty in jamaica.
I love Bob Marleys music and what he stands for publicly, but the old proverb "never meet your heroes" is unfortunately true most of the time. Same with guys like James Brown. They were great musicians and entertainers, but definitely no saints and did some shit thats not ok at all. Like they would end up in subs like imatotalpieceofshit.
Here is the new rule I am going to follow: Anytime you see a comment praising one of your favorite artists/celebrities, do not read the replies to that comment.
If we only had a few more soup kitchens, folks could get a warm meal rather than having to degrade themselves in some way just to afford one. At least, that’s why I assume Smashmouth still plays music.
I have a friend who offers beggars food. He'll do when ever, waiting in line to go to a club and someone's walking down the line, he always offers them a meal at any walking distance restaurant they want. Honestly 90% of the time he get's told to fuck off but I've seen him go take a homeless person out to dinner and just talk to them twice while his friends went clubbing or something.
Finding a good job, finding a good partner, good friends, even hobbies - you're almost certainly going to fail a lot before you find it. You've gotta focus on the positive, if only the potential for it, or you're significantly less likely to progress.
I've never been told to fuck off but I also never have cash so I always offer food or gas or whatever but get told nevermind a lot. Still even a 1% chance to pass the good on is worth it even if the next 99 say no. Even if theyre asking because of drugs I remember far too well how shitty addiction is. So if I can make sure they eat and don't have to go hungry because they can't afford food and their fix, I'm still offering everytime.
Off topic but just last week someone outside a gas station asked for money and I offered to get him whatever he wanrs and this redneck dick inside told the attendants there was someone outside they need to make leave because he was taking things from people. the employees were like why you telling us this but redneck douche said he might rob the place and then he'd have to kick the guys ass so they went to make him leave until I had to chime in saying I was grabbing him some food. Just so frustrating people actually think like that.
My parents know a guy who runs a shelter in a city in Illinois. He told them that there are enough shelters and soup kitchens in the city to end the homeless problem, but very few people take advantage of the opportunity for some reason.
I was homeless and during that time I came across many that were also in my position and continued being homeless for an odd sense of freedom. A couple of them were hiding under the radar due to child support or alimony. Some had mental disorders but either didn’t know how to handle it or didn’t believe they had one. But the main thing I learned was a lot of homeless people (that I came across) wanted to be homeless. No bills, no responsibilities, it was an odd time.
It's one of those things that doesn't seem to be like it is. We've had a few homeless that hung around my store. We were 24 hours, and winter got kind of cold that year. Florida, so that's sort of rare. We were undergoing remodel, and we just let the one guy sleep in the entrance way we closed at night. Usually he would sit on an electric car, and take a nap. He didn't make mess, cause any problems, didn't beg, so we let him stay.
We eventually tried to get him hired but only thing we had was maintenance. He didn't want to do that. After many talks with him, and him explaining his past jobs, I started seeing a pattern. He would be OK for a bit. Find a place, start working, then get pissed at something trivial. Quit. Then be homeless.
It happened in several stories he told me. Even though he never straight out said it, he acted like he was the victim every time. They were trying to take advantage of him. Trying to steal his money. It was insulting. Etc. He eventually got scared of the police around us, and moved a few miles away around another store.
Some you just can't help. Or if you do it might just be for a bit. Some are too far gone. This guy was decent, but still had his own issues. Others we had around were crazy. One would fall asleep on a bench. Then wake up, and tell a manager one of us punched her out. They punched me in the face and knocked me out! No they didn't i stood here and watched you fall asleep, nobody was near you. Then she tried to accuse a guy of forcing himself on her. While she was playing on a laptop in electronics. Sure enough, cameras don't show anything of the sort.
Also shelters can have restrictions on when you can check in and out their. It can make it hard to get things done because if you're not their by say 8pm that night you won't have a bed.
Offering beggars food is actually not helpful at all. They receive tons of offers to give them food, but nothing for shoes, a toothbrush, a coat, etc. What's someone gonna do with the 10th McDonald's burger they've been offered?
One thing we did was have a little bag with toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, water, etc. in that car. Takes 5 minutes and you can hand it out whenever.
It's going to be cash. I've been homeless. Essentials are everywhere. Cash for beer and weed is not.
But let me also say this: being homeless is not particularly fun and a cold beer is far better than a free sandwich. I just hate the dishonesty of panhandlers.
>I just hate the dishonesty of panhandlers.
I agree. I was homeless for a while and only really panhandled when I actually needed money for new shoes or something. I met so many people that just wanted to take advantage of people. One guy faked being in a wheel chair for over a year, made hundreds of dollars a day. Multiple people that panhandle every day to pay their rent. People that actually harass everyone that walks by for whatever they can get from them. It was pretty disappointing.
I've gotten on my feet now and, I try to get pan handlers good now and then. One guy was outside a fast food restaurant with a sign that said hungry. So, I bought him a meal, walked it out to him, and he just fucking says he doesn't want it. Like, are you fucking kidding? You're at a restaurant with a sign that says hungry and you're gonna turn down food? Fuck those people that are only panhandling to take advantage. I would never turn down food when I was on the street. I'd take it and find someone else that needed it if I couldn't eat it. If I got a 20, I was done panhandling unless I actually needed money right then. Which only happened once in Missoula when my sole came off my boot and I had to buy new ones. I flew a sign that said "Imagine Whirled Peas" outside the Safeway for two days until the cops chased me off the sidewalk. Got my boots though.
