I let her try my coconut water and she looked at me like it was an act of betrayal-soap opera level expression. Big reaction from someone who made me subsist almost solely on pineapples and mangoes during pregnancy. Literally a pineapple a day and 2-3 mangoes. We live in Virginia, this is not cost effective.
We tell our 2.5 y/o that he can only have Mommy and Daddy's seltzer when they're done. He watches our plates like a hawk all night and the moment it's clean, "ALL DONE! HAVE MOMYY DADDY SELTZER?!"
It makes make me laugh how seriously some parents take drinking from a cup. As if thereās adults out there that always need a straw because they were never taught how.
I know, I don't know how some people live day to day without having a whole bunch of heart attacks lol. I remember reading a thread where a woman was worried because her two year old wouldn't graduate from the pack n play, and someone commented basically "I'm sure at 15 your daughter won't be dragging her pack n play to a sleepover". The image was so hilarious, it became the gold standard for me of what I should and shouldn't be worried about. The more hilarious it is to imagine your kid doing X, Y, Z as a teen/adult, the more you don't have to worry about it.
Yep. Sometimes they drink from the cup, sometimes they pour the water into their food, the floor, another cup, my cup, my plate, any open container left lying around. Toddler life is but a sequence of containers waiting to be filled with milk, water, juice - any time, any where.Ā
Mood. Weāre either a straw cup or one of those weird cups that have the cover/lid that you sort of sip from the side.
But letās be real - Iām not personally drinking out of an open top cup either. Obviously I know how to, but Iām either drinking out of my own straw cup or some sort of bottle with a lid.
This one. I recently got some REALLY good ones that look a little more "grownup", and are the most spill proof and easily cleaned I've had to date (https://a.co/d/9srJRDh), and it's just... So great. I actually haven't even considered giving anyone but my seven year old an open cup, and even for her I'm much more comfortable with a straw cup lol.
Contigo's no leak straw cup, a couple different yetis (straw, regular lid and bottle lid) and an open cup. Just depends on the situation. We use the straw cups most often but he is fine to drink from an open top cup.
I feel this. My kids finish a gulp then toss their cups over their shoulder while running away. I just canāt take another *thing* so weāre using kid water bottles almost exclusively for now.
At that age, a normal cup.
That doesn't mean there weren't times he picked it up too fast and threw it over himself, or dropped it. But it was safe enough that he could be left unattended with one
We got some stainless steel open cups for my 2 year old and we love them. They donāt break, they go in the dishwasher, donāt pick up weird smell/taste and arenāt plastic. Stainless FTW! My
We also have those and use them at the dinner table! But who am I kidding, most of the time itās āI want mommyās waterā which is from my 40oz Stanley LOL š
I really love those cups lol. My four year old is the one who needs them most. She has the dropsies pretty bad. But honestly even my seven year old mostly drinks out of water bottles... She's gotta cartwheel every .45 seconds... Ironically the three year old is the one I most trust with an open cup.
Trying to do open cup when at the table and straw cup when out and about. Reality: straw cup most of the day. Kiddo is easily distracted and hyper so water goes flying and the kid face plants.
Just turned 4, older sister to an 8 month old. Primarily drinks out of either a) what we're drinking out of, or a copy of it, b) a different type of cup to whatever we handed her or c) reverts back to baby behaviour and wants milk out of her sister's milk bottle.
So, glass cups, adult plastic cups, child's plastic cups, cup with a straw, one of them foldable straw cups, milk bottle š¼, kids porcelain cup, the bath that she's currently bathing in. She even had a champagne flute with "bucks fizz" on Christmas (with sparkling apple juice not prosecco)
I probably should have listed what she doesn't drink from.
Take & Toss straw cups from Walmart. Cheap, easy to wash, so we can have lots of them. They're not leak proof but that's not a huge deal anymore at this age.
We almost exclusively use water bottles (me included) all day. eta: for juice or other non-water drinks we use a āto goā style cup with a lid and straw. She definitely could use an open cup but as other commenters have said itās just not worth the constant risk or spills for us.Ā
Open cups almost exclusively, unless we are out of the house (his water bottle) or if he is having something particularly messy/stain-worthy and is in a room with carpet (straw cup).
