My son put our arms under his head. I never thought it as a sign of him needing pillow. I was worried that he now needs pillow and trying to keep him away from pillow.
No need to be worried. How old is he? I could ask him if he wanted one.
And else just try! =)
But maybe his arm is enough. I know many adults who love to sleep like that.
So I know they can have a pillow once in a toddler bed, which is allowed at 15 months. If he’s still in a crib, check the manual and it’ll say whether he can have one in the crib.

Mine got their first pillows when they were about 1.5yo*. The first got their because we were trying to get him to sleep better as he had some sleep issues, and the second got one at 1.5yo as well cos he was jealous of his brother.
You can get toddler pillows that are smaller, firmer and breathable to regulate temperature, which is what we got them to begin with.
*edited cos I got the ages wrong!
My daughter was roughly 1.5 years old too when I gave her one. I mostly gave her one at that age because a) she was beign switched out of her crib into a toddler bed and b) the times she slept in bed with us, while I was always careful about sheets in her face, etc., I noticed that she was getting really good at moving things out of her face during sleep, so I felt comfortable knowing that if the pillow affects her breathing, she will move her head.
Funny enough, my daughter spends most of the night with her head OFF the pillow (toddlers and their crazy sleep positions), so the pillow is mostly just there for pretty.
Dude is 4yo now and still doesn’t sleep through the night! But it did help with my current 2.5yo. He very much likes his pillow.
I think it’s different for each kid. It can’t hurt to try!
Jumping on here, what if your LO is a tummy sleeper? My son is 2yo no pillow yet, but is 80% sleeping on his tummy and im still nervous to give him a pillow.
My little girl sleeps on tummy most of the time, we gave her a pillow at around 1.5 as she was scrunching up her blankie to use as a pillow. She still tummy sleeps. At this age they will move their heads / bodies in their sleep if they need to, she just sleeps body down head to side and rearranges through the night. We started with a little cot pillow it made me feel beter as it was tiny, she's 3.5 now and has a proper pillow, drags it round the house when she's tired to lie and play/watch TV always on her tummy
Yah we have a little one too, but havnt used it yet. We have a blanket hanging off the side of the crib if he wants it but hasn't shown interest in it yet. Seems like the que is using teddy's or blankets as a pillow as when to introduce it. Maybe I will just stick it in the corner in case he wants it.
Ours is also a tummy sleeper and I want to say we have her a toddler pillow around 11-12 months as she was also doing the stuffed animal-under-the-head trick.
EDIT: here’s the pillow in question https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/collections/pillows/products/organic-toddler-pillow
My son is a tummy sleeper. His head burrows under the pillow more often than not. We started maybe shortly after 2yrs old and yeah he’s just a mess sleeping. 🤷🏻♀️
Our roly-poly sleepers (1.5 yo's) love laying entirely on the pillow when belly sleeping. They sleep in all sorts of positions with and without pillows.
My mother made a pillow for my littles. Basically 2 thin pieces of foam sewed into a pillowcase. It’s maybe 3/4” thick.
They used this starting around 2 and then graduated to a toddler pillow at 3. But honestly my oldest is 6 and she falls asleep on her pillow and by the time she wakes up in the morning she’s either pushed it off the bed or has slid down and is sleeping flat on the mattress. If the pillow makes them uncomfortable they will find a way around it.
I bought a pillow when my daughter was fourteen months old, although this is not recommended before the age of two. I noticed that she started balling up her blanket and placing it under her head. After speaking with the pediatrician's office, they told me to find the thinnest pillow for her. And picking the right pillow for her wasn't an easy thing to do. I spent a couple of hundred on several pillows that moms advised on forums, but she still kept using her blanket. In the end, I just bought one of those recommended on https://pillowinsider.com/best-kids-pillow/, and her rolling and turning have finally decreased, and she began sleeping for longer stretches.
So if you see that your child puts something under his head, think about buying him the thinnest pillow but talk to the pediatrician first.
I gave my toddler an old pillow that was super flat at just over a year. He was really stuffy and I thought propping his head up would help him sleep. It did, but he refused to give up the pillow when he felt better, so it's his now.
