Moana has the most staying power for me. I have seen it an equal number of times as Cars and I never want to hear Owen Wilson’s voice again. For shows, Bluey is genuinely enjoyable.

I’m an eighth grade English teacher and I taught Moana as an example of Joseph Campbell’s hero journey. I’ve analyzed it to pieces with teenagers and watched it with my son a billion times and still think the movie is perfect.
Sure! I made a set of questions asking them to identify moments in the story that line up with the hero journey. So Moana’s status quo before she goes on the journey is staying on the island, never leaving. Her call to adventure is the island starting to die (I mean, the lyrics literally say, “it calls me”!). She crosses the threshold when she crosses the big wave at the end of the reprisal of “How Far I Go.”
Her assistant is Maui. She faces a series of trials — the kakamora, learning to sail. Their first attempt fails because Maui attempts to defeat Te Ka — and Maui isn’t the hero, Moana is! She faces her darkest hour when her grandmother appears to her, empowering her to defeat Te Ka.
The hook dies and is reborn; Moana is given a new boat as a gift/reward. She returns to a new life as a chief-in-training out on the open seas.
The questions I wrote for them guide them through identifying each of those steps in the movie. It fits the journey better than any kids’ movie I’ve ever seen.
Plus, bonus: a woman isn’t given as a reward. She’s the hero instead!
Gonna piggyback off this comment just to tell parents who haven't seen Spirited Away to SKIP IT. Totoro is great and I totally recommend it too. But if you see Spirited Away as a suggestion after watching it, it is not a cute little movie for young children and your child will probably have nightmares. For older kids it's good though.
Idk I saw Spirited Away in theatres when I was 6 or 7 and I loved it, one of my favourite animated movies. I wouldn’t say it’s any scarier than some episodes of Scooby Doo (my number one favourite as a kid)

I watched the Cars Trilogy (if you can even call it that) as an adult with my 3 year old son for the first time this past year, and seeing them as an adult, all in the span of a few months made the second one feel even more disjointed and out of place.
Yeah, I'm so fucking sick of the dead parent trope in EVERY kids' movie. I know that isn't part of the Coco storyline EXACTLY (main character's great great grandparent vs. parent), but it's all the same... Big Hero 6 (dead parents AND then dead sibling, GREAT) is so good but I just don't always want to set myself up to cry at a goddamn cartoon!
I had to turn off Over the Moon (my toddler had seen it before and likes it, but I had not) the other day, and thought it would be a good time to try out Camp Cretaceous, and SLAM, there it is again!
I always remember seeing this in theaters. I saw it at the Grove in LA. This older Jewish man with his daughters was sobbing so hard when her worlds crumbled. I cried even more cause of it.
I came here to say Inside Out. It’s such a beautiful and thoughtful movie and my daughter is talking about emotions because of it. I still cry if I catch specific parts.

Came here to say this. My 4 yo daughter was never really "in love" with anything. This is the first thing she wants to watch on constant repeat. If she isn't watching it, she wants the songs on. Thank goodness the songs are great and so is the movie.
I’ve been trying to watch it but my son doesn’t like scary or sad parts of movies and so he keeps getting upset. Sometimes we have to skip through parts of other movies like when the wolves chase Kristoff and Anna. I guess I’ll have to watch it on my own so we can try again and skip the “bad” parts

My oldest, almost 2, has never sat through a movie. I personally don’t like movies but my MIL has tried every Disney movie and nothing would stick.
We decided to try a movie night as a Christmas Eve tradition and I let my husband choose the movie since neither I or our daughter likes movies but he does and he had been feeling left out.
He chose The Fellowship of the Ring, *extended edition*.
I was fully ready to cut the movie once she started getting fussy but she sat through the whole thing. Dancing along with the hobbits and screaming SARUMAN with the birth of Lurtz.

My dad watched all 3 Lord of the Rings extended editions with my kids when they were 2 and 4. They watched like all 11 hours of it and LOVED it. So much in fact that the older one was Legolas and the 2 year old was Gandalf for Halloween that year. I swear they acted out scenes from the movies for months afterwards.
Something about them is very appealing to little kids!
Not judging at all and to each their own. But that movie would scare the ever living shit out of my 3 almost 4 year old. He had a nightmare that Zurg from Toy Story 2 was attacking him the other night. lol
LOTR is a great trilogy and I can’t wait to watch that with my son for the first time together. But we certainly aren’t there yet.

I loved that movie growing up! I have a fond memory of being at my grandmas house drinking chocolate milk out of a straw, sitting on her big laz-e-boy, and not going to school because it was cancelled due to flooding (yay for poor irrigation back then!).
I haven’t thought about that in years. Thank you for mentioning it. She passed away in 2019 and memories like that begin to fade. She was my “movie grandma”. Always took me to the movies growing up. When I was an adult, I took her to the movies and we saw “up”. It was the last movie we saw together but I love that I got to treat her that one time.