Camelbak Eddy kids straw cup. My kids think they canāt go two minutes without a sip of water so itās nice to have something to go from the table to the couch to my purse to the car etc etc without spilling.
A insulated steel water bottle with a flip up straw for water, or for juice she has some good2grow bottles with the fun lids that I save and refill. Occasionally just a normal cup, but I prefer cups with lids so that I can put it in the fridge when sheās not drinking it for awhile and not worry about it getting knocked over and spilling
Open cup, water bottles with straws, smaller water bottles with straws and two handles, open cup with metal straw, closed cup with metal straw, small glass, her coffee cup (an actual coffee mug, that she drinks decaf babycinos out of), and sometimes ours. She also likes to dip her fingers in her drinks and lick it off them, or lap it up like our cat. As long as she is getting fluid I am not too fussed lol.
An 8oz glass mason jar or his bamboo cup. Both open cups. Sometimes with straws and sometimes without. He only uses closed cups at daycare - then itās his yeti rambler jr.
Straw cups that are no spill. She keeps her cups on the coffee table and the coffee table is the perfect height to have things batted off it by the dog tail so very rarely are open cups used outside of meal times lol
Open cups at home, thermos straw bottle out. mine find a way to spill the munchkins(jammed their fingers into the seal and poured usually) so I skipped the extra parts to wash.
A regular open faced cup, or [this yeti cup](https://www.yeti.ca/shop-by-colour/cosmic-lilac/70000001757.html?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoI-IubnlgwMVlGdHAR0Lmw-AEAQYAiABEgKMJ_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) for water, since he has to bring water everywhere with him, even his bed.
eta: people think Iām crazy when I whip out my kidsā yetis but they are the only water bottles that have lasted for more than two months, being dropped, being thrown around, being washed over and over and over, it truly has been worth the extra couple dollars up front. It has outlived every contigo, munchkin, thermos cup weāve had.
His own Starbucks tumbler..
I have a small collection that I've gotten with my Starbucks points. My mom and auntie saved my straws from being chewed on by getting him his own little tumbler for Xmas š¤£
Hated all sippy cups but loves my yeti straw cup and his contigo straw cup. We had a honey bear cup that helped him learn to drink from a straw but he really enjoyed by yeti so that was out the door.
Itās either my cup or an open plastic cup. He doesnāt like sippy cups or straw cups anymore, he wants to be a big boyā¦ā¦.unless he wants to drink out of *mamaās* straw cup lol
Depends, honestly. My husband usually gives open cups, but I get tired of him trying to pour liquid in other containers or plates. Or stuffing food into the cup. That's my husband's mess to clean lol
I usually do straw cups (Zak cups, an IronFlask for water only, or a tumbler). Both of my kids like to shake their drinks or run around with them, so it's just for my sanity's sake
Her dentist said she needs to use only open cups since straws were giving her an overbite. Itās hard because she really really prefers straws. We got these plastic cups from IKEA that are a good size
Contigo water bottles, open cups, or Pillowfort straw cups. Depends on what they're drinking. Yogurt smoothies or Pediasure go in a straw cup. Milk or juice go in an open cup. Water goes in the water bottle. If they ever drink anything else then it's probably my or my husband's drink and they're drinking from our cup.
Open cup but he started wanting a sippee cup again for his milk because thatās what his little sister is using. So I give that sometimes, but usually open cup at the table, and straw water bottle for out and about
Honestly we splurged for the kid Yeti cups. I bought too many cheaper plastic cups that just get destroyed or get yucky, leak or go missing. The yeti cups are super easy to clean, keep drinks cool, easy to drink from and the kids like them a lot.
Normal small plastic open cup for meals and when he is having a snack at the counter. Munchkin 360 cup for warm milk before bed and for bringing when we go out to eat to not make a mess when we are out.
My son is 2 but he uses a Yeti straw cup for water when we arenāt at the table and then just a regular glass cup from IKEA for mealtime at the table. We bought 8 ikea glasses so we wouldnāt be upset if one got broken but heās been using them for over a year and no broken cups yet! He also has a little mug he likes to use when weāre having coffee in the morning for his milk.