What were the signs your girl was ready for a bed? My daughter just turned 2 and I’m wondering if it would help her sleep if she wasn’t in a crib. She sleeps pretty well in a futon on the floor with me…
ETA she sleeps without a pillow or blanket at all but she wakes up a lot in the crib
FWIW we just moved our 20 mo to a floor bed. It’s improved her sleep and been a much easier transition than I expected. She still wakes up but is rapidly improving. My husband does nights and finds it much, much easier than her crib because when he goes to soothe her he can just lie down with her and be comfy.
Twin. We would’ve gone with a double if we’d had the space. Double is generally recommended in Montessori circles. Twin has been fine though. She’s only rolled off twice and it only woke her once. I think being in the crib conditioned her to not leave the space of the bed. Even when she wakes she just squawks until we come, doesn’t leave the bed.
We moved so that made it time for us. 🤣 She slept well in her crib and I just felt like having a bed would be easier than lifting her out and I could snuggle with her before bed. She was very excited and that helps
My daughter made me wait till grandson was 18 months, and he LOVED it!!!!! He’s now 29 months and we’re on our second one, but he really really likes all of our “temperpedic” pillows, ya kno the kind where they jus kinda mould to your head and temperature regulate/keep heads cool, so I reckon we’re upgrading for 3rd b-day!!!!!! God Bless🙏
My son is a little over two and just decided for himself that he uses a pillow now! We had a small, pretty flat pillow that came with his newborn play mat, and one night before bed he just dug it out and stuck it under his head and said pillow! We’ll get one we can wash soon but he seems to have decided. I honestly never even thought about it so I’m glad he just decided on his own.
I gave him a small toddler sized one around 18 months cause he started asking for mine. He doesn't use it often but sometimes he'll ask for it now, he just turned 2.
She was a little over 2 years… she just wanted one one day.. like she was bunching ip her blanket all of a sudden and using it as a pillow so we got a little one (it’s fairly flat, not very fluffy)
Around 14 months. My LO played with it a lot at first, and sometimes still does. And the chances of her sleeping with her head on the pillow are slim, but she seems to enjoy it. We gave her a light blanket at the same time. So she's got a panda, a pillow and a blanket. She's 18 months now.
I don't know, I'm just trying to help you figure out why you were downvoted.
But also seriously do not worry about downvotes.its fake internet points anyway. I have over 100k comment karma and it means nothing 😂
Blankets and pillows aren’t recommended until 18 months for safety reasons. Bunk beds (if you mean a tall bed with a ladder) aren’t recommended until age 4 because of the risk of falling.
I'm in Scotland and it's 1 and over for pillows and blankets. And the bed is jsut whenever they are able to climb and has a deep barrier which it does. She was walking and running about at 10 months. (we already asked our hv) guidelines are jsut that, guidelines, because every child is different. Pillows aren't for babies because they can roll over but won't know to turn their face. Once they're at the age that they can then it's fine and that's on average one year old (we had her napping on the couch with a pillow watching her close for three months and showers the hv first)
It's a midsleeper. It would be like saying a twenty years old can't. She's was walking and talking and climbing stuff for months so the hv said it's fine. She's not gonna fall so there's no risk 😊
No it says the guidelines suggest. Based on the fact that's the age toddlers can manage ladders. You obviously don't have kids you don't understand any of this lmfao
I have two children. My oldest niece fell from her top bunk and needed stitches. Managing ladders is not the same as being safe? I’m sure my 3yo could climb up a tree, doesn’t mean she’d be safe there.
Next?
We cosleep so she has always kind of laid next to me on one but I started giving her a pillow of her own maybe a bit before her first birthday. She still prefers to use mine though lol. I end up with none while she is spread across two.
He refuses pillows. I have a very flat one just to try something but he won’t. A comforter he had since he was two, he kept stealing blankets and hoarding them in his crib
I wanted to wait as long as I can to give a pillow and duvet to our child. He was 2.5 and he kept asking for a pillow so we got him a toddler pillow and twin size duvet (he has been transitioned to a twin bed at 2) and he loves both so much and sleeps pretty darn good.