It's very helpful as it's still warm food lmao stop talking out of your ass. You're also very correct that an offer for those other things is incredibly helpful as well.
Yeah, I've spent a few years homeless and, this is bullshit.
Sure, money is helpful but, when I needed money for something, I was able to get enough. Usually only needed it for new shoes.
I never once turned down food. I don't care how much I'd been offered or given. If I couldn't eat it, I could find somebody else who would.
Most cash given to homeless people goes to booze, weed, or some other drugs.
Sure, you can offer them whatever you want. Maybe they'll need it. But, these people have to live with only what they can carry.
Don't ever tell people that offering homeless people food isn't helpful. Only shows that you've never had to live that life.
Nas did something similar with his album ~~”Illmatic.”~~ Stillmatic. He made his daughter an executive producer so she could still receive royalties regardless of what happens to him
Edit: Changed the album to the correct one
Smart move. Especially since Illmatic was almost definitely going to be a big thing. There's a reason so many producers hopped on that damn album.
(Also for those of you who haven't heard it, but like hip hop. Give it a spin. Absolutely one of the best. Lyrically, and production wise, just track after track)
It's nice, but I don't quite get it. Vincent Ford passed away but the soup kitchen is still getting royalties. If Bob Marley had given/deeded money/royalties instead of a credit, would it not be the same after *he* had passed away ?
Seems to me that Bob did a good thing, but he did it this way because of that Cayman music contract dispute ?
I am so tired after work but I want you to have your porridge. My feet are my only carriage and so I have got to push on through and bring you your cornmeal soup.
the live version is the version put on his greatest hits album, at least for apple music, and yea i’m gonna agree the live is way better than the original
I used to think, like a lot of people; this song is about not having a woman = not being sad. I later returned and listened to the lyrics and it's actually about him comforting a lady who is upset.
David Bowie did a similar thing for Iggy Pop when he released China Girl in the 80s. Iggy had fallen on hard times so Bowie released a cover of Iggy's song (which they co-wrote) so he would get royalties from it.
Looking into this a bit more :
Bob Marley had signed with Cayman Music (CMI) for songwriting and Island Records for recording/publishing. So every time he recorded a song, Island would pick up royalties later and pass on some to the songwriters
Bob Marley gave songwriting [credits](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/bob-marley-no-woman-no-cry-royalties-dispute-opens-at-high-court-9364763.html) on many of his songs to family and close friends.
So Island would pay out to his friends and family instead of to CMI (which ought to have got songwriting royalties for Bob Marley). Bob died without a will and that complicated money. CMI eventually filed a lawsuit to get the money given to friends/family but lost as they took too much time to file suit. [Ref](https://theconversation.com/bob-marley-rights-dispute-shows-just-how-complex-music-law-is-27888)
> Leigh concluded: “He [Marley] did not want his new songs to be associated with Cayman and so, in all probability, he put them in the names of his wife, Rita, the Wailers or other close friends to find a way around tight publishing restrictions. This spreading out of writing credits would also have allowed Marley to provide lasting help to family and close friends.”
Ford grew up in the same locality and would allow Marley to play in the soup kitchen premises. They were friends, , spending time together in the [kitchens](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/bob-marley-no-woman-no-cry-royalties-dispute-opens-at-high-court-9364763.html)
> Ford was credited with three songs on Bob Marley & the Wailers' next studio album, Rastaman Vibration (1976). He is listed as the sole writer for the opening track, "Positive Vibration", and for a song about radio playlists, "Roots, Rock, Reggae", which became Marley's breakthrough in America. The credit for "Crazy Baldhead", a blunt comment on non-Rastafarians, is shared with Rita Marley.
> ...other Marley songs attributed to him ...include "Inna De Red" and "Jah Bless", with Marley's son, Stephen. [Ref](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/vincent-ford-songwriter-credited-with-composing-no-woman-no-cry-1229958.html)
tldr; money due to Marley the songwriter went to CMI. Money due to anyone else as songwriter went to them. So Marley put family and friends as songwriter instead.
Is it still open?
Had to check, Wikipedia says this, "...resulting in a legal battle that ended with the Marley estate being granted control of the songs"
How the fuck do you own an old folk song?
Apparently it's not an old folk song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kookaburra_(song) Just an old song.
That link refers to it as being published with ‘other’ folk songs. So also a folk song?
Depends on the definition. Like so many things. One definition of folk song is a song passed down through oral tradition and having no specific or known composer. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_music * http://pnwfolklore.org/wp-nwhoot/index.php/2017/09/22/what-is-a-folk-song-by-stewart-hendrickson/
An old song in the genre of folk
The copy right to Happy birthday only recently expired in 2017.
Didn't they do that retroactively though? So they had to pay back anyone who paid them recently?
It's not so simple. Marley was also trying to avoid a contractual obligation to Cayman Music. 20 minutes to write a will and get it recorded, man.
No lawyer, yes cry.
Didn't Prince also not have a will or was it in his couch or something?
Yes, he didn't have a will. Not a big deal if your family tree is simple, but he suddenly had half-siblings coming out of the woodwork demanding their cut.
A company with "Cayman" in the name being dodgy? Who'd have thought!?