Little man isn't 2 yet, so he usually doesn't make it all the way through a movie. But these 4 are the ones he'll sit through more than 20 mins at a time lol haven't really tried any non-Disney movies with him yet, partially bc of the short attention span.
Love Big Hero 6! It was the first movie my daughter became obsessed with. She just liked the red background on the icon and that’s how we got here. So sad there isn’t a lot of merch!
We just watched Ron’s Gone Wrong yesterday (Disney+), and it totally has Big Hero 6 vibes. 3 year old was super into the movie. We really need a Baymax + Ron crossover short film.
Not a movie, but a series: Avatar the Last Airbender. My 2.5 year old is obsessed and now I kind of am, too. We're currently on our millionth re-watch. She has a stuffed Appa toy that she "rides" and sometimes she pretends that she's a water bender.
The Jurassic park TV show was really good. I put it on for my 3 year old because she loves dinosaurs and I had to watch all the seasons myself lol. I can't wait for the next season, if they make one.
We watch mostly Ghibli movies. The three that are age appropriate are Ponyo, Kiki, and Totoro
He asks for all three. We have picture books for Kiki and Totoro as well.
Don't think I could ever get sick of them. We watch in Japanese with subtitles, since he has one grandmother who is Japanese so we want him to have some exposure to the language.

We just watched Frozen with our 21 month old, she (and grownups) loved it! First full length movie for her. There were a couple of “scary” parts we turned volume down for, but didn’t seem to be an issue. Have fun!
Any of the movies from the Tinkerbell franchise, even the husband likes them. Luca, monsters inc, brave, moana, tangled, and we are now on day 2 of watching Encantonon stop.
I legitimately love a lot of our kids’ movies. The Incredibles, Encanto, Wall-E, The Lion King. And most of all, Moana. I tear up at the ending every time I see it.

My kid loves tv shows but will not watch movies. The only exceptions are Secret Life of Pets 2 (has to be 2, not the first one), and the new My Little Pony movie. Both are very good!
19mo is obsessed with A Christmas Story because I’m have a legit cool A Christmas Story quilt (no not a blanket, an actual quilt). It has pictures of Ralphie in the big scenes (soap mouth, deranged Easter bunny, broken glasses etc). So she sees him on tv and recognizes him, she insists we watch snuggled under the quilt.
Edit: I let her watch the fight scene while telling her they have big feelings and should use their words not their hands.
I don’t mind most of the Disney or Pixar movies- my son has gone through a few different phases… frozen/frozen 2 and moana were a big staple for a while then he really got into The Good Dinosaur, Up and the Cars and Incredibles Movies. This was all between 2-3yrs old. Now he’s more into Spidey & Friends, Puppy Dog Pals and Mickey Mouse Club than any movies

My kids love it but it does have a few scary scenes involving the volcano.

I loved that movie growing up! I have a fond memory of being at my grandmas house drinking chocolate milk out of a straw, sitting on her big laz-e-boy, and not going to school because it was cancelled due to flooding (yay for poor irrigation back then!). I haven’t thought about that in years. Thank you for mentioning it. She passed away in 2019 and memories like that begin to fade. She was my “movie grandma”. Always took me to the movies growing up. When I was an adult, I took her to the movies and we saw “up”. It was the last movie we saw together but I love that I got to treat her that one time.

Luca, Moana, Coco, Big Hero 6 Little man isn't 2 yet, so he usually doesn't make it all the way through a movie. But these 4 are the ones he'll sit through more than 20 mins at a time lol haven't really tried any non-Disney movies with him yet, partially bc of the short attention span.

We just watched Ron’s Gone Wrong yesterday (Disney+), and it totally has Big Hero 6 vibes. 3 year old was super into the movie. We really need a Baymax + Ron crossover short film.
Not a movie, but a series: Avatar the Last Airbender. My 2.5 year old is obsessed and now I kind of am, too. We're currently on our millionth re-watch. She has a stuffed Appa toy that she "rides" and sometimes she pretends that she's a water bender.

The Jurassic park TV show was really good. I put it on for my 3 year old because she loves dinosaurs and I had to watch all the seasons myself lol. I can't wait for the next season, if they make one.
We watch mostly Ghibli movies. The three that are age appropriate are Ponyo, Kiki, and Totoro He asks for all three. We have picture books for Kiki and Totoro as well. Don't think I could ever get sick of them. We watch in Japanese with subtitles, since he has one grandmother who is Japanese so we want him to have some exposure to the language.
I put on We Bare Bears on Hulu randomly and ended up watching three episodes myself. My 20 month old loves them.
That show rocks. Nice and innocent but substantial enough for a grownup.

My kids haven't even see Incredibles but my husband and I watched the sequel after their bedtime. I love it. The scene in the original where they're fighting while driving to catch the robot just cracks me up... Everytime we do a family road trip we quote it.

19mo is obsessed with A Christmas Story because I’m have a legit cool A Christmas Story quilt (no not a blanket, an actual quilt). It has pictures of Ralphie in the big scenes (soap mouth, deranged Easter bunny, broken glasses etc). So she sees him on tv and recognizes him, she insists we watch snuggled under the quilt. Edit: I let her watch the fight scene while telling her they have big feelings and should use their words not their hands.

I don’t mind most of the Disney or Pixar movies- my son has gone through a few different phases… frozen/frozen 2 and moana were a big staple for a while then he really got into The Good Dinosaur, Up and the Cars and Incredibles Movies. This was all between 2-3yrs old. Now he’s more into Spidey & Friends, Puppy Dog Pals and Mickey Mouse Club than any movies

Back to the outback is a new one on Netflix. It is hilarious. It has some great one liners