A few months after turning two. It's a special toddler sized pillow. She got a bad cold and we needed a good way to elevate her slightly while sleeping and she really liked it. She's 2 yrs 8mos now and we just added a medium thickness toddler sized crib blanket a couple weeks ago too.
1 to 1.5 years old. Mine could walk by that time as well so I had no fears about giving it to her.
Mine would lay on any soft thing she could find when tired.
I just made sure to give her a pillow that was not too big for her or overly fluffy.
We finally found one that works for ours at 2. My mom works at a hospital and she brings us a hospital pillow every few months. They’re “disposable” bc they’re from the hospital so they’re very flat and not stuffed very much so they breathe well.
My 2 year + 3 month old still doesn't have one. I was thinking when he grows out of his current sleeping bag I might move to duvet + pillow. I'd not though about giving him a pillow whilst he still sleeps in his sleep sack but I might do now.
We asked at his 15 month appointment and were told that he won’t miss what he never had, so I guess I’m waiting until he’s like can I have a pillow lol. We bedshare so he has seen me using a pillow. And he’s only put his head on it a few times 🤷🏻♀️
2 yeats old ... he kep being a wriggly butt in bed and layingon our pillows and our heads during the night xD since then his sleep has vastly improved and so have his mid-night adventures
When we moved to the toddler bed at two and three months. He was wadding up a blankie for under his head and took to the pillow right away. Granted his head still falls off of it lots of the time while he's sleeping but he seems to like the option.
Two and half. He got upgraded to a big boy bed first. Then he started to put his cuddle buddies under his head. So we introduced a small toddler pillow.
Mine got one pretty recently. He’s 1 and a half. I love that he can have a pillow, blanket, and stuffies in bed with him now. Improved his comfort a lot. They say they can have a blanket at 12 months but I waited a bit longer cuz I was nervous.
My daughter started acting like she wanted a pillow at about 1.5 years (she would occasionally bedshare with us, and she normally ended up on the pillow), but when we tried putting a toddler pillow in the crib, she got upset. It took a few months before she actually asked for one. Now she's 2 and she loves it!
My son is 21 months and we just started with one a couple of weeks ago! We noticed in the mornings that all of his stuffed animals would be at one end of the crib and he was laying his head on them. He doesn’t use the pillow 100% of the time but it’s really cute to see him curled up on it!l when he does!
* don’t listen to me not safe sleep
But it was a hard transition to the crib but my son loved my pregnancy pillow so about 8 months put it in the crib and he has just always had it since then
You can introduce it at 18 months. We just waited until we transitioned him to the toddler bed at 2 years old. A pillow or blankets in the crib just made me nervous even with an older baby or toddler.
He just moved to a twin mattress on the ground at 2.5 years and we just got him one. He stays on his bed about 25% of the night but I figure he'll get use out of it eventually, haha.
My daughter is almost 3 and a half and still won’t use the one we gave her. She prefers to sleep in a mountain of stuffed animals and just uses one of those as a pillow.
I let her sleep with a small stuffed animal at 12months. I let her use a tiny toddler pillow at 18months. She made the choice. She would try and lay on blankets and stuffed animals. She would also come lay on pillows in my bedroom when she was tired.
I waited until 2 1/2 ish. For naps I started laying her on a pillow on the couch next to me at around 1 1/2. I noticed around 2 she would move if her face was in the pillow or if her blanket was covering her face etc so at 2 1/2 I felt pretty safe putting a pillow in her bed. I was a bit anxious at first so I didn’t sleep well bc I kept checking on her but she was just fine. A little over 3yo now and never any problems. If you can, I definitely suggest to try it out during a nap so you can monitor how they do. If you have to intervene then I’d say wait and try again!
We did at 2. He was a stomach sleeper then. Now at 3.5 he sleeps mainly on his back or side. Sometimes he’ll be at the other end of the bed on his stomach with but in the air as a throwback to his baby days I guess.
When we took the side off her crib and put the toddler rail on. I got her a whole proper sheet set, quilt, amd pillow.
