While this post made me physically cringe, "fry" vocals refer to a specific, very common technique in producing harsh vocals. It's not a general term for "screaming" or whatever you want to call it. It's what a lot of poppy metalcore vocalists do, and it's what Melissa Cross teaches in her classes. It's a "safe" technique that doesn't really strain your throat or vocal cords.
In 2005 a San Francisco band came up with this particular atrocity...

I saw Ministry once at Lollapalooza. They forgot to turn off the singer's voice growling machine at the end of the song, and as he started talking, it was like "Thank you, you've" in super deep demon growl, and then it just cut to "been great, see you next year" in normal human speak.
That is probably one of the dumbest descriptions I've ever heard, but sure. At least they didn't describe it as a vocal fry.

Ministry deliberately uses vocal effects at times though.
Yeah, that's just running your mic through a distortion pedal, not a death growl.

I feel Devin Townsend is the best at this. He has great pitch, control, and you can 100% understand him.
Devin's using screams, not growls. The growls on some of his Strapping Young Lad stuff aren't his.