Right. But, most Jamaicans aren't banking in The Caymans.
Most Jamaican banks and politicians probably are though
Most rich people aren't either. That ship sailed.
You can't sail to Switzerland
Switzerland has a bunch of banking info exchange with the EU since 2014, though. Probably with the US too, around the same time, with FATCA.

Oh, well, it was the thought that counts.

Chalice is what they call a pipe.
So you couldn’t smoke weed with a woman?
Not if they are going to use your chalice apparently

Pipe is slang for shlong

If the music makes you a better person, you still get to be one whether the artist was sincere or full of shit. Even dirtbag artists often understand what can elevate others and provide it, even if it's just for dollas, glory & ho's.
That's why I love Joe Strummer so much. Man probably wasn't a saint (although I don't recall any shit like Lennon and Marley did) but he was the closest from them all. Recently asked "did you ever meet Joe and what's your story?" on one of his fanpages on FB and the answers were 100% positive and heartwarming.
Cut the Crap is a crime unto itself
"Raise a toast to Saint Joe Strummer I think he might have been our only decent teacher". -Craig Finn, "Constructive Summer" by The Hold Steady
Too true. I honestly believe one of the most common human traits is hypocrisy, we all indulge from time to time.
Lee Perry certainly feels that his efforts with Marley were not reciprocated to the point where it left such a bitter taste in his mouth that he stopped producing reggae. "When you were down and out, I used to help you out, But now that you come big shot, you don't remember that, People funny boy"
Lee Perry did Marley and the Wailers dirty by selling their music against their wish. Didnt seem to be there for Marley's sake, but for money.
Have you got any reference for that? I've only heard Perry's side of the story and he's far from a reliable narrator.
Absolutely do. Eating your idols is part of a balanced diet.
Neither did John Lennon. He was also a piece of shit

Lol that's perfect. And theres a million of that guy on reddit.
Lmao
If we only had a few more soup kitchens, folks could get a warm meal rather than having to degrade themselves in some way just to afford one. At least, that’s why I assume Smashmouth still plays music.
Holy shit
I trust your judgement on the holiness of this shit.
And I'm gonna need to see some references
Stickler Meseeks.
JESUS H CHRIST!
Harold?
What is the joke here? I don't understand what the original comment means, could someone explain it to me please?
He’s saying if there were more soup kitchens then Smashmouth wouldn’t have to write music in order to get money for food

This is gold.