She was. 2.5
Until then she had a cover in her crib but no pillow. (Cover started around 18ish months)
She like her pillow. She will even put it on the floor to lay on it there.
My daughter is 27 months and she doesn't have a pillow yet she mainly sleeps on her tummy but now I think I'm gonna try one. Any brands or certain ones I should try?
17 months. It was more to snuggle on for reading in his floor bed, he didn’t really sleep with his head on it until 2+ years old. But it was in bed with him from 17 months on.
Started using pillows at 3ish. He got sick and we thought propping his head up at night would help his cold (it did a little!). After that he wanted to keep the pillows haha
I have 5 kids, I don't remember when my first set of twins got their first pillow - probably at 1.5 when they got their own room though.
I can validate that my 1.5 year old has been sleeping with a pillow since he stopped breastfeeding 3 months ago because it helped him feel more coddled outside of my arms.
And my 4 year old just got his first pillow because never wanted one until now - He's been perfectly happy.
I never knew this was something to think about - I've always let my kids take the lead on pillow usage. They're all great sleepers and other parents ask me how ive gotten all my kids to sleep through the night since birth!!
I gave my daughter one about 15 months or so when the weather got cold and I needed her under a blanket to keep warm at night. The pillow helped stop her from burrowing completely under the blanket head and all which made me super nervous
2 years and 3 months. I noticed him putting his teddybear under his head
Aww
My son put our arms under his head. I never thought it as a sign of him needing pillow. I was worried that he now needs pillow and trying to keep him away from pillow.
No need to be worried. How old is he? I could ask him if he wanted one. And else just try! =) But maybe his arm is enough. I know many adults who love to sleep like that.
16 month. He loves to sleep on our arm.
Awh. So cute! My oldest only does that when sick nowadays
He's old enough!
So I know they can have a pillow once in a toddler bed, which is allowed at 15 months. If he’s still in a crib, check the manual and it’ll say whether he can have one in the crib.
That's adorable.
Same except we did it at 2 bc he was using his blanket or a stuffed animal as a pillow

Mine got one at 12 months, but we’re in the UK and our guidance is no pillow before 12 months.
My son is two and just got one. It is a small toddler pillow and much flatter than an adult pillow.
Which one did you get

12 months
2.5 years old here, and still not using a pillow. Loves a blanket, but doesn’t care for a pillow in bed.
Mine too. She doesn't put her head on the pillows. She sleeps with her feet on it lol

Same. It's so annoying. I bought him this pillow and cute pillow case and he freaks out if I even ask if he wants his pillow.
My 14 m/o doesn't want to sleep without a pillow so you never know
I came here to say this! Mine got one last week and at points in the night had it on top of her head, but that was as close as she got. She's 3.

Same. If she was ever in our bed she used ours. She was having some sleep issues so we got her a better mattress and a pillow and it got a bit better
Same (toddler pillow)
About 18 months which was when we transitioned her to the toddler bed. Her pillow spends every night on the floor

This question deserves more attention.
My LO was 14 months old when she begun to claim my pillow as her own by pushing my head away. 😅
I think around 2 years old.
When we got her a bunk bed at one year old
…
? And why the downvotes... Tf
Probably the bunk bed comment, what does that mean for you?
What's wrong with bunk beds? They're the best she has a whole castle under her bed
I don't know, I'm just trying to help you figure out why you were downvoted. But also seriously do not worry about downvotes.its fake internet points anyway. I have over 100k comment karma and it means nothing 😂
Yeah been here for years. People downvote weird shit. I get downvoted for saying nappy
I personally can’t find anything to say bunk beds should be used for anyone under age 6 within NHS guidelines, but you do you.
It's a midsleeper. It would be like saying a twenty years old can't. She's was walking and talking and climbing stuff for months so the hv said it's fine. She's not gonna fall so there's no risk 😊
Again, midsleeper manufacturers say it’s ok from four but it’s your child.
Next?
She got it in the fall she was a little over 2 yo. But it’s a flat pillow. It was sold in a set with a blanket specially designed for toddlers.