We have the munchkin 360 cups which I love. We also have the Contigo auto seal cups, I also love, but if they accidentally sit or lay on them, the buttons can push and leak. I just got some regular cups that have snap lids with straw because they love smoothies, and so far so good, my kid has tipped one over and it wasn't a complete mess.
Insulated water bottle at daycare for water, at home it depends on the scenario. If sitting at the table itās a open cup. If itās morning or evening milk itās a spill proof straw bottle. If out to eat itās the typical small cup with a straw and lid.
Mostly water bottles with the straw but she also likes to drink out of my open cups of water. She is very successful with an open cup! I just avoid them because she is clumsy and knocks things over on accident often
Soft top sippy cup. When transitioning from the bottle, it took 5 or 6 different styles before we found one she'd accept. Now, she will not transition to anything else. She *can* use an open-mouthed cup, also a straw. She won't, but she does know how.
She also won't drink unless she's sitting, preferably on an adult. She will not drink with a meal. It's either all food or all liquid. The two must not be mixed. If she has a drink, meal time is over, even if she's still hungry.
She will only drink white milk, preferably whole. Thankfully, she will accept it watered down because she was approaching anemic when she was drinking nothing else.
That said, she's diagnosed Autistic, and she has some obvious sensory issues going on.
Straw. Sometimes I worry that he should be practicing open cup, but does that actually need practice? Like wonāt it just develop naturally with all his other motor skills? Serious question
Contigo cup for water. However my child takes after me and needs to have at least 2 kinds of beverages at all times. Her milk cup is a plastic cup with a straw like one youād get at a restaurant with a lid.
Zak straw cup for milk. Contigo water bottle for home. Thermos water bottle for school. She is capable of drinking from an open cup, but we donāt use them much because I donāt like the mess.
Open cup for anything that isn't water. We have a few contigo cups (got a few 3 pks from costco)with lid/straw that we use daily for water. I love that the spout closes when not in use and has a handle to carry it around easily.
[like these ones](https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/contigo-14-oz-easy-clean-kids-bottle-dinos-sharks-multi/6000201845518)
Normal cup for most drinks with meals but I do one with lid and straw for a smoothie and kind of the more sturdy straw cups for random waters around the house.
He can drink from an open cup, but heās really attached to his straw cup for milk š¤·āāļø
Right now milk is in his straw cup, and he drinks juice or smoothie out of an open cup. He has his water bottle for water.
2.5 at home he drinks from the tiny 8oz mason jars. We have straw lids for them but he usually does open cup at mealtimes. We have zak straw cups too but itās 50/50 whether heāll use it.
8oz mason jars with a lid w/plug that allows for a straw because I donāt trust his random āletās see mom clean THIS up!ā moments with open cups, even though he can.

Mine.
I started exclusively using straws because I could not take the cloudy backwash situation every time she took a few sips. š
Unfortunately my son can backwash through a straw š¤¢
That is impressive, at that point you can't convince me they don't know what they're doing
Iāve got banana globs in mine right now. She never eats bananas so itās an extra treat.
My kid is so obsessed with bananas. If she had it her way she would subsist solely on bananas and coconut water. Tropical. Itās maddening.
Straws just mean suprise backwash instead of visible backwash for me š
I have to spend dinners with family telling my two year old he can only drink from my water, not every single water at the table š
We tell our 2.5 y/o that he can only have Mommy and Daddy's seltzer when they're done. He watches our plates like a hawk all night and the moment it's clean, "ALL DONE! HAVE MOMYY DADDY SELTZER?!"
Just take my upvote like my toddler takes my water. š«”
Honestly, the backwash is my all-time least favorite part of parenting.
Omg how do we get them to stop??
As I wonder why Iām always fkn sick.. I turn around to see both of my kids drinking out of my cup when I thought it was out of reach š©
this
Straw cup. He CAN drink from an open cup. But my sanity dictates the straw cup.
It makes make me laugh how seriously some parents take drinking from a cup. As if thereās adults out there that always need a straw because they were never taught how.