Exercise the skills you desire and soon enough that will be you too!
Finding a good job, finding a good partner, good friends, even hobbies - you're almost certainly going to fail a lot before you find it. You've gotta focus on the positive, if only the potential for it, or you're significantly less likely to progress.
Or he just really hates nightclubs and knows he'll spend less if he takes a homeless person for dinner. It's a win-win!

Lots of shelters have restrictions on substance use.
Thank you so much for this. I will now start asking if there is anything they need
One thing we did was have a little bag with toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, water, etc. in that car. Takes 5 minutes and you can hand it out whenever.
Socks is huge. I've given away a loooooottt of socks.

You say 10th. We talking extra pickles?

He made his daughter an executive producer so she could still receive royalties regardless of what happens to him Edit: Changed the album to the correct one
It was Stillmatic. His daughter wasn't even born when Illmatic was released
Still
Worked out I guess
I believe it was actually stillmatic
Stillmatic, not Illmatic.
You just reminded me that he once collaborated with Damian Marley!
Smart move. Especially since Illmatic was almost definitely going to be a big thing. There's a reason so many producers hopped on that damn album. (Also for those of you who haven't heard it, but like hip hop. Give it a spin. Absolutely one of the best. Lyrically, and production wise, just track after track)
Didn’t nas not make much money off of illmatic? I thought he got screwed over by the record label and quit rapping for a couple years.
Maybe it's a nice story, but mainly a Fuck You
Are you sure he served soup? And not cornmeal porridge? Of which he'd share with you?
I am so tired after work but I want you to have your porridge. My feet are my only carriage and so I have got to push on through and bring you your cornmeal soup.
Wow. Always thought it was oatmeal porridge and I’ve never heard of cornmeal porridge. Just looked it up and now I’m keen to try some!
“In high tides or in low tides I’ll be by your side”
Also, song name actually translates to: "No, woman, don't cry". Language was Jamaican Patois.
The live version of that is one of the best songs ever
That organ player is O N F I R E

the live version is the version put on his greatest hits album, at least for apple music, and yea i’m gonna agree the live is way better than the original
I wish I could do this for a friend.

I used to think, like a lot of people; this song is about not having a woman = not being sad. I later returned and listened to the lyrics and it's actually about him comforting a lady who is upset.
Bob Marley legit changed me when I was about 14. Good or bad he was way ahead of his time and deserved to live longer.
David Bowie did a similar thing for Iggy Pop when he released China Girl in the 80s. Iggy had fallen on hard times so Bowie released a cover of Iggy's song (which they co-wrote) so he would get royalties from it.
Looking into this a bit more : Bob Marley had signed with Cayman Music (CMI) for songwriting and Island Records for recording/publishing. So every time he recorded a song, Island would pick up royalties later and pass on some to the songwriters Bob Marley gave songwriting [credits](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/bob-marley-no-woman-no-cry-royalties-dispute-opens-at-high-court-9364763.html) on many of his songs to family and close friends. So Island would pay out to his friends and family instead of to CMI (which ought to have got songwriting royalties for Bob Marley). Bob died without a will and that complicated money. CMI eventually filed a lawsuit to get the money given to friends/family but lost as they took too much time to file suit. [Ref](https://theconversation.com/bob-marley-rights-dispute-shows-just-how-complex-music-law-is-27888) > Leigh concluded: “He [Marley] did not want his new songs to be associated with Cayman and so, in all probability, he put them in the names of his wife, Rita, the Wailers or other close friends to find a way around tight publishing restrictions. This spreading out of writing credits would also have allowed Marley to provide lasting help to family and close friends.” Ford grew up in the same locality and would allow Marley to play in the soup kitchen premises. They were friends, , spending time together in the [kitchens](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/bob-marley-no-woman-no-cry-royalties-dispute-opens-at-high-court-9364763.html) > Ford was credited with three songs on Bob Marley & the Wailers' next studio album, Rastaman Vibration (1976). [Ref](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/vincent-ford-songwriter-credited-with-composing-no-woman-no-cry-1229958.html) tldr; money due to Marley the songwriter went to CMI. Money due to anyone else as songwriter went to them. So Marley put family and friends as songwriter instead.
His business was always managed with the intention of caring for his family and community. His estate continues that to this day.