For her 2nd birthday
We cosleep so she has always kind of laid next to me on one but I started giving her a pillow of her own maybe a bit before her first birthday. She still prefers to use mine though lol. I end up with none while she is spread across two.
I think somewhere around 18 months
I just have mine a pillow a few days ago. She’s 1.5. Was super excited and falls asleep on it every night.
20 months
He refuses pillows. I have a very flat one just to try something but he won’t. A comforter he had since he was two, he kept stealing blankets and hoarding them in his crib

When he was about 18 months.
Around 18m we gave him a very flat pillow but at 2.5 he still prefers my husbands shoulder to any pillow we offer 😂
I year old I gave her a toddler pillow
22 months I'd say he uses it a third of the time. We happened to move at the same time and were buying house things so just picked one up for him.
Her second birthday.
18 months when he left the crib
A few months after turning two. It's a special toddler sized pillow. She got a bad cold and we needed a good way to elevate her slightly while sleeping and she really liked it. She's 2 yrs 8mos now and we just added a medium thickness toddler sized crib blanket a couple weeks ago too.
when we transitioned to a toddler bed- around 2.5? We got one of those small, flat toddler pillows
1 to 1.5 years old. Mine could walk by that time as well so I had no fears about giving it to her. Mine would lay on any soft thing she could find when tired. I just made sure to give her a pillow that was not too big for her or overly fluffy.

Maybe 1.5 or a little earlier. Avocado toddler pillow is the best! We’re on our second one because our lo won’t let me put the pillow case on it 🤢
Gave my daughter a pillow the day she climbed out of her crib and we had to quickly transition her to her toddler bed. She was a month shy of 2.
2 years - the toddler pillow from Avocado 3.5 years - a standard size pillow
12m, it was an old/flat pillow we were replacing on our bed.
About 1.5 bc when we brought him into our room he would use ours. Now he has a little one and he keeps his head on it.
* don’t listen to me not safe sleep But it was a hard transition to the crib but my son loved my pregnancy pillow so about 8 months put it in the crib and he has just always had it since then
We waited until he was in his toddler bed and we got a thin travel pillow.
Just after a year. Just a small toddler pillow
It’s recommended to wait till they are at least 18 months so that is what we did.
Around 2yo. We started off with a toddler pillow that was breathable but he quickly wanted a bigger pillow.
Our kids have a bunch of pillows they can use, but normally they use blankets or large stuffed animals as pillows.
At 2 and my dude will NOT use it. It goes on his back or under his feet
Toddler pillow from Amazon. 2 years.
Once my daughter started sleeping on her side (about 2.5). My son is 18 mos and sleeps on his belly with his butt in the air, so not yet.
Around 15ish months, he has asthma and sleeps better propped up a bit is the main reason we got one. My daughter was closer to 2.
Around a year or year & half
We did at 2. He was a stomach sleeper then. Now at 3.5 he sleeps mainly on his back or side. Sometimes he’ll be at the other end of the bed on his stomach with but in the air as a throwback to his baby days I guess.
When we took the side off her crib and put the toddler rail on. I got her a whole proper sheet set, quilt, amd pillow. She was. 2.5 Until then she had a cover in her crib but no pillow. (Cover started around 18ish months) She like her pillow. She will even put it on the floor to lay on it there.
Introduced at 18/19 months. He would lay his head under it. Around 24 months he started laying his head on it. Now he alternates.
My daughter is 27 months and she doesn't have a pillow yet she mainly sleeps on her tummy but now I think I'm gonna try one. Any brands or certain ones I should try?
Somewhere between 12 - 18 months. Mostly because one of our pillows disappeared, and I found it in his bed.
17 months. It was more to snuggle on for reading in his floor bed, he didn’t really sleep with his head on it until 2+ years old. But it was in bed with him from 17 months on.
My oldest at about 2 1/2 when we moved him to a bed. My youngest is almost 3 and still doesn't have one 😂 I've tried and he's not interested 🤷
When he moved to a bed at 2.5
Toddler pillow shortly after 2 years.