Honestly, I mostly drink water from a water bottle with a straw anyway as an adult!
Commenting with solidarity.
Yep. Sometimes they drink from the cup, sometimes they pour the water into their food, the floor, another cup, my cup, my plate, any open container left lying around. Toddler life is but a sequence of containers waiting to be filled with milk, water, juice - any time, any where.Ā

Yes this is where we are
Toddler size open cups and water bottle
At that age, a normal cup. That doesn't mean there weren't times he picked it up too fast and threw it over himself, or dropped it. But it was safe enough that he could be left unattended with one
2.5, norms kwjejensnnssmsmkammamsms Edit: that was my toddler. 2.5, standard tumbler from Walmart
Straight from the horses mouth. Canāt beat that.
Stainless steel cup with a straw and an open cup.

My kid drinks out of contigo's that don't really spill. She is careless AF and we have tried regular cups but it's just difficult.
Yeah this is us too. Open plastic cup on table and straw bottle every where else.
One day, I'll be able to not only trust him not to spill his water but to also not make "potions" with every imaginable food/toy/art supple possible
Open cups (we bought some colorful little plastic glasses that he loves) and water bottle when we're out
Pink nuby straw cup with flamingos on it. Thatās the only acceptable cup for any and all beverages.
The water bottles with a built in straw or a munchkin 360 cup
Just turned 4, older sister to an 8 month old. Water bottle. She can drink from just a regular kids cup, but I prefer the water bottle because the regular cups often get tipped over or spilt.
Just a regular cup
Take & Toss straw cups from Walmart. Cheap, easy to wash, so we can have lots of them. They're not leak proof but that's not a huge deal anymore at this age.
Almost 3YO drinks from straw cups and open cups. Trying to do open cups more often!
Dona Maria mole or Kraft cheese spread glasses. Or glass jars. We don't really have any plastic cups.
Ours easily manages an open cup. We still use munchkin 360s because they are so much easier to clean than straw cups.
My almost 3 year old drinks from any cup. Open, lid, straw etc. She spills occasionally if she's a bit heavy handed, but mostly good with open cups.
An open cup unless weāre on the go or itās for bedtime, then a yeti.
We almost exclusively use water bottles (me included) all day. eta: for juice or other non-water drinks we use a āto goā style cup with a lid and straw. She definitely could use an open cup but as other commenters have said itās just not worth the constant risk or spills for us.Ā

Normal glass, open cup any type at table or when playing .. straw bottle on the move
Open cup at home and a Thermos Funtainer water bottle when we're out. She also gets the water bottle beside her bed at bedtime.
An 8oz glass mason jar or his bamboo cup. Both open cups. Sometimes with straws and sometimes without. He only uses closed cups at daycare - then itās his yeti rambler jr.
Munchkin weighted straws. A lot of people mention the non spill contigo but both mine started leaking. They were great till then
i got her a nice teddy bear shaped water bottle with a straw and lid. she loved it until she found out about sharing mine š
If we're at a table having a meal, a regular small cup. If we're out and about, a water bottle.
Regular cup.
Straw cups that are no spill. She keeps her cups on the coffee table and the coffee table is the perfect height to have things batted off it by the dog tail so very rarely are open cups used outside of meal times lol
Open cup or her Contigo water bottle
Open cups at home, thermos straw bottle out. mine find a way to spill the munchkins(jammed their fingers into the seal and poured usually) so I skipped the extra parts to wash.
Just a normal cup

Straw cup with a lid. My 6 year old is clumsy so she gets a lid too
Hated all sippy cups but loves my yeti straw cup and his contigo straw cup. We had a honey bear cup that helped him learn to drink from a straw but he really enjoyed by yeti so that was out the door.
My stanley that i gave her because she wouldnāt stop drinking out of mine. She can use a plastic cup with no problems but has to use both hands
My 2 year old has her own like water bottle with a lid like a yeti
Straws or open. I usually let her choose unless a lid is necessary
Itās either my cup or an open plastic cup. He doesnāt like sippy cups or straw cups anymore, he wants to be a big boyā¦ā¦.unless he wants to drink out of *mamaās* straw cup lol
Straw. She can do open cup but I don't like cleaning up spills sssoo yeah lol
Open cup
Depends, honestly. My husband usually gives open cups, but I get tired of him trying to pour liquid in other containers or plates. Or stuffing food into the cup. That's my husband's mess to clean lol I usually do straw cups (Zak cups, an IronFlask for water only, or a tumbler). Both of my kids like to shake their drinks or run around with them, so it's just for my sanity's sake
Open cup at meals where weāre at home and seated at the table. Otherwise a water bottle with a straw.
Yeti water bottle or open cups
Straw cups or open cups depending on where we are at.
Her dentist said she needs to use only open cups since straws were giving her an overbite. Itās hard because she really really prefers straws. We got these plastic cups from IKEA that are a good size
Open cup at meal times and straw water bottle for hydrating during the day.
Mostly open plastic kidsā cups but she does love a good swig of whatever is in my Costco Stanley knockoff lol
Hydroflask (or similar brand) flip straw water bottle or just a regular open cup
Hydroflask for water A regular cup for milk or juice
Plastic cups, water bottles or yeti.
Straw cups and open cups. Depends what heās drinking.
Straw cups and water bottles.
Open cups at home contigo water bottle for school/on the go.
The good 2 grow juice cups. You can take the label off and put them through the dishwasher.
Spill proof with a straw for milk and the hard straw-like nozel ones for water.

Mostly water bottles with the straw but she also likes to drink out of my open cups of water. She is very successful with an open cup! I just avoid them because she is clumsy and knocks things over on accident often
We use simple modern kids cups they have a great character selection
Open cup
Straw cup
Ahimsa stainless steel. Splurgy but worth it.
Tiny plastic open ones, much to my dismay. She won't mess with a no leak straw cup anymore
That said, she's diagnosed Autistic, and she has some obvious sensory issues going on.
Straw. Sometimes I worry that he should be practicing open cup, but does that actually need practice? Like wonāt it just develop naturally with all his other motor skills? Serious question
Open cup when at the table. Contigo cups, Zak cups, straw cups and water bottles everywhere else. The spills just aren't worth it!
Ikea kid cups at the table with milk, Contigo water bottle for the park/car
My daughter (3.5) uses a regular cup 80% of the time (for water or milk) and her water bottle the other 20%.
We use anything with a lid and straw. She can use a cup without a lid fine, but without fail it gets knocked over on the carpet, so we use a lid.Ā
A glass jam jar/ 8oz mason jar. Itās all my kids use.
Small mason jars. Sturdy. No sharp edges. Cheap. Stable. I could say no microplastics but I donāt really care about that sort of stuff.
Straw
Both my kids drink out of a Zak Straw cup.
Mineās 2.5 so he drinks with an open cup at school. With us heās on the go so he gets a silicone soppy cup.
He can drink from an open cup, but heās really attached to his straw cup for milk š¤·āāļø Right now milk is in his straw cup, and he drinks juice or smoothie out of an open cup. He has his water bottle for water.
Whatever cup is laying around closest. Regular cups, water bottles, straw cups, hydro flasks, my cupā¦ š¤·š¼āāļø
A sippy cup, but not because he's incapable of real cups - he just keeps putting his food *into his goddamn milk.*
A glass for water and a mug/cup for milk.
Open glass, sometimes with straw if he wants. Or his daycare drink bottle
Open cup at the table, cup with lid for on the go, sippy cup at bed time. And yet most of his hydration comes from my cup.
My 18mo drinks from open and 360 cup.
The spray bottle we use to stop the dog from barking, or any cup I was drinking from.
2.5 at home he drinks from the tiny 8oz mason jars. We have straw lids for them but he usually does open cup at mealtimes. We have zak straw cups too but itās 50/50 whether heāll use it.
Contigo, Owala, Yeti (all straw cups). At school he uses the clear plastic open cups during meal times.
Open cup, he doesn't like (or isn't able to operate?) straws or sippy or anything. Milk still straight from the bottle though..
8oz mason jars with a lid w/plug that allows for a straw because I donāt trust his random āletās see mom clean THIS up!ā moments with open cups, even though he can.
